Amidst all the rumors swirling about the upcoming iPad lineup and how it might be OLED equipped, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has thrown a curveball on the Apple Watch Ultra 3. After suggesting a possible delay, Kuo now expects a new Ultra model in 2024. However, there’s a catch: it likely won’t boast significant hardware advancements compared to the Ultra 2. Specific details about the Apple Watch Ultra 3 remain under wraps, with a September launch timeframe the only confirmed information so far.

Looking beyond the Ultra line, the possibility of a third-generation Apple Watch SE launching this year exists if Apple sticks to its two-year update cycle. The fate of the Apple Watch Series 9 successor remains unclear. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously hinted at a redesigned “Apple Watch X” with blood pressure and sleep apnea features, but its launch window and official name are uncertain.

Interestingly, Gurman’s suggested features for the Series 9 successor could potentially make their way to the Apple Watch Ultra 3 as well. With the original Apple Watch nearing its tenth anniversary (unveiled in September 2014, launched in April 2015), all eyes are on Apple’s upcoming smartwatch announcements.

Apple‘s plans to transition to Micro LED technology for its Apple Watch series may face delays until after 2027 due to challenges in finalizing the supply chain for the necessary components. This upgrade aims to replace OLED displays in Apple Watch models, offering improved lifespan, brightness, and efficiency.

MicroLED Apple Watch Now Projected to Launch in 2027

Last year, initial reports suggested Apple might introduce Micro LED technology in its Apple Watches by the end of 2024. However, projections have been postponed, and now the expected timeline for this transition is not before the first quarter of 2026, as per market research firm TrendForce.

The primary challenge in Apple’s move to Micro LED technology is the high production costs and lower yield rates. The manufacturing cost for a Micro LED display for the Apple Watch could be as high as $150, in contrast to the current $38 cost for OLED displays. This significant cost difference raises concerns about the retail pricing of future Micro LED Apple Watches, potentially positioning them at a much higher price point compared to current models and even OLED iPhones.

Despite these challenges, Apple’s interest in Micro LED technology is driven by its advantages over OLED, including the potential for enhanced display quality on smaller screens. With a feasible pixel density range of 300-400 PPI, Micro LED offers a suitable upgrade path for the wearable device.

Apple is reported to be collaborating with various suppliers to overcome these obstacles, including Epistar and Osram for wafer and chip production, LuxVue for backplane technology, and LG Display and ITRI for additional componentry. However, without a finalized supply chain, the path to mass production remains uncertain.

As the industry watches Apple’s efforts to innovate within its wearable lineup, the potential shift to Micro LED technology represents a significant investment in the future of smartwatch displays. However, with production costs and supply chain complexities posing significant challenges, consumers may have to wait longer than anticipated for the next big leap in Apple Watch technology.

At the end of December, Pebble Cosmos Engage debuted in India as one of the first Apple Watch Ultra clones in the country. Almost three months later, the product is no longer sold in the region.

For the unaware, it was introduced at ₹3,999 (~$50). To fill the void left by this wearable, Gizmore has launched its version of the Apple Watch Ultra clone in India.

Gizmore Vogue: An Apple Watch Ultra clone priced at $30

Officially called the Gizmore Vogue, the smartwatch is way more affordable than the Pebble Cosmos Engage. It carries a retail price of ₹2,499 (~$30) but can be bought at only ₹1,999 (~$25) for a limited time through Flipkart.

Apart from the looks, this wearable has nothing to do with the Apple Watch Ultra. It offers the same set of specs that you can usually find on smartwatches retailing at around this price.

The product sports a 1.95-inch square display with a resolution of 385 x 320 pixels and 600 nits peak brightness. It supports over 100 watch faces.

It comes with multiple health functions, such as heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen level monitoring, and sleep tracking. There’s also support for menstrual cycle tracking and sedentary/dehydration reminders.

On the connectivity front, it arrives with Bluetooth 5.1 to connect with smartphones and GPS for activity tracking. It supports Bluetooth calling through the onboard speaker and microphone.

The wearable is IP67-rated for dust and water resistance. It can last up to 10 days on a full charge. Last but not least, it can be availed in either black, orange, or white color options.

The watch has a host of features that sets it apart from its competition, such as 100m water resistance and up to 60 hours of battery life. The watch also boasts an OLED display. Speaking of displays, Apple screens have always been a topic of discussion among fans and critics alike. While the iPhone finally got an OLED display in 2017, many iPad models still sport LED screens. As per the latest reports, the tech giant will delay the adoption of microLED technology for the Apple Watch Ultra.

