Nokia is gradually spreading its tentacles to other smart home gadgets after its failed adventure with Withings. The company last year acquired mesh networking start-up Unium and subsequently released its first mesh router dubbed Beacon 3.There is now a successor, or rather a trimmed down version known as Beacon 1.

The Beacon 1 wireless router features a sleeker build as well as a cheaper price tag. The device can work in tandem with its pricier sibling. It goes on sale today priced at $129. This is just about $70 cheaper than the Beacon 3. The price offer also includes a bundle of three for $299.

The most outstanding feature of the Beacon 1 wireless router is perhaps the new smart channel-hopping feature. Nokia calls the feature “Intelligent Channel Selection” and it lets the router pick the best channels for the 2.4- and 5GHz frequency bands by analyzing nearby wireless usage patterns over time, rather than simply picking the clearest channels at the moment. As such, you avoid picking up networks that may lose their strength in a jiffy.

In addition, the device also comes with a bridge mode that’s compatible with an existing router. This comes handy for turning the Beacon 1 into an access point that you can use with other routers, like the combo modem/Wi-Fi router your ISP supplied.
