Design

If you decide to buy one of these devices, do not expect a flagship-class design. Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 both come with a full metal unibody design, while Huawei Y9 (2019) is equipped with a more attractive multi-layer plastic back which seems glass. And it also has a higher screen-to-body ratio. That is why if you want the best design you should go for the Huawei Y9 (2019). But remember that it has bigger dimensions.

Display

With narrower bezels and a higher screen size, Huawei Y9 (2019) has the most comfortable display. But the quality is more or less the same as its opponents, more than sufficient but nothing spectacular. It offers a Full HD+ resolution just like Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, so it has more or less the same level of detail.

Specs & Software

Talking about hardware and performance, Huawei Y9 (2019) is the winner once again. Its chipset makes the difference as it is the new 12 nm Kirin 710, paired with up to 6 GB of RAM. On the other hand, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro offer a lower energy consumption with their Snapdragon 636.

Camera

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro has the most outstanding camera department, even though it is not a high-end camera phone. It has a total of four cameras: two on the front and two on the back, with bright apertures and high resolutions. It is very good to capture depth info but it is not recommended for shots in low light conditions.

Battery

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 is an outsider when it comes to the battery life, and it is able to last much longer on a single charge thanks to its 5000 mAh unit. It is not only the winner in this trio but also one of the phones with the highest battery life. But its opponents are still excellent with their 4000 mAh batteries.

Price

I would personally pick Huawei Y9 (2019) because of its better aesthetics, bigger display, and great performance, but it costs a bit more. It was launched with a price tag of €220, while Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro cost €160 and €190, respectively.

Amidst rumours regarding the Zenfone Max M2 Pro and Max M2, which recently received EEC certification in Russia, the company has now revealed its plans for the Zenfone Max Pro M1 update. Dinesh Sharma, Director, Mobile Business, Asus India, has confirmed that the phone will get Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) feature through software update.

Further, he has also confirmed that the Zenfone Max Pro M1 will soon receive the latest Android 9.0 Pie update. The company’s flagship smartphone Zenfone 5Z will also receive the Android Pie update. However, Asus has not revealed any specific timeline for the update.

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 features a 5.99-inch Full View Full HD+ display with 2160 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. The device is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 636 processor and comes in three variants — 3GB RAM with 32GB storage, 4GB RAM with 64GB storage, and 6GB RAM with 64GB internal storage.

It also supports microSD card, enabling users to further expand the phone’s storage capacity. In terms of photography, the ZenFone Max Pro M1 features a vertically arranged dual camera setup equipped with Softlight LED on its rear panel. It runs a pure version of Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box but the device is not a part of Google‘s Android One program.

Design

These devices are not the best ones in terms of design as they have a classic full metal unibody design without a flagship-like glass back. If I would have to make a choice, I would pick Motorola One Power due to its higher screen-to-body ratio. Thanks to the notch, the device has a tri-borderless design with just a thicker chin on which you can read the Motorola branding. The other two phones have an 18:9 display and thicker bezels on both the upper and the lower part. Further, Motorola One Power is splashproof, so it is also more interesting for its build quality.

Display

When it comes to display, Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is the most interesting device. The reason is simple: it is one of the phones with the world’s biggest displays. With a size of 6.9 inches, this device is very close to a tablet and it offers a great user experience in productivity and reading. Viewing quality is not so different in each handset, they all pack a midrange-class LCD panel, so do not expect great surprises.

Specs & Software

Same hardware side for each handset, with the Snapdragon 635 chipset and up to 6 GB of RAM depending on the chosen variant. But there is an important difference in the software: as the name suggests, Motorola One Power is powered by Android One, a stock version of Google’s operating system focused on performance and updates, with no customizations. With this device, you would get great performance as well as faster and constant updates for years. So it wins this section of the comparison.

Camera

Unfortunately, we still can not test the camera performance of Motorola One Power as it was launched yesterday. But one thing is sure after reading the specs on the paper: Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 is not at the level of its opponent. Even though we did not test it, on the paper Motorola One Power has the best camera department.

Battery

As mentioned above, the battery is the strongest point of each of these handsets. While the first twos feature a monster 5000 mAh unit, the third has an even bigger 5500 mAh (but note that it also has way bigger dimensions). They can all provide up to two days of battery life with a stressed use, but we believe that Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has the longest battery life.

Price

The price of Motorola One Power starts from just $218, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 was launched for a starting price of $217 and Xiaomi Mi Max carried a launch price tag of $250 in the base configuration. Motorola One Power wins the comparison with its design, Android One support and better camera, but if you like phablets and comfortable phones, go for the Xiaomi Mi Max 3.

The phone went on sale in India in May in two variants — 3GB RAM and 4GB RAM. At the Asus Zenfone 5Z launch event in India, Asus announced that the 6GB RAM variant of the Zenfone Max Pro M1 will be available from this month.

Now, the company has officially revealed that the 6GB RAM variant of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 will be available for purchase in India from 26th July for Rs. 14,990 (approximately $218), exclusively through online marketplace Flipkart, similar to the other variants. The 6GB RAM variant’s entry is about a month late as Asus had slated its arrival in June.

The smartphone features a 5.99-inch Full View Full HD+ display with 2160 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and support for 85 percent NTSC color gamut, 450-nits brightness. It has a contrast ratio of 1500:1 and a screen aspect ratio of 18:9.

Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 636 processor along with 6GB RAM RAM. This variant comes with 64GB of internal storage and also supports microSD card, enabling users to further expand the phone’s storage capacity.

In terms of photography, the ZenFone Max Pro M1 features a vertically arranged dual camera setup equipped with Softlight LED on its rear panel. It comprises a 16-megapixel primary sensor with f/2.0 aperture and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor with f/2.4 aperture for depth sensing.

The features offered by the dual rear cameras include faster autofocus, PDAF, and 4K video shooting. On the front side, there’s an 8-megapixel snapper with a Softlight LED, which has been optimized to capture selfie shots with bokeh effect.

While Asus smartphones usually feature the company’s custom interface ZenUI, the ZenFone Max Pro M1 is the first phone that offers stock Android experience. It runs a pure version of Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box but it is not a part of Google‘s Android One program.

Connectivity options on the device include Dual 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, and micro USB 2.0 port. There’s also a rear-mounted fingerprint reader for added security and the phone also supports Face Unlock feature.

It is powered by a high-density 5,000mAh battery that offers up to 199 hours of music playback, up to 25.3 hours of Full HD video playback, up to 28 hours of Wi-Fi browsing and up to 42 hours of 3G talk time. The battery also supports 10W fast charging and it takes 2.42 hours to charge it to the brim.

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 directly competes against Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. The pricing of the 6GB RAM model of the Redmi Note 5 Pro is Rs. 16,999, which is Rs. 2,000 more than the Zenfone Max Pro M1. Asus had a good chance to cash-in on Xiaomi’s struggle with maintaining stocks for the 6GB RAM model of Redmi Note 5 Pro but seems like Asus missed that bus.

According to a Taiwanese publication, the mid-ranger is going to be released in Taiwan starting from the end of July. The device should hit the Taiwanese market on July 24 or July 27. As we know, it has been announced in three variants which differ not only for the memory configurations but also for the camera department. But it is still unclear whether or not Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 will be launched in Taiwan in both its variants simultaneously.

There is a cheaper version with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage and two more expensive ones with 4 or 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. While the first and the second one have a rear dual camera with resolutions of 13 and 5 MP (f/2.2 and f/2.4 apertures respectively), the third one has a dual camera with 16 and 5 MP resolutions (f/2.0 and f/2.4 apertures, respectively). Further, only the third variant comes with a 16 MP front camera, while the others sport an 8 MP f/2.2 selfie snapper. All the versions feature a front-facing LED flash.

The 3/32 GB variant will probably sport a price tag of 6990 TWD (which roughly translates into $228), while the 6/64 GB version costs 8990 TWD (roughly $293). Anyways, the company is rumored to launch a special discount at least for the initial sales. Among the other main specs of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 there is a 5.99-inch display with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. Under the hood, there is an octa-core Snapdragon 636 chipset by Qualcomm running at a max frequency of 1.8 GHz, while the battery has a whopping capacity of 5000 mAh. Android 8.1 Oreo is installed out of the box.

The pre-orders have shown that the ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1 will be a very popular one and will be sold out pretty quickly. Perhaps, in a bid to ride on the shoulders of its popularity, ASUS has released the kernel source code and bootloader unlock tool for the device.

Thus, users can now download the kernel source code which would come in handy for the development of Custom ROM. Users can also now officially unlock the bootloader of the device but there is a caveat. Using the official bootloader unlock tool will void users’ warranty. However, the release of the official bootloader unlock tool signify that users can now flash generic system images (GSIs) of AOSP Android Oreo as well as LineageOS and ResurrectionRemix.

The ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1 is coming into a very competitive terrain, as it falls in the same lower mid-range segment as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro in terms of specifications, including the Snapdragon 636 chip. ASUS wisely priced the Zenfone Max Pro M1 lower than its contemporary and ships it with custom Android 8.1 Oreo instead of giving it the Zen UI skin. The release of the kernel source code is another wise move to ensure the device performs very well in the market. Apart from that, the device recently received its first major update which addded Face Unlock and April security patches. The update also brings optimization to the camera performance, battery life and more.

Both Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro have exactly the same display size and resolution, but at least on paper, the M1 has a slightly better display due to its 85% NTSC color gamut and 1500:1 contrast. When it comes to the hardware side, it is the same in both models, but Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 also features a micro SD dedicated slot which is not present on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro: so you can use the dual SIM slot and the micro SD at the same time. While Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a customized UI (MIUI 9), Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 offers a stock Android experience (based on 8.1 Oreo), unlike all other Zenfones. Cameras have similar specs, but even though we did not test Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, we believe Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro should shoot slightly better photos.

On the opposite side, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has a bigger battery with a huge capacity of 5000 mAh. Not only will Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 last longer than its opponent on a single charge, but it may also be the phone with the longest battery life among devices from mainstream brands.

The launch price of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 in China is about $165/€134 for the 3/32 GB version, $195/€159 for the 4/64 GB configuration and $225/€183 for the 6/64 GB variant. Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro has been introduced in the Chinese market with a price tag of about $218/€177 for the 4/64 GB version and $265/€216 for the 6/64 GB configuration. On paper, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 wins this comparison with its monster battery making the big difference along with a pure Android experience.

So, which one would you pick?
