ZenUI on ASUS smartphones is now closer to stock Android than ever before. However, the company still takes time to roll out updates. For instance, Xiaomi and OPPO have already released Android 11-based MIUI 12 and ColorOS 11 for multiple devices. On the other hand, the Taiwanese company has only rolled out its first Android 11 Beta build for a single device.

Anyway, the update is here (via XDA Developers) and it brings all the core features of Android 11 like Chat Bubble, Notification History, Bluetooth in Airplane mode to name a few. Further, it finally adds support for gesture navigation for third-party features. We are not sure why ASUS waited until Android 11 to add it.

Interestingly, rather than adding new features, Android 11 for ZenFone 6 removes some old functions and apps like Private Listening, ZenUI Help, Smart group, Icon alignment, Icon packs, and Avast scanning engine. The new update also integrates PowerMaster features into Battery settings.

Design

Asus and Samsung put much effort into creating innovative designs this year, especially with these two devices. Both Asus Zenfone 6 and Samsung Galaxy A80 come with rotating camera modules in order to guarantee a notch-less display and let people use the rear cameras as front camera. This also results in very narrow bezels around the display, with the Samsung Galaxy A80 boasting the highest screen-to-body ratio. Both the phones have a glass back and an aluminum frame, but unlike the Zenfone 6, the Samsung Galaxy A80 has an in-display fingerprint scanner instead of a rear-mounted one. I even like more the rotating mechanism of the Galaxy A80, if we only talk about the aesthetics.

Display

The best display panel is undoubtedly the one found on the Realme X2 Pro. It is the only to support the HDR10+ standard for richer image quality, especially with multimedia content. Further, it has a 100 percent DCI P3 coverage and even a higher 90 Hz refresh rate that is very great for gamers. Despite being an IPS panel, the display found on the Zenfone 6 is still a high-end screen with a Full DCI P3 coverage and HDR10 support. And even though the Samsung Galaxy A80 has an AMOLED display, the Zenfone 6 looks more interesting. However, as said above, it lacks an in-display fingerprint reader.

Hardware/Software

The most performing smartphone of the trio is the Realme X2 Pro as it is one of the most powerful flagships out there sold at a midrange-class price. It is even equipped with up to 12 GB of RAM and a UFS 3.0 internal storage, that is simply amazing. The second place goes to the Asus Zenfone 6 fueled by the Snapdragon 855 chipset and up to 8 GB of RAM, while the Samsung Galaxy A80 is just an upper mid-ranger with its Snapdragon 730 processor, but it is still very fast and smooth.

Camera

The cameras found on the Asus Zenfone 6 are the most interesting not only because of the photo quality but also because of its flip-up mechanism allowing you to take photos from unusual angles. Further, the rear camera can also be used as a front camera. The Realme X2 Pro deserves a second place with its 64 MP quad camera which is more versatile for various kinds of scenarios, while the Samsung Galaxy A80 is not so exciting despite its rotating camera mechanism.

Battery

The presence of a huge 5000 mAh battery makes the Asus Zenfone 6 last a lot more than its rivals on a single charge, despite the IPS display. It even supports reverse charging so that it can be used as a power bank.

Price

You need just €399/$444 to grab a unit of the Realme X2 Pro in the base configuration with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. Asus Zenfone 6’s listing price starts from €499/$556, while Samsung Galaxy A80 actually costs about €450/$500. If you do not care so much about cameras and battery life (in that case Asus Zenfone 6 is a more correct choice), Realme X2 Pro wins this comparison due to its better display and performance, but it lacks an innovative design and high-end cameras.

The ZenFone 6 arrived with a notch-less display, top of the line specs, a massive 5000mAh battery, near-stock Android, and even a headphone jack. Not to mention its unique flip camera that transforms the rear-camera into a selfie shooter in order to give you a display with no notches or holes. All of this and it came in at only $500, which is frankly incredible.

