The LG G8X ThinQ Dual Screen and LG V50 ThinQ Dual Screen ship with a case that has a similar display as the phone itself. When attached, you have a dual-screen phone which offers a whole lot of functions. Now, there is a product called the castAway Case being crowdfunded on Indiegogo which brings a similar function to several more phones.

The castAway Case does provide your phone with an extra screen but it differs from LG’s take in one major way, and that is its ability to function as a standalone device. castAway runs Chrome OS and is powered by the OP1 processor which powers Chrome OS tablets such as the Acer Chromebook Tab 10. There is 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It also has a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP selfie camera. The built-in 35 Whr battery can also supply power to your phone.

The company behind the castAway case includes top executives from Deel, Microsoft, and Intel. To use the CastAway case, you attach your phone to the device and connect over an encrypted WiFi channel. Then launch an app on both devices called MultiTask+. This app is what allows you to use multiple apps at the same time and copy and paste content between both screens. You can also use one screen as a virtual keyboard and trackpad.

The case comes in two versions – the castAway One with a 5.8-inch screen and the castAway One Plus with a 6.3-inch screen. The castAway case works with the following iPhones – 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, X, XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max. It also works with the following Android phones which are actually only Samsung Galaxy phones – S7, S8, S8+, S9, S9+, S10, S10+, Note 7, Note 8, Note 9, and Note 10. The Indiegogo page says you can send an email if your device is not on the list.

The castAway case will begin shipping in May 2020 if it meets its crowdfunding goal of $50,000. As at the time of writing, it has crossed $30,000. Early backers can pay as low as $129 for the castAway One or $139 for the castAway OnePlus. The original price for the small case is $249 while the bigger one is $269.