As reported by MacRumors, based on a tweet by display industry expert Ross Young, the transition to microLED will now be postponed until 2025. This news contradicts earlier reports that the microLED Apple Watch Ultra would hit the market in 2024. It must be noted that developing a microLED display technology is a bit more complex since these displays are not as common or mass-producible as OLED and LCDs.

The switch to microLED technology brings several benefits to the table, including improved power efficiency and durability, which are crucial selling points for the premium Apple Watch Ultra. There were also rumors of a slightly larger microLED panel, which could attract more athletes and outdoor enthusiasts, the target audience for the wearable.

However, the Apple Watch Ultra seems to have been put on hold due to Apple’s focus on its upcoming VR/AR headset, the Reality Pro. Apple is pitching a lot of hope on its headset, and its other devices might face some whiplash from that. Recently, the company collaborated with Disney to develop Virtual content. Pebble was one of the most desired wearable brands by enthusiasts. The brand ceased operations after being acquired by Fitbit.

Though Google-owned Fitbit controls the Pebble brand name, an Indian company has been selling cheap smartwatches under this brand name for a while.

This Indian Pebble brand has recently released an Apple Watch Ultra clone priced at only ₹3,999 (~$50). Let’s take a look at it.

Pebble Cosmos Engage is the latest product from India-based SRK Powertech Private Limited. This company sells a wide variety of accessories under the Pebble brand name.

Recently, the firm rose to popularity with its smartwatches. Earlier this month, the company released a clone of the Apple Watch Series 8 dubbed Pebble Frost. Now, it has launched an Apple Watch Ultra knock-off called Pebble Cosmos Engage.

The Pebble Cosmos Engage looks like the Apple Watch Ultra in terms of design, and that’s where the similarity ends. Other than the looks, the product is just another cheap fitness tracker disguised as a smartwatch.

It comes with a 1.95-inch IPS LCD screen sporting a resolution of 385 x 320 pixels and up to 600 nits peak brightness. Though the panel is not OLED, it carries support for Always on Display (AOD).

The IP67-rated wearable offers multiple sports modes and features, such as heart rate monitoring, sleep monitoring, Bluetooth calling, and more. It can be availed in three colors, such as Salamander Orange, Starlight, Midnight Black, or Celestial Blue.

Last but not least, the product can be paired with both Android and iOS devices and it can only last for up to 4-5 days on a full charge.

This App Turns an Apple Watch Ultra Into A Diving Computer

Apple, Oceanic+ enables recreational scuba divers to take the watch they wear every day to previously unreachable depths up to 40 meters, or 130 feet, to be exact, with the all-new depth gauge and water temperature sensors on the watch.

The Oceanic+ app on Apple Watch Ultra and the companion app for iPhone provide all of the key features of an advanced dive computer, robust dive planning, and a comprehensive post-dive experience. The app will show divers a warning if they are descending or ascending too quickly and it will show an estimated time it’d take to get back to the surface. Here’s How The Apple Watch Ultra Sapphire Crystal Performs When Compared With Others

Sapphire can scratch at levels 8 or 9, depending on how pure it is, while glass generally scratches at level 6. There are a few factors to bear in mind, but JerryRigEverything’s testing demonstrates that the Apple Watch Ultra’s display is in fact protected by genuine sapphire. The Apple Watch Ultra’s sapphire crystal experienced mild abrasions at levels 6 and 7 of the testing, but major damage only begins at level 8. Which is indeed quite good!

Although the abrasions at levels 6 and 7 were less obvious than on the Apple Watch Ultra, the results were comparable with the Galaxy Watch 5. This is most likely caused by impurities in the substance or polishing difficulties, the YouTuber explains. The Garmin Fenix 7 exhibited the least amount of abrasions at levels 6 and 7, which indicates that it has the clearest sapphire crystal of the three watches.

This test demonstrates that, as compared to the other two smartwatches, Garmin has the purest Sapphire. But this doesn’t mean that Apple and Samsung are lying; in reality, they both use pure Sapphire, although possibly not to the same extent as Garmin. In either case, the variations are hardly noticeable and are very comparable.

Wearing this Apple Watch Ultra, I completed a five-day trekking trip in Tibet.

The first thing I felt when I got the Apple Watch Ultra, it was indeed big, but much lighter than I thought it would be. The larger size objectively makes up for Apple Watch’s shortcomings in battery life and improves control in outdoor scenarios.

The most obvious change is the display, which makes it easier to see the customizable complications on the dial. And with a 2000-nit screen, it’s easy to see dials and sports data outdoors with this brightness.

Previously, we wore Apple Watch with a minimalist style, and two buttons and a touch screen were sufficient for interaction. But in outdoor hiking and diving scenarios, it’s very different.

Apple Watch Ultra

In outdoor sports, there is more reliance on mechanical operation.