ASUS is so confident about the phone, it has decided to release a special ‘Edition 30’ variant, coming with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It’s now available in the US for $900. Coupled with the same Snapdragon 855 and 5,000mAh battery from the standard edition, the 30-years-of-ASUS version is almost comparable to the company’s other hardware behemoth, the ROG Phone II, albeit with a more conventional design.

Speaking of the device’s design, it’s essentially unchanged from the typical Zenfone 6, though there are some small changes. The device sports a matte-black rear panel featuring a concentric circle design making it less slippery and glossy than the regular Zenfone 6. Towards the bottom, you’ll also find a 30th-anniversary logo.

Editor’s Pick: TWRP extends support for Asus Zenfone 6

ASUS also went the extra mile with the packaging, including a premium box along with an exclusive VIP card inside that entitles you to a 30-month warranty with prioritized repairs. You can check out an official image of the new packaging below, it’s pretty crazy how far they’ve gone polishing the presentation.

The Asus Zenfone 6 Edition 30 will set you back $900, about $300 more than the 8GB/256GB edition. Unfortunately, all the other variants are currently sold out, so the Edition 30 is your only option in the US. Also, keep in mind that the Zenfone 6 is GSM-only, so it will not work on Verizon, Sprint, or other CDMA carriers in the US.

The Zenfone 6 courts admiration for the well thought out design which ensures the dual rear cameras also double as the selfie shooters when the selfie camera is activated on the phone’s camera app.

The flip camera design is yet another clever way to trim bezels around the display. We have seen designs ranging from pop-up selfie cameras, slider design, punch-hole, notch design to even dual screens. Zack Nelson of the popular Youtube channel JerryRigEverything has given us a much-needed look at the internals of the Zenfone 6. If you think, the flip camera design is the only aspect where the device stands out, you are so mistaken.

The phone doesn’t have an IP rating as a result of the flip camera design but it is well sealed as was discovered during the dismantling. The glass back is held to the mid-frame with sticky glue and won’t go off easily, even when it is heated with a heat gun. The device comes with some wires and cables that can cut easily near the sides and that poses a risk to any attempt to open up the phone.

EDITOR’S PICK: Xiaomi India announces Mi Beard Trimmer, costs INR 1199 (~$17)

The flip camera is definitely the main attraction on the device. Since it is a dual camera setting, there are two camera cables that connect to the motherboard. The cables seem to be wrapped in a durable material but are also attached by non-standard connectors. Thus, they can’t be pulled out from the camera sensors as that would mark the end of the camera even though it won’t stop the phone from booting.

The device also comes with two motherboards that are separated by a thermal paste which could end up transferring heat between the two boards. The battery is also not held firmly by its adhesive as a little pry got it off. With this arrangement of the internals, the Zenfone 6 may be a difficult phone to repair but it is, no doubt, a beautiful phone to behold and handle.

The phone comes with powerful internals and more features than what’s usually found on higher-end flagships. But the flip camera, without a doubt, is its biggest attraction. However, flip cameras aren’t always durable, which is why it’s important to see whether the Zenfone 6 is built to last. That’s exactly what JerryRigEverything checked in his recent video.

JerryRigEverything confirms that the Zenfone 6 has an all-metal design. This is why the phone passed his bend test pretty easily. It didn’t even flex a bit in the bend test which was a very good sign. Also, the Zenfone 6 passed the standard scratch and burn tests comfortably. So, no real issues in these departments.

However, the real test was always going to be the phone’s flip camera. JerryRigEverything tried to twist the camera setup, stop it in between retraction, scratch it, and even banged it on the desk a couple of times. None of these actions seemed to have affected the phone’s camera setup. However, it is worth noting that the motor that drives the flip camera isn’t very powerful, so you can easily stop it mid-way with your hand or any other object. You’ll soon get a notification that the camera setup is obstructed and it goes away once you allow it to move freely.

