Recently, Asus launched ROG Phone 3 as its third-generation gaming smartphone worldwide. But the company did not announce all the variants of the handset for India. However, the firm’s Indian head has now confirmed to launch the 16GB + 512GB  of the device based on demand. Unfortunately, he also revealed the company’s plans to discontinue ROG Phone 2 in the country.

Last year’s ROG Phone 2 was only available for a short period of time in India. It was out of stock most of the times on official online retailer Flipkart. The smartphone was briefly made available last month in the country with new updated price, thanks to increased GST (Goods & Services Tax) on phones.

At the moment, the device is listed as unavailable on Flipkart, whereas the ROG Phone 3 is noted as “Coming Soon” as it is set to go on sale starting August 6. But the ROG Phone 2 may be soon removed from the platform as per Dinesh Sharma, Mobile Business Head, Asus India (via HT Tech).

The executive confirmed the discontinuation of ROG Phone 2 in India to the publication. However, he did not mention when and hence, we believe it may be available for the last time during Flipkart sale around August 5-6 when Amazon India will be hosting Prime Day sale.

According to him, customers get a better package in ROG Phone 3 compared to ROG Phone 2 and thus it makes sense for them to remove it from the shelves. However, the price difference between the two is ₹10,000, which is more according to us.

Since India is a price-sensitive market, there is a high probability of people buying the older model, which may cannibalize the sales of the newer model. But Asus could have made use of this situation like OnePlus, which still continues to sell OnePlus 7T from 2019.

Further, the Asus executive also revealed they have no plans to launch ROG Phone 3 Strix Editon powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 in India. However, they may bring the 16GB + 512GB variant of ROG Phone 3 to the country if there’s a “massive demand”.

He also hinted if it comes, it will be priced much higher and that’s the reason they stuck to only two options for the world’s second-largest smartphone market.

The Asus ROG Phone 3 will be available for the following prices starting August 6 in India.

I personally like the Asus ROG Phone II more because it is the only one to come with a glass back and it has a more elegant look, while Black Shark 3 Pro and Nubia Red Magic 5G have an aluminum body. Further, Asus ROG Phone II offers more compatibility for external accessories, including a desktop dock. On the other hand, Nubia Red Magic 5G has a more beautiful front panel since it features a higher screen-to-body ratio.

Display

Here it is a close fight, but we would pick Black Shark 3 Pro as the winner of the display comparison. Nuba Red Magic 5G offers the highest refresh rate (144 Hz), which is very important for gamers. It supports full DCI-P3 coverage, HDR10, and 240 Hz touch-sampling rate. But Asus ROG Phone II is very close with its 120 Hz refresh rate, 108% DCI-P3 gamut and HDR10. On the other hand, Black Shark 3 Pro has one of the widest panels in the Android world with a 7.1-inch diagonal. Unfortunately, it has a lower refresh rate (90 Hz) but also a higher refresh rate. But it is the only with a high Quad HD+ resolution and HDR10+. We would go for the Black Shark 3 Pro, but if we only consider gaming environments, the higher refresh rate of the Nubia Red Magic 5G is definitely more suitable.

Hardware/Software

On the paper, Nubia Red Magic 5G wins the hardware comparison. Just like the Black Shark 3 Pro, it is equipped with the Snapdragon 865 and 5G connectivity. But unlike Xiaomi’s flagship, it features 16 GB of RAM in the most expensive configuration. So if we consider the highest-end configuration, Nubia Red Magic 5G is superior. Asus ROG Phone II loses the comparison since it has an older and less powerful Snapdragon 855+ chipset. It even lacks 5G connectivity. But Asus ROG Phone II is definitely more interesting on the software side since it allows to switch between a customized user interface and stock Android.

Camera

Unfortunately, we won’t be able to give you a definitive vote about the cameras, even on the paper, until we tested both Black Shark 3 Pro and the new Nubia Red Magic 5G which became official just yesterday. On the paper, Black Shark 3 Pro looks better since its sensors have more potentialities. But we do not want to underestimate any device.

Battery

Asus ROG Phone II is the longest-lasting phone on a single charge with a huge 6000 mAh battery: one of the biggest ones ever seen on a flagship smartphone. It even supports reverse charging, but not wireless charging. Black Shark 3 Pro has the fastest charging technology with a power of 65W, and it even supports magnetic charging thanks to the presence of pins on the back cover. Thanks to magnetic charging, playing games is comfortable even while the smartphone is charging.

Price

Black Shark 3 Pro debuted with a $502/$450 starting price in China, Red Magic 5G begins at $540/€485, and Asus ROG Phone II launched in China last year with a $509/€457 starting price. Despite it is a phone from last year, Asus ROG Phone II still has something to say thanks to its amazing display, the support to more external accessories and a huge battery. But the lack of 5G connectivity and the lower-end chipset would let me go either for the Black Shark 3 Pro or the Nubia Red Magic 5G. The former (which looks slightly more interesting) has a wider display and a bigger battery, while the latter has a higher refresh rate, as well as very reactive capacitive triggers.

Design

Gaming phones usually come with an aggressive gaming-centric design. Well, that is not the case of the iQOO 3 5G. It has a more sober design with a higher screen-to-body ratio thanks to its waterdrop notch, and it is the perfect candidate for people needing a normal device with gaming-centric features and hardware. With their RGB lights and aggressive looks, Asus ROG Phone II and Black Shark 3 both come with a gaming-centric design. They carry the support to interesting external accessories (especially the ROG Phone II) and the Black Shark 3 even comes with physical shoulder buttons.

