This report reveals that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MediaTek</a> has managed to retain its top spot with a sizeable 38 percent market share.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/global-smartphone-ap-market-share/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>CounterPoint Research</em></a> report, the Taiwanese chipmaking giant continued to lead the global AP market in this quarter, with its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek-dimensity-700/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Dimensity 700</a> series dominating the 5G market. On the other hand, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/helio-p35/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Helio P35</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/helio-g80/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Helio G80</a> were quite popular in the 4G LTE segment. This report also marks the sizeable growth of MediaTek in recent times as the company&#8217;s latest Dimensity chipsets have become increasingly more popular across both mid range and entry level smartphones.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-324383 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/MediaTek-Chipset-White.jpg?x44794" alt="MediaTek Chipset White" width="800" height="400" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/MediaTek-Chipset-White.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/MediaTek-Chipset-White-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/MediaTek-Chipset-White-768x384.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/MediaTek-Chipset-White-696x348.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></p>
<p>Meanwhile, its rival <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Qualcomm</a> arrived second with a market share of 32 percent. The company saw a notable market share due to its processor&#8217;s popularity in the high end 5G market. Furthermore, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple</a> managed to capture the third spot with 15 percent market share thanks to the strong demand for its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-12/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">iPhone 12</a> and continued sales momentum. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/unisoc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">UNISOC</a> took the fourth and fifth spot with a 7 percent and 5 percent respectively. The latter saw a strong first half performance as it gained design wins with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/honor/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Honor</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/realme/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Realme</a> in the 4G LTE smartphone market.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/unisoc-smartphone-application-processor-shipments-doubled-h1-2021/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Counterpoint Research</em></a> report, Chinese chip designed saw a significant year on year rise in shipments for smartphone APs in H1 2021. This has the company rank fourth in the market with a total share of 8.4 percent and ranked third in the open market. <p>Research Analyst Parv Sharma stated that &#8220;UNISOC’s smartphone <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/foundry-supply-constraints-competition/">AP chipset shipments</a> more than doubled in the first half of 2021 compared to the first half of 2020. This year, the company has succeeded in expanding its customer base, securing a series of design wins with major OEMs like HONOR, realme and Motorola. In its home market, the UNISOC T610 and T740 have been successfully adopted by ZTE, Hisense and HONOR. This improved acceptance of UNISOC-powered smartphones by Chinese consumers is a positive signal for its growth in the second half of 2021.&#8221;</p>

This also implies that it would be able to overtake <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/hisilicon/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei HiSilicon</a> as the third largest smartphone AP supplier.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-267670 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Unisoc.jpg?x44794" alt="Unisoc" width="1440" height="1080" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Unisoc.jpg 1440w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Unisoc-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Unisoc-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Unisoc-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Unisoc-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Unisoc-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Unisoc-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Unisoc-1068x801.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Unisoc-560x420.jpg 560w" sizes="(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px" /></p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20210729PD209.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>DigiTimes</em> </a>report, these smartphone APs from the chipmaker were made for use by Chinese handset manufacturers. The report added that the company only shipped 27.1 million smartphone APs for these Chinese brands back in 2020. Furthermore, it has also managed to expand its client list, which now includes the likes of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/honor/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Honor</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/realme/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Realme</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lenovo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lenovo</a>. In other words, this would likely lead to a notable boost in the shipments of its smartphone application processors this year.</p>
<p>At the moment, Unisoc is also one of the primary beneficiary of 4G smartphone AP supply constraints. This is due to most of the larger smartphone chipmakers like Qualcomm and MediaTek have shifted their focus to better cater to 5G smartphones. Thus, Unisoc has even benefited from a rise in shipments for 4G smartphones that are still quite common in the world&#8217;s second largest handset market, India, along with other Southeast Asian regions and more.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-334557 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform.jpg?x44794" alt="Unisoc" width="1080" height="600" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform.jpg 1080w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-300x167.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-768x427.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-1024x569.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-696x387.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-1068x593.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-756x420.jpg 756w" sizes="(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px" /></p>
<p>Notably, the company is also expected to see its share for the total smartphone APs shipped for China based smartphone makers to cross 10 percent in the second half of this year. This boost in shipments is also expected to carry forward till the first half of next year, due to the ongoing 4G smartphone AP supply constraints. For those unaware, the chipmaker primarily relies on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">TSMC</a> to manufacture its 4G smartphone APs.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://news.strategyanalytics.com/press-releases/press-release-details/2021/Apple-Dominates-with-59-Percent-Revenue-Share-in-Tablet-Apps-Processors-in-Q1-2021-Finds-Strategy-Analytics/default.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>StrategyAnalytics</em> </a>report, Apple, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/intel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Intel</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Qualcomm</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MediaTek</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-lsi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung LSI</a> held that the top five spots for the tablet applications processor (AP) market in terms of revenue share in Q1 2021. The Cupertino based giant lead this segment with a dominating 59 percent revenue share. On the other hand, Intel only had a 14 percent revenue share while Qualcomm accounted for just 10 percent.</p>
<p>Sravan Kundojjala, <span class="ContentPaneDiv"><span class="ContentPaneDiv1">Associate Director of Handset Component Technologies at Strategy Analystics added that the Cupertino based giant &#8220;increased its tablet AP revenue share to 59 percent in Q1 2021 – the company&#8217;s highest share in the past nine years. Its tablet AP revenue grew 60 percent year on year in Q1 2021, driven by new 5nm based A14 Bionic and the M1 chip. The pandemic driven demand also helped.&#8221; </span></span></p>

<p><span class="ContentPaneDiv"><span class="ContentPaneDiv1">He also stated that &#8220;MediaTek maintained its lead in non iPad tablets in unit terms, thanks to its design wins at <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/amazon/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Amazon</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lenovo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lenovo</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/asus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Asus</a> and others. Strategy Analytics estimates that MediaTek&#8217;s tablet AP shipments grew 92 percent year on year in Q1 2021, driven by its cellular and non cellular tablet APs. However, we believe that the chip maker lags in terms of average selling prices (ASP). As a result, the company posted lower revenue share compared to its unit share.&#8221; </span></span></p>

While the automakers were the first to be heavily impacted, now consumer electronics companies are also facing the heat.</p>
<p>Samsung, the world&#8217;s leading smartphone manufacturers, is reportedly facing production problems for its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-a-series">Galaxy A series</a> of phones. As per the <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=2776">report coming from Korea</a>, the company is facing issues with procuring Application Processors (AP).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-300041 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="1000" height="500" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-768x384.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-696x348.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-840x420.jpg 840w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></p>
<p>The issue is especially for the Galaxy A52, Galaxy A52 5G, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-a72-5g/">Galaxy A72</a> smartphones that were first unveiled by the South Korean giant in March this year. While these phones are launched in some European countries, only the Galaxy A52 5G is available in the US.</p>
<p>The smartphones facing issues are powered by the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a> Snapdragon 720G and Snapdragon 750G processors, manufactured by Samsung Foundry using the 8-nanometer Low Power Plus (LPP) process.</p>
<p>A report cites a person aware of the matter who works at a company that is a supplier to Samsung. Further, the report adds that the delayed production of Galaxy A-series phones is worrying other component suppliers over delayed revenues.</p>
<p>Qualcomm CEO-elect Cristiano Amon had said a couple of months ago that the chip shortage is expected to continue up to the end of this year. Samsung CEO for IT &amp; Mobile Communication Business, DJ Koh had wanted about the serious imbalance in supply and demand of chips.</p>
