<h2>India&#8217;s Smartphone Market Overcomes Obstacles in 2023</h2>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a> led the market in the fourth quarter with a 20% share, shipping 7.6 million units, followed by Xiaomi with 7.2 million units. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vivo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vivo</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/realme/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Realme</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OPPO</a> were also among the top five brands. For the entire year, Samsung remained at the top, although its market share slightly declined by 1%. Vivo and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xiaomi</a> followed, with Vivo showing a small growth and Xiaomi experiencing a decline. Realme and OPPO completed the top five, both seeing a decrease in their shipments.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="506" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Indian-smartphone-market-2023.png?x96852" alt="Indian smartphone market" class="wp-image-599512" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Indian-smartphone-market-2023.png 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Indian-smartphone-market-2023-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Indian-smartphone-market-2023-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Indian-smartphone-market-2023-696x391.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Indian-smartphone-market-2023-747x420.png 747w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure></div>

<p>The market&#8217;s resilience in 2023 was bolstered by improved consumer confidence and strong performance during the festive season, despite facing challenges like inventory issues and inflation. A noteworthy trend was the significant growth in the premium smartphone segment, driven by brands like Apple and Samsung offering new models and attractive financing options.</p>

<p>Canalys Senior Analyst Sanyam Chaurasia highlighted the success of brands like Xiaomi and Realme in expanding their offline presence and balancing their shipment channels. The market saw a rise in offline shipments for these brands, contributing significantly to their overall sales.</p>

<p>5G <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/smartphones/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smartphones</a> played a crucial role in the market, with affordable models driving growth. Canalys anticipates that the Indian smartphone market will continue to grow in 2024, fueled by reasonably priced <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/5g/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">5G</a> phones and a replacement cycle from the pandemic period. However, rising material costs pose a challenge for manufacturers.</p>

<p>Technology continues to change our habits, including our cars. For example, the vehicles we own today come with features like electric engines, driving assistance, and even self-driving capabilities. A recent study by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/canalys/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Canalys</a> revealed the scale of this transformation, showing that multi-screen smart cockpits are becoming the standard in China&#8217;s electric vehicles, with an adoption rate of 82.7%. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>Multi-screen smart cockpits to become standard in China&#8217;s electric vehicles</strong></h2>

<p>According to the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/canalys-report/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Canalys report</a>, multi-screen smart cockpits are becoming the standard in China&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/electric-vehicle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electric vehicles</a>. In the first quarter of 2023, the market penetration rate of smart cockpits in China reached 82.7%, higher than the global average of 74.3%. The report found that mainstream joint venture brands are relatively conservative in their transition to smart cockpits, with an overall penetration rate of 55.1%. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-electric-vehicle-smart-cockpits-1024x576.jpg?x96852" alt="electric vehicle cockpit" class="wp-image-561971" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-electric-vehicle-smart-cockpits-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-electric-vehicle-smart-cockpits-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-electric-vehicle-smart-cockpits-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-electric-vehicle-smart-cockpits-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-electric-vehicle-smart-cockpits-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-electric-vehicle-smart-cockpits-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-electric-vehicle-smart-cockpits.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Luxury brands, on the other hand, are actively investing in smart cockpits and have achieved high penetration rates. According to the report, 90% of EVs sold in China in the first quarter of 2023 had a display screen of 10 inches or larger, with 12-15.9-inch screens accounting for 74.1% of the market.</p>

<p>Analysis by Canalys found that of the top 10 EV brands in China by sales (with a market share of 70.6%), only Wuling, which focuses on the entry-level market (less than 80,000 yuan), and some entry-level low-end models from BYD and Chery do not have a display. Multi-screen displays are more common in domestic EV brands, while only Mercedes-Benz and Porsche among luxury brands have adopted multi-screen displays. </p>

<p>Currently, only four brands, including SAIC Zhiji, BAIC Arcfox, Cadillac, and NIO, use displays of 18 inches or larger. Canalys said that the rapid adoption of multi-screen smart cockpits in China is driven by a number of factors, including the increasing popularity of EVs, the growing demand for intelligent driving and entertainment features, and the falling cost of display technology.</p>

