The Cadillac Optiq, soon to debut in China, has a story of its own. It shadows its sibling, the Lyriq, but flaunts a unique persona. These fresh photos, courtesy of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, show the Optiq in its powerful dual-motor AWD variant, the latest addition to the Ultium electric SUV lineup.

The Optiq is powered by a 143-kw front motor and 68-kw rear motor

At first glance, the Optiq might look identical to its single-motor RWD sibling. But dig a little deeper, and its character emerges. The new front grille with its diamond-cut triangular pattern and distinct lighting signature sets it apart from the crowd, especially the Sport trim painted in an eye-catching blue.

Size-wise, the Optiq is slightly more compact than the Lyriq, but that doesn’t mean it lacks punch. Powered by a 143-kW (192-hp) front motor and a 68-kW (91-hp) rear motor, it matches the Buick Electra E5 Avenir in output, revealing a shared technology under the GM umbrella.

What truly makes the Optiq fascinating is its strategic unveiling in China before potentially entering the US market. The collaboration between SAIC-GM and carefully filed patents hints at a broader strategy, positioning the Optiq not just as a product but as a symbol of innovation and adaptability.

In a market crowded with electric SUVs, the Optiq doesn’t just mirror its siblings; it offers a fresh voice. It’s not only about horsepower and wheelbase but also about creating a distinctive identity within a family.

As per a senior executive from the company, the new concept vehicle is a “reimagining the future of personal transportation.” The flying Cadillac from GM can only carry a single passenger and is technically more akin to a VTOL drone (Vertica Take off and Landing). It will be capable of flying from one urban rooftop to another and can reach speeds of up to 55 miles per hour as well.

The vehicle is fully autonomous and all electric and is powered by a 90KW motor. This battery is a GM Ultium battery back, which is housed in an ultra lightweight body with pairs of motors. The company unveiled the new concept car in a video as a part of its virtual keynote presentation, which had Chief Executive Mary Barra reveal the futuristic flying car along with a family friendly Cadillac electric shuttle.

Back in 2020, the senior executive had revealed that GM is exploring alternative methods of transportation, which included aerial taxis. GM design chief Mike Simcoe further added that “VTOL is key to GM’s vision for a multimodal future,” and he believes that the vehicle can be “the Cadillac of urban air mobility” as well. At the moment, no finer details regarding the vehicle are currently known, but the company did state that it is “arriving soon” with lounge like seating, biometric sensors, voice controls, and hand gesture support as well.

Car manufacturers are always playing with new ways for users to unlock their cars but Cadillac takes things to another level with its 2021 XT4 SUV. Just like several phones including the iPhone X and Mate 30 Pro, the Cadillac SUV supports face unlock. Yes, you read that right.

Cadillac has built cameras into the frame of the driver’s door. There are three cameras in total – 2 infrared cameras and an RGB camera. The carmaker says the system identifies up to 106 different facial features and will unlock the vehicle in 2 seconds.

The Cadillac XT4 can store up to 8 different users, one of which is the administrator that can add and delete users. The face unlock system will also work in the dark which is no surprise since it has infrared cameras. Cadillac is assuring users it will work both indoors and outdoors too.

Don’t want to use face unlock? No problem. The XT4 also has a fingerprint scanner or you can decide to unlock the vehicle with a PIN.

The Face Unlock feature seems to be exclusive to the Chinese model of the vehicle as there is no mention of it on the American page.
