OPPO Redesigns Smartwatch Blood Pressure Monitoring Patent Without Air Nozzle

OPPO has been granted a patent that could change how blood pressure monitoring systems are integrated into smartwatches. Filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the patent outlines a simplified and more efficient method for measuring blood pressure.

Limitations of Current Technology

Smartwatches like Huawei’s Watch D2 use an airbag in the strap to measure blood pressure. The airbag is inflated by an air pump located in the watch head, connected via an air nozzle. While functional, this design has a significant drawback: the air nozzle takes up space in the watch head, limiting the placement of other components such as additional sensors.

How OPPO’s System Works

OPPO’s patent eliminates the need for a separate air nozzle by incorporating the air path into the watch strap. The watch head houses an air pump and a shell assembly that connects to the strap via a “connecting assembly.” This connection completes the air path, allowing the pump to inflate and deflate the airbag without a separate nozzle.

This design not only reduces manufacturing complexity but also provides better placement options for internal components. It frees up space in the watch head, allowing for more compact and flexible designs.

Although OPPO has secured the patent, it is unclear when the company will introduce this technology to its smartwatches. Reports suggest the upcoming OPPO Watch X2 may feature blood pressure monitoring, but it is not confirmed if this specific system will be used.

On the topic of the Watch X2, reports so far have revealed that the watch will come in three different models: the standard Watch X2, a larger 46mm version, and the premium Watch X2 Pro, with some models possibly rebranded as the OnePlus Watch 3 globally. Key features include blood pressure and ECG monitoring, wrist temperature measurement, a 60-second health check, and fitness tracking with GPS support.

Xiaomi has teased its first-ever smartwatch for blood pressure monitoring. The smartwatch called “Xiaomi Wrist ECG Blood Pressure Recorder” is set to be officially launched on October 26th alongside Xiaomi 14, Hyper OS, and Xiaomi Watch S3.

The Smartwatch will Feature China’s Class II Medical Device Certification

According to the teased image, this smartwatch will feature a round dial with a sleek, non-bulky design and two physical buttons on the right side. The strap seems sturdy and is expected to include inflation and pressure functions to assist in blood pressure measurements. Alongside medical grade features the watch will also incorporate top-tier smart features.

The watch will feature a user-friendly interface that prominently displays blood pressure readings, distinguishing between systolic and diastolic pressures. These readings come with color-coded risk level indicators.

The smartwatch is expected to be highly portable, enabling users to check their blood pressure anywhere, making it especially useful for older individuals managing hypertension. Additionally, it will offer automatic measurement settings for added convenience. The watch has received China’s Class II Medical Device certification.

Additional details from the Beijing Municipal Drug Administration indicate that the Xiaomi Wrist ECG Blood Pressure Recorder package will include the watch, strap, airbag, a charging base, and mobile app software.

Huawei Watch D with blood pressure monitoring to soon launch in Europe

Last year, Huawei had launched its flagship smartwatch in its home country China, dubbed Huawei Watch D. The device was recently showcased at the IFA Berlin, indicating the device is all set for its global debut.

Now, the Chinese giant has announced that the Huawei Watch D will soon be launched in the European market, but the exact launch date or the name of the countries where it will be officially announced remains unknown.

The company has announced that the Huawei Watch D will be made available in the European market this fall, which means it will be launched by the end of this year. It is expected to be priced at €449.

With such a price tag, it is more expensive than the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro, given that the smartwatch from Huawei comes with a built-in blood pressure monitor. It also comes with an electrocardiogram (ECG), a heart rate monitor, a skin temperature sensor, and a SpO2 sensor that can monitor blood oxygen levels.

The Huawei Watch D has a custom-made high-hardness aviation aluminum body with improved durability and scratch resistance. It features a 1.64-inch HD display that offers a 326PPI pixel density. The device is rated IP68 for water and dust resistance and is also the industry’s first watch with blood pressure monitoring support to come with such a rating.

It also supports heart rate detection through an eight-channel high-sensitivity optical sensor and has support for 70+ sports modes. Apple Watch will get blood pressure monitoring by 2024 at the earliest

The hope of adding a blood pressure sensor to the Apple Watch, for now, may not materialize. Apple has continued to fine-tune the sensor to meet its high standards and it is projected that the sensor will not be ready before 2024. The main issue is reported to be accuracy concerns.