Display

On the display side, Asus ROG Phone II takes the gold medal, at least for gamers. It sports a higher DCI-P3 coverage and the highest refresh rate with 120 Hz. But you should not underestimate the display of the Black Shark 3, which we consider just slightly inferior. The Black Shark 3 has a lower 90 Hz refresh rate, but a higher touch sampling rate and the support of HDR10+ technology for great image quality. Unfortunately, iQOO 3 5G comes with a standard refresh rate and a lower (but still high) touch sampling rate of 180 Hz. It is still a great display for gaming, but Asus ROG Phone II and Black Shark 3 are more suitable.

Hardware/Software

Given that they are fueled by the more powerful Snapdragon 865 SoC, Black Shark 3 and iQOO 3 5G are stronger devices than ROG Phone II when it comes to performance. The iQOO 3 5G is also one of the first smartphones packing UFS 3.1 internal storage. Both Black Shark 3 and iQOO 3 5G support the 5G connectivity (note that only the highest-end memory configuration of the iQOO 3 does), while Asus ROG Phone II does not. But the ROG Phone II is the only to offer up to 1 TB of native storage, it is important to note since none of these devices feature expandable internal storage. All feature Wi-Fi 6 support, but only the iQOO 3 5G supports Bluetooth 5.1.

Camera

The presence of a great quad camera setup including a telephoto sensor and a good 48 MP main sensor makes iQOO 3 the most interesting camera phone, but Black Shark 3 should still provide a good photo quality with its 64 MP triple camera. We can not tell you which one clicks the best photos since they are yet to be available to purchase, but on the paper, ROG Phone II looks less suitable for photos.

Battery

Asus ROG Phone II wins the battery life comparison thanks to a way bigger 6000 mAh battery, followed by the Black Shark 3 packing a 4720 mAh battery. Black Shark 3 has the fastest charging technology with a power of 65W and it supports magnetic charging (pins on the back), so that you can charge it while playing without having a cable between your fingers. Asus ROG Phone II supports 30W fast charging and reverse charging, while iQOO 3 5G supports a faster 55W charging technology.

Price

iQOO 3 5G starts at €463/$515 in China, Black Shark 3 ranges from €450/$502 to €517/$575, and ROG Phone II starts from €457/$509. There is not a definitive winner of this comparison. If you are looking for a device with the widest range of external accessories, the best display for gaming and the biggest battery, Asus ROG Phone II is a better option. But BS3 and iQOO 3 5G are definitely more interesting for average users since they offer higher performance, 5G, and petty nice cameras. Which one would you pick?

The best display for gamers belongs to the Asus ROG Phone II. With a high 120 Hz refresh rate and a 240 Hz touch sampling rate, it is one of the smoothest and most reactive panels ever seen on a mobile phone. If you care more about having the best image quality while streaming content, then OnePlus 7T is an amazing option with its HDR10+ certification. But overall, we would pick the display of the Asus ROG Phone II. Unfortunately, Vivo iQOO 3 lacks a high refresh rate, but it still offers a great screen with a 180 Hz touch sampling rate and HDR10+.

Hardware/Software

The presence of Snapdragon 865 makes the iQOO 3 superior to its two rivals. The iQOO 3 is also the only phone of this trio to support 5G connectivity, but only in the most expensive configuration with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of native storage. Further, iQOO 3 is the only with the new UFS 3.1 internal storage, while OnePlus 7T and Asus ROG Phone II come with a slower UFS 3.0 storage. Android 10 is out of the box on the OnePlus 7T and iQOO 3, while Asus ROG Phone II had it through a software update. Asus ROG Phone II actually allows you to switch between a customized user interface and stock Android.

Camera

The presence of an amazing 48 MP sensor with a bright f/1.6 focal aperture and OIS makes OnePlus 7T the best camera phone of this comparison. The handset also sports a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and a 16 MP ultrawide sensor. Further, it has a great 16 MP front camera. Right after, we got the iQOO 3 with a 48 MP quad camera including a telephoto lens as well. But despite its four sensors, we believe OnePlus 7T will be more convincing. Asus ROG Phone II is all but a camera phone, it comes with just a dual camera, but this does not mean it is bad at taking photos. It has good autofocus and captures a high detail, but not at the same level as its rivals.

Battery

Asus ROG Phone II is the king of battery life and it is one of the flagships with the longest lasting battery, so it wins the battery comparison. It sports a huge 6000 mAh battery with the support to reverse charging. iQOO 3 has the fastest charging technology and still a great battery with a 4400 mAh capacity, while OnePlus 7T has just an average 3800 mAh unit. Until today, we did not see any last-generation flagship offering a superior battery life to the Asus ROG Phone II.

Price

In India, you can currently grab a unit of the ROG Phone II for about Rs. 37,999 in the base variant. OnePlus 7T costs about Rs. 34,090, while iQOO 3 is coming soon in India with a starting price of about Rs. 36,990. OnePlus 7T and Asus ROG Phone II can be found globally with street prices inferior to €500/$550, while iQOO 3 is not available in the global market. If cameras are not your priority and you do not care about 5G, we believe Asus ROG Phone II is still able to offer something more compared to its opponents. But OnePlus 7T comes with a really good camera and a very affordable price, while iQOO 3 has definitely the best hardware. The choice mostly depends on the kind of user you are, that is why we will not pick a definitive winner for this comparison.

