Krafton India has announced that Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) Lite is officially in the works and slated for release by the end of 2026. It is a quiet confirmation of something the Indian mobile gaming community has been asking for since the original game was rebranded and brought back post-ban. But the real story here isn’t just that a lighter version of a popular battle royale is launching; it is about why it is happening right now.

For a few years, the standard version of BGMI ran perfectly fine on most mid-range and budget Android devices. However, the smartphone hardware market has hit a strange bottleneck recently. Driven by the mobile industry’s current obsession with integrating expensive AI-specific silicon, combined with a massive surge in global memory and RAM pricing, smartphone manufacturers have been forced to cut corners. The result is that the current crop of budget-tier smartphones actually offers worse raw gaming performance than devices released a couple of years ago.

According to us, this hardware regression makes a Lite version a practical necessity rather than just a portfolio expansion. Before the sweeping 2020 ban on apps with Chinese ties, PUBG Mobile Lite was incredibly popular in India, catering specifically to the massive demographic using entry-level hardware. When Krafton successfully navigated regulatory hurdles to relaunch the main game as BGMI, the Lite counterpart was left behind. At the time, it didn’t seem to matter much because budget phones were getting increasingly capable. That is simply no longer the case.

In its announcement, Krafton kept the specifics light, stating only that the game will arrive by the end of 2026 and aims to make the BGMI experience accessible to an even wider community of players. The company has not yet detailed exactly what graphical compromises, map size reductions, or gameplay tweaks will be made to accommodate lower-end hardware, noting that those specifics will be shared closer to the launch date.

Ultimately, launching BGMI Lite is a straightforward retention strategy. As the cost of entry for decent mobile gaming hardware creeps up, Krafton needs a way to keep its massive Indian player base engaged without relying on them to upgrade their phones. It is a pragmatic response to a smartphone market that has temporarily sacrificed budget gaming performance for AI features and component costs.

In related news, Ayaneo has recently launched the Konkr Pocket Advance retro handheld, featuring PS2 emulation in a compact GBA-inspired design.

Now, a new official poll has hinted at the developers possibly working on a “Lite” version of popular battle royale title.

The poll was shared on the official Discord channel of the mobile game. It suggests that the developers might be working on a new Lite version of Battlegrounds Mobile India. For those unaware, before PUBG Mobile was banned in India, PUBG Mobile Lite had also been released globally. This version of the game was specifically built for entry level affordable smartphones that did not meet the minimum hardware requirements to run PUBG Mobile. The Lite variant could even run on devices with or under 2GB of RAM and even featured lower graphics.

With BGMI being popular in India and entry level budget devices still being one of the most popular segments in the region, it won’t arrive as a surprise if Krafton actually does release Lite version. Unfortunately, there is still no official announcement regarding this variant or any details as to when it might possibly launch. Looking at the poll, we find a list of reasons why they believe Indian players might wants BGMI Lite, this includes:

I can’t play BGMI on my low end device.

I can play BGMI, but I’ll have better frame rates and performance in Lite version on my device.

I spent money in Lite version and want to transfer my data/inventory

I like the maps and Skins in Lite version.

According to a SportsKeeda report, a local esports athlete named Abhijeet “Ghatak” stated that the company is actually working on the Lite version of Battlegrounds Mobile India, which could launch sometime by the end of next month. If it does launch, it would likely feature lower requirements and even have a smaller download size as well. Keep in mind that this has yet to be confirmed as of right now, so take it with a pinch of salt. Oddly, we had reported earlier this year that a Lite version might not be a thing due to the game already being stripped down PUBG Mobile and supporting two regionally locked games might have them compete against one another. But, the company might have other plans.

BGMI is already a Striped Down PUBG Mobile

While in the past PUBG Mobile existed alongside PUBG Mobile Lite, we might not see a same deal with BGMI. For starters, Battlegrounds Mobile India is essentially a cut down version of the original PUBG Mobile and arrives with a lot of the content not being present in this version. This makes the game have a significantly lighter download of around 700MB. Furthermore, the game’s system requirements is just 2GB of RAM to run the title smoothly.

Krafton has even made a lot of the assets and side content of the game downloadable separately, while users are also given an option to install additional advanced resource packs based on their devices capabilities as well. To put it simply, Krafton has given quite a bit of thought behind this move that specifically caters to the Indian audience. Notably, the game can run well even on low to mid range smartphones of the current market, although, aging handsets could still struggle with BGMI.

Supporting two BGMI games will be difficult

While PUBG Mobile Lite has a system requirement of just 1GB of RAM and is generally more accessible, the current BGMI version offers a much better battle royale gameplay experience overall. Krafton has yet to launch the iOS port for the game as well, so it is also highly unlikely that it will launch a new version of the game before bringing the recently launched title to one of the “preferred” platforms. A major issue with BGMI Lite would be the division of the player base as the game is exclusive to India. So having two games will split Krafton’s audience and adding content and continuing support for both titles simultaneously will be even more difficult.