Because when wearing gloves or floating in the water, touch screen operations is prone to accidental touch. For this reason, mainstream outdoor watches are designed with 4-5 mechanical buttons on the side of the watch, and each of them protrudes for easy pressing.

The Apple Watch Ultra’s digital crown is rugged enough to be rubbed with gloves, and the Dock key has an increased surface area and protrudes outward for easier pressing. The custom buttons are the biggest change to get rid of the touch screen for extreme sports. Before I left each day, I pressed it to start recording, and to pause or continue, I double-pressed the custom button and the Dock key. Only when the hike is finished will I use the touch screen to end the exercise.

The 3 physical buttons are compact enough for the Apple Watch Ultra, but the customization of the keys is not extreme enough for what I experienced on foot. For example, when I press and hold the custom button, it does not open other functions, but instead appears as a shutdown screen like a long press on the Dock key. This will also lead to the compass, blood oxygen and other App in the middle of the hike, the physical button is not enough to support the application switch, still rely on the touch screen operation.

It is reasonable to say that the larger screen to see the data is also more clear. After the actual hiking experience, I think it’s more important to see than to hear. Especially during the summit stage above 4500m, my heart rate jumped from 120 to 153 every 10 steps, and although I still had the strength to lift my wrist, I didn’t feel like looking at the time, pace, and another information line by line.

On the hike, I asked a few fellow hikers wearing smartwatches what they would be concerned about on their watches. There were a few main things that people were most concerned about: route, elevation, heart rate, and the infrequently used but indispensable blood oxygen saturation.

Pre-installed routes are supported in some outdoor watches of Jamin and Sonto, and Apple Watch can import routes through third-party software two-step road, outdooractive, and Wikiloc. During the five days of the trek, I mainly used the Apple Watch Ultra to record the route and backtracked once in case I needed to do so.

Elevation and heart rate are recorded for viewing during and after the hike.

I will adjust my pace based on these two data during the hike. After the hike is over, the climb and heart rate will be used as a reference for the difficulty of today’s hike, which will be used to decide whether to continue tomorrow or to take it slow.

Regarding the accuracy of the elevation, the local guide said, “According to past experience, the elevation shown on the smartwatch is about 100m off from the actual one. After I measured the elevation at two places, the Apple Watch Ultra’s elevation error was within 10 meters, which is quite accurate.

What about battery life? Let’s start with the conclusion that the Apple Watch Ultra lasts for more than 30 hours, but that’s for everyday use. If you want to continuously record more than 5 hours of exercise, you still have to charge it once a day.

I wore it to work before this test. I put it on at 9:24am on the first day and used the watch to record my run for 1 hour until 18:04pm the next day when the watch reminded me that 10% of the battery was left.

For the outdoor scenario, I used two tests.

With the all weather display on, I recorded a 6 hour hike starting at 10:00 am, with route tracking from third party software turned on. When I arrived at camp at 16:05, I had 37% battery left.

The all-weather display was turned off, and the 9-hour hike was recorded continuously. During this time, I played music for 40min and took photos with the screen lit for about 30min. 10% of the battery remained after the hike.

So, who needs it?

During the hike, I also talked to my friends who were wearing smart devices about what kind of outdoor smart watch they wanted. In the answers they gave, they put smart all in the first place, followed by outdoor features.

Now we have no shortage of smartwatch options and enough features to meet our daily fitness routine, but to go further, we still need to look towards outdoor watches that are more adaptable to the limits. When the Apple Watch Ultra combines the two, it can deal with extreme environments and record movement while intelligently managing it.

It’s a simpler option for outdoor enthusiasts.

Apple Watch UItra durability test: Survives a hammer but the table didn’t

Apple has just recently launched its new top end Watch Ultra model that is also by far its most expensive smartwatch till date. Now, a YouTuber put it under a durability test and the results were surprising to say the least.

The Cupertino based giant’s Watch Ultra is the latest flagship smartwatch, and now, YouTuber TechRax put its durability to the test. Looking at this video, we can see the Watch Ultra smartwatch undergo a number of different endurance tests. This includes a drop from a height of four feet. The Watch Ultra did not have any cracks but did have a few minor dents on its casing. Following this, the Watch Ultra was even thrown in a jar of nails, but it still was able to survive without any scratches.

But these were just the start, the YouTuber also had one final durability test in mind. The device got hammered on its sapphire crystal display a number of times. Despite going through such physical trauma, the Watch Ultra was capable of enduring these hits before it finally got cracked. However, there was one interesting thing to note here. The table on which the Apple Watch was placed actually started showing signs of damage before the Watch Ultra.