Editor’s Pick: Xiaomi to announce new smartphone series in partnership with Meitu tomorrow

Just like the OnePlus 7 Pro, Asus Zenfone 6’s flip camera will retract automatically in case of accidental drops. The retraction process is much faster in such a scenario ensuring that the camera is pushed back into its housing before it hits the ground. It is indeed a very useful feature to ensure minimum damage to the camera setup.

Unfortunately, with a flip camera, the Zenfone 6 isn’t waterproof. So, make sure to keep the phone away from water at all costs.

Overall, it looks like Asus has made a solid flagship once again. So, cast away your worries as the Zenfone 6 is built to last.

The company is now all set to launch the Asus Zenfone 6 in India and ahead of the launch, Asus is now entangled in some legal issues. The Delhi High Court has ruled that Asus has infringed on an existing trademark for the word Zen, which belongs to Telecare Network.

Telecare Network India Pvt Ltd, which claims to own the trademarks for Zen and Zen Mobiles had filed the case against Asus. The company sells feature phones as well as entry-level smartphones under this brand name and has claimed that the use of a similar branding by a competitor is damaging.

The Delhi High Court found these claims reasonable and restrained Taiwan-based Asus from selling any smartphone, tablet, or accessory with the ZenFone branding starting eight weeks after May 28th, i.e. July 23rd.

Telecare also claims that Asus used the Zen name to “ride upon its goodwill” when the company entered the Indian market back in the year 2014. On the other hand, Asus says that the word “zen” is common and has its roots in Buddhism.

However, Asus has appealed this decision and the next hearing is scheduled to take place on 10th July. So, either the company needs to win the next hearing or needs to change the branding for its smartphones in India.

As said, this comes just ahead of the launch of the Zenfone 6 smartphone in India, which is expected to take place on 16th June. It remains to be seen if this legal issue will impact the launch scheduled of the company’s flagship smartphone in one of the world’s biggest smartphones market.

The latter is one of the most affordable real flagships out there and it may become one of the best-sellers of this year. But it has a lot of competition in the top-end segment: is it worth choosing it or other flagships such as Asus Zenfone 6 and OnePlus 7 Pro are better options? this comparison will give you an idea.

Design

Do not ask us for an opinion about the aesthetics of these devices: just choose what is better for your tastes. In each case, you will get a premium and beautiful design, even though I like Redmi K20 Pro and OnePlus 7 Pro more than the Asus Zenfone 6, despite the latter comes with a very useful rotating camera. Note that despite Asus Zenfone 6 comes with the same display size, Redmi K20 Pro has smaller dimensions, so it fits better in your pocket or your hand. OnePlus 7 Pro is even bigger than Asus Zenfone 6 due to its bigger display.

Display

As mentioned above, OnePlus 7 Pro comes with a bigger display which is more comfortable for multimedia and productivity; but this is not its only advantage. Its display is even one of the best panels out there, with a higher Quad HD+ resolution, a 90 Hz refresh ratio and the HDR10+ certification. It shows more realistic colors, it provides a smoother gaming and user experience, and even a higher level of detail. Even Redmi K20 Pro and Asus Zenfone 6 are equipped with wonderful panels, but OnePlus 7 Pro is the superior one and its display can be compared to the best Samsung’s ones.

Hardware/Software

Among the key feature of all of these devices, there are blazing speeds and performances. They are all powered by the amazing Snapdragon 855 chipset by Qualcomm, and you could not expect a better chipset in 2019. Despite coming with the same processor, OnePlus 7 Pro wins the hardware comparison because, in its most expensive configuration, it comes with up to 12 GB of RAM. With Asus Zenfone 6 and Redmi K20 Pro, you can get max 8 GB of RAM. On the other hand, Asus Zenfone 6 features a micro SD slot which accepts micro SD cards up to 1 TB, while OnePlus 7 Pro and Redmi K20 Pro do not have expandable storage. In each case, you get Android 9 Pie out of the box.

