OPPO is set to launch its highly anticipated Find X6 series on March 21st. The Find X6 Pro is expected to be the main attraction of the event, with leaked images showcasing a striking camera module design that is highly recognizable.

The Find X6 Pro camera module features an “Oreo” shape design with three cameras and an LED flash. The upper part of the housing is made of glass with a glossy finish, while the lower part is made of bare metal with a matte finish. This design choice is likely to improve recognition and distinguish the OPPO Find X6 Pro from other smartphones in the market.

The partnership between OPPO and Hasselblad, the Swedish camera manufacturer, is evident in the engraved logo in the middle of the camera module. The OPPO Find X6 Pro will also be powered by the MariSilicon X chip, further enhancing the camera performance of the device.

As reported by the blogger “Digital Chat Station,” the Find X6 Pro will house Sony IMX989 + IMX890 + IMX890 triple camera unit on the back. All these sensors have a megapixel count of 50. On the front, Find X6 Pro will feature a 32-megapixel Sony IMX709.

The OPPO Find X6 Pro will also feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen2 processor, and AnTuTu’s running score is expected to exceed 1.20 million points, making it a high-performing device. Under the hood, the device is expected to house a 5,000mAh battery with 100W wired and 50W wireless fast-charging support.

In addition to the Find X6 Pro, OPPO will also launch the Find X6 and the OPPO Pad 2, which will be powered by the latest MediaTek Dimensity 9200 chipset, and the OPPO Enco Free3 wireless headphones.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics, an electronic component manufacturing arm of the South Korean giant Samsung, is now considering to enter the mid-range smartphone camera module market. This was announced by the company during its second-quarter earnings call earlier this week, as reported by The Elec.

The company’s Vice President Bae Kwang-wook said that the company demand for camera modules of mid-range smartphones has been on the rise and it anticipates increased demand for the high-resolution sensors and optical zoom sensors.

He added that the company has been planning to enter this market for some time and it plans to compete based on the pricing of the module. Samsung Electro-Mechanics will likely provide high-resolution camera modules for the Samsung Galaxy A-series phones.

Interestingly, the announcement comes just a day after it was reported that Samsung Electro-Mechanics has secured a contract from Apple to supply camera parts as the US-based tech giant looks to diversify its supply chain.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics, which has supplied camera modules for premium smartphones such as Galaxy S- and Galaxy Note-series, could be entering the mid-range market because of the falling demand for premium phones.

In line with this, it is also being reported that the company could introduce Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), a premium feature, for the upcoming Galaxy A-series smartphones launching next year. It is also planning to offer differentiating features such as better optical zoom and slimmer design.

For the second quarter of this year, the company posted 96 billion won in operating profits and 1.8122 trillion won in revenue, which represents a decline of 41 percent and 5 percent, respectively compared to last year.

As the United States government continues to impose sanctions against Chinese companies, Apple is now looking to diversify its production and supply chain to reduce its dependence on the Chinese market.

In line with that, a new report coming from Korea claims that Samsung Electro-Mechanics has joined the list of suppliers of Apple for the camera parts. This seems like a major win for the Korean company, which counts Samsung Electronics as its core customer.

The report says that the reason behind Apple selecting Samsung Electro-Mechanics as a new camera lens supplier is to stabilize its supply chain and to reduce the cost. So far, Apple has sourced lenses from Lagan Precision and Genius Electronics.

It’s noteworthy that Samsung Electro-Mechanics has been supplying Laminated Ceramic Capacitors (MLCC) and Flexible Printed Circuit Boards (RF-PCB) to Apple, so the company isn’t totally new to Apple’s supply chain. But for the first time, it will be supplying lens to the company.

The report further goes on to add that LG Innotek, which has been supplying camera modules to Apple, is also looking to expand its position within Apple Camera SCM as the company is looking for diversification of suppliers.

The development comes after the U.S. Department of Commerce puts sanctions on 11 Chinese companies for suppressing ethnic minorities in China, including O-Film Tech which provides iPhone camera modules. Apple is now expected to shift orders from Ofilm Tech to LG Innotek, which is making camera modules in factories in Gumi and Vietnam.

Apple has recently started producing iPhone 11 in India through Foxconn’s facility near Chennai. It is also being reported that the next-generation AirPods, as well as 2021 AirPods Pro, will be made in Vietnam. The company has already shifted the production of AirPods Pro to Vietnam.