Xiaomi Mi 10 and ZTE Axon 10s Pro are powered by a better chipset: the Snapdragon 865. It is currently the best chipset you can find on Android-powered devices. The Asus ROG Phone II is fueled by the best Qualcomm chipset of 2019: the Snapdragon 855+. But even though it has a lower-end chipset, you should not underestimate the Asus ROG Phone II. Its SoC has lower performance, but the smartphone comes with an amazing cooling system, up to 1 TB of internal storage (which you do not get on the Xiaomi Mi 10 and ZTE Axon 10s Pro) and the support to interesting external accessories such as a desktop dock. On the other hand, Asus ROG Phone II lacks 5G connectivity, unlike its rivals. And it runs Android 9 Pie out of the box, but it was updated to Android 10.

Camera

On the paper, Xiaomi Mi 10 has a much better camera department. It mounts a quad camera including a great 108 Megapixel main sensor with OIS, an ultrawide sensor, a dedicated macro camera, and a depth sensor. Unlike the ZTE Axon 10s Pro coming with 3x optical zoom, Xiaomi Mi 10 lacks a telephoto sensor and this may be a big con for several users. The weakest point of the Asus ROG Phone II is the camera department: it has just a dual camera and it does not even come with OIS.

Battery

Asus ROG Phone II is the winner of the battery comparison since it packs a mammoth 6000 mAh battery and it is one of the longest-lasting flagships on a single charge. Unfortunately, it does not support wireless charging, unlike Xiaomi Mi 10 and ZTE Axon 10s Pro. But that huge battery can also be used as a power bank through wired charging. The silver medal goes to Xiaomi Mi 10 with a 4780 mAh battery, the fastest charging speeds, wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.

• Keep the battery charged at least up to 50% for smooth unlocking.

The former offers the HDR10+ certification (unlike the ROG Phone 2) as well as a high 90 Hz refresh rate. The latter employs a new Super AMOLED Plus panel with improved image quality. But I define Asus ROG Phone II more advanced.

Asus ROG Phone II and OnePlus 7T are equipped with the most powerful chipset: the Snapdragon 855+. But we are going to give the gold medal to the Asus ROG Phone II only since it has a more powerful memory configuration: it offers up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of UFS 3.0 native storage. You can get only 8 GB of RAM on the OnePlus 7T. Asus ROG Phone II is the only one still based on Android Pie out of the box, but it has already been updated to Android 10 and it lets you switch between a custom and a stock Android user interface.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite offers the most advanced camera department. It consists of a triple 48 MP rear camera with a brand new optical stabilization technology (Super Steady OS) reaching awesome results in terms of photo quality. ASUS, the Taiwanese company is one of the first smartphone makers to launch a gaming smartphone and so far, it has launched a couple of devices in the ROG Phone lineup.

Now, a new report coming from China claims that the company is expected to ship less than 400,000 units of its second-generation gaming smartphone — ASUS ROG Phone II in the year 2019.

The main reason behind falling short of shipping 400,000 units of the gaming smartphone is touted to be the shortfall in components supply and not-so-smooth production planning at the company’s production facility in China.

However, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), Asustek Computer has been appraised as the most valuable Taiwan-based global brand in 2019 for the seventh consecutive year.

Coming to the ASUS ROG Phone II, the smartphone flaunts a 6.59-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 10-bit HDR, Gorilla Glass 6 protection, 1ms response time, a 49ms touch latency, and a touch sampling rate of 240Hz.

It comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor, has stereo front-facing speakers with DTS:X 7.1 surround sound, and an NXP 9874 Smart Amplifier. It is the first smartphone to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset and comes packed with up to 12GB RAM and 512GB internal storage.

Last month, Asus released its latest gaming-centric smartphone, the ROG Phone 2. As we already know the device packs impressive features some of which include a gigantic 6,000 mAh battery and a 6.6 inch AMOLED display with a remarkable refresh rate of 120 Hz. Recently, the device was subjected to a teardown by the famous Youtuber JerryRigEverything that has revealed shocking findings of the design preferences chosen by Asus.

The trapezoidal plastic piece with a metal grille on its back which originally seemed like a vent to provide active cooling while the CPU is processing heavy loads, turned out to be a sham and is nothing more than a cosmetic addition.

Besides, the narrow metal grille makes it one of the least water-resistant smartphones of 2019. As liquid would seep right in, even when dripped at an angle, leave alone sub-merging it underwater. Having said that, Asus never claimed the device to be water-resistant but this could be a downer for some especially the ones who have been spoiled by the laudable IP ratings on other flagships from Apple or Samsung.

ASUS, the Taiwan-based smartphone maker launched its new gaming smartphone — ASUS ROG Phone 2 in July this year and now the company is all set to launch the same device in the Indian market.

The company has today confirmed that the ASUS ROG Phone 2 gaming smartphones will be launched in India on 23rd September. It has also revealed that the phone will be available for purchase through online marketplace Flipkart.

The ASUS ROG Phone 2 features a 6.59-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 10-bit HDR, Gorilla Glass 6 protection, 1ms response time, a 49ms touch latency, and a touch sampling rate of 240Hz.

It comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor, has stereo front-facing speakers with DTS:X 7.1 surround sound, and an NXP 9874 Smart Amplifier. It is the first smartphone to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset and comes packed with up to 12GB RAM and 512GB internal storage.

