Earlier today (24th January 2022), known car blogger @Garage 42 shared a new video on its Weibo account (a Chinese microblogging website). In the video, we can see the Huawei ADS automatic parking system in action, which caused it to garner plenty of praises.

In the video, we can see the Huawei HarmonyOS powered Arcfox Alpha S EV using the ADS Auto Parking System. The test showcases the system’s ability related to path planning and vehicle controls. The new ADS system is designed to make parking easier, and well, the Chinese tech giant’s solution managed to perform well even in difficult situations. The video shows the driver selecting the place where he wishes to park the car, and chooses a difficult region that would require complex maneuvers.

According to the blogger, this automatic parking system is the best in the market as of right now. For those unaware, ArcFox Alpha S was co-developed with BAIC and featured HarmonyOS. The new EV is the result of over a billion dollars worth of investment for research and development of EV and autonomous driving based research. It houses laser pathfinders, 12 ultrasonic radars, and 13 panoramic cameras that are powered by a Kirin 990A chipset to run its ADS system.

Earlier this year, we had reported on Huawei unveiling the Arcfox Alpha S, which was a new electric vehicle that was co-developed with BAIC and featured HarmonyOS. Now, the company has officially announced that it will begin the production and delivery for a small batch of Arcfox Alpha S units in the fourth quarter of this year.

While Huawei has stated in the past that it is not planning on building cars, it has been actively working with other carmakers for the launch of its own in car systems for both hardware and softwares. The Arcfox Alpha S is a great example of the Chinese tech giant partnering with an automobile brand for an advanced car with autonomous driving features. For those unaware, the Alpha S is the result of over a billion dollars worth of investment for research and development of EV and autonomous driving based research.

Despite the Arcfox being branded under BAIC, the new electric car’s highlighting features is the Huawei’s “HI” systems. This system is short for Huawei Inside and offers the Level 4 capabilities, which means that the car is capable of full autonomy. The car is priced between 388,900 Yuan and 429,900 Yuna (roughly 60,000 to 66,000 US Dollars) and runs HarmonyOS and related applications powered by a Huawei HiSilicon Kirin processor.

This allows it to offer automated driving, fast charging, and even cloud computing as well. While the company does claim L4, it clarified that the L4 is in experience but it is legally required to note l2 since China has only permitted a small number of companies from testing autonomous vehicles and is far from allowing consumer vehicles being driven autonomously on the urban roads. But Huawei did showcase the L4 function, with the Arcfox traveling 1,000 kilometers in a busy Chinese city without any human intervention. The car managed to achieve this through a series of sensors, including LiDAR, six millmeter wave radars, 13 ultrasonic radars, and 12 cameras along with Huawei’s own chipset for self driving.

Huawei has made a bold statement in its pursuit of a foothold in the EV market with the launch of its electric vehicle with the HarmonyOS operating system last weekend. The launch was followed up yesterday with the unveiling of five automated driving solutions deployed in cars later this year.

The product launch is a culmination of the Chinese tech giant’s investment in autonomous vehicles and EV research and development, grossing over $1 billion. As the company continues to expand beyond tech hardware and gadgets, it is already a global leader despite sanctions by the United States and its allies. Huawei seeks to become a significant player in the EV and self-driving segment of the industry by providing innovative solutions and partnerships that produce its electric vehicle in collaboration with BAIC.

The two versions of the Arcfox Alpha S EV unveiled at the weekend are co-developed by Huawei’s intelligent automotive solutions arm; and BAIC Group’s Arcfox. They are both high-end luxury electric vehicles fitted with Huawei’s homegrown HarmonyOS.

According to Wang Jun, president of the automotive arm of Huawei, the company has formed extensive partnerships and cooperation with several automakers and industry partners in its quest to continue to extend its expertise to the automotive industry. Huawei will focus on providing solutions to automakers rather than manufacturing the car itself, as it feels it can create a niche for itself in that segment.

The implication of the deployment of the HarmonyOS operating system in EVs provides exciting possibilities for EVs in terms of innovation and quality.

The Huawei EVs cost 388,900 yuan (~$59769) and 429,900 yuan (~$66,070) respectively, and reflect Huawei’s diversification outside its core business portfolio. The vehicles have a range of about 708km on a full charge, which is higher than the range of the Tesla Model Y which has a range of 594 km.

Huawei has a few other partnerships with automakers apart from BAIC Group. Chongqing Changan Automobile and Guangzhou Automobile Group are also collaborating with the 5G global leader to develop autonomous and automated vehicles.