Camera

OnePlus 7 Pro wins the camera comparison for having the most complete and versatile camera department. It comes with a triple camera including an ultrawide lens and a telephoto lens with 3x zoom. It even has OIS, unlike its rivals, as well as the brightest focal aperture. But Asus Zenfone 6 is still an amazing camera phone thanks to its rotating camera: it shoots the best selfies and the rotating rear camera makes clicking photos much more comfortable as you can move the camera upwards or downwards without moving the phone. Even Redmi K20 Pro comes with an awesome camera and it is the only one able to record super slow motion videos at 960 fps.

Battery

There is no challenge: Asus Zenfone 6 wins the battery comparison as it comes with a way bigger 5000 mAh unit. And it even supports reverse charging (it can be used as a power bank).

Price

Redmi K20 Pro starts from just €350/$390 in the Chinese market, Asus Zenfone 6 costs €500/$557, and OnePlus 7 Pro starts from €700/$780. OnePlus 7 Pro wins the comparison thanks to its better display, amazing cameras, higher-end memory configuration. I like the Asus Zenfone 6 more than the Redmi K20 Pro, but Redmi K20 Pro wins the value for money comparison for its incredibly affordable price tag.

It also adds support for volume key controls in the camera app, allowing users to control the flip camera’s rotation, zoom, or capture a photo. You can pick the preference in the Asus Camera settings. The smart key can be used as a shutter to take pictures when you’re in Camera mode too.

The update has also improved the camera rotation stability, translation strings in Settings have been optimized, the default wallpaper and ringtone have been updated, and VoLTE/VoWiFi have been enabled for Taiwanese carriers.

Asus is rolling out this update to different serial numbers in batches and thus, this is going to be a slow rollout. So, it may take a few more days before the update reaches all the Zenfone 6 units.

Coming to the specifications, the Asus Zenfone 6 features a 6.4-inch Nano Edge IPS LCD with a 92% screen-to-body ratio and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor and is paired with 6GB/8GB of RAM with 64GB/128GB/256GB of UFS 2.1 storage.

It comes with a “Flip Camera” which when lifted up, serves as the front-facing camera. It consists of a 48 MP Sony IMX586 f/1.79 1.6µm primary camera and a 13 MP 125° ultra-wide angle camera sensor.

The phone features stereo speakers, a 3.5mm audio jack, dual-frequency GPS, NFC, Wi-FI a/b/g/n/ac/ax, Bluetooth 5.0, and a fingerprint scanner on its Gorilla Glass protected back. But the Honor 20 is not the only affordable flagship launched in 2019. Asus Zenfone 6 and OnePlus 7 will be one of its most aggressive competitors: both were launched in May just like the Honor 20, and all these devices are available in the same price range. With this comparison, we will try to make you understand which one offers the highest value for money, at least according to your needs.

Design

Aesthetically, I define Honor 20 and Asus Zenfone 6 better because of their original form factor. The former eliminates the bezels around the display and the notch thanks to a punch-hole screen which embeds a front camera. The latter is even more innovative with its rotating main cameras which can also be used as selfie cameras. Thanks to this solution, the screen-to-body ratio of the Asus Zenfone 6 is very high and there is a full screen display even without a notch. The phone also comes with an outstanding build quality thanks to its Gorilla Glass display and back cover. I personally prefer the Asus Zenfone 6, but some may like the Honor 20 due to its more attractive glass back and its very compact dimensions compared to its rivals.

Display

Despite having a traditional IPS display instead of an AMOLED panel like most of the actual flagships, the Asus Zenfone 6 is still able to deliver the best viewing experience. The panel has very realistic colors and it supports both the HDR10 technology and 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage. OnePlus 7 has an AMOLED display, but it can not provide the same color accuracy. On the other hand, it offers an in-display fingerprint reader. Given that Honor 20 is equipped with a midrange-class IPS panel which is also smaller and less comfortable for advanced users, Asus Zenfone 6 wins the display comparison.