Coming to the camera department, the device comes equipped with a dual-camera setup on the back, featuring a 48MP Sony IMX586 primary camera and a 13MP super wide-angle camera. On the front side, it features a 24MP snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

It also has improved touch-sensitive triggers on the side with better haptic feedback. There is also a liquid cooling system called GameCool II with a 3D vapor chamber. The famous Aura logo is also on the back and is customizable too.

The ASUS ROG Phone 2 is powered by a 6,000mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging, USB-PD, and Quick Charge 4+. The Tencent Elite version with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage is priced at ¥3499 (~$509) while the Classic Version with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage costs ¥5999 (~$872).

The phone also comes in Extreme Edition which is priced at ¥7999 (~$1163) and will be available in the fourth quarter of the year. The last is e-Sports Armor Editon that carries a price tag of ¥12,999 (~$1890).

Specs & Software

The amazing Snapdragon 855+ chipset (the best you can actually find in the Android market) and up to 12 GB of RAM are common on all the phones in this trio. What makes the difference is the internal storage (besides the cooling system, but each of them has a very efficient cooling system): Asus ROG Phone 2 will debut in the global market with up to 1 TB of storage (UFS 3.0), while Nubia Red Magic 3S and Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro stop at 256 GB. Further, Asus ROG Phone II allows switching between a stock Android user interface and a custom UI, and it is the only gaming phone that allows you to do this.

But for a gamer on a budget, you end up getting larger storage on the Black Shark 2 Pro instead of the Red Magic 3S at a similar price tag. However, in terms of sheer specs, all three smartphones will handle everything you throw at it without any hiccups.

Gaming Features

The ASUS ROG Phone 2 is undoubtedly the king of mobile gaming with 2 x USB Type-C ports, Air triggers, a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack, and support for a slew of accessories like a heat sink, ROG Active Cooler II, Mobile desktop dock, and even a TwinView Dock II.

However, if you look at the Red Magic 3S, it doesn’t lag very far behind. Nubia’s new phone also features virtual buttons on the side for additional controls (you can even use the fingerprint sensor as a button during gameplay), liquid and active fan cooling, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and separate pins for special accessories like the e-sport RedMagic docking station.

Unfortunately, the Black Shark 2 Pro doesn’t have a separate port/ pins for docking accessories. It doesn’t even have AirTriggers or virtual buttons on the side, so you have to rely on its Master touch 2.0, which is basically customized touch zones on the left and right side of the screen. You do have a few accessories like portable gamepads, but both Red Magic 3S and ROG Phone II does better when it comes to gaming-centric features.

Camera

The camera is the weakest point of gaming phone and these are no exception. Nubia Red Magic 3S is equipped with just a single camera on its rear side and that is a bit disappointing, while Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro and Asus ROG Phone 2 sport dual camera configurations. The former has a secondary telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, while the latter has an ultrawide sensor. However, the differences between camera quality will be marginal.

Battery

The 6000 mAh battery on board of the Asus ROG Phone 2 will provide the longest battery life. Nubia Red Magic 3S has a 5000 mAh battery but it has to manage a real cooling fan, so we do not believe it will be at the same level as the ROG Phone 2 in any scenario. You should also consider that Asus ROG Phone 2 is the only to support reverse charging (not wireless) and it can be used as a power bank to charge other devices.

Black Shark 2 Pro has the smallest battery among in this trio, so it shouldn’t be at par as the ROG Phone 2 or even the Red Magic 3S.

Price

Overall, Asus ROG Phone 2 wins this comparison because of its better display, long-lasting battery and more additional features. But it costs more: in the global market, it is debuting with a $509/€460 price tag. However, it is worth spending a bit more to get a way better phone.

The value for money prize goes to the Nubia Red Magic 3S and its $420/€380 price tag. Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro is available at the same starting price, but Nubia’s flagship has slightly more interesting features (air cooling system, 4D vibration feedback, 3D surround sound, pressure-sensitive zones, and more).

AnTuTu’s Android Performance list is a good indicator of the top smartphones of the month in terms of sheer power. Today the benchmarking app has released the Top 10 Android Performance Phones for August 2019 and there are no real surprises in the list. The recently announced Snapdragon 855 Plus smartphones top the list. However, there are slight variations in the placement of the flagships, all thanks to the changes made in the new AnTuTu v8.0.

So before we actually take a look at the phones in the list, let’s see what these changes are. First, AnTuTu v8.0 considers the storage variant of each device while ranking the phones in the list. Larger the storage, better the ranking. Simply put, scores will differ among the different variants of the same device. The new version also takes the screen refresh rates into account. So it’s no surprise that OnePlus 7 Pro jumps up a few places (vs June’s ranking) in August’s ranking due to its 90Hz screen.

Now coming to the AnTuTu Android Performance list for August 2019, Black Shark 2 Pro 12GB+256GB variant takes the lead with 469,708 points. This isn’t surprising given that it features the new Snapdragon 855+ processor with UFS 3.0. In the second place is the 8GB+128GB version of the ROG Phone 2.

The new ROG phone also features the latest SD855+ chipset, so it’s not surprising to see it placed on top. However, note that there’s a 12GB RAM version of this phone and given that there’s hardly any difference in its score vs Black Shark 2 Pro, it’s likely that the ROG Phone 2 12GB RAM model will top this list. In case you are wondering why we haven’t seen the higher-end model of the ROG Phone 2, note that AnTuTu considers a sample size of at least 1000 scores for this list.