Meaning, it started breaking before the smartwatch’s display got a crack. Although, the Watch Ultra didn’t fair much better either since the multiple hits had the device fail to turn on after the test. This implies that it suffered from some major damage on its internal hardware. But realistically speaking, a user’s Watch would never actually face such a tough situation.

Apple had just recently launched the new Watch Series 8 alongside two new Watch models, including the Watch Ultra and the new Watch SE as well. Now, a new certification has revealed the battery capacities of the company’s latest smartwatches.

The new smart wearables from the Cupertino based giant were spotted on the 3C certification website. Talking about the new Apple Watches, the Watch Ultra features a titanium casing that offers up to 60 hours of battery life. Meanwhile, the Watch Series 8 and Watch SE also arrives with a some upgrades over the previous generation. The new Watch Ultra is the top end model from the brand. Based on the 3C listing, the Watch Ultra is powered by a large 542mAh battery pack.

Furthermore, the Watch Series 8 arrives in two sizes, including 41mm and 45mm sizes. The smaller variant features a 282mAh battery pack, while the larger version packs a larger 308mAh battery pack. Lastly, the brand has also announced the Watch SE, which is the most affordable Watch model out of the three, in two sizes as well. The 40mm variant has a 245mAh battery pack, while the 44mm version has a 296mAh battery pack. Notably, the Watch Ultra comes in a single 49mm variant and can last for up to 36 hours. Although, the new low power mode lets its last for an extended 60 hours.

The information reportedly displayed on the official Apple website in China indicates that the damage repair price of the Watch Ultra could be as high as 3,459 (~$541). Apple however offers the AppleCare+ service plan with a discounted repair cost of 588 yuan (~$85). The AppleCare+ Service Plan entails a payment of 799 yuan (~$115) for two years. The Apple Watch Ultra comes with some impressive features and improvements in its design. It however remains to be seen how this high repair cost could impact its acceptance in the market. The included service plan provides some comfort for users.

Apple Watch Ultra repair cost in China

Apple promotes the Watch Ultra as a watch that pushes the boundaries for high-performance athletes. It is the most rugged and capable Apple Watch ever and comes with a robust titanium case, precision dual-frequency GPS, and up to 36 hours of battery life. Three specialized watch bands made for athletes and adventurers are also available for the device. It also offers the freedom of cellular with a pioneering engineering design. Apple says the Watch Ultra is crafted with painstaking attention to detail for unparalleled performance.

The new case is designed to protect the flat sapphire crystal from edge impacts and damage. The Apple Watch Ultra is water-resistant up to 100m and tested to MIL-STD 810H standard. With its rugged credentials, we expect the Apple Watch Ultra not to be underwhelming in its durability.

The watch is available for around $799 internationally.

Apple Watch Ultra with a bigger battery announced with the Watch Series 8 & Watch SE

Apple has announced several products including the Watch Series 8 and Watch SE. One of the products that had generated hype before now was the Apple Watch Ultra which was also announced during the Far Out Event. The Apple Watch Ultra traversed the rumor mills previously as the Apple Watch Pro and comes with a 49mm watch case as well as a bigger battery.

Apple Watch Ultra

The Apple Watch Ultra seems to be in a class of its own, design-wise when compared to previous models. It has the largest and brightest display of all Apple Watches. The display is capable of up to 2,000 nits of brightness, according to Apple. The huge case is made of titanium with a raised edge protection for the display.

Below the display is a sapphire crystal cover while there is an extra speaker at the side for high-pitched sound in an emergency. The extra speaker can deliver an 86-dB siren for emergencies. The home button and digital crown are located on the right side of the Watch Ultra. Three microphones help to deliver crisp audio even in windy conditions.

Apple Watch Series 8

The Apple Watch Ultra has a new customizable watch face called Wayfinder and it accommodates more information. There is a new Action button that can be customized for instant access to Compass Waypoints, Backtrack, or Workouts. The Backtrack feature helps the user to find his way back through a trail when needed. The Apple Watch Ultra has up to 30 hours of battery life on typical usage. When the ultra low mode becomes available, the battery can last for up to 60 hours.

Apple Watch Series 8

The Apple Watch Ultra is a rugged and premium smartwatch. It has the MIL-STD-810H certification and can operate in a wide temperature range. It can be used for water sports and its built-in depth gauge is handy in this regard. The model comes with cellular and GPS connectivity and is priced at $799. Three watch bands – Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, and Ocean Band are available for the Watch Ultra.

Apple Watch SE

Apple says the product will start shipping on September 23. The Apple Watch Series 8 with a new S8 chip and improvements from the Watch Series 7 and the Watch SE were also announced. The Watch Series 8 is priced at $499 while the Watch SE will retail for $299. Both devices will start shipping on September 16.
