Apple’s latest smartwatch has landed in hot water in Germany, where a court has ruled against the company’s claims that the Apple Watch Series 10 is “climate neutral.” The decision casts doubt on Apple’s green branding and raises questions about the wider use of carbon offsets in the tech industry.

A Frankfurt court barred Apple from advertising the Watch Series 10 as carbon-neutral in Germany starting next month, according to Reuters. Apple promotes the $399 watch as its most sustainable yet, highlighting the use of 100% renewable energy in production, recycled or sustainably sourced packaging, and lower emissions thanks to ground and sea shipping. By Apple’s calculation, the device generates 8.3kg of CO₂ during its lifecycle, which the company claims to offset through carbon certificates linked to eucalyptus plantations in Paraguay.

But environmental groups challenged the approach, saying these plantations are monocultures with high water demands and only leased until 2029—raising doubts about their long-term ability to trap carbon. The court sided with that view, calling the practice misleading and essentially “greenwashing.” Apple responded by saying the decision “largely confirmed” its approach to carbon neutrality, though it hasn’t said whether it plans to appeal.

For Apple, the ruling could be a setback to its broader pledge to reach full carbon neutrality by 2030. The case highlights growing skepticism around offset-based sustainability claims, which many argue don’t deliver lasting environmental benefits. In Germany, Apple will now need to adjust its marketing to emphasize tangible efforts—such as renewable energy use and recycled materials—rather than leaning heavily on offsets.

The Apple Watch Series 10 itself still packs plenty of appeal, with a titanium case, 1,220 mm² display area, and impressively accurate health tracking. But in one of Apple’s biggest European markets, it’s not just the hardware under the spotlight—it’s the company’s environmental promises.

Apple has introduced the Apple Watch Series 10, featuring a redesigned look, a larger display, and several new health and fitness features.

Thinnest Apple Watch Yet

The Series 10 is nearly 10% thinner than previous models while maintaining its 18-hour battery life. This is made possible by a new design that integrates the antenna into the watch casing. It comes in aluminum and titanium cases, with several colors and finishes, including jet-black aluminum and polished titanium.

Larger Display and Improved Refresh Rate

The Series 10 has the largest display on any Apple Watch, with up to 30% more screen area. The wide-angle OLED technology makes it 40% brighter when viewed from an angle, and the faster refresh rate allows for a continuously moving second hand on some watch faces.

Faster Charging

All iPhone 16s will have Action Button support this year. It’s a customizable shortcut button on the side of the phone which Apple introduced last year with iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Moreover, a camera-focused Capture Button is also expected to be included in the iPhone 16 series.

New Apple Watch Series 10

Apple is also expected to launch its new smartwatch, the Apple Watch Series 10., at this event. It’s usual for a new Series smartwatch to tag along with new iPhones.

As expected, AirPods will also be one of the stars of Apple’s event on September 9. Apple is expected to announce new mid-range and entry-level AirPods 4 options (not pro) to continue competing in the true wireless headphone market. 

One of them would come with similar features to the current third-generation AirPods, while the other variant would have active noise cancellation, but with slightly lower features than the AirPods Pro to put them on sale at a lower price.

Finally, it wouldn’t be strange to see a refresh of the AirPods Max, which could come with updated features compared to the current models. This includes a USB-C port instead of the Lightning connector, Bluetooth 5.3, an H2 chip for more features, and new colors.

Apple Intelligence

Apple’s focus on AI could extend from WWDC through its September event with dedicated Apple Intelligence features for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models.

It was previously reported that Apple Intelligence will play a key role in the announcement of the new devices, and we’re waiting to see what different features the company has planned for the new devices, which didn’t see the light of day in June at the company’s WWDC event.

iOS 18 and other software updates

Shortly after the event, Apple will release iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11, tvOS 18, and visionOS 2 build candidates to developers as part of its final wave of beta testing. Updates will be released shortly afterward, when devices hit shelves ahead of September 20.

The new software updates will feature all the features the company announced earlier this year, including several AI features that Apple announced at its WWDC event.

Apple’s annual Fall event is a few months away. As usual, it will see the launch of the next-generation iPhones and Apple Watch. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Apple Watch with a special offering reportedly labelled Watch X on the cards. Past reports suggest that the Cupertino-based tech giant may introduce a major overhaul to the Watch Series 10 including a thinner design and larger display. Now, raw CAD-based renders give us a first glimpse at this year’s Watch Series 10. It’s worth noting that there is still no clarity between Watch Series 10 and Watch X. 

Apple Watch Series 10 leaked CAD-based renders 

As per the leaked renders, the Apple Watch Series 10 will feature a familiar design as its predecessors. It will have a square dial with a rotating crown on the top right side and a physical button below it. 

Coming to the changes, the Apple Watch Series 10 is seen with a bigger display. It will reportedly feature a 2-inch screen which is quite an upgrade from the 1.7-inch on the Watch Series 9. Additionally, the Watch Ultra 2 has a 1.93-inch display. This will make the upcoming offering the biggest screen Apple Watch so far. The increase in screen size will result in to increased dimensions of the smartwatch. Dimensions-wise, it will measure 46 x 39.7 x 11.6mm making it bigger than the Watch Series 9 but smaller than the Watch Ultra. In other words, it will sit between the two models. 

As for the confusion between the Apple Watch Series 10 and Watch X, the CAD-based renders don’t seem to reveal any significant overhaul on the former. Hence, it could be a minor refresh with the Watch X coming out as an anniversary model. Previously, it was reported that the Watch X could feature a magnetic band attachment system which is not seen in the renders.