With each passing generation, smartphone vendors have been improving and, in certain cases, even raising the number of image sensors for their handset offerings. Now, a recent Samsung patent has revealed a new device that features a whopping 6 cameras on the rear, including a periscopic lens.

The South Korean tech giant applied for this patent back in December 2019 with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) which was published earlier this week on June 11. While the 6 sensor camera module is eye catching, the main aspect regarding this camera module is its tilting mechanism for its sensors. Look at the images in the patent, we can observe the image sensors being able to tilt.

According to the patent, the Samsung smartphone uses 5 wide angle image sensors with a 28mm focal length on the rear alongside a telephoto lens. These sensors are arranged horizontally with three on each row and an LED flash. In the normal mode, these cameras face the regular forward direction, but in the “active mode,” they can tilt towards the horizontally or vertically.

This enables the sensors to achieve a wider focal length overall and may even help in producing panoramic shots without moving the smartphone itself. Furthermore, the tilting lenses are also said to offer a ‘pano-bokeh effect,’ which implied blurred backgrounds on a panoramic image. This moving lens technology could also have the 5 wide angle sensors work simultaneously to offer a better image that is stitched together.

Unfortunately, this form of array cameras are still too expensive to mass produce, but do offer various advantages. An example being improved low light shots through the use of the array camera module. Regular images could also have a higher dynamic range and the bokeh effect could target more subjects individually as well.

The Samsung patent also goes in depth regarding the shortfalls of this system, with a notable one being the size of the camera module. Since it will be housed in a flagship device, the device may need to have a popup mechanism to house the sensor to achieve the movement, while maintaining thinness. Unfortunately, it is unknown if Samsung would actually develop and sell the device in the near future, but the technology does offer a glimpse into the future generations of smartphones.

The smartphone industry is growing at a tremendous pace and most of the growth is coming from China where there is a stiff competition among manufacturers. The competition has led to the release, in quick succession, of high -end smartphones packed with innovative features. If last year was the year of devices with 4GB of RAM and large batteries, this year perhaps will see the focus shifting to more sophisticated displays on flagships. The competition also drives a rise in demand for parts and other raw materials which are usually sourced from third party vendors in China, Taiwan, Japan and other countries.

The rise in demand for parts have been predicted to lead to shortage in parts or components used in the phones as the suppliers may not be able to meet the rising demand. This was made known by a source in Taiwan, one of the major supplier of smartphone components.

The source hinted that there is a rise in the production output of China-based brands, especially OPPO and Vivo, driven by global demands for China phones. The source also hinted that the drive by Chian-based brands to enhance their presence in the mid-range to high-end segment and a bi to ramp up their oversea shipment, ala Xiaomi, have all contributed to an increase in demand for smartphone components.

One component that will likely see shortagein its supply is OLED panels, according to the source. The rumor that Apple will likely use OLED panels on one version of its iPhone 8 has spurred a drive by the China-based smartphone makers and others to place orders for small and mid-size OLED panels, and this will likely cause a shortage in supplies of OLED panels in 2017. Apart from OLEDs, the supply of small and mid-size TFT LCD panels are also exected to remain tight this year as the display size have shifted from the previous 5 inches to 5.5 and 5.7 inches on the average. The demand for high-end camera modules and optical sensing devices are also expected to rise in 2017.

Lenovo announced the Moto Z earlier this month with hardware additions called Motomods. While it is still not the perfect definition of modular, it has set the bar higher for  manufacturers and done a better job than what LG released in place of the LG G5 and Friends. The mods connect to the phone via a set of 16 pin integrated magnets at the back of the phone. This is quite different from LG’s friends which require you to swap out the lower end of the phone which houses the removable battery before adding the desired hardware.

Some of the mods announced by Lenovo include a mini projector called Insta-Share Projector, a JBL Soundboost Speaker, and a mod that adds up to 22 hours more battery life.

However, rumors floating around states that Hasselblad, the Swedish company known for medium-format cameras is going to launch a pro camera mod for the Moto Z on Wednesday, 22nd of June.

This new mod is said to give the Moto Z a separate and more capable camera lens  to the device and differs from LG’s G5 CAM Module which only adds physical controls to the phone.

Like all rumors, you should remember to take this with a pinch of salt.
