These were smartphones with a camera hidden beneath the display. Despite being seen nearly a year ago, no smartphones have featured this technology yet and OPPO‘s VP has revealed that the technology will probably not be seen in 2020 at all.

According to Brian Shen, the Vice President of OPPO, people shouldn’t put high expectations of the technology at the moment. The primary reason for this is the image quality. Unlike regular selfie cameras, the under screen sensors will struggle with high resolution image quality. The senior executive stated that the technology is quite complicated and it will take some time to perfect. OPPO had previously teased the technology through a prototype, as did Xiaomi through a video teaser.

Editor’s Pick: OnePlus teases starting price of the upcoming smart TV lineup in India

Furthermore, the technology may also be expensive and could only be sported on high end flagship models. But since the image quality is taking a noticeable hit, companies will likely not opt for this technology for now. According to Shen, the process of achieving the desired result from the under screen camera is a long and difficult one. Although, a commercial appearance may just arrive soon after 2020.

Currently, various smartphone brands have had their R&D departments try and develop a viable under screen camera setup. While a few have unveiled their prototypes, none of them have been mass produced or sold commercially. So stay tuned, as we will be covering any developments regarding this highly anticipated smartphone camera technology.

However, earlier today, Brian Shen announced that he was resigning from his post as the president of global marketing and chief marketing officer of OPPO’s Mainland China business citing personal health reasons.

Brian didn’t elaborate on his resignation and we are not sure whether he’ll be back to working at OPPO in any other position. But judging from OPPO’s official statement, it looks like Brian will be taking a break from work.

“Current president of global marketing Brian Shen Yiren will step down from his position due to personal health reasons,” OPPO said in a statement on its website. “We look forward to him returning to the Oppo family.”

Liu Lie, who currently serves as OPPO’s brand director, will take his place as the global marketing president as well as CMO for Mainland China. Liu will report directly to OPPO’s founder and CEO Tony Chen. Liu has been an essential part of OPPO since 2004 and helped create sub-brands such as the OPPO Find and Real series.

Brian’s resignation comes at a time when OPPO is battling Coronavirus across its key markets. While things are slowly getting back to normal in Mainland China, other important markets like India are still in a state of lockdown. And with the sales of smartphones halted, OPPO and other phone makers are looking at zero smartphone sales for the month of April in several markets such as India.

Many tech enthusiasts applauded it for innovation. Later, the users even verified the facts as being an excellent device last year. Due to its massive sales, we were expecting the R19 this year with a similar approach. There were many rumors and leaks also which were pointing towards its release. Amid all the leaks, Vice President of Oppo and the leader of Domestic division, Shen Yiren said that Oppo R19 is not going to launch this year.

Today, giving information about the advancements, Shen took to his official Weibo handle and announced the delay in R19 launch this year. There are many other announcements which followed as replies on Weibo by Shen. As per the VP of Oppo, the Chinese company is keen on bringing new selfie centric devices to emerging markets. Unknowingly, it seems Yiren has confirmed the Oppo F11 Pro launch in Asia Pacific region in upcoming months. It is the Oppo’s next innovative device with a revolutionary pop-up camera design. Oppo F11 Pro will come with a front full screen and Snapdragon high-level chipset. Further, it is expected to hit the markets in Africa such as Kenya, Morocco, and the Gulf region.

Further, he even discussed the foldable displays and said they are not providing any significant value. He said this on the basis of experience he had with the engineering prototypes of the foldable display. As per him, the foldable displays are not serving the purpose and are not solving any problem. These views won’t end all the rumors which stated that Oppo is working on a foldable device. Indeed, it will give rest to those rumors which were seen on the web from the recent past.

In January, Oppo CEO Chen Mingyong also discussed their views regarding the upcoming 5G devices. In an interview with Qualcomm China, Chen said that they are working on to build a 5G compatible device. Oppo is soon going to launch a new smartphone with Snapdragon 855.

Many new technologies will make debut in this year’s Oppo flagship device. As seen in January at Future Technology communication Conference in Bejing, Oppo’s 10x hybrid optical zoom and a new in-screen fingerprint sensor are expected to come packed with upcoming Oppo’s high-end device.
