Value flagships are all the rage in 2025, becoming the tech industry’s new buzzwords. For a relatively affordable price tag, you can get flagship level performance, powerful camera systems, and a premium design. Sounding too good to be true? It probably is since there is always a slight catch (or two). On paper, these devices seem like “no brainer” buys, but there are always compromises to consider. So in this article, we unpack where brands trim costs and what it means for you as a buyer.

Flagship Performance on a Budget*

At the heart of most value flagships is a powerful SoC, which is often a recent Snapdragon or Dimensity flagship chip. This is coupled with plenty of RAM and storage as well. So you get impressive benchmark scores, smoother everyday performance, and a great gaming experience. But there are a few ways brands can cut corners in this regard.

One of the most common aspects is choosing an older generation flagship chip. An example is the Snapdragon 8 Elite/8 Gen 5 powered devices that are coming out now. While these are still quite powerful, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 stands out as the most powerful Android chipset. Similarly, we have the Dimensity 9500 SoC, which is basically just as powerful.

Another area that can impact performance is the thermal dissipation system. A top tier smartphone brings advanced cooling solutions like vapor chambers, heat pipes, and graphite layers. You might find these on gaming or performance focused value flagships, but other models could skip or simplify such a feature entirely. This can lead to thermal throttling, which leads to an inconsistent experience during sustained performance.

Where Display Quality Gets Trimmed

Another common corner cut in value flagships is the display. Premium devices typically use high-end AMOLED panels with top-tier brightness, colour accuracy, and adaptive refresh technologies. To keep costs down, value flagships might employ panels with lower peak brightness, less refined calibration, lower resolution, and a few other downgrades.

In-display fingerprint scanners are quite common for smartphones, but there are different types here as well. An ultrasonic sensor is typically reserved for flagship phones, while anything below these carries an optical scanner. LTPO is another display tech that enables variable refresh rates. This helps conserve battery life without compromising on display smoothness. Fortunately, more and more smartphones are beginning to shift to the more advanced fingerprint scanning tech, but only Chinese brands are leading this shift.

Brands trying to make value flagships cheaper often take out certain features related to charging or use materials weaker materials for the build quality. Wireless charging is one of the first aspects that don’t make the cut. Similarly, Corning Gorilla Glass is often used for a more robust build quality. Vivo X100 is a great runner up for the best affordable flagship phone in India. This model has one of the best camera setup in this list. On the front, there is a 6.78-inch LTPO 1.5K AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 32MP selfie shooter, while the rear packs a 50MP (Main) + 64MP (Telephoto) + 50MP (Ultrawide) triple cameras.

While the Xiaomi 14 (Review) was launched as premium smartphone, it was soon available for a more affordable price. This made it quite a deal as a budget flagship. Two months ago, the Xiaomi 14 was listed for just Rs 47,999 (roughly 572 US Dollars). This made it the most affordable flagship phone in this list and in the Indian market.

Apple iPhone 16

Apple’s latest iPhone 16 debuted in India back in September 2024. The base model was unveiled with a starting price tag of Rs 79,900. While this isn’t exactly affordable, it is more approachable than most ultra premium smartphones. The iPhone 16 brings a notable design change with a dedicated camera button and revamped camera placement.

You’re also getting Face ID for security, 48MP dual cameras on the rear, and IP68 water and dust resistance. POCO India has been focusing on budget, and mid-range smartphones lately. It began the year with POCO X2 and then carried over to the POCO M2 Pro. While everyone was expecting that the next device would be a flagship, it came out with a POCO X3 and finally POCO C3. However, the company has finally spilled the beans on the next plan. Before you start guessing, yes it’s an answer to the million-dollar question, “when is the next POCO F smartphone coming?”.

Anuj Sharma, Country Director of POCO India, and Manmohan, General Manager of Poco India, confirmed(via Mukul Sharma) in the latest AMA(ASK ME ANYTHING) session that they are working on the POCO F series right now. Now, after this, one would pretty much expect that POCO’s next launch will be an F series device. But POCO didn’t say anything about the launch and hence, we will have to wait for a bit.

Anyway, we really hope that POCO surprises everyone by bringing back the budget flagship series sooner to India, maybe in a few months. That said, if you ask me, going by the numbers, the next device will mostly be the POCO F2 and not darn the ‘Pro’ branding. This is because the naming has reached everywhere and currently, it is probably the most asked question regarding POCO. Additionally, Anuj had earlier confirmed that POCO F2 Pro won’t come to India.

He had said in an interview with Indian Express that POCO F2 Pro isn’t a true successor to the POCO F1. Coming back, while answering another question regarding creating the magic of POCO F1 again, Manmohan says that it’s very difficult. This is understandable considering 2020 has been different and the cost of production and supply chain including other issues, has bothered companies during the pandemic.

However, if POCO manages to follow the “Everything you need, Nothing You don’t” trend of F1, we feel that it has a chance to grab the attention back. Anyway, the team including Anju didn’t reveal anything apart from this.
