Backbone, in collaboration with Xbox, has released the Backbone One: Xbox Edition, a mobile controller designed to turn smartphones into portable Xbox consoles. Launched on March 27, 2025, the device is priced at $109.99 and is available exclusively through Backbone.com (with global shipping) and Best Buy. Stock is limited. The Xbox Edition is $10 more than the standard and PlayStation editions and is aimed at Xbox users who want mobile access to console-style gaming.

Backbone One: Xbox Edition features

The controller features Xbox’s signature translucent green design with ergonomic grips, precision thumbsticks, and tactile buttons. It includes a dedicated Xbox button: a single press opens the Xbox guide or library, a double press captures gameplay, and holding it triggers secondary in-game functions.

The device comes with a one-month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate trial for new members, giving access to titles like Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 through Xbox Cloud Gaming. It also supports Xbox Remote Play, allowing users to stream directly from their console. Setup is simple—connect the controller, open the Xbox app, and select a console.

The Backbone App also works with Apple Arcade, Steam Link, and other controller-compatible mobile games, expanding access to a wide range of titles across platforms. The Android version of Backbone One finally goes on sale today.

The Backbone One now works with Android phones

The Backbone One went on sale to be compatible with iPhones in July, but now it’s available for Android phones. Starting today, you can order the Backbone One for Android from the company’s website or some selected retailers for $99.99. Gamepad connects to your phone via a USB-C connection (unlike some controllers that require a Bluetooth connection), and its size can be adjustable. The gamepad also offers a headphone jack, like its iOS version.

The Backbone One is compatible with “most” Android phones, but you’ll probably need to remove your phone from its case to make sure it fits. Thanks to the asymmetrical stick and standard A, B, X and Y button layout, it’s very similar to the Xbox’s controller. Especially if you are into Cloud gaming, you will not have any difficulty playing PC games. As you know, the iOS version of the controller also has a PlayStation-compatible model.

The version with the button system (cross, circle, triangle and square) similar to the DualShock was developed for those using the PlayStation Remote Play feature. Unfortunately, the PlayStation version of the controller for Android phones isn’t listed yet. Still, Backbone has an exclusive partnership agreement with Sony, and a USB-C powered PlayStation variant is currently developing; however, the launch date is currently unknown.

Sony has just launched a new gaming product in the market, but its meant to be paired with the Apple iPhone. Rather than launching a separate service altogether, the company has made a new controller that allows users to play PlayStation games on their iPhones.

The Japanese tech giant has just launched the new Backbone One, which is a PlayStation Edition controller that is only available for Apple iPhone owners. So, Android users will have to skip this controller attachment for now. This controller works just like a standalone game streaming service as it requires a robust internet connection. Apart from this, one will also need at least a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 series console models as well.

One just has to plug in their iPhone into the Backbone One controller and use the PlayStation Remote Play app to gain access to their PS4 and PS5 games directly from their smartphones. The good news doesn’t end here as Sony has also confirmed that this controller will also work with other App Store games as well as other game streaming services that support controllers. This includes the likes of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Genshin Impact, Fantasian, Call of Duty: Mobile, and more.

Notably, the controller does not require separate charging as it is powered directly through the iPhone itself. Sony will sell the Bankbone One PlayStation Edition controller that will be available for purchase in the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands, and the UK at launch. Interestingly, an Android version of this controller is expected to launch later in November and will also cost 100 US Dollars like the iPhone controller.
