Android 14 has apparently rolled out a new BatteryManager API on its latest iteration, which let’s you check your smartphone’s battery health. This function would also bring a number of other useful features and insights, so here are all the details.

Android 14 could add a phone battery health checking feature

The news arrives from Esper.io’s Mishaal Rahman who stated that the new APIs are built to offer useful information such as cycle count, charging status, manufacturing date, date of first use, charging policy, and most importantly, the state of battery health. As of right now, the new BatteryManager API is only available on Google’s Pixel smartphones that are running on Android 14 Beta 2 or higher.

Thanks to this API, developer @narektor created an open source battery health app called Batt. This let’s you provide users with battery health statistics. But keep in mind that the data of the battery health provided may not be completely accurate. Although, this does create a framework that implies that Google will eventually release a battery health tracking feature of its own that will likely be found in the Settings app.

Unfortunately, it is also likely that the company may skip the feature entirely on the upcoming Android 14 iteration and add it into Android 15. This feature has been highly requested by many for sometime now, so we can expect it to hit the live built sometime in the future. So stick around for more updates.

Recent statistics show that the current smartphone sales are going on a downtrend as of 2023, and one of the reasons why is that smartphone upgrades were not as attractive as they used to be. The research into how to solve the battery problem in smartphones, and indeed in several tech fields, has been an ongoing work. Researchers have been grappling with proffering sustainable solutions on how to produce longer-lasting batteries for smartphones, and there have been tremendous improvements to date. However, the issue persists, as most smartphone batteries, including flagship and premium models, lose their original capacities within a few years of use. Most smartphone batteries shed up to a fifth of their capacity within the first year of their use.

But it seems all that is about to change as researchers at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) have come up with a revolutionary material that helps batteries to retain their original capacity (up to 95%) for a minimum of five years, thereby extending the battery life inside the device be it a smartphone, laptop, or even electric vehicle. The implications of this discovery by Japanese scientists are quite extensive. The internal makeup of current batteries makes them degrade progressively after every charge, and it is reported that after up to 500 recharges, up to 40% of the battery’s capacity may have been lost due to the poor performance of the binder material inside the battery.

The scientists at JAIST, led by Professor Noriyoshi Matsumi, have discovered a binder material that proved to outperform the existing technology. The negative terminals of batteries in use today feature a binder material called Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) which does not have a superb performance. After just 500 recharges, typical batteries using PVDF lose up to 35% of the original capacity. This results in degraded battery life on smartphones after one or two years.

However, the new binder material is dubbed Bis-imino-acenaphthenequinone-Paraphenylene (BP). The binder made it possible to still retain 95% of battery capacity even after more than 1700 charge cycles. Thus, the battery remains efficient up to five years without significantly shedding its original capacity.

Matsumi says the new technology would come in helpful in the development of more durable products. It also has the potential to encourage consumers to purchase more expensive battery-based assets like electric vehicles, he opined.

We expect smartphone brands to pursue engagements with JAIST on partnerships that will lead to the deployment of the new battery technology in the production of more reliable and durable batteries for smartphones and other tech gadgets.

Earlier today (19th March 2021), the director of system software department of Xiaomi smartphones, Zhang Guoquan, shared the company’s plans on launching a new architecture that would enable the battery of the Redmi K30 Ultra to rise by 5 percent.

For those unaware, a large number of users of the high end Redmi K30 series model are complaining about the battery life of their devices. Thus, the Chinese tech giant seeks to address the issue with the new architecture that will arrive with the latest MIUI 12.5 build for the K30 series. On the Chinese microblogging website, the senior official of the company shared that the new architecture brought about a 5 percent improvement in terms of battery life, especially in terms of screen on times.

As per the executive, the K30 Ultra features a 120Hz refresh rate on its OLED panel, which tends to use more power when used in the high refresh rate mode.. So, the new changes brings a new display software architecture, which changes the image data flow from single pipeline to dual pipeline on the SoC. In other words, the display does not need increase the Vcore voltage, raising the power efficiency of the screen.

This would enable a battery life increase of 5 percent based on the new dual pipeline architecture. Simply put, the smartphone manufacturer made adjustments to the device in the latest MIUI build, which enabled them to improve the overall battery life.

Battery life in laptops used to be awful but things got better since hardware manufacturers released low-power components and high-density batteries that allowed for a bigger battery to fit into the same space. The Chuwi UBook Pro features a power-conservative Intel Core m3-8100Y CPU and despite the slim profile of the 2in1 laptop, it should have a great battery performance. But, does it? Let’s see in the battery life test of UBook Pro.

