Xiaomi has introduced significant changes to its Bootloader (BL) unlocking policy, effective from January 1, 2025. These updates mark a significant shift in the company’s approach to device customization, with stricter rules aimed at balancing security concerns and misuse prevention. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the new policy, its implications, and what users should know.

Key Changes in New Policy

Stricter Process Requirements:

The entire unlocking process including answering eligibility questions, applying, registering, binding the account to the device, unlocking, and post-unlock usage must now be completed on the same device. This ensures tighter integration and prevents unauthorized device modifications.

Reduced Unlock Validity Period:

Once a user receives approval for unlocking, they have only 336 hours (14 days) to complete the binding and unlocking process. If this window lapses, the unlock permission becomes void and cannot be extended or reissued.

One Device Per Year Limit:

Previously, users could unlock up to three devices per year. The new policy reduces this to a single device annually, impacting both Xiaomi’s native Chinese market and global users. Individuals who have unlocked a device in the past 12 months must wait for their one-year period to expire before unlocking another device.

Real-Name Authentication:

All steps in the process must be completed by the verified Xiaomi account holder. Any misuse, such as using the unlock qualification for another person’s device, will result in severe consequences, including permanent account suspension and potential legal action.

Why Xiaomi Is Tightening Its Bootloader Policies

The move to restrict bootloader unlocking comes as Xiaomi, like other manufacturers, grapples with security concerns associated with unlocked devices. Unlocking a device’s bootloader provides users with greater control over its software, enabling activities such as flashing custom ROMs, rooting, and modifying system-level features. However, these freedoms also expose devices to potential misuse, including unauthorized modifications and malicious activities.

By limiting the number of devices that can be unlocked and implementing rigorous verification processes, Xiaomi aims to mitigate these risks. The policy also appears to be an attempt to curb abuses of the system, such as mass unlocking for commercial purposes. Additionally, Xiaomi’s focus on software stability suggests a desire to encourage users to stick to its official operating system, Xiaomi HyperOS, rather than rely on custom ROMs.

Impact on Developers and Users

The new bootloader policy has sparked mixed reactions within Xiaomi’s community. For developers and enthusiasts, the restriction is a significant roadblock. These users often work with multiple devices for testing and development purposes, and the one-device-per-year limit could slow down their work. The change is also likely to affect the custom ROM ecosystem, as fewer unlocked devices may lead to delays in the development of third-party software.

On the other hand, the majority of Xiaomi’s user base, which consists of normal users, is unlikely to be impacted. Most people do not unlock their device bootloaders, so the policy change might go unnoticed by them. However, for those who rely on bootloader unlocking for personal or professional reasons, careful planning and prioritization will now be essential.

Bootloader Unlock Application Guide

Eligibility Test:

Users must pass a mandatory quiz to apply for unlock permission. The quiz is intentionally challenging to ensure only experienced users proceed.

Approval Process:

Successfully registering does not guarantee approval. Permissions are subject to a final review and are tied to the Xiaomi account holder’s verified identity.

Device Binding:

A SIM card must be inserted, and the account used for the application must already be bound to the device before unlocking can proceed.

Post-Unlock Restrictions:

Once unlocked, users cannot unlock another device within 12 months. Additionally, unlocked devices will not receive Xiaomi’s official updates.

FAQs

What is Bootloader Unlocking?

Unlocking the bootloader allows users to modify the device’s software, including flashing custom ROMs or rooting. It’s primarily aimed at developers and advanced users.

Will unlocking again after relocking the device consume eligibility?

Yes. Regardless of previous unlocks, users must reapply for permission through the Xiaomi community.

Can I unlock multiple devices with one approval?

No. Starting in 2025, each Xiaomi account can unlock only one device per year.

Are third-party unlock tools safe?

No. The Xiaomi community is the only official channel for bootloader unlock applications. Third-party tools can lead to device damage or personal data theft.

What happens if I miss the 14-day validity period?

Unlock permissions will expire, and you’ll need to reapply from the beginning.

As expected, Xiaomi has revamped its bootloader unlocking process in 2025, tightening regulations to address growing security concerns and the declining popularity of custom ROMs. The new rules, effective January 1, 2025, emphasize stricter timelines, single-device limitations, and a rigorous approval process.

