Huawei, the Chinese tech giant has brought a new convenience feature for its users in Europe and Africa. The company has partnered up with Bolt, the popular ride-hailing service, which was one of the first major brands to join Huawei’s AppGallery. Now, it is about to become even easier for users to access following its integration with Huawei’s map service, Petal Maps.

Huawei customers with smartphones based on Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), and customers who download Petal Maps from Google Play, have now an additional option when they search the directions and length of a journey from one location to another. As well as car, public transport, walking and cycling, they will also see ride hailing.

Once a user clicks on the Boult icon, they will automatically be taken to the Bolt app where they can book a driver, check the driver’s details and distance, and see how much the journey will cost.

The two companies have also collaborated at a software developmental level with Bolt integrating Huawei’s Map Kit allowing it to power the app with personalized displays and interactions for HMS devices.

But that’s not all, Petal Maps has recently been enhanced with new updates, including Lane Guidance which is aimed at helping drivers to enjoy enhanced route planning, and help in complex traffic situations, and Offline Maps, which allows users to take advantage of search and navigation functions, even when they have no signal.

In addition, searching for amenities is easier thanks to its new and improved ‘one-touch’ search functions which show multiple services such as petrol stations, restaurants, ATMs, and convenience stores that are nearby.

Huawei’s ever-expanding App store, the AppGallery has a new addition today – Bolt. The emerging ride-hailing app in Europe is often considered as a cheaper alternative to Uber especially in cities like London. And with this addition, Huawei users finally have a popular ride-hailing service on its own app store.

Bolt’s presence on the Huawei AppGallery is a win-win for both the companies. Despite the US ban, Huawei is still the third-largest smartphone maker in Europe with a solid 18% market share. However, until today, AppGallery lacked a popular ride-hailing app like Uber. Technically, you could get the missing apps via third-party app stores like APKPure and Amazon App Store for Android. But now, Bolt fills this void without the need to download any other app store.

Huawei has managed to add a number of important apps to its AppGallery this year. You’ll find popular apps in multiple categories like Deezer, TIDAL, MX Player, RT, UKTVPlay, Eurosport, Premier League in media and entertainment and Viber, Telegram, TikTok, Tinder, Zoom, Badoo in social. And as of March 2020, Huawei has already integrated over 60,000 apps with HMS Core.

With no signs of respite from the ban, it makes sense for Huawei to invest heavily in its own products like the AppGallery. In this regard, the company recently launched the HUAWEI HMS App Innovation Contest – with an award pool of USD$1 Million Prize.

Bolt surged into the ride-sharing scene in 2013 and grabbed some market share from rival Uber especially in major African countries and Eastern Europe. The firm presently has more than 30 million users in over 35 countries. Ride-hailing services have definitely taken a hit by the COVID-19 lockdown and social distancing practices. Thus, Bolt has shifted its attention to yet another transportation service – electric scooter service.

Bold officially unveiled its own electric scooter model on Wednesday. The company also disclosed that it aims to launch the scooter service in more than 45 cities this summer.

“A lean mindset and efficient operations have helped Bolt to bring quick, affordable and reliable urban transport services to millions of people in Europe and in Africa,” Dmitri Pivovarov, head of scooter business at Bolt, said in a statement.

Bolt said its model’s design and engineering are focused around modularity, which makes it easily repairable and lowers the cost of maintenance for the ride-sharing service.

The new scooter weighs 17kg, which makes it the lightest model used in scooter sharing. This reduced weight is achieved through the scooter being made of 90% aluminium.

The scooter features inflatable tires that help ensure better grip and smoother, safer rides. It can go for more than 40km on a single charge. Its maximum speed is 25km/h. But this is obviously limited according to local regulations.

The scooter also features front and rear lights, as well as front and side reflectors to help maintain riders’ safety during dark hours. Scooters come with built-in GPS trackers which provides data about where they are parked and whether they are ready for use.

Bolt had earlier last month launched the scooter service in Bratislava, Slovakia. The scooter app is similar to the taxi service app. It costs €0.50 to unlock a scooter and 15 cents per minute they are used up to €15, which would be the price for a whole day.

The app also has information about the maximum range of the scooters, so as to remove the risk of renting one with a discharged battery.
