<p>A lot of spyware exploits have been brought to light over the past couple of months. As of late, Apple unveiled a new operating system update for the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/iPhone">iPhone</a> and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/iPad">iPad</a> to tackle a vulnerability that was being actively exploited by hackers. In a statement, Apple acknowledged that it had received a report on this matter, and took swift action to ensure that its devices remain secure. This kind of issue is taken very seriously by the company, and it is gratifying to see them moving quickly to address it.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/sebastian-bednarek-NuAamGgwymw-unsplash-1024x768.jpg?x44794" alt="Apple iPhone " class="wp-image-515313" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/sebastian-bednarek-NuAamGgwymw-unsplash-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/sebastian-bednarek-NuAamGgwymw-unsplash-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/sebastian-bednarek-NuAamGgwymw-unsplash-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/sebastian-bednarek-NuAamGgwymw-unsplash-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/sebastian-bednarek-NuAamGgwymw-unsplash-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/sebastian-bednarek-NuAamGgwymw-unsplash-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/sebastian-bednarek-NuAamGgwymw-unsplash-1068x801.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/sebastian-bednarek-NuAamGgwymw-unsplash-1920x1440.jpg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/sebastian-bednarek-NuAamGgwymw-unsplash-560x420.jpg 560w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/sebastian-bednarek-NuAamGgwymw-unsplash-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/sebastian-bednarek-NuAamGgwymw-unsplash-265x198.jpg 265w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The vulnerability in question was discovered by a researcher who has chosen to remain anonymous, and Citizen Lab played a critical role in helping Apple identify and respond to the issue. This digital rights research group, which operates out of the University of Toronto’s Munk School, has long been known for its efforts to expose the use of government hacking tools by organizations like the NSO Group.</p>

<p>It is worth noting that this vulnerability was in WebKit, which is Apple&#8217;s browser engine and has been a popular target for hackers due to the wide access it can provide to device data. However, it is reassuring to see that Apple has been working hard to tackle these kinds of vulnerabilities, with a recent count suggesting that there have been only a few bugs that may have been actively exploited since the start of the year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the average iPhone user is unlikely to be targeted by this kind of zero-day exploit, it is always wise to keep your device up to date and protected against potential threats. As always, Apple is committed to ensuring the security of its users and taking swift action in response to any security issues that arise.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://www.zdnet.com/article/ios-15-4-update-why-youre-asked-to-help-improve-siri-after-updating/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>ZDNet</em> </a>report, the bug first surfaced with iOS 15. It automatically enabled the &#8220;Improve Siri &amp; Dictation&#8221; settings that allowed the Cupertino based giant to record, store, and review users&#8217; interactions with its voice assistant. The iPhone maker told <em>ZDNet</em> that it has fixed this issue and has even deleted any recordings collected through this bug. Apple further added that it has turned off this feature for many users with the release of the latest iOS 15.2 update.</p>
<p>So, some users might receive a prompt that asks them for permission to enable the &#8220;Improve Siri &amp; Dictation.&#8221; The company stated that &#8220;With iOS 15.2, we turned off the Improve Siri &amp; Dictation setting for many Siri users while we fixed a bug introduced with iOS 15. This bug inadvertently enabled the setting for a small portion of devices. Since identifying the bug, we stopped reviewing and are deleting audio received from all affected devices.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-413073 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-inline.jpg?x44794" alt="Apple" width="5603" height="3735" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-inline.jpg 5603w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-inline-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-inline-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-inline-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-inline-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-inline-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-inline-630x420.jpg 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-inline-1920x1280.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 5603px) 100vw, 5603px" /></p>
<p>While the issue has been fixed, the company should also add a prompt that notifies users to keep their iPhones up to date, especially considering that the bug was related to privacy preferences. So we advise that iPhone users check if they have received the update and upgrade their devices to the latest build.</p>

<p>The American tech giant has just released the <a href="https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2021/09/29/announcing-windows-11-insider-preview-build-22468/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22468</a> to the Dev Channel. For those unaware, this channel is the testing forum where updates and features might arrive in the stable version of Windows 11 on October 5. The company stated that the new build offers a &#8220;good set of improvements and bug fixes&#8221; for those that follow the Dev Channel releases.</p>
<p>Notably, the company also highlighted two key improvements. Namely, users can now see stats regarding the connection when clicking on a VPN connection in VPN settings. Additionally, the update also adds an option to turn off showing recent searches when hovering over the Search icon in the Taskbar. You can find this option n the Taskbar behaviors in Taskbar Settings. This showcases Microsoft&#8217;s efforts in clean up its Windows 11 UI and other bugs prior to October 5 launch.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-397138 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Microsoft-windows-11.jpg?x44794" alt="Microsoft windows 11" width="1280" height="720" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Microsoft-windows-11.jpg 1280w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Microsoft-windows-11-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Microsoft-windows-11-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Microsoft-windows-11-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Microsoft-windows-11-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Microsoft-windows-11-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Microsoft-windows-11-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></p>
<p>The brand further added that &#8220;Some fixes noted here in Insider Preview builds from the active development branch may make their way into the servicing updates for the released version of Windows 11 after general availability on October 5th,&#8221; and that &#8220;These builds are also not matched to a specific release. New features and OS improvements from these builds could show up in future Windows releases when they&#8217;re ready, and we may deliver them as full OS updates or servicing release.&#8221;</p>

For those unaware, the Power Reserve mode allows users to see the time on the Apple Watch while preserving battery life. However, it shuts off the communication between users&#8217; wearable and their iPhone. In otehr words, various features and functionalities are unavailable in this mode.</p>
<p>Despite the fix being rolled out, the company also announced in the document that a &#8220;very small number” of the owners of these devices have &#8220;experienced an issue with their watch not charging after it enters Power Reserve.&#8221; The OEM stated that the watchOS 7.3.1 that was recently rolled out will help prevent &#8220;this issue from happening to other Apple Watch Series 5 or Apple Watch SE devices.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-362448 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Apple-Watch-SE-featured.jpg?x44794" alt="Apple Watch SE" width="395" height="376" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Apple-Watch-SE-featured.jpg 395w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Apple-Watch-SE-featured-300x286.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px" /></p>
<p>Unfortunately, this implies that those this would only prevent anyone from receiving this bug, and not help those that are already suffering from it. But, the company is ready with a solution. Users suffering from this issue can simply contact its official support team, for a mail in repair, which will be free of charge. Although, the device will be examined before the service to verify whether or not its eligible for the free repairs, as stated by the iPhone maker.</p>