Key Changes in the 2025 Policy

Under the updated framework, users must now complete the entire unlocking process – quiz, registration, application, binding, and unlocking on the same device. Additionally, once eligibility is granted, users have only 14 days (336 hours) to complete the process. Missing this window voids the permission, which cannot be extended or reissued.

Another major change is the reduction in device limits. Previously, users could unlock up to three devices within the validity period. The new policy restricts this to just one device per Xiaomi account, reinforcing the company’s shift toward tighter control over post-unlock scenarios.

The application process has become more demanding. Users must pass a challenging quiz designed to screen non-experts and ensure only experienced developers proceed. Identity verification has also been enhanced, requiring real-name authentication and strict adherence to account-device pairing. Misuse of permissions, such as unlocking devices for others, could lead to permanent account suspension or legal repercussions.

Xiaomi highlights that unlocking the bootloader may expose devices to security vulnerabilities and is discouraged for casual users. It also notes that locked bootloaders are mandatory for receiving Xiaomi HyperOS updates. To further streamline the process, Xiaomi has restricted unlocking permissions to retail devices sold in mainland China, with separate policies governing international markets.

By implementing these measures, Xiaomi aligns with the industry’s cautious approach to bootloader unlocking, emphasizing user security while catering to the diminishing demand for custom ROMs.

The Potential Impact on Users

Bootloader unlocking is a critical feature that allows users to install custom ROMs, root their devices, and gain administrative control over their smartphones. This has been a major selling point for Xiaomi, attracting tech-savvy users who appreciate the flexibility and customization options. However, the company’s decision to restrict bootloader unlocking in China has raised concerns about its future plans for global markets.

If Xiaomi were to implement a global ban on bootloader unlocking, it would significantly limit the customization options available to users. Many rely on custom ROMs for improved performance, security updates, or unique features. Restricting bootloader access would effectively tie users to Xiaomi’s official software, potentially limiting their ability to tailor their devices to their specific needs.

Xiaomi’s decision to end bootloader unlocking in China may reflect a shift in their software approach due to stricter Chinese regulations on user data and device security. The upcoming HyperOS 2.0, launching with the flagship Xiaomi 15 series, is expected to implement this full bootloader lock, confirming earlier reports.

The Xiaomi community is closely watching this development with a mix of concern and speculation. While the company has not officially confirmed or denied these reports, the potential implications for users are significant. Many are hoping that Xiaomi will reconsider its plans and continue to prioritize user freedom, even as it navigates the evolving regulatory landscape.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Xiaomi will ultimately decide to restrict bootloader unlocking for its global users. The company’s decision will have a profound impact on the future of customization and user freedom in the Android ecosystem.

Speculations Surrounding Xiaomi’s Bootloader Unlocking Policy

Recent leaks from Xiaomi Community China revealed a hidden “Bootloader Unlock Beta” option, suggesting the company’s intention to tighten bootloader unlocking procedures. The motivations behind these changes remain unclear, but they may be driven by concerns related to security and software integrity.

These potential complications in bootloader unlocking could adversely affect users, especially those interested in installing custom ROMs. If implemented, users may need to invest more effort in understanding and navigating the new procedures.

Xiaomi’s recent launch of the Xiaomi 14 series in China introduced the HyperOS, replacing MIUI. Xiaomi later confirmed (via Android Authority) that bootloader unlocking will be disabled by default on HyperOS smartphones, citing reasons such as security, data protection, and user experience. Users will now need to request permission to unlock the bootloader through Xiaomi’s community forum.

There are reports that for Chinese users, additional restrictions include reaching a “level five” status on the Xiaomi community forums, time-sensitive unlock permissions, and a limit of three unlocked devices annually. These restrictions specifically apply to the Chinese version of HyperOS, with global users awaiting further announcements.

Moreover, Xiaomi disclosed that users who unlock their bootloader will no longer receive HyperOS updates, impacting both MIUI 14 and HyperOS. However, users can regain access to updates by relocking their devices.

As always, XDA Developers came to the rescue by contacting the company directly on this matter. To this, a Xiaomi India spokesperson gave the below statement.

“Unlocking of the bootloader is made available to make sure that MIUI developer ROMs can be tested by users and will be covered under warranty. Bootloader unlocking does not inherently void your hardware warranty. But a case where the unlocking results in a brick which cannot be fixed via software, the warranty will be void.”

