Bitdefender researchers have recently uncovered a large population of apps that were infected with malware. The team found tens of thousands of apps being affected by this issue thanks to its latest anomaly detection technology.

Over 60,000 Android apps suffer from hidden malware

The researchers announced a first of its kind app with anomaly detection technology. Bitdefender’s team brought new technology into Bitdefender Mobile Security. This app was used to uncover a hidden malware campaign living undetected on devices all across the globe. The malware detection was carried out for more than six months. The researchers found that the mobile malware has been found running undiscovered for a long time on Android apps.

Bitdefender also found that the malware campaign sought to bring adware to Android enabled devices for the purpose of generating revenue. But this is just one part of the issue as the people behind this can also redirect users to other types of malware as well. This includes banking Trojans to steal the Android users sensitive credentials. Notably, this news also arrives a month after we reported on an Android trojan that was dubbed “DogeRAT”, which targeted Indian users and stole their personal and financial information

The researchers have found over 60,000 applications that carry this adware and suspects that there are plenty more apps that are affected by this issue in the app stores. The new anomaly detection technology was first deployed back in October 2022 and already found such a high number of affected apps. But without the new technology, these would’ve likely gone undiscovered for longer. Looking at some of the types of apps that are mimicked by the malware:

These posts will supposedly have a character limit of up to 500 characters.

The report further adds that the users will be able to attach other forms of media like photos, links, and videos that are up to five minutes long apart from the text based posts. It will even allow you to engage with other text posts, give lives, replies, and reposts. With this alone, it is clear that the app is quite similar to Twitter, if not downright identical in terms of interface design. Interestingly, this news also arrives after the company released an update that let user’s post GIFs in comments.

Other notable details shared include, a centralized feed similar to Twitter and Instagram that shows recommended content and follower posts. This app will even arrive with close integration with the Instagram application as well as let you sync your Instagram account to avoid the hassle of setting up a new profile. Artifact, a personalized news reader developed by Instagram co-founders, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, has now launched and is open to the public without any sign-up required. The app originally required a phone number and an invitation to try it out, which attracted initial demand but kept it out of reach for many potential users. The company received approximately 160,000 sign-ups while on the waitlist, and users outside the U.S. were unable to try Artifact, as a U.S. phone number was necessary for sign-up. With the removal of the waitlist and phone number requirement, users will now have instant access to Artifact upon its first launch. The app’s first social feature has been introduced, and feedback controls have been added to improve the news reading experience. 

Artifact’s goal is to provide tools to allow readers to personalize and expand their feed. Users can manage their interests by blocking or pausing publishers, or selecting and unselecting general interest categories. In addition, a new feature allows users to upload their contacts to see a signal that a particular article is popular within their network. This feature is different from Twitter‘s Top Articles feature, which shows articles popular with the people you follow, as Artifact’s feature is more privacy-focused. It does not tell you who read it or how many of them read it, so it keeps privacy. 

Systrom stated that the underlying technology requires a certain amount of data and a number of people using it to offer the best experience. The company believes the app is now ready for a larger audience. The newly added stats feature shows users the categories they have read, recent articles they have read within those categories, and the publishers they have been reading the most. Very few news publishing apps follow this approach. The reading is grouped more narrowly by specific topics rather than general categories. The broader goal is to expand the social experience to include a way to discuss news articles within Artifact itself. 

Artifact is a U.S.-based version of China‘s Toutiao or Japan‘s SmartNews. Apps like these utilize algorithms and machine learning to form a curated set of news articles for each user based on how they engage with the app’s content. Systrom claims that while Artifact is similar to these other personalized news readers, the “devil is in the details”. The machine learning used in Artifact is based on the transformer, which was invented in 2017 at Google. It’s interesting to note that the ‘T’ in ChatGPT stands for Transformer as well. 

Systrom compares the emergence of Artifact with the founding of Instagram when there were already other image-sharing apps available. There has to be something that distinguishes new technology from existing technology in order to create a niche in the market. In this case, that would be machine learning and other similar algorithms.

Sensor Tower report revealed that Chinese people spent 331 million US Dollars in the app (accounting for 72.3 percent of the total revenue) while people from the US spent 86.5 million US Dollars (about 19 percent). This stands to showcase the apps immense popularity and consistent growth in the industry, which may keep its competitors on their toes.

Interpol with the internet search giant Google preparing to create new applications for mobile phones to combat trade in counterfeit goods.

“Today, there is more drugs, cigarettes and other goods are counterfeit in the market. So far the community is difficult to determine whether the goods they buy genuine or not,” said Ronald Noble, head of Interpol, told to AFP recently.

“We want there to be any software that can help communities and law enforcement officials to determine the authenticity of the goods with relative ease,” said Noble.

He explained it will scan the items and the results will be immediately known whether the item is genuine or not.

Green and red
“If the application produces the green color thats means the goods is the original item. Conversely, if the application produce red color, then the goods were counterfeit,” said Noble.

At this early stage Google will enter the application for a phone with Android operating system, but Interpol hopes the application is also available for iPhone, BlackBerry, and Windows Phones devices.

One of the first users of this application is PharmaSecure, who won the contract to investigate the authenticity of more than one million packages of medicine every day in India.

Interpol will also work closely with the tobacco company British American Tobacco (BAT), Imperial Tobacco Group, Japan Tobacco International and Philip Morris International. These companies will provide special codes for their products, thus facilitating for Iterpol doing verification process more easy.
