<p>Wireless charging is getting more and more popular these days. We can see this technology it in our phones and even things like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/airpods/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AirPods</a>. However, when we look at the usage rates, the numbers suddenly start to drop suddenly. This is mostly because wireless charging isn&#8217;t truly &#8216;wireless&#8217;. Your device needs to touch a charging pad, and that can be harder than just using a USB-C or Lightning cable. However, engineers at Aalto University have developed a new system that can fix this. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>Aalto University Researchers Develop Long-Distance Wireless Charging System </strong></h2>

<p>As mentioned above, currently, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/wireless-charging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wireless charging</a> requires a device to be placed on a pad or dock, which isn&#8217;t much more convenient than wired charging. For example, even though I have a wireless charging pad and my phone supports this technology, I almost never use it. Experts aware of this situation aim to achieve truly wireless charging without the need for contact with any surface.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1280" height="720" data-id="553568" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/true-wireless-charging.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-553568" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/true-wireless-charging.jpg 1280w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/true-wireless-charging-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/true-wireless-charging-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/true-wireless-charging-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/true-wireless-charging-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/true-wireless-charging-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/true-wireless-charging-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></figure>
</figure>

<p>Current <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/wireless-charging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wireless charging technologies</a> use magnetic induction to transfer power over short distances, but this limits the range of the charger and the amount of power that can be transferred. Of course, it is possible to increase this range. However, the efficiency of wireless charging decreases rapidly as the distance between the power source and the receiver grows. That&#8217;s why researchers have been working for some time to find a way to increase the range without sacrificing efficiency. Now, engineers at Aalto University have created a new system that could allow for more efficient wireless power transmission over longer distances.</p>

<p>Before going into more detail, it&#8217;s worth noting that this isn&#8217;t the work of a company like Apple or Xiaomi. Therefore, there isn&#8217;t a product you can buy in the near future. In fact, there isn&#8217;t even a product at all. The Aalto team has merely developed a new dynamic theory. While this is indeed a significant step and some tests have been conducted, it is still only a research study. However, it&#8217;s also good to remember that such studies are the foundation of all modern technologies.</p>

<p>The team tested the idea using two loop antennas, each 7.2 cm (2.8 in) wide. By tweaking the currents in the antennas, they were able to suppress the radiation resistance in the loops and increase the efficiency. Even when placed 18 cm apart, the power transfer efficiency remained high at over 80%. Here is the statement of the Aalto research team on the subject:</p>

<p>“We wanted to balance effectively transferring power with the radiation loss that always happens over longer distances,” said Nam Ha-Van, lead author of the study. “It turns out that when the currents in the loop antennas have equal amplitudes and opposite phases, we can cancel the radiation loss, thus boosting efficiency.”</p>

<p>You probably didn&#8217;t think that 18 cm was much, which isn&#8217;t really a great distance. But as we said, this is only the first step in technology and it is likely that it will near perfection in the future. This could have a big effect on how we use our gadgets. Especially when you consider that companies like Apple and Samsung have removed the charger from the box for some products like phones. So, what are your thoughts on this topic? Do you use wireless charging technology in your daily life?</p>

<p>In a move that could further unify charging standards for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/electric-vehicle">electric vehicles</a> in North America, Volkswagen is reportedly in talks with Tesla to adopt its North America Charging Standard (NACS) technology.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s noteworthy that the charging network unit of the German carmaker, Electrify America, which plans to expand its network to 1,700 stations by 2025, has already agreed to adopt the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/nacs">NACS</a> port.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/VW-Car-Charging-1024x576.png?x44794" alt="Volkswagen Car Charging" class="wp-image-548150" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/VW-Car-Charging-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/VW-Car-Charging-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/VW-Car-Charging-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/VW-Car-Charging-1536x864.png 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/VW-Car-Charging-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/VW-Car-Charging-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/VW-Car-Charging-747x420.png 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/VW-Car-Charging.png 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>For those who are unaware, NACS is a proprietary charging connector developed by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tesla">Tesla</a> and is currently used on the company&#8217;s Supercharger network, which is the largest fast-charging network in North America, available at more than 12,000 locations across the continent.</p>