A new report from Bloomberg says that the blood pressure monitoring feature will likely arrive in Apple Watches by 2024. The current report is in sync with earlier projections that put the feature a few years away. As per the Bloomberg report, the blood pressure monitoring feature is being tested by Apple but the results have not met a priori expectations and were not sufficiently accurate. It is also speculated that the sensor is yet to output specific measurements, but rather triggers a notification to see the doctor about hypertension.

The feature is yet to provide actual Systolic and Diastolic readings which is a critical component in current smart wearables that output blood pressure readings. A few brands have already incorporated the blood pressure sensor into their smartwatches with great effect. Apple will hope to overcome the current challenges to add the feature to the Apple Watch. This is bound to increase the lifesaving credentials of the device several notches higher.

In line with that, the company has now released a new feature for the Amazfit GTR 3 Pro smartwatch that adds automatic blood pressure monitoring support during the nighttime through the combination of sleep monitoring and blood pressure monitoring.

The Amazfit GTR 3 Pro smartwatch uses PPG high-precision optical sensor for blood pressure health management and can provide continuous monitoring without the user going through discomfort of any kind.

With the help of an algorithm, it can analyze the data collected for the user’s sleep pattern as well as the blood pressure monitoring and can provide results that can be helpful in motoring the user’s health.

A few months ago, the company had released the PumpBeats blood pressure monitoring engine for the Amazift GTR 3 Pro smartwatch that can monitor blood pressure without airbags or cuffs just through a single press of a button.

Huawei‘s upcoming Watch D has been a hot topic as of late due to its blood pressure tracking capabilities, but people have been curious as to how the device will achieve this feat. Now, new leaks have surfaced featuring a video guide on how to use Watch D’s blood pressure monitoring features.

The known tipster 看山的叔叔 took to Weibo (a Chinese microblogging site) and leaked a whole host of information about the upcoming Watch D, including accessories, memory and RAM configurations, a silver color variant as well as a video guide on how to use Watch D’s blood pressure monitoring features (via).

From the pictures, it is apparent that the Huawei WATCH D will come with multiple accessories, including the body of the watch, different sizes of straps, different sizes of airbags, as well as the ruler for measuring your wrist’s circumference, a charger, user guide, etc.

Huawei is gearing up for an upcoming event, which is scheduled for 23 December 2021. The event would likely have the company launching a number of new products, one of which may includes the Watch D smartwatch.

According to an XDADevelopers report, the Chinese tech giant is planning on launching a new wearable later this month during the December 23 event. Apart from the usual features that modern day smartwatches offer, the new Watch D will even feature precise blood pressure monitoring as well. This feature is similar to the one that is currently offered by the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, which was the first to introduce this technology on wearables.

Although, the Watch D is expected to be released for a price lower than the Galaxy Watch 4 series. Notably, the smartwatch will likely support Huawei Health app as well, which would allow users to keep and track a detailed history of their blood pressure results and monitor any changes. Unfortunately, not much information is known regarding this device apart from its highlighting feature as of right now. Huawei to reportedly launch new products next month; some support blood pressure monitoring

Huawei, in its effort to regain some lost market share, is planning to host a product launch event in December where the Chinese giant will be unveiling a number of devices, including a flip-type foldable smartphone named Huawei Mate V.

Although the exact launch date has not been known yet, a new report coming from a tipster on Weibo (via ITHome) claims that the company could be launching smartwatches, ink screens, Bluetooth glasses, and some other products with support for blood pressure monitoring at this upcoming event.

So far, among all these types of products, names of only two products are known — Huawei Mate V for the flip folding smartphone and Huawei Watch D for the smartwatch.

The specifications of the Mate V as well as details of its design are currently unknown. It was previously reported that Huawei is working on a foldable phone with a clamshell design similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3. However, there is no link connecting this clamshell foldable to the Mate V expected to launch next quarter. Time will tell if they are one and the same or two different devices.

On the other hand, coming to the Huawei Watch D, there’s no information about what the “D” in the device’s name indicates. Huawei previously launched a smartwatch named Watch GT where the GT stands for “Gran Turismo.” It may be that Huawei is rebranding its devices and thus, opted for a simpler name for the upcoming product.

This new smartwatch is expected to come with many health and fitness-related features, including a heart rate monitor, blood pressure monitor, and body fat monitor. If this turns out to be true, then it will be the first smartwatch from the company to come with support for blood pressure monitoring.
