Baidu is back with another AI announcement, and this time they’re really swinging for the fences. The Chinese tech giant just rolled out Ernie X1.1, which they’re calling a major upgrade to their previous Ernie X1 model.

What’s New Under the Hood?

Wang Haifeng, Baidu’s Chief Technology Officer, presented the new model as something special. Built on their Ernie 4.5 foundation, X1.1 uses what they call a “hybrid reinforcement learning framework”, basically combining different AI training techniques to make the model smarter.

The technical details might sound dry, but the results Baidu is claiming are pretty impressive. They say X1.1 is significantly better than its predecessor:

• 34.8% more accurate with facts
• 12.5% better at following instructions
• 9.6% improvement in handling complex tasks

The Big Claims

Here’s where things get interesting (and a bit bold). Baidu isn’t just comparing their new model to their own previous work; they’re taking shots at the competition. They claim Ernie X1.1 outperforms DeepSeek’s R1-0528 model across multiple tests.

But wait, there’s more. They’re also saying their model can go toe-to-toe with some of the biggest names in AI, specifically mentioning performance comparable to GPT-5 and Google‘s Gemini 2.5 Pro in certain areas.

Where Can You Try It?

If you’re curious to test it out, Baidu has made X1.1 available through their usual channels – the Ernie Bot website and their Wenxiaoyan app. For businesses and developers, they’ve also deployed it on their Qianfan AI Cloud platform.

The Bigger Picture

This launch isn’t happening in isolation. Baidu also updated their PaddlePaddle deep learning framework to version 3.2, making it better for training large AI models and working with different types of hardware. They’ve been busy updating their development tools too.

The numbers they’re throwing around are pretty staggering – apparently, their AI ecosystem now supports over 23 million developers and serves 760,000 companies. That’s a massive user base, especially concentrated in China.

What This Really Means

Let’s be honest – every AI company is making big claims about their latest models these days. But Baidu’s push with X1.1 represents something important: the global AI race is heating up, and Chinese companies aren’t content to just follow along.

Whether Ernie X1.1 actually lives up to these bold comparisons with GPT-5 and Gemini remains to be seen. Independent testing and real-world use will be the real judge. But one thing’s for sure, Baidu is clearly positioning itself as a serious player on the global AI stage, not just in China.

The competition between AI giants is only getting more intense, and that’s probably good news for everyone who uses these tools.

Baidu’s Ernie Bot, a generative AI service, has made a resounding debut in China, garnering tremendous attention and downloads. However, it’s not all smooth sailing for this innovative technology.

Ernie Bot’s public debut was met with an overwhelming response, with over 313,610 downloads on Apple’s Chinese iOS store and a staggering 2.4 million downloads across various Android app stores on its first day of launch. Users flocked to test the capabilities of this AI service, resulting in a flood of questions, a staggering 33 million within the first 24 hours.

The Chinese government recently lifted restrictions on several generative AI services, including Ernie Bot, as part of its efforts to regulate the technology. Other approved services include AI specialist SenseTime, Baichuan, founded by Sogou’s Wang Xiaochuan, and state-backed Zhipu AI.

Ernie Bot’s instant popularity was undeniable, but it faced difficulties in responding to specific queries and occasionally provided answers that left users dissatisfied. Screenshots of conversations with the AI chatbot revealed instances where it either failed to respond or delivered biased answers.

One notable example was when users asked which of the founders of Baidu, Alibaba Group Holding, and Tencent Holdings could be considered “capitalist.” Ernie Bot pointed to the founders of Alibaba and Tencent but conspicuously excluded Baidu’s founder, Robin Li. This raised eyebrows, especially given the similar business practices of all three tech giants.

In another test, Ernie Bot struggled to answer the same question, generating a lengthy Wikipedia-style profile of the three businessmen and essentially avoiding a direct response, even when explicitly instructed to reply with a simple “yes” or “no.”

Despite these hiccups, Ernie Bot’s rapid adoption and the sheer volume of questions it received underline the curiosity and eagerness of Chinese users to explore generative AI services. The 33 million questions it fielded on its debut day attest to the immense interest in this technology.

The technology’s approval by the Chinese government is a significant step forward, following the enactment of comprehensive regulations on generative AI just two weeks prior. Ernie Bot, along with other approved services, is now poised to shape the future of AI interactions in China.

However, the challenges it faced in providing accurate and impartial responses highlight the complexities involved in developing AI systems that can navigate sensitive or politically charged topics. As China continues to embrace generative AI, striking the right balance between innovation and responsible AI use will be an ongoing concern.

The ChatGPT-like tool responded to more than 33.4 million user queries within the first day, according to data revealed by the company.

Ernie Bot is powered by Baidu’s own large language model, which has been trained on a massive dataset of text and code. This allows the bot to generate human-like text responses to a wide range of prompts and questions. For example, users can ask ERNIE Bot to write poems, translate languages, or even answer their questions about the world.