<p>It is a single-port charging system that has support for both AC and DC charging. Compared to the Combined Charging System (CCS) connector, the NACS connector is about half the size and twice as powerful.</p>

<p>The development comes days after <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/06/28/volvo-tesla-nacs-charging-north-america/">Volvo announced</a> that it would adopt NACS for its electric vehicles in the North American market. If the deal with Volkswagen goes through, it will be a boost for Tesla, which has been criticized for its closed charging system, making it difficult for other automakers to integrate their vehicles with the Supercharger network.</p>

<p>As of now, it&#8217;s not clear when <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/volkswagen">Volkswagen</a> and Tesla will reach an agreement on NACS, but the engagement in talks between these companies is a positive sign for the unification of charging standards.</p>

The company regularly launches a new version of the AirPods to remain the market leader.</p>
<p>The company is expected to launch the second-generation of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-airpods-pro">Apple AirPods Pro</a> later this year but ahead of that, some key details about the Apple AirPods lineup&#8217;s charging case have surfaced online.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-306325 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Apple-AirPods-Pro.jpg?x44794" alt="Apple AirPods Pro" width="500" height="500" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Apple-AirPods-Pro.jpg 500w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Apple-AirPods-Pro-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Apple-AirPods-Pro-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Apple-AirPods-Pro-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /></p>
<p>As <a href="https://twitter.com/mingchikuo/status/1556996472109150208">per the latest report</a> from analyst Ming Chi-Kuo, all the Apple AirPods models will come with a charging case having a USB Type-C for charging. So far, the company is offering its own proprietary Lightning port on the AirPods case.</p>
<p>It is not yet known if the upcoming Apple AirPods Pro, which is expected to go official in the coming months, will feature a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/usb-c">USB-C port</a> or not. There are rumors indicating that Apple may launch a case with USB-C next year for the AirPods Pro.</p>
<p>For those who are unaware, Apple is also expected to offer <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/06/08/apple-iphones-usb-c-eu-enforces-standard-2024/">USB-C charging port on all the Apple iPhone models</a> coming in 2023, along with all the iPad models. This is because of the ruling by European Union making USB-C the standard charging port for all devices.</p>

While the company has not advertised this, a test <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byIt3SmVfyg">conducted by ChargerLAB</a> reveals that the iPhone 13 Pro Max is capable of charging at up to 27W speed.</p>
<p>As per the test, the Apple iPhone 13 Pro, when charged with a 30W or higher USB-C power adopter, can be charged at up to 27W speed. For comparison, the last year&#8217;s iPhone 12 Pro Max has a top charging speed of 21W to 22W.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-415887 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Display.jpeg?x44794" alt="Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max Display" width="1600" height="947" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Display.jpeg 1600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Display-300x178.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Display-768x455.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Display-1024x606.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Display-696x412.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Display-1068x632.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Display-710x420.jpeg 710w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<p>However, it&#8217;s noteworthy that the iPhone 13 Pro Max doesn&#8217;t sustain peak 27W power for the entire charging cycle due to heat considerations but the interesting part is that the device is able to get charged at a slightly faster rate than its predecessor.</p>
<p>The charging test was conducted on the Pro Max model only so we are not sure if the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-13-pro/">iPhone 13 Pro</a> also supports up to 27W charging. Whatever be the case, it practically doesn&#8217;t make any significant difference.</p>
<p>Apple is no longer offering a charger in the retail box when a customer purchases the new iPhone but the company is selling a 30W <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/usb-c">USB-C</a> power adapter at a price of $49 for anyone who doesn&#8217;t have an existing USB-C charger.</p>
<p>The 27W charging speed for the latest iPhone series is still no match when compared to the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/65w">65W fast charging</a> support offered by several Android smartphone manufacturers. Some companies are also offering 120W charging and the 200W charging, which has already been unveiled by a couple of brands, is set to debut commercially next year.</p>

