ASUS has released some significant phones this year; undoubtedly the Taiwanese producer has been able to make it to the front paper of the news headlines. One of the newly released from Asus is the ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M2 which is an upgraded version of the Zenfone Max Pro M1. From the latest news,  the M1 successor has received the newly rolled out Firmware Over the Air (FOTA) update.

The version of this model is the IN-15.2016.1811.177. There was a release of  new update days after the company rolled out a new update for its Zenfone Max Pro M1 and Zenfone 5. This is the first update the device is getting after it launch two weeks back in India.

The company has however, stated that the new package update will come with better camera effect optimization along with updated audio performance, upgraded fingerprint sensor. Also the upgraded touch firmware is an improved step towards making it more accurate and fast, thereby resolving any glitches that must have been found. The update has also improved the display edge on this device. Lastly, there has been an update on the Google security patch from October Security patch to November.

It’s assured that Asus will roll out this update in batches; invariably the update will be released to a minimal number of users before it get to others, so as to avoid system bugs associated with updates. Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, the budget mid-range offering from the Taiwan-based company has been well-received in India, making its mark in the country’s mid-range segment. Now, the company is all set to launch its successor today.

While the company is launching the Zenfone Max Pro M2, Asus has also revealed that the Zenfone Max Pro M1 will receive the latest Android Pie update early next year, by the end of February 2019, along with the Zenfone Max M1.

Notably, the phone comes with Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box and runs the stock version without any custom user interface. However, the phone is not a part of the Android One program from Google.

The report says that the company is currently testing the Android Pie update internally. Also, the Zenfone 5Z, another mid-range smartphone from the company, is slated to receive the Android 9 Pie updated by the end of January 2019.

Asus’ Zenfone Max Pro M1 has proved to be one of the bestselling budget smartphone in the Indian market’s sub-Rs. 15,000 (~$203) segment. Recently, the company revealed that it managed to sell over one million units of the phone in just six months.

ASUS has announced that it has recorded a milestone in the sales of its premium midrange Zenfone Max Pro M1 in India. The phone which was launched in India in April has now had 1 million units sold. That is an impressive feat for a company that is struggling to get its own share of the smartphone market globally. The phone is sold exclusively on Flipkart.

Apart from having a cool design, ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1 has as its main selling point, an affordable pricing. The phone comes with a starting price of Rs. 10,999 ($148) in India for the variant with 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant. As mentioned above, the battery is the strongest point of each of these handsets. While the first twos feature a monster 5000 mAh unit, the third has an even bigger 5500 mAh (but note that it also has way bigger dimensions). They can all provide up to two days of battery life with a stressed use, but we believe that Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has the longest battery life.

Price

The price of Motorola One Power starts from just $218, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 was launched for a starting price of $217 and Xiaomi Mi Max carried a launch price tag of $250 in the base configuration. The “Redmi Note 5 Pro killer” Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 was expected to be released in the homeland of the known smartphone and PC manufacturer in mid-June, but it did not happen. According to a Taiwanese publication, the mid-ranger is going to be released in Taiwan starting from the end of July. The device should hit the Taiwanese market on July 24 or July 27. As we know, it has been announced in three variants which differ not only for the memory configurations but also for the camera department. But it is still unclear whether or not Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 will be launched in Taiwan in both its variants simultaneously.

There is a cheaper version with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage and two more expensive ones with 4 or 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. While the first and the second one have a rear dual camera with resolutions of 13 and 5 MP (f/2.2 and f/2.4 apertures respectively), the third one has a dual camera with 16 and 5 MP resolutions (f/2.0 and f/2.4 apertures, respectively). Further, only the third variant comes with a 16 MP front camera, while the others sport an 8 MP f/2.2 selfie snapper. All the versions feature a front-facing LED flash.

The 3/32 GB variant will probably sport a price tag of 6990 TWD (which roughly translates into $228), while the 6/64 GB version costs 8990 TWD (roughly $293). Anyways, the company is rumored to launch a special discount at least for the initial sales. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 636 processor out of the box. The 6GB RAM variant comes with 64GB of internal storage and also supports microSD card for expanding the phone’s storage capacity.

In terms of photography, the ZenFone Max Pro M1 features a vertically arranged dual camera setup equipped with Softlight LED on its rear panel. It comprises a 13-megapixel primary sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor for depth sensing. The features offered by the dual rear cameras include faster autofocus, PDAF, and 4K video shooting. On the front side, it has an 8-megapixel snapper with a Softlight LED, which has been optimized to capture selfie shots with bokeh effect.

While Asus smartphones usually feature ZenUI, but the ZenFone Max Pro M1 is the first phone that offers stock Android experience. It runs a pure version of Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box but it is not a part of Google‘s Android One program. Connectivity options on the device include Dual 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, and micro USB 2.0 port. There’s also a rear-mounted fingerprint reader for added security and the phone also supports Face Unlock feature.

It is powered by a high-density 5,000mAh battery that offers up to 199 hours of music playback, up to 25.3 hours of Full HD video playback, up to 28 hours of Wi-Fi browsing and up to 42 hours of 3G talk time. The battery also supports 10W fast charging and it takes 2.42 hours to charge it to the brim.

Asus has released a new update for its popular mid-range smartphone Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1. The new firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) update for the smartphone is the second such update rolled out by the company since the launch of the phone.

Previously, the company had released a firmware update for the smartphone right after its launch, which introduced the Face Unlock feature, as promised by the company during the phone’s launch.

The latest update brings in new features, including VoLTE support for Vodafone, Idea Cellular and Bharti Airtel. It also brings May security patch for Android along with few bug fixes. The update also improves the response time of the fingerprint sensor as well as the performance of the front-facing camera but the company has not revealed what specifically has been improved.

If you haven’t received the update notification yet, you can manually check if the update is available for your smartphone by going into Settings > System > System update.

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 is the competitor to Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 Pro and is also the first device from the company to launch as part of a new strategic partnership with online retailer Flipkart.

The smartphone is available at a starting price of Rs. 10,999 for 3GB RAM with 32GB storage and goes up to Rs 12,999 for 4GB RAM with 64GB storage. Another variant with 6GB RAM has been announced for Rs. 14,999 but it is yet to go on sale in India. The device is available in two color options – Meteor Silver and Deepsea Black.

It features a 5.99-inch Full HD+ IPS display with screen resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels and 18:9 aspect ratio, with 83 percent screen-to-body ratio and 403 PPI pixel density. Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 636 processor.

ASUS unveiled the Zenfone Max Pro M1 on April 23 in India but the device only went up for pre-orders on May 3 and will be available for purchase on May 10. The pre-orders have shown that the ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1 will be a very popular one and will be sold out pretty quickly. Perhaps, in a bid to ride on the shoulders of its popularity, ASUS has released the kernel source code and bootloader unlock tool for the device.  

Thus, users can now download the kernel source code which would come in handy for the development of Custom ROM. Users can also now officially unlock the bootloader of the device but there is a caveat. Using the official bootloader unlock tool will void users’ warranty. However, the release of the official bootloader unlock tool signify that users can now flash generic system images (GSIs) of AOSP Android Oreo as well as LineageOS and ResurrectionRemix.

The ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1 is coming into a very competitive terrain, as it falls in the same lower mid-range segment as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro in terms of specifications, including the Snapdragon 636 chip. ASUS wisely priced the Zenfone Max Pro M1 lower than its contemporary and ships it with custom Android 8.1 Oreo instead of giving it the Zen UI skin. The release of the kernel source code is another wise move to ensure the device performs very well in the market.