According to the statement, bootloader unlock is made available for users to try MIUI developer ROMs. And thus, it will not void the warranty of any Xiaomi or Redmi smartphone. But if the device bricks after unlocking and could not be fixed via software, then the warranty will be void.

That means if a user installs some custom ROM or mod, which results in hard bricking of their smartphone which could be only fixed either via EDL pin-shorting or motherboard replacement, then they can bid adieu to their device’s warranty.

In such a case, the user will have to pay the whole amount required for any hardware replacement or EDL flashing service. Whereas, under warranty, the user has to just pay a nominal fee of ₹150 + taxes to fix their device in India.

Lastly, it is worth noting that this new policy is only applicable for Xiaomi and Redmi smartphones since POCO operates independently.

It is the third consecutive device in the Mi A series which has been launched in India under the Android One program. The Chinese company has added various new advancements to the Mi A2 successor. The device is accompanied by a triple camera sensor, Super AMOLED display, and an in-display fingerprint sensor. In today’s writeup, we will help users to unlock the bootloader of the Xiaomi Mi A3.

Unlocking the bootloader is the first and the foremost thing to do before flashing any MOD or custom ROM. The unlocking opens the door for the users to tweak the system as per their own requirement. They can improve the performance and battery efficiency by removing unnecessary bloatware from the device. The ability to flash third-party recovery comes only after unlocking the bootloader.

A phone with an unlocked bootloader can be rooted and gets support for custom ROMs and kernels. If you own a Realme 2 Pro, you will be excited to know there is now a way for you to unlock the bootloader of your phone.

Realme has released a tutorial on how owners of the Realme 2 Pro can unlock their bootloader though they have named it “In-depth Test”.

Unlocking the bootloader includes several steps, one of which is submitting an application that may take up to seven days to be reviewed. Once approved, an OTA will be sent to your phone. After installing the OTA you can then proceed with the rest of the steps.

Unlocking the bootloader will result in a complete data wipe, so ensure you back up your data before beginning. There may also be issues with certain features of your phone after you are done and you will also not be able to receive new versions of OPPO’s ColorOS when available.

Whilst this will probably appear on Nexus based Roms first, it is worth noting that with Android M google are really looking to up security levels.

The OS will probably display one of the following warning messages to let you know that there could be a problem with your operating system.

This warning lets you know that your device has a different operating system than the one that originally came on your device, depending on whether you changed the OS (If you aren’t sure, you probably didn’t), if you choose to instal a different Rom you can continue to use your device with that operating system.

If however you did not install the different OS you can still continue to use it but google advise that you may have a better experience with the original OS, they also advise that you can contact the device manufacturers support centre for help restoring to the original OS.

This warning lets you know that your device is in an “unlocked” state, meaning that your operating system can’t be checked to make sure that it’s safe to use.

Depending on whether you changed the OS (If you aren’t sure, you probably didn’t), if you choose to instal a different Rom you can continue to use your device with that operating system.

If you unlocked your boot loader you can continue to use your device, however, you acknowledge that your device may be exposed to security risks.

Google recommend that if you aren’t making changes to the OS regularly, to improve security you should lock the device by running fastboot lock.

This warning lets you know that the operating system on your device has been changed or corrupted and is not safe to use, the device may not work properly and could expose your data to corruption and security risks.

Depending on whether you changed the OS (If you aren’t sure, you probably didn’t), if you choose to instal a different Rom you can continue to use your device, however, you acknowledge that your device may be exposed to security risks.

If you did not change the OS you should not use the device in its current state, Google advise that you should contact the device manufacturers support centre for help restoring to the original OS.

If you choose to ignore the warning messages should go away on their own after about 10 seconds and your device will continue starting up, however if you still see the warning message, you can choose to continue starting up your device by pressing the power button once.

If you’re not comfortable continuing to use the device, you can turn it off by pressing and holding the power button until your device turns off. You can contact the device’s manufacturer for help restoring the original operating system.

What do you think, are you a constant Rom swapper? or do you prefer to stick with original manufacturer roms? is the added security that this may bring worth the annoyance at boot up? or will you be looking for a rom and boot loader for your phone that has been coded to work around this?

Personally I like to try out new roms fairly often and have been impressed with the way rom devs over at XDA have managed to work around Samsungs Knox to enable custom Roms with out flagging up on boot, lets see how they get on with this should it become mainstream with Android M.