Office scene

The first test is a simulation of office work, based on web browsing and document editing. As the device is mostly addressed to office personnel and students, it is the most important of all. As seen in the video below, 30min of web browsing consume 7% of the battery and 30min of document editing consume 5%. This means that you can go on for about 7 hours on a full charge.

Entertainment scene

Moving on to media consumption and gaming, the device lost just 13% of charge after 45min of online music playback while another 45min of 4K video playback consumed just 20% thanks to the UHD Graphics 615 GPU that supports hardware 4K decoding. That means about 4 continuous hours of 4K video playback on a single charge.

During the gaming test, the Core m3-8100Y processor proved to be quite powerful providing smooth experience during League of Legends gaming. It is not the heaviest gaming on earth but on the other hand, UBook Pro isn’t a gaming laptop either. During gaming, the battery went down just 22% in 30min.

Conclusion

After the test, UBook Pro still had 33% of battery left. According to the power consumption ratio calculated in the bar chart, UBook Pro can last 10 hours of office software usage or web browsing for 7 hours for every single charge. Obviously, the 38wh battery will take you through the day without the need for a recharge. Nevertheless, it supports PD quick charging, which can quickly restore full power without worrying about low battery.

In the latest report from The Washington Post, it has appeared that the new smartphones have reduced the battery life upon their comparisons with the older counterparts. It is found that all the major manufacturer has reduced the lifespan of smartphone’s battery rather than Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9, iPhone XR and few other devices.

In a detailed battery life tests, The Washington Post journalist, Geoffrey A has found that the popular smartphones on both the iOS and Android ecosystem have witnessed an enormous decline in the battery life in comparison with their predecessors.

Geoffrey A conducted tests with the Google Pixel 3, Apple iPhone XS and Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and various other devices. He found that the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 Xl fares well in the battery life test rather than the Pixel 3 and 3XL. Similarly, Apple iPhone XS missed comparison with the iPhone X. The Cupertino giant managed to perform well with the iPhone XR.

The high-end devices such as iPhone XR and Galaxy Note 9 did best in tests and managed to top the chart. Overall, it is found that devices which are larger have better battery life. In the chart above, you can see that some devices did well than older phones.

As apparatus, Geoffrey A used a light meter to measure the brightness level and a script to navigate websites from top to bottom automatically. Finally, he measured the time for how long it took for each device to drain fully. The chart above will give you all the details of every device.

Well, it is quite interesting to know that manufacturers are deteriorating the battery life with every new launch. We hope from now on, OEMs start learning ways to increase the battery life rather than just stuffing more and more battery capacity to the device.

OnePlus 3 happens to be one of OnePlus‘ most successful smartphone, perhaps that explains why the company manufactured a OnePlus 3T variant of the same smartphone with some upgraded features in order to continue exploiting the success of the smartphone. OnePlus 3 comes with some spectacular features, one of which is the DASH Charge technology which it claims is superior to any other fast charging technology in the market.

Despite the DASH Charge, there is just a 3,000mAh battery onboard which fuels a 5.5-inch FHD display powered by a Snapdragon 820 processor, making it difficult to get much of the battery saved after charging. There is a custom Doze mode for battery saving but that only works when the smartphone is in sleep mode. It could help prolong your phone’s battery life consistently, getting you up to roughly 7 to 8 hours of screen-on time on the OnePlus flagship.

One good thing about these kernel tweaks is that it doesn’t alter your phone’s usage afterward and you can always revert it back to custom settings if you are not okay with it. All the regular usage features like radios, network location, sync on, visible screen brightness are not affected by the tweaks. Apart from that, the kernel tweaks can also work and smartphone having a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip inside it, not just OnePlus 3. But your phone must be rooted in order for these kernel tweaks to be applied.

The CEO of Huami Technology might have just revealed the company’s upcoming watch will run android wear while he was talking about the battery life.

In his post, Mr. Wang said he has used a number of smartwatches running android or android wear from big brands and battery life didn’t go beyond a day. He also mentioned that since the second generation Mi Band offers a 20-day battery life and he has gotten a 7-day battery life from other big name sports bracelets, he should be able to get a few days from the Huami watch.

Only to later post that the smartwatch will have a battery life of 2 days under normal use or close to 3 days but not more.

Apart from the battery life, the CEO also hinted at the Huami smartwatch possibly having a circular dial with touch support and also feature physical buttons.

Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 Review: DESIGN and DISPLAY

Let’s start by the design as the Galaxy A5 looks and feels like a flagship phone. It uses a quality metal frame around the device along with metal buttons, which are located on the left and right sides and they have excellent tactile feedback. Also, there is a single SIM card slot and the microSD card slot for storage expansion. It’s worth mentioning that you can also opt in for a dual-SIM card model.

The Gorilla Glass 4 protects the 5.2” 1080p Amoled display, which is just gorgeous. It is sharp, vibrant, bright and it has great viewing angles. Also, you can adjust colour temperature to your liking in the settings menu. 

On the top we have a 5MP selfie shooter with a bright f/1.9 aperture. Unfortunately, the phones does not have a notification LED light. 

On the bottom there are typical Samsung capacitive buttons with a nice backlight. The physical home button also doubles as a fingerprint scanner. While it is very accurate and recognises your fingerprint quickly, it does not work straight from the standby mode. For me, it is a huge letdown, because even some cheapest budget phones have this feature. 

The backplate is also covered by the sheet of the Gorilla Glass 4 and it is a fingerprint magnet but at least it is not that visible on the gold colour unit I have. 

As far as optics, we have optically-stabilised 13MP shooter with a single LED flash and a bright f/1.9 aperture.

The usual set of ports along with the loudspeaker and the mic are located on the bottom.

Overall, the phone feels really solid and if you asked me, I would say it could easily rival even the Galaxy S6. By the way, the full comparison review is just around the corner, so stay tuned to the TechLineHD for that. 

Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 Review: USER INTERFACE

When it comes to software, we are looking at the Samsung’s Touchwiz UI, which is built on top of Android 5.1. 

Although it is not as heavy as it used to be in the past, it is still Samsung’s UI after all. We have a briefing app, which is basically a news feed similar to the Blinkfeed we’ve seen on HTC phones for years. Also, we have redesigned icons, different colour schemes and so on. 

Some of the notable features would be the ability to quickly access the camera app straight from the standby mode by simply double tapping the home button. I have to say this is really good feature and it works well. 

A dedicated theme store allows you to choose from a variety of themes and lets you make the device look your own.

Finally, the Touchwiz UI is fast and snappy, and it’s a pleasure to use it as I didn’t have any hiccups or lags.

Samsung Galaxy A5 has a mid-range level specs. It uses an octa-core Snapdragon 615 chip with the clock speeds of up to 1.6GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage and only 11GB of it are available to the user.

While the phone will not be your next benchmarks champion, the hardware is definitely enough to run some graphically intensive games like Asphalt 8 at the highest settings without any lags but with just a few skipped frames.

The Snapdragon 615 chip is infamous for its overheating issues. However, I have to tell you that Samsung optimised it well and the phone does not overheat even after extensive periods of gaming.

The sound via earphones is actually very good. However, the volume output could be louder. 

The loudspeaker is pretty good too. While it is not the loudest out there, it has quite a balanced sound with a decent amount of depth.

As far as the camera app, we have a typical Samsung interface. There are some settings and shooting modes to play with but most importantly, the app is fast, responsive, easy to use and the capture speeds are very fast.

The daylight images are near excellent and it is almost on par with most of the flagships. There is a huge amount of details, colours look natural and contrast levels are great. A few flaws that differentiate the Galaxy A5 from the e.g. Galaxy S6 are the dynamic range and exposure adjustment in some shots but these are just minor complaints. Well, the Galaxy A5 is a midrange phone after all.

When it comes to indoor and low-light shots, the level of details decreases and more noise kicks in. Still, the phone is capable of producing some good looking images and that is thanks not only to the capable hardware but also to mature post-processing.

As for selfies, the Galaxy A5 is very good. It produces high-quality images with a good amount of details.

When it comes to the video recording, the phone can shoot up to 1080p videos and they look sharp, have lots of details, and the continuous auto-focus works fine. See a camera video review for various video samples.

All the connectivity options that include Wifi, Bluetooth and GPS are working fine. Also, the signal reception is excellent and the call quality is good.

The Galaxy A5 has a 2900mAh battery. In short, it performs really well. I could constantly get over 4.5h or even 5 hours of SOT even if used the phone quite intensively with maximum auto brightness setting. Also, the phone features a fast charging feature and I was able to fully charge the phone in less than 1.5 hours.

So, there you have it, the Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 edition. For around $400 you are getting a phone that has a premium design and excellent build quality, great display, fast UI, a fingerprint scanner, great battery life and a very good camera. 

