<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple&#8217;s</a> much-anticipated mixed-reality headset may not be making an <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/02/16/apple-mixed-reality-headset-wwdc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">appearance</a> at this year&#8217;s Worldwide Developers Conference (<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/wwdc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WWDC</a>), as mass production has been delayed yet again, according to prominent Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In a tweet, Kuo explained that Apple is not optimistic about the headset&#8217;s potential to create an &#8220;iPhone moment,&#8221; which has led to a further delay in its mass production schedule until the end of Q3 2023. This has created uncertainty as to whether the device will appear at <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/wwdc-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WWDC 2023</a>, as was previously anticipated.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-1024x683.webp?x96852" alt="Apple's mixed-reality headset" class="wp-image-526822" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-1024x683.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-300x200.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-768x513.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-696x464.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-1068x713.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-629x420.webp 629w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa.webp 1479w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Credit: Antonio De Rosa</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Kuo believes that this delay has been caused by concerns over poor market feedback, given the economic downturn, hardware specification compromises, the weight of the device, and the readiness of the headset&#8217;s ecosystem and applications. These issues, combined with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/08/08/apple-mixed-reality-headset-launch-jan-2023-hefty-price/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">high selling price</a> of the headset, which Kuo predicts could be between $3,000 to $4,000, or even higher, have resulted in a reduction of shipment forecasts for 2023. Previously, half a million units were expected to ship this year, but this has now been reduced to just 200,000 to 300,000 units.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Because Apple isn&#39;t very optimistic about the AR/MR headset announcement recreating the astounding &quot;iPhone moment,&quot; the mass production schedule for assembly has been pushed back by another 1-2 months to mid-to-late 3Q23. The delay also adds uncertainty to whether the new device…</p>&mdash; 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) <a href="https://twitter.com/mingchikuo/status/1641406406107758598?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 30, 2023</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
</div></figure>

<p>These concerns echo a recent report from The New York Times, which stated that Apple employees had serious doubts about the headset&#8217;s prospects, describing it as &#8220;a solution in search of a problem.&#8221; Apple&#8217;s decision to delay the headset&#8217;s production may indicate that the company is taking these concerns seriously and is working to address them.</p>

<p>Despite the setbacks, Apple&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mixed-reality-headset/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mixed-reality headset</a> remains one of the most highly anticipated products in the tech industry. It is expected to offer a range of innovative features, including <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/03/18/apple-xr-mixed-reality-headset-display-suppliers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">high-resolution displays</a>, advanced sensors, and the ability to seamlessly integrate with other <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a> devices. If Apple can overcome the challenges associated with the headset&#8217;s development, it could pave the way for a new era of mixed-reality technology and further cement Apple&#8217;s position as a leader in the tech industry.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a> is set to launch its first-generation Mixed Reality Headsets <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/02/16/apple-mixed-reality-headset-wwdc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">later this year</a>, with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/sony/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sony</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lg/">LG</a> being the initial suppliers of the displays used in the XR <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/headset/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">headsets</a>. The displays used in these headsets are expected to be a technological breakthrough, with OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) displays providing an ultra-high resolution of 3000-4000ppi. These displays will be smaller than an inch in diagonal length and will use silicon wafer-based CMOS substrates, unlike normal OLED display panels that use glass substrates.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-1024x683.webp?x96852" alt="Apple XR Mixed Reality Headset" class="wp-image-523407" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-1024x683.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-300x200.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-768x513.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-696x464.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-1068x713.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa-629x420.webp 629w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-vr-headset-concept-feature-antonio-de-rosa.webp 1479w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Credit: Antonio De Rosa</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Compared to a normal <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OLED</a> display used in a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/smartphone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smartphone</a>, which has an average resolution of 55ppi, the display used in an AR or a VR device requires an average resolution of 3,500ppi for a more realistic AR experience. The OLEDoS displays are expected to provide a highly immersive experience for users, with an extremely high resolution that allows for detailed and realistic imagery.</p>

<p>Sony and LG are said to be ahead of Samsung in the development of these displays and will be the initial suppliers of the displays for Apple&#8217;s upcoming XR device. However, Samsung is also working on developing an RGB OLEDoS display and is expected to bring out a 3500ppi FMM (Fine Metal Mask) with the help of APS Holdings.</p>

<p>Apple had also asked both LG and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/">Samsung</a> in the past to develop such a high-resolution display, and with Samsung&#8217;s collaboration with APS Holdings, it is likely to meet Apple&#8217;s requests. APS Holdings has also developed an ultra-high resolution FMM sheet and mask of 4,000ppi, which is better than the 3,500ppi FMM made with Samsung&#8217;s collaboration.</p>

<p>The first generation of Apple&#8217;s XR headsets will feature two OLEDoS displays, and while Apple is initially relying on Sony and LG for their displays, it is likely to stop relying on Sony in the future since the brand already has its own range of gaming consoles and may become a competitor to Apple.</p>

<p>The use of OLEDoS displays in Apple&#8217;s upcoming Mixed Reality Headsets is expected to set a new standard in the XR devices market, providing users with a highly immersive and realistic experience. The collaboration between Apple, Sony, LG, Samsung, and APS Holdings is indicative of the cutting-edge technology that is driving the development of these devices, which are expected to revolutionize the way we interact with technology.</p>
