<p>It&#8217;s been a long time since we first heard rumors about <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> planning to add Blood Glucose Monitoring support to the Apple Watch as a part of its health-related services.</p>



<p>Earlier this year, it was reported that the company had made major progress in the development, which led to speculations that it could get launched soon, but now a new report claims that the device isn&#8217;t coming anytime soon.</p>

<p>As per the latest report coming from Mark Gurman, the Apple Watch with support for the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/blood-glucose-monitoring">Blood Glucose Monitoring</a> feature is still several years away. He indicates that the device will take somewhere between three to seven years to go official.</p>



<p>It is said that the Cupertino-based technology giant still needs to work on the algorithms and onboard sensors to be able to bring the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/technology">technology</a> to market. Further, the size of a module also needs to be reduced to fit the small and thin package of the Apple Watch.</p>



<p>For Apple, it has been a long journey working on introducing a Blood Glucose Monitoring technology. It reportedly first started working on it in 2010 with the acquisition of RareLight, and then it worked with Avolante Health LLC before moving to Exploratory Design Group (XDG).</p>



<p>The goal for Apple appears to be able to warn users of its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/smartwatch">smartwatch</a> devices if they are prediabetic and suggest lifestyle changes before diabetes develops. It is speculated that the company is in the early stages of discussions to get regulatory approval for the technology.</p>

<p>At the last count, more than 2200 exhibitors will showcase their products during the most influential tech event this year, CES 2022. It will feature innovative products from a broad array of tech fields ranging from health, entertainment, fitness, mobility, and a whole lot more, and Quantum Operations is pitching itself into the fray with its smartwatch offering. The company says the new smartwatch will be of great assistance to diabetics who need to monitor their blood sugar levels regularly.</p>
<p>The watch features the possibility of monitoring the blood sugar levels pre and post-meal to check for changes in the metric. The smartwatch also features heart rate and blood oxygen monitoring to provide all-around health support. Quantum has released a video of the smartwatch which seems to yet to be out as a commercial product. It will however showcase a prototype of the smartwatch during CES 2022.</p>

<p>There has been a surge of innovative products that capture some of the very important health measurements and vital statistics using smart wearables. Quantum will hope that its new smartwatch will enjoy some great outings during CES 2022, although it is not the first brand to offer non-invasive blood glucose monitoring.</p>

Although none have the word Glucose/Blood Sugar monitoring, they hover around the Absorption Spectroscopy on Electronic devices.</p>
<p>If you recall, a company named Quantum Operation showed off a “<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/12/ces-2021-quantum-operation-prototype-wearable-noninvase-glucose-monitoring/">Spectrometer-based” prototype</a> that works on the interaction of light with the wrist at CES 2021. Here, Apple&#8217;s patents delves on using Ambient Sensors for Terahertz Spectroscopy and Imaging in Dynamic Environments.</p>
<p>Apple begins with limitations like lack of Space for New Sensors with Aperture/opening, Degraded Water resistivity, overall cost increase, etc. of the previous &#8216;Gas Sensor&#8217; design. Consequently, its new patent talks about using terahertz(THz) electromagnetic radiation(EMR) on previous spectroscopy methods.</p>
<p>A transmitter of the electronic device will emit EM waves in THz into a dynamic environment like a user&#8217;s skin. A receiver will then absorb the reflected wave back. Following this, a spectral response having absorption Spectra(data about the Obstacle) is compared with known Spectra(Fixed values).</p>

<p>Apple adds that this tech might go beyond the borders of <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/non-invasive-blood-glucose-monitoring">non-invasive Glucose monitoring</a>. It says that absorption spectroscopy will play a vital role in overall health including detecting skin cancers/disorders in the future.</p>
<p>Either way, the technology is new and immature so it needs a lot of studies as currently, it might have discrepancies with that of Hospital Monitoring techniques.</p>

<p>Quantum Operation Inc., has showcased a prototype of a Wearable that typically is like a <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/smartwatch">Smartwatch</a>. It says that the wearable can measure and monitor the Glucose levels in Blood precisely in addition to heart rate and ECG. Apparently, this is possible due to the presence of a Spectrometer inside.</p>
<p>On wearing it on the wrist, a user will have to just press the monitoring option from the Menu. The results will take about 20 seconds. If you consider Blood Glucose monitoring so far it requires a person to pierce his/her fingers or use an implanted monitor. However, this prototype reportedly uses the principle of the <strong>Raman Spectroscopy</strong> technique.</p>

<p>It is an interaction of light with the chemical bonds of a material. This technique finds its significance in Noninvasive glucose monitoring according to various projects in the past. Reports say that a laser passed through a fiber optic cable can help monitor Glucose by pressing it against the wrist.</p>

Coming back, the initial data sample provided by Quantum Operation reportedly has a lot of fluctuations compared to traditional flash glucose monitoring.</p>
<p>Considering this as just a prototype, we can let it slide. However, the company should work more on the accuracy if it plans to make this a working solution. Speaking of which, Quantum says that it plans to sell this wearable to healthcare professionals, insurers and build a big data platform to test the information of patients more.</p>