In the third place is the OnePlus 7 Pro 12GB + 256GB variant which jumps up a few places because of its 90Hz screen. Then there’s the Nubia Red Magic 3 8GB + 128GB in the fourth place, followed by OnePlus 7 12GB + 256GB, Black Shark 2 8GB + 256GB, and Xiaomi Mi 9 8GB + 256GB.

What’s really interesting is that the ZTE Axon 10 Pro also makes it in this list but it’s the only phone with 6GB RAM. All the rest have at least 8GB RAM onboard. Meizu 16S 8GB + 128GB and Redmi K20 Pro 8GB + 256GB complete the list.

Master Lu, a benchmarking platform for smartphones from China has released its list of top 10 best performing smartphones for July 2019. The list includes some smartphones that are powered by new chipsets such as Snapdragon 855+, Kirin 810, Snapdragon 730, Snapdragon 730G and Helio P65. The list is led by the ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G gaming smartphone.

The Axon 10 Pro 5G leads Master Lu’s best performing smartphones list with 409,008 score. It is followed by Snapdragon 855+ powered ASUS ROG Phone 2 gaming smartphone with a score 390,015. Placed on the third position is the Snapdragon 845 powered iQOO Neo gaming phone with a score 330,801. Master Lu claimed since the benchmarked ROG Phone 2 was an engineering unit, it recorded a low score. Probably, the final product is benchmarked, it may take over the numero uno position on Master Lu benchmarks list. By next month, the list may include new phones like Black Shark 2 Pro and iQOO Pro 5G phones that are powered by Snapdragon 855+.

The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G with 299,866 score is on fourth. It is fueled by the Kirin 980 chipset. The fifth position goes to Kirin 810 chipset powered Honor 9X Pro. It has recorded a score of 267,339. The Nova 5i Pro that features the same SoC as 9X Pro is sixth with 262,425 score. The Honor 9X is the third Kirin 810 in the list with a benchmarking score of 260,087.

The Snapdragon 665 powered Xiaomi Mi CC9e has bagged the twelfth ranking with a score of 184,607. Lastly, the Vivo Y7s with Helio P65 onboard has occupied the thirteenth position with 179,585 Master Lu score.

LED lights are obviously not missing, but note that Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro is a lot more compact and lightweight than its rival.

Display

When it comes to the display there is no challenge: Asus ROG Phone 2 is a clear winner. First of all, it has a bigger panel. Secondly, it comes with a better color reproduction thanks to both a high 108 percent DCI-P3 coverage and the HDR10 technology. Last but not least, the display has a 120 Hz refresh ratio which is something amazing for a gaming phone. And it even features 240 Hz touch sensing for more reactive gameplay. Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro lacks a lot of these things. It still comes with high DCI-P3 coverage (100 percent) and 240 Hz touch sensing, but it does not have 120 Hz refresh ratio and it is not even HDR10-compliant.

Specs & Software

Performance is the key feature of these devices: they are both equipped with the best processor out there: an octa-core Snapdragon 855 Plus which offers 15 percent more graphics performance compared to its predecessor, as well as a higher clock frequency. With its UFS 3.0 storage, Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro just obtained the highest score ever seen on AnTuTu (500k), but we believe Asus ROG Phone 2 will be at the same level. Note that the latter will even allow users to switch between a stock Android user interface and a customized one for true gamers.

Camera

These are not camera phones, but it does not mean that they have a bad camera quality. They are more or less at the same level with a main 48 MP sensor without OIS, as well as a secondary telephoto sensor. Note that Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro comes with 1920 fps super slow motion video recording, while Asus ROG Phone 2 has a laser autofocus mechanism. Do you prefer better photos or better videos?

Battery

Here Asus ROG Phone 2 wins because it is not a simple battery phone: it is more like a power bank. It is equipped with a mammoth 6000 mAh battery which even supports reverse wireless charging for a lot of hours of gameplay. Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro comes with a standard 4000 mAh battery, so there is definitely no challenge. Asus ROG Phone 2 has even a faster charging technology, but given that its battery is a lot bigger, it will never reach 100 percent before its opponent.

Price

Asus ROG Phone 2 just launched in China with a €900/$1000 starting price, while Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro costs just €450/$500 in its most affordable variant. Asus ROG Phone 2 is a lot better than its opponent due to the support to external accessories, a better display, a better build quality, and even a bigger battery and more complete software. But if you only care about performance and not about the features mentioned above, then you should go for the Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro as it is offered at half of the price.

As soon as Qualcomm announced the Xiaolong 855 Plus, more than five handset makers decided they’d launch a new smartphone equipped with the latest flagship chip in the second half of this year.

ASUS is the only manufacturer with Snapdragon 855 Plus and has already incorporated the chipset in the latest smartphone called ASUS ROG Phone 2. Details about exactly when will other manufacturers use this chipset is still far and between.

Aside from the aforesaid upgrade, ASUS is slated to roll out the usual updates to the ROG Phone configuration based on this hardware in collaboration with Tencent cooperation, offering a superior gaming experience to its huge fanbase.

As soon as I arrived at the office today, WinBoy editor handed me a briefcase and said a three-digital password. This gave me an impression that I might be checking the military computer of Latitude 7214. I didn’t expect to open the briefcase but just to take a quick glimpse of ROG Phone 2.