Hardware/Software

Asus Zenfone 6 and OnePlus 7 come with exactly the same hardware department composed of a Snapdragon 855 chipset by Qualcomm, up to 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of internal storage. But despite both are among the fastest flagships and they have the same components, the OnePlus 7 will likely be faster due to its better software optimization and a user interface close to stock Android. But we still did not test the Asus Zenfone 6, so it is too early for a definitive verdict. Also note that the Asus Zenfone 6 has expandable storage (up to 1 TB), while OnePlus 7’s storage is not expandable.

Camera

At least judging from the specs on the paper, Honor 20 has a more complete and versatile camera side which should click more interesting photos than Asus Zenfone 6 and OnePlus 7. On the rear side, it boasts a quad camera setup composed of a main 48 MP sensor, a 16 MP ultrawide lens, a dedicated macro camera and even a depth sensor. On the front, you get an amazing 32 MP selfie camera.

Battery

If we consider all the real last-generation flagships, Asus Zenfone 6 is the one with the longest battery life. Thanks to a huge 5000 mAh battery, it can always last two days. OnePlus 7 and Honor 20 should come with just marginal differences in battery life.

Price

Both Honor 20 and Asus Zenfone 6 are priced just €500/$555 in their base variants, while OnePlus 7 starts from €550/$611. Overall, I personally define the Asus Zenfone 6 a more interesting device due to its amazing display, its huge battery, innovative design, and stereo speakers.

Design

Asus Zenfone 6 deserves an award just for its incredibly innovative form factor. Its display is almost completely bezel-less and it does not have a notch, thanks to the presence of a rotating camera setup on its rear side. It even comes with an astonishing build quality thanks to the glass back protected by Gorilla Glass 6, its aluminum 6000 series frame and its rotating camera tested with up to 100,000 flips, that is equivalent to 28 selfies a day for five years. On the other hand, it is still worth noting that Xiaomi Mi 9 and Lenovo Z6 Pro come with very elegant and premium aesthetics. Between Xiaomi Mi 9 and Lenovo Z6 Pro, the former has a better build quality as it is made with stronger materials.

Display

Asus Zenfone 6 is equipped with a panel which shows very realistic colors as it has a 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage and the HDR10 technology. But it is just an IPS panel, so you do not get the same deep blacks and vivid colors you can get with the Xiaomi Mi 9 or the Lenovo Z6 Pro. I personally prefer these two handsets because of their AMOLED panels but also because they have an in-display fingerprint reader which is much more comfortable than the traditional rear scanner found on the Zenfone 6.

Hardware/Software

Given that all of these devices are powered by the amazing Snapdragon 855 chipset which is currently the best SoC by Qualcomm, in each case you get incredibly fast performances in every scenario. But there is still a winner in terms of hardware: the Lenovo Z6 Pro. In its most advanced variant, it boasts 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage, that is the most powerful memory configuration ever found on an affordable flagship phone. All these three phones are based on Android 9 Pie but only Mi 9 and Z6 Pro have a custom user interface installed. Both the Asus Zenfone 6 and the Lenovo Z6 Pro feature a micro SD slot which allows expanding the internal storage, while Xiaomi Mi 9 does not.

Camera

The most complete and versatile rear camera department belongs to the Xiaomi Mi 9. It has a total of three sensors with a main 48 MP lens, an ultrawide secondary sensor and a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. Unlike its rivals, it can record super slow motion videos at 960 fps with a 1080p resolution, and it boasts very accurate laser autofocus. Asus Zenfone 6 does not have a front camera, but you can use the main cameras as selfie cameras thanks to the rotating mechanism. The most convincing front camera belongs to the Lenovo Z6 Pro with a 32 MP resolution.