<p>The Google Pixel 6 Pro has passed through Taiwan&#8217;s regulatory body National Communications Commission (NCC) and it reveals that the phone will support these charging speeds &#8212; 5V/3A (15W), 9V/2A (18W), 9V/3A (27W), and 11V/3A (33W). This was first <a href="https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-6-pro-33w-wired-charging/">reported</a> by <em>XDA-Developers</em>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-403573 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured.jpg?x44794" alt="Google Pixel 6 series featured" width="4096" height="4096" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured.jpg 4096w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-696x696.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-1068x1068.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-420x420.jpg 420w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-1920x1920.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 4096px) 100vw, 4096px" /></p>
<p>This new report is in line with the previous report which claimed that the Pixel 6 series smartphone will have a top charging speed of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/33w-charging">33W</a>. This is a significant improvement in the charging speed compared to the previous generation models which were limited to 18W.</p>
<p>Google has also hinted that the Pixel 6 series smartphones <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/08/18/google-pixel-6-series-smartphones-to-come-without-a-charger-in-the-box/">won&#8217;t come with a charger in the box</a>. So, there&#8217;s no cost to the company as it won&#8217;t be bundling the 33W power adapter and the search engine giant will be selling the charger separately.</p>
<p>Many flagship smartphones these days, especially the ones from Chinese brands, comes with support for much faster charging. Currently, the top charging speed for a flagship smartphone is 120W but <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/200w">200W wired charging technology</a> has already been announced and is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/08/12/xiaomi-200w-fast-charging-mi-mix-5-2022/">expected</a> to be available in smartphones from next year.</p>
<p>However, the charging speed reported for the Pixel 6 series falls in line with the charging speed of smartphones from Samsung and Apple. The South Korean giant offers 45W top speed on its device while Apple&#8217;s iPhone 13 lineup has support for up to 25W charging.</p>
<p>The Pixel 6 comes with a 6.4-inch Full HD+ display offering a 90Hz refresh rate while the Pro model has a 6.7-inch QHD+ display offering a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/120hz">120Hz refresh rate</a>. The standard model features a dual-camera setup on the back while the Pixel 6 Pro has a triple-camera setup — a wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 4x telephoto lens.</p>
<p>The photography performance is expected to top the charts as the chipset is said to be focused on photo output and uses <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/ai">artificial intelligence</a> along with machine learning.</p>
<p>The highlight of the Pixel 6 series remains its processor as the phones will come powered by Google’s own chipset — <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/09/15/fresh-google-tensor-specs-surface-and-it-isnt-as-powerful-as-expected/">Tensor</a>. Apart from on-device AI and ML capability, the chip is also claimed to have significant improvement in translation, captioning, and dictation. The chipset is likely to be an unreleased <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> Exynos 9855 SoC.</p>

To solve this battery issue, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/oneplus-2/">OnePlus</a> has unveiled a new feature coming soon to their devices called “Optimized Charging.”</p>
<p>So, what exactly does Optimized Charging do and how does it help? Well, when you put your OnePlus phone to charge before going to bed, it will refill its power cell to 80 percent of its maximum capacity and then temporarily stop. A hundred minutes before you usually wake up, your first alarm or event of the day, the phone will then charge to full.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>EDITOR’S PICK: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/01/08/mediatek-dimensity-800-with-integrated-5g-modem-for-low-priced-phones-announced/">MediaTek Dimensity 800 with integrated 5G modem for low priced phones announced</a></strong></h6>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-299630" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/software-optimized-charging.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="727" height="372" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/software-optimized-charging.jpg 727w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/software-optimized-charging-300x154.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/software-optimized-charging-696x356.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px" /></p>
<p>According to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/01/06/masterlu-smooth-smartphone-ui-ranking/">OnePlus</a>, while charging technology has changed, batteries themselves have not changed at all in terms of chemical substances. The only way to charge a battery fast is to increase either the voltage or, in OnePlus’ case, the current that comes from the charger. While now generally safe, fast charging can lead to faster degradation of the battery cells, especially when left plugged in at 100%. Optimized Charging hopes to help with that.</p>
<p>If you have access to a OnePlus 7 or OnePlus 7 Pro and the company&#8217;s Open Beta software, you check out the feature by pulling down the notification shade on your phone, tapping the cog icon to launch the Settings app and then tapping on the &#8220;Battery&#8221; heading. You&#8217;ll then see a toggle to turn on Optimized Charging. If you try it, tell us how it turns out.</p>