However, it took a whopping 3 minutes to get the smartphone and its accessories out of the briefcase.

The texture is the highlight of the design

The ROG Phone 2 seems to bear a striking resemblance to its 2018 predecessor as far as the design is concerned.

The slender body, which is bigger than my palm also looks quite familiar. Given that there is no specific use of the front of the shaped screen, the phone isn’t very unique in terms of aesthetics. The ROG breathing light, the hexagonal camera, the Maya covering the back Pattern, and the striking plating color are likely to grab your attention.

Even if the special-shaped screen develops in Android for a couple of years, it is worth noting that there are several games that are still not compatible with waterdrop notch and bangs screens seen on some new smartphones.

In my opinion, the most appealing aspect of the screen is the 120Hz refresh rate. To facilitate user control of power consumption, ROG also provides a 60 / 90 / 120Hz three-speed refresh rate option in the settings.

However, as a person who has been “sweet” by a 90-liter 90-Hz screen, a person who does not leave the charging treasure, I, of course often open 120Hz, and then enjoy the silky as a pleasure.

Another evident adjustment can be seen in the design of the Maya pattern and the side edge cutting. The Maya pattern in the back area is no longer placed near the camera but stretches more boldly to the sides of the phone, and the viewing experience is more engaging than the previous generation.

The knife-cut modular filter screen has been replaced with a stripe design, unlike the previous two quadrilaterals. This portion looks more restrained now than the bolder Maya pattern.

As a technical editor, I have used multiple phones including the iPhone XS Max (208 g) and Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium (236 g). The ROG Phone 2’s 240 g weight; however, redefines what I knew about the weight of the mobile phone (data source Ministry of Information Technology).

Taking accessories into consideration, the expansion performance of the ROG Phone 2 is nothing short of impressive. Aside from the 3D Vapor Chamber condensing system + copper plate thermal pad + graphene thermal pad design of the mobile phone body, similar to the ROG Phone last year, the new machine features an external cooling fan.

As a result, the side of the old and new ROG Phones will have a set of interfaces for external accessories, unlike ordinary phones. Moreover, we can connect the fan to the mobile phone and enable heat dissipation. Regrettably, this increases the overall weight of the mobile phone.

Thankfully, the ROG Phone 2 gaming smartphone has not dumped the headphone hole, and it is a wise decision, according to me.

The first Snapdragon 855 Plus has excellent performance

ASUS’s decision to employ the Snapdragon 855 Plus for its ROG Phone 2 isn’t surprising at all. Given that the ROG Phone used the upscale version of the Snapdragon 845 last year, ASUS has enjoyed a “special treatment” from Qualcomm.

Keeping in line with that, ASUS launched the Snapdragon 855 Plus, which seems more like the bloody version of 2018’s Dragon 845 to me. The only difference is that the upgraded Snapdragon 855 Plus broke the Qualcomm’s consistent product rhythm and was highly praised, and Qualcomm made it available to more manufacturers outside of Asus.

While I didn’t expect much from the Snapdragon 855 Plus before opening the box, it turned out to be the strongest Android phone as soon as I started checking this 855 Plus+12GB+512GB. It is the strongest Android phone. I even figured out the big difference between the Snapdragon 855 and the Apple A12 after running points, games, and comparisons.

This Qualcomm does not include too many adjustments to the configuration of the Snapdragon 855 Plus, particularly in terms of core frequency and GPU performance optimization:

• The core frequency has been upgraded from 2.84GHz to 2.96GHz of the Snapdragon 855;
• The graphics core Adreno 640 is optimized for gaming and entertainment features, with a 15% improvement in performance.

The 3D Mark score shows the gap between the two Adreno 640s. In the Sling Shot Extreme OpenGL ES 3.1 test, the Snapdragon 855 Plus scored 6203 points, which is higher than the 5,038 points of the Snapdragon 855.

In the Vulkan performance, the Snapdragon 855 Plus surpasses the 5,057 points of the Snapdragon 855 with a score of 5393.

As far as processing power is concerned, the up-and-down Snapdragon 855 Plus can’t outperform the Apple A series in terms of single-core performance, but it has a significant improvement compared to the Snapdragon 855, which is already very strong, so this product without an iota of doubt, deserves to sit on the throne of the strongest processor in the Android camp this year.

I tested the two scenarios without a fan and “installing fan + strongest wind speed”. From the measured data, starting from 4% for 30 minutes, it can charge 37% of the electricity; the whole process is charged to 99%, which takes 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Once it was fully charged, I left no stone unturned in a bid to utilize the full battery life. However, I found it difficult to use up the 6000mAh battery.

I started with the zero points on the 22nd, because I was just full of electricity at that time, after 8 hours of standby, the phone power was 96%. After finishing my work, I played games for 1.5 hours, listened to the songs for about one hour, watched 50 minutes of online video, and used WeChat Weibo continuously without going offline. Until the 23rd, my phone still has 10% remaining power, the phone shows the total screen time is 5 hours and 45 minutes.

It should be noted that this test is performed under the condition of a 120Hz screen refresh rate. If you use 60Hz used by most mobile phones, the battery life may get 1.5 days/charge level.

The camera performance is in line with the mainstream, which is good enough

Since the starting of this year, all sorts of mobile phones, whether it carries a one-thousand-yuan price tag or retail for thousands of dollars, the 48 million-pixel CMOS in the past six months, has evolved from a new thing to the current standard configuration of the Android flagships.