Baidu has filed a lawsuit against Apple Inc and other relevant app developers in the Beijing Haidian People’s Court. The Chinese search engine and technology giant has sued Apple Inc over fake Ernie Bot apps available on the Appstore. 

Baidu has made it very clear that the company has not opened the Ernie Bot for public usage and has not launched the Chatbot or any App related to the Chatbot. Moreover, the company has released a statement saying that until the company officially announces the launch of Ernie Bot, any application found online is fake. 

On Friday, the company made an official post on its WeChat Account ‘Baidu AI’. In the post, it said that “At present, Ernie does not have any official app,” and “Until our company’s official announcement, any Ernie app you see from App Store or other stores are fake,”

The company has also posted a copy of the court filing on WeChat for public scrutiny. 

Ernie Bot:

Under development since 2019, ‘ERNIE’ which stands for  ‘Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration’ is an AI chatbot service product created by Baidu. The chatbot is built upon the language model known as “Ernie 3.0-Titan”.

Ernie Bot’s functionality is currently limited to performing mathematical calculations, speaking in Chinese dialects, and generating videos and images based on text prompts. It is considered one of the closest rivals and competitors of Open AIs ChatGPT.

However, unlike ChatGPT, which became available to the public in November 2022, Ernie Bot is still in the development stage and has only been released to a select group of users with invitation codes. Corporate organizations can integrate the bot into their products through Baidu’s cloud platform.

Headquartered in Beijing’s Haidian District, Baidu, Inc. is a Chinese multinational technology company that specializes in internet-related products, services, and artificial intelligence. ChatGPT is the talk of the town and the Chinese stock market is in a frenzy over this new and advanced AI product. Though ChatGPT is off-limits to Chinese users, technology giants like Alibaba and Baidu are planning to launch rival solutions for Chinese consumers.

ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is an advanced Chatbot developed by the American AI company OpenAI. The chatbot which was initially made to mimic a human speaker, can do multiple functions like write and debug programs, compose music and poetry, write stories and essays, translate multiple languages, take tests, create and maintain entire chat rooms, play games, say jokes, and more. The chatbot, which was launched in November 2022, is the fastest-growing consumer app in history. 

What is the ChatGPT-related Stock Frenzy?

After the release of ChatGPT, the developing company OpenAI’s valuation rose to $29 billion. As ChatGPT became the new buzzword and the chatter around artificial intelligence increased, many AI companies saw a record-breaking rise in their share price. The software firm C3.ai Inc saw an 11% rise in its price, while the share price of analytics firm BigBear.ai jumped 21%. The conversation AI company SoundHound AI saw a record rise of almost 40% in its share price. 

Many Chinese technology and AI companies are also riding on the viral success of ChatGPT. Though China will never allow the chatbot openly into its network, many technology giants and startups have pledged to create alternative solutions and substitute technology that can provide services similar to ChatGPT. 

Shares of AI technology companies such as Hanwang Technology Co, TRS Information Technology Co, and Cloudwalk Technology Co saw a shocking rise in the past week. These companies are nowhere near releasing an app or software like ChatGPT. In fact, both Hanwang Technology Co which makes intelligent interaction products, and the facial recognition software developer Cloudwalk technology have reported losses in 2022. 

Warnings against AI stock speculation.

Cloudwalk technology cautioned its investors about the AI fervor and said that it has no collaborations or partnerships with OpenAI and has not developed or sold any products or services related to ChatGPT.  

Market experts are warning people from getting involved in the ongoing AI frenzy. Vey-Sern Ling, MD of Union Bancaire Privee said that the financial benefits of ChatGPT and related technology are still not clear. He further added that apart from companies with the strongest technical capabilities, the rest are probably just riding the wave and such hype-driven rallies are never sustainable.

Within a week, the price surge of AI stocks has stretched valuations and broken records. TRS Information Technology is trading sixty times its earnings, while Haitian Ruisheng Science Technology Ltd’s price-to-earnings ratio (PE) is more than 240 (the average PE of Nifty in the last 20 years was around 20)

Chinese regulators have started warning people against AI stocks. As per reports, last week, three tech companies were called in for inquiry by regulators after their shares rose by more than 30% within a week.  A prominent newspaper in China published a front-page warning Ad for investors and consumers, urging them to stay away from the ChatGPT frenzy. 

Retail investor Lu Deyong said that ChatGPT is just a hot idea but a great opportunity for retail investors, who prefer smaller stocks like these to make some quick money. He further added that though the ChatGPT frenzy is rallying the Chinese stock market, China is still not ready to realize such technology in the near future.

To date, no AI company in China has announced any product or service that can compete purely with ChatGPT. The closest competition, for now, seems to be from the Chinese search engine giant Baidu, which is planning to launch its AI chatbot the ‘Ernie Bot’ in March.