<p>Almost every part of the new age phone has seen some kind of upgrade for a better experience, but I am sure many would agree that battery life is still one of the biggest issues among smartphones today. Of course, there are large battery phones, but sometimes even they don&#8217;t as last long as you want.</p>
<p>Then, there&#8217;s the option of a powerbank, which almost all heavy smartphone users seem to resort to nowadays. But that may not be ideal for many, given that you have to carry an additional gadget around (which weighs a bit) and then there&#8217;s the possibility you forget to bring one in your bag or worse, you forget to charge the powerbank itself. For people, who always seem to be struggling with their smartphone&#8217;s battery life, AnkerBox seems to have come up with a solution.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_77724" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-77724" style="width: 738px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-77724 size-full" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/ankerbox-rent-charging-service.png?x44794" alt="ankerbox-rent-charging-service" width="738" height="482" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/ankerbox-rent-charging-service.png 738w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/ankerbox-rent-charging-service-300x196.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/ankerbox-rent-charging-service-600x392.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-77724" class="wp-caption-text">ankerbox</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>We have seen Chinese companies come up with some innovative ideas in the past, but this one&#8217;s unique. AnkerBox aims to provide charging-as-a-service. Yes, you heard it right, this company thinks that providing a charging station for your smartphone at a small cost is a great idea. It&#8217;s literally renting the charging for your smartphone.</p>
<p>So how does it work? Well, AnkerBox (a subsidiary company of Anker) will install its AnkerBox Charging stations (filled with many 6700mAh Anker powerbanks) in prime locations like malls, stores, cafes etc, where you can go and charge your phone. The idea is simple, you install the special app for this service and go ahead and rent a powerbank on the Ankerbox. You can get up to 30 minutes of free charging for your phone. But if you want more charge, you can take one of the many Anker powerbanks in the Ankerbox for a rent of $1.99 per day. If you want to go a step further, you can keep the powerbank for yourself, by paying $30. Pretty neat, right?</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-77723" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/ankerbox_backpack-charging.jpg?x44794" alt="ankerbox_backpack-" width="738" height="492" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/ankerbox_backpack-charging.jpg 738w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/ankerbox_backpack-charging-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/ankerbox_backpack-charging-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px" /></p>
<p>This idea could potentially solve the problem of dead batteries on smartphones when you are out, but its success really depends on how well consumers find it useful.</p>
<p>Initially, AnkerBoxes will be installed in over 200 gyms, bars, stores in the city of Seattle. For now, there&#8217;s no information about availability in other cities/ countries. But if it works well, expect such boxes to come to your favorite bars and stores.</p>
<p>So, what do you think? Does it sound like a good idea to you?</p>

<p id="news_title">Although the rumors said that the reversible Lighting-USB data cable will be used for iPhone 6, it still is doubtful. However, a third supplier named <strong>Moca.co leaked the USB exclusive charging point for them. Nevertheless, Moca.co also explained that, though the MFi certificate for the adapter was obtained, while still no orders have been made from Apple. </strong>That means, it is possible that the new data cable will not be presented with iPhone 6.</p>
