Counterpoint Research has released a report on Canada Smartphone Market Q3 2020. According to it, the market grew 13% YoY, Apple and Samsung accounted for 86% of the entire sales, and carriers pushed more 5G devices.

Due to pent-up demand and back-to-school promotions, smartphone sales increased in the third quarter of 2020 in Canada. Online sales continued to remain strong despite consumers having begun to visit brick and mortar stores.

Talking about brands, Apple was the market leader with a 56% sell-through market share, followed by Samsung with a 33% share. The American tech giant’s sales improved by 7% YoY even though the iPhone 12 series launched in October. On the other hand, the South Korean tech giant grew by 21% YoY.

The government has delayed deciding which companies can supply equipment for 5G networks. On the other hand, Canada’s allies in the intelligence-sharing Five Eye group, which includes the US, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand have banned Huawei. Trudeau says that the government awaits recommendations from intelligence agencies.

In Canada, the company has started sending out trade-in kits to those who have pre-ordered the Pixel 4a smartphone on the launch date. The kit expires a month from when it was dispatched. Those who pre-ordered the phone have an expiration date in the first week of September, after which the old phone loses trade-in value.

However, the issue with this is that the company will start shipping the Pixel 4a smartphone to the buyers from 10th September, which means that it will reach customers somewhere around mid-September.

It seems that Google has messed up again with the logistics department given that the trade-in kit has an instruction document that shows how to transfer data from the older device to the new phone.

This seems limited to the Canadian market only because there have not been any such reports from other regions. Ideally, the trade-in kit should be received after the customers have got their hands on the new phone.

A new court document has revealed that the Canadian intelligence agency has given a warning regarding possible global “shock waves” caused by the arrest of the daughter of Huawei founder and CEO, Ren Zhengfei.

For those unaware, the founder’s daughter was arrested and detained in Vancouver with a request pending for a US extradition. The arrest for Meng Wanzhou was made in December 2018 with the involvement of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). This soured the diplomatic relations between Ottawa and Beijing. Meng is also the chief financial officer for Huawei in China.

The CSIS report that revealed the shock waves were recently disclosed in the court documents and were a part of Meng’s extradition proceedings. The planned event will be of great consequence internationally and bilaterally.”

According to the CEO of a major Canadian telecommunications, the equipment that Huawei provides is “Top Notch.” The statement addresses the telecommunications equipment the popular smartphone manufacturer provides in the region which is helping in bringing 5G networking.

Mirko Bibic, the CEO of Montreal based BCE, stated that the company has been a “great partner” in an interview earlier this week. Notably, the opinions of the senior executive arrive as the Canadian Government is debating the decision that revolves around whether or not the Chinese company is allowed in being a major partner for the development plans.

Since Meng Wanzhou, the CFO of Huawei, was arrested back in December 2018 in Canada, the tensions between the two regions have been on the rise. At one point, the Chinese authorities had even terminated Canadian agricultural imports of a sizable amount of 5 billion CAD (roughly 3.8 billion US Dollars). Furthermore, the current Prime Minister of Canada has stated that the decision of allowing Huawei to operate in the country should be a non-political one.

Many western regions including certain countries in Europe are also facing a similar dilemma of allowing Huawei to operate in their home countries. Amid of diplomatic crisis between Canada and China due to Huawei Telecom, the Canadian telecom operator is joining hands with Huawei. ABC Communications has partnered with the Huawei to test broadband in the rural areas of western British Columbia. Currently, the Canada telecom will test the service within a small area and then will expand to more regions.

It is quite surprising that on one hand, the Canadian government is taking a tough stance against Huawei. But country’s telecom player, ABC communication is making a new deal with Huawei for expanding its broadband reach across the country. Speaking on occasion, Eric Li, president of Huawei Canada has welcomed the move. He said in a statement that the company was “proud to provide a solution to this unique Canadian challenge” in the announcement.

Recently, in a US-China trade War, Canada made an entry by arresting Huawei’s CFO Meng Wanzhou from Vancouver airport at the request of American Authorities. Since then, China has been finding ways to take on Canada. Although, the home country of Huawei has arrested two Canadians and sentenced one of them to the death penalty under an apparent act of retaliation.

Huawei has received a lot of flak in the past few months as the US and its allies have excluded the company from 5G networking plans. Various countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and others have banned Huawei for participating in 5G plans. Though, Canada is now reconsidering about its stance on Huawei’s inclusion in the new era networking plans.

Whatever the thing is, this new partnership is a step ahead in providing faster speed internet in the rural areas. It will also serve the Canadian Government’s task to increase overall internet speed in rural Canada. Earlier, Canada planned to trade rural internet services for the 5G networks in Cities, but now there will be some other model to serve the purpose.