In the excitement of the camera, pixel jumped to a higher level again, I also had to admire the application speed of the new domestic mobile phone technology.

The apple logo in the proofs can still see the full details after the image is enlarged, and the text under the logo can be displayed clearly after zooming in.

We turned on the automatic HDR mode of ROG Phone 2 at the time of the shooting. With the aid of HDR, the details of the clouds hidden in the highlights can be expressed, while the light and dark matching of the clouds highlight the layering.

Of course, this sample still retains a trace of HDR processing. If the user wants the picture to look more natural, you can adjust the contrast after shooting, and the picture will be better.

The close-up ability of the phone is also something to shout about. The surface details can be clearly displayed when shooting food. The blurring of close-up shooting is not bad either.

The color of ROG Phone 2 is primarily based on reduction, and it does not offer too many color adjustment, so it is still relatively flat when shooting food. For a more vivid and appealing color effect, you need to do some post-adjustment after shooting.

For nighttime photography, the ROG Phone 2 delivers an average imaging performance. We turned off automatic HDR shooting and found that ROG Phone 2 is still able to do light control work. While the night sky can be kept clean, we still managed to capture some of the details of the cloud in the picture.

Despite a complicated light environment on the opposite side, the ROG Phone 2 provides a stable output and capture perfect photos with color reproduction. However, because there is no automatic HDR assistance, some of the lighting positions are still exposed.

In addition to maintaining stability, it is imperative for the user to pay attention to the selection of the metering point. In this complex lighting scene, there are certain occasions when you need to press the exposure to retain more detail in the light.

While the ROG Phone 2 can keep the sky clean, there are still a lot of obvious smearing feelings when zooming in on the picture, and you are likely to experience a situation of low resolution at night. Note that these problems are only noticeable when you enlarge the image. It is ideally used to send Weibo and friends, but the impact is not impressive by any stretch of the imagination.

The battery is like a bull, a big horsepower muscle car

Here it is a hard fight between Razer Phone 2 and Asus ROG Phone 2. The former provides a higher level of detail as well as a higher peak brightness, while the latter comes with a lower detail but a better color reproduction (thanks to the HDR10 technology and high DCI-P3 coverage) and 240 Hz touch sensing for a more reactive gaming experience. Asus ROG Phone 2 debuted in China with a €900/$1000 starting price, Razer Phone 2 started from €850/$950 (but now it dropped a lot), and Vivo iQOO starts from just €400/$445. A couple of days ago, Asus held a launch event in China where it officially launched its next-generation gaming smartphone — Asus ROG Phone 2 and soon after that, the company started taking registrations for the device.

Today, the company revealed that it has received over 2.33 million reservations for the ROG Phone II on JD.com. The smartphone, which starts at 3,499 yuan, comes with the best specs and features aimed at gaming users.

Coming to the specifications, the Asus ROG Phone 2 has a 6.59-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 10-bit HDR, Gorilla Glass 6 protection, 1ms response time, a 49ms touch latency, and a touch sampling rate of 240Hz.

It has stereo front-facing speakers with DTS:X 7.1 surround sound, an NXP 9874 Smart Amplifier, a 24MP front-facing camera, and an in-display fingerprint scanner. A 48MP Sony IMX586 primary camera sits on the rear with a 13MP super wide-angle camera. It also has improved touch-sensitive triggers on the side with better haptic feedback.

There’s a USB Type-C port at the bottom that supports USB 2.0 transfer, Quick Charge 3.0 and USB Power Delivery 3.0. The side-mounted USB-C port supports USB 3.1 Gen 2 transfer speeds (up to 10GBps), 4K video output thanks to DisplayPort 1.4, Quick Charge 3.0, Quick Charge 4.0, and USB Power Delivery 3.0.

The ROG Phone 2 packs a 6000mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging, USB-PD, and Quick Charge 4+ fast charging. It has Dual-SIM support, NFC, FM Radio, and 3.5mm audio jack. The company has also added a liquid cooling system called GameCool II with a 3D vapor chamber.

Besides USB-C port on the side, there’s a proprietary port for pairing accessories like the TwinView Dock II, the Mobile Desktop Dock, and the AeroActive Cooler II. However, Asus has not yet revealed the pricing details of these accessories.

The Snapdragon 855+ promises a 15 percent increase for GPU speed and it has a higher 2.96 GHz compared to 2.84 GHz of the vanilla Snapdragon 855. Further, Asus ROG Phone 2 has 512 GB of internal storage in its higher-end version, while the most expensive configuration of the Xiaomi Black Shark 2 and the Nubia Red Magic 3 have a 256 GB storage. With the Asus ROG Phone 2 you can even switch between a stock Android user interface and the customized, gaming-centric ROG UI. So it wins even when it comes to the software.

Camera

Despite according to the specs on the paper, it is very close to Xiaomi Black Shark 2, we believe that Asus ROG Phone 2 will be the winner even when it comes to the rear department. Thanks to the laser autofocus system, focusing should be better. And the secondary ultrawide sensor will be more useful than the telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom found on the Xiaomi Black Shark 2. Nubia Red Magic 3 has just a single camera and it is all but a camera phone. Even the selfie camera seems better on the Asus ROG Phone 2 with its high 24 MP resolution.