Battery

Asus is basing most of its marketing efforts for the Zenfone 6 on the rotating cameras and the huge battery. With a high 5000 mAh, there is no affordable flagship which can beat the Zenfone 6 when it comes to battery life. And with its reverse charging technology, it can even double as a power bank. The second place goes to the Lenovo Z6 Pro with its 4000 mAh battery which is still able to last two days with moderate use, despite it can not reach three days unlike the Zenfone 6. Xiaomi Mi 9 has the smallest battery and it is just an average unit, but it is the only to feature a wireless charging technology. And we are talking about fast wireless charging with a power of 20W: Asus Zenfone 6 and Lenovo Z6 Pro can only be charged via cable with a max power of 18W!

Price

The Lenovo Z6 Pro was launched in China with a starting price of just €400/$445 for the base 6/128 GB variant, Xiaomi Mi 9 starts from €450/$500 globally in the 6/64 GB version, and Asus Zenfone 6 starts from €500/$560 in the 6/128 GB configuration. Overall, Asus Zenfone 6 is making a big difference with its bigger battery, stereo speakers, reverse wireless charging and very innovative design, despite it lacks an AMOLED display and a UD fingerprint scanner.

The Taiwanese tech giant is billed to release the Zenfone 6 series on May 16 and the flagship will be coming with a somewhat new design in the sense that it is entirely different from the previous Zenfone models. The design of the Zenfone 6 has now been laid bare in a leaked YouTube video that shows the phone from all angles.

This isn’t the first time the Zenfone 6 design is appearing online. Earlier on, a tipster from India had shared a number of photos of the Zenfone 6 showcasing the design features. Most spectacular is the slider design which the device will pack. The Zenfone 6 won’t be coming with a notch design but will use a slider design. Interestingly, the slider will slide in two directions (double slider). Sliding the phone upwards opens up a stereo speaker setup while sliding downwards open up the selfie camera. The selfie camera seems to have two flashlights at the top left and right ends of the phone.

At the bottom edge, the phone packs a USB-C port as well as a 3.5mmm audio jack. At the back, the device packs a dual camera setup stacked horizontally at the middle with an LED flash sitting in between the two sensors. Under the camera is the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor with a somewhat awkward shape.

Now ahead of the phone’s official launch, its pricing information for the home market, i.e. Taiwan has been leaked online.

According to the report, the Asus Zenfone 6 will come in three variants — 6GB RAM + 128GB storage, 8GB RAM + 256GB storage, and 12GB RAM + 512GB storage. All three models will be priced at 19,990 NTD (~$647), 23,990 NTD (approximately $776), and 29,990 NTD (approx. $970) respectively.

The teaser image released by the company shows that the Asus Zenfone 6 will be featuring a notch-less display. However, it remains to be seen whether the smartphone comes equipped with pop-up selfie camera.

The teaser actually shows the outline of the front design of the phone and reveals the presence of an earpiece at the center of the top edge of the device. This also hints that it could be featuring a waterdrop-style notch display.

Along with the Zenfone 6, the company is also expected to launch the Zenfone 6Z premium smartphone at the same event. The rumored ZenFone 6Z has a model number of ASUS_I01WD and its display carries support for Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels.

Although no official invitation has been sent out neither has the company released an official teaser to that effect, a newspaper ad containing the launch details was spotted recently

The advert was spotted inside the magazine that comes with the press passes for the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 holding in Barcelona, Spain. The ad has the caption “Defy Ordinary” which perhaps refers to the design. The ad also teases the design, quite vaguely but enough to suggest that the device may ditch the notch design for a notch-less design which could see it abandoning the selfie camera. Recently leaked live photos of the Zenfone 6 seem to confirm this. Such design will see the Zenfone 6 come with ultra-thin bezels.

The Zenfone 6 has featured in a couple of leaks in the past, including renders showing the front and back. The device is expected to pack a triple-rear camera setup but we are not so sure about that. We expect more details on the specs and design to emerge in the coming days before the May 14 launch date.