In the figures shared, it was observed that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi</a> stood out by achieving the highest growth percentage in comparison to other major brands like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei</a> and more.</p>
<p>According to the analysis, the Chinese tech giant shipped 33 million smartphone units in Q4 of 2019, a notable jump over just 26.8 million from 2018. The figures also accounted for Xiaomi having a 9 percent market share over 7.3 percent back in 2018. This marks an overall annual growth of 23 percent, which also made Xiaomi the only company with a double digit growth rate in the list with other major OEMs.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_303059" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-303059" style="width: 780px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-303059 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/table-1_image.jpg?x96852" alt="Xiaomi" width="780" height="678" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/table-1_image.jpg 780w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/table-1_image-300x261.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/table-1_image-768x668.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/table-1_image-696x605.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/table-1_image-483x420.jpg 483w" sizes="(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-303059" class="wp-caption-text">Global Smartphone Market Growth Rate for Q4 2019 (Image Via Canalys)</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>Furthermore, the report also revealed the overall annual market share which had Samsung come out in the lead with a market share of 21.8 percent in 2019. Huawei arrived at a close second with 17.6 percent while Apple and Xiaomi took third and fourth positions with 14.5 percent and 9.2 percent respectively. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Oppo</a> falls just behind Xiaomi and has a market share of 8.8 percent, according to Canalys&#8217; 2019 market share report.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/01/30/scientists-developed-a-bandage-that-can-save-thousands-of-lives-by-diagnosing-bacterial-infection-by-changing-colors-and-help-prevent-antibiotic-resistance/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Scientists develop a bandage that can diagnose bacterial infection by changing colors, helps prevent antibiotic resistance</a></strong></h6>
<p>As seen in the report, Apple outperformed expectations after its iPhone 11 series weer successful beyond analysts&#8217; expectations. This caused the Cupertino-based giant to have the highest market share with 21.3 percent in Q4 2019. But unlike Xiaomi with its sizeable 23 percent annual growth rate over 2018, other OEMs barely came close.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_303060" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-303060" style="width: 759px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-303060 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/table-2_image.jpg?x96852" alt="Xiaomi" width="759" height="641" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/table-2_image.jpg 759w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/table-2_image-300x253.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/table-2_image-696x588.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/table-2_image-497x420.jpg 497w" sizes="(max-width: 759px) 100vw, 759px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-303060" class="wp-caption-text">Global Smartphone Market Share and Annual Growth for 2019</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>Apple saw a healthy 9 percent growth but Samsung and Oppo saw a meagre 1 percent and 2 percent growth respectively. On the other hand, Huawei&#8217;s growth saw a decline rather than growth of negative 7 percent. This is likely due to its increasing fiction with the US Government and rising difficulties in other European regions for 5G development.</p>

This is contained in the latest report by market research firm Canalys.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/huawei-p10-10/" rel="attachment wp-att-128425"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-128425" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/huawei-p10.jpg?x96852" alt="huawei p10" width="600" height="375" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/huawei-p10.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/huawei-p10-300x188.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>The analytic data shows that Huawei shipped about 21 million smartphones in the quarter spanning January to March and this amounted to an 18% market share. No doubt, the P10 and P10 Plus accounted for a good proportion of this amount. On the other hand, OPPO fell to second place despite a strong annual growth of 55%. The BBK subsidiary shipped just under 20 million units in Q1 2017. Fellow BBK subsidiary, Vivo, still made it into the top 3 in the domestic market, capturing a 15% share of the market with 17 million units shipped.</p>
<p>Canalys noted that China’s smartphone market saw an increase in shipments by over 9% year on year this quarter which shows the market continues its growth. But a worrisome trend is the seeming consolidation of the market noticeable by the fact that the top three phone makers accounted for more than 50% of shipments for the first time ever this quarter. Last year Q1, Huawei led the market, while Vivo was second and OPPO fourth but they all accounted for 42% of the market. In case you are wondering who occupied the third spot, Xiaomi did, but has since fallen to fifth behind Apple, with just over 9 million units shipped in Q1 2017.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/03/23/show-love-mother-nature-with-oppo-r9s-fresh-green-limited-edition/oppo-r9s-green-5/" rel="attachment wp-att-123650"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-123650" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/OPPO-R9s-Green-5.jpg?x96852" alt="" width="610" height="406" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/OPPO-R9s-Green-5.jpg 610w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/OPPO-R9s-Green-5-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px" /></a></p>

<p>Xiaomi&#8217;s bid to recapture the top 3 spots is seriously threatened as it faces increasing pressure from Huawei’s online efforts with Honor, as well as OPPO and Vivo, whose marketing activities have been taking attention away from Xiaomi. Xiaomi&#8217; plans to open up more offline stores is underway and even at that, Huawei plans to increase investment in its offline channel this year. There is no doubt that whatever plan Xiaomi has got, it has to execute them fast in order to still have any chance of making it up the top 3.</p>
<p>In all, Canalys estimates that a total of 114 million smartphones were shipped in China in the first quarter ending 31 March 2017.</p>