Asus, which launched the ROG Phone last year as the company’s first gaming smartphone, is now gearing up to launch its successor. The Asus ROG Phone 2 is all set to get launched in China on 23rd July.

Ahead of the phone’s launch, a couple of real-life images of the upcoming gaming smartphone have been leaked online, which sheds light on the type of design we can expect from the device.

The images show that the phone will come with a traditional design without any kind of notch or punch-hole in the display. The front-facing camera on the smartphone is located in the top-right corner.

It also shows that the smartphone can be connected to an external screen but at that time, the user won’t be able to manually adjust the refresh rate and it will be dependent on the frequency of the external screen.

The company has already confirmed that the Asus ROG Phone 2 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus processor, making it the first smartphone to come powered by this updated chipset.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus Mobile Platform comes with Kryo 485 CPU built on Arm Cortex and runs at a clock speed of up to 2.96GHz, higher than the SD855. The Adreno 640 GPU also offers a 15 percent increased performance and the SoC is aimed at gaming smartphones.

The phone’s display will also come with support for 120Hz refresh rate and the company has also partnered with Tencent for enhancing the gaming experience on the device as well as suitable gaming content.

We expect the smartphone to be running Android 9 Pie operating system out-of-the-box with the company’s own custom interface on top. It has already been revealed that the phone will support 30W fast charging but the battery capacity is not yet known.

Since the past couple of years, a new category of smartphones is gaining popularity — gaming smartphones. Asus, the Taiwan-based technology company was among the first ones to launch a gaming smartphone under its ROG brand, dubbed as Asus ROG Phone.

Now, the company has been working on its next-generation gaming smartphone, which is named Asus ROG Phone 2. After speculations, the company has confirmed that the ROG Phone 2 will be launched on 23rd July in China, as we had earlier reported. Asus has also started sending out media invites for the launch event.

The poster shared by the company for the announcement of the launch date of ROG Phone 2 also confirms the continued partnership of Asus’ Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand and Chinese giant Tencent Games, the company behind hugely popular PUBG game.

While the company has not revealed any details about the upcoming gaming smartphone, Asus ROG Phone 2 is rumored to come with an improved display as well as a powerful processor. It could have a Super AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, similar to its predecessor, ROG Phone.

The phone is said to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core 7nm flagship processor, which is currently the most popular chipset from the company. It powers most of the flagship phones launched this year so far.

It has also been revealed that the device will come with a horizontally placed dual-camera setup on the rear. The phone will come with either 18W charger or a 30W charger, depending on the variant (I001DA and I001DB). We expect the phone to have at least with a top-end variant having 12GB of RAM.

The ASUS ROG Phone launched last year comes with a 6-inch AMOLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio and is powered by a Snapdragon 845 chipset coupled with 8GB of RAM and 128/512 GB of internal storage. It features a 12 MP + 8 MP dual camera setup and a selfie camera of 8 MP. It houses a 4,000mAh battery that supported 30W fast charging.

ASUS had announced the ROG Phone gaming smartphone in June 2018. Hence, the arrival of its successor is overdue. The Taiwanese firm has now confirmed that the ROG Phone 2 will be arriving with a display that will offer a refresh rate 120 Hz. Now that the company has started sharing official information on the ROG Phone 2, its arrival could be close at hand.

ASUS has collaborated with “Under the One Man” game from China and has said that its next ROG Phone will offer increased refresh rate. The firm has also promised that upcoming games will be enhanced to deliver 120 Hz experience. The ROG Phone that had released last year supported 90 Hz refresh rate. The ROG Phone 2 will be third phone apart from Razer Phone and Razer Phone 2 to arrive with 120 Hz display.

The Taiwanese firm had recently confirmed through Weibo that it will be working with Tencent Games for the ROG Phone 2. The Chinese gaming firm will assist in enhancing the gaming experience on the upcoming ROG phone.

The other specifications of the ROG Phone 2 are currently under the wraps. However, it is being speculating that the Snapdragon 855 chipset will be present under the hood of the ROG Phone 2. Also, its highest configuration model could be equipped with 12 GB of RAM. There is a possibility that the smartphone may come with a robust heat dissipation system and it may sport a better design. ASUS has also mentioned in a Weibo post that the ROG Phone 2 will be launching in July. However, the exact launch date is yet to be disclosed.

Asus unveiled the new gaming smartphone series last year with its maiden ROG phone. It was launched with an expensive price tag of $900 in the US, whereas the 512GB storage variant was priced at $1100. To counter the increasing competition, Asus planning to launch a sequel later this year.

According to a DigiTimes report, the second generation ROG phone will surface in Q3, 2019. Tencent will be the official advertising partner for the new Asus gaming smartphone. Asus is focusing on garnering profits from the growing Chinese smartphone gaming market.

The company further eyes to rejuvenate its devices with the continuation of its partnership with Tencent in the future.

The new ASUS ROG phone will be the first device after the company’s reworked strategy to focus on gaming and premium segment phones. In December 2018, Asus worked its way to reduce losses by eliminating the entry-level and mid-level devices from its brochure.

The ASUS ROG phone launched last year carries 8GB RAM, 128GB internal storage, 6.0-inch Full HD+ display and a 4000 mAh battery with fast charging technology. The device also features a dual rear camera consisting a 12 MP + 8 MP sensors, and an 8 MP single lens on the front side. Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC is present with GameCool system to resist high temperatures while gaming.