The Snapdragon 615 chip does its job for day-to-day tasks very well and even for some gaming. However, if you are a serious gamer and you love playing the all latest 3D games, the processor along with the GPU will not be powerful enough for you.

Another shortcoming would be a fingerprint scanner. Don’t get me wrong, it is fast and accurate. However, it does not work straight from the standby mode as the majority of even a lot cheaper phones. Cmon Samsung, step up you fingerprint scanner game. 

All in all, the Samsung Galaxy A5 is a great phone despite a few shortcomings and I can definitely recommend it. However, I can’t say there aren’t any other alternatives out there at this price point. E.g. the Galaxy S6, which is still a flagship, can be bought at a similar price right now. It has a much better chipset for gamers but has some other disadvantages like poor battery life. 

At the end of the day, the Galaxy A5 is still an awesome phone and the chipset is the only major shortcoming if you care about gaming.

In this day and age, manufacturers seek to implement as much technology as possible into their devices. It has become a race of specs, which include chips and its clock speeds, architecture, Ram memory, software implementation etc. However, it is still quite difficult to perfect one department, which is a battery.

That being said, manufacturers work on higher resolution screens whereas 2k resolution has become a thing of a true flagship. Also, it means that the device is truly future proof. Well, it is a never ending discussion whether we really need the 2k screens or 1080p resolution is enough since the human eye finds it very difficult to distinguish what is over 300 ppi (this is the “Retina” threshold set by Apple).

It seems that one of the Huawei’s executives Yu Chengdong has a similar opinion. He says that he sees other companies producing the smartphones with the 2k screens. However, he asserts that it is almost impossible for a human eye to distinguish a difference. What it more, he thinks that this is too big of a trade-off for a battery life.

In addition to this, Yu Chengdong also stressed that the Huawei made some tests recently with the Meizu MX4 Pro and the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro (yes, you have to do that once you operate in the tough market as China). The tests that came out were very negative to the battery life (the type of tests are not disclosed). In particular, the Huawei’s executive stresses out the unreasonable specs of the Xiaomi’s Mi Note Pro. He thinks that having only 3000mAh battery, which needs to power a 5.7 inches screen, which has 2k resolution is not enough at all.

To sum up, we are seeing the company’s future strategy for the future. The Huawei will probably not try to implement 2k screen in any of their flagship devices in the near future, but they better focus on more power efficient devices.

What is more, we have a comparison video, where we can see a speed test between the iPhone 5s and the Meizu MX4 Pro. Here in the video we can see the Meizu’s flagship lagging from time to time, which definitely could be due to the 2k screen, which is too hard to handle for the chip inside the device:

As cellphone features continue to become more advanced today, cellphones that can handle all kinds of tasks have already become an integral part of our lives. You can see people either checking out their Facebook or Twitter, or reading the news on their phones. As cellphone features become more powerful, they end up consuming more power. Same goes for screen sizes. The larger the screen, the more power is consumed. As a result, today, battery life has become a very important issue to consider when producing smartphones.

In this article, we analyze and compare the battery life of several cellphones such as the Huawei Mate 7, Nokia Lumia 830, Meizu MX4, the Xiaomi Mi4, OnePlus One, IUNI U3, Sony Z1, and the iPhone 5S.

First, I will explain the testing procedure. All the cellphones start out fully charged. With the screen brightness at maximum, the phone in silent, and WiFi connection turned on, the phones undergo these tests: 30-minute video streaming, playing 30-minute videos that were already in the phone (1080p H.264 AAC MP4, 11304kbps), 30-minute gaming, and 30-minute phone calls. Here are the results:

First of all, as you can see from the table, most of the Android phones have at least 3000mAh. Those with the highest battery supply obviously have the advantage. A good example of this is the Huawei Mate 7 which consumed the least amount of power. If regularly used with moderation, you can use it for two days and one night.

Second to the Mate 7 is the OnePlus One which has a battery supply of 3100mAh but with only 40% of its power consumed. This is very impressive.

The difference between the other phones is not too great. They can last for a day and one night. The one that consumes the most power is the IUNI U3 which has a 2K display screen. Despite the fact that it has similar specifications to the Xiaomi Mi4 and OnePlus One, up to 52% of its power was consumed in the tests, making it hard to use for a day.

According to the data, phone calls consume a lot of paper. Also, playing games on the phone consume more power than in actual video game consoles. One reason is definitely due to the upgrades done with the phone’s hardware and software.

Based on these results, we have no choice but continue to charge our phones everyday until battery technology has become much more advanced. However, the development of rapid charging technology has given us hope.
