Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has issued a strong warning about the future of artificial intelligence. He said that if DeepSeek’s upcoming AI model runs entirely on Huawei chips, it could be a “horrible outcome” for the United States. His concern is that global AI systems may start shifting away from US technology, which could weaken America’s leadership in this space.

DeepSeek V4 Could Change the Game

The upcoming DeepSeek V4 model, expected later this month, is already creating buzz. Reports suggest it could run on Huawei’s Ascend chips, marking a major shift from the current reliance on Nvidia GPUs. However, some signs indicate it may still support Nvidia’s latest Blackwell architecture. If DeepSeek fully moves to Huawei hardware, it would be the first major AI model to break away from the US ecosystem.

China’s Different Approach to AI

Huawei’s chips are still considered slightly behind US alternatives in raw power. But China is focusing on a different strategy. Instead of relying on the most advanced chips, companies are using more chips together and improving software efficiency. Techniques like Mixture-of-Experts help boost performance without needing the best hardware.

Strength in Scale and Resources

China has key advantages that support this approach. It has a large pool of AI talent and access to cheaper energy. This allows companies to run massive computing setups. Even with weaker chips, using many processors at once can deliver strong results.

Rising Tensions and Policy Pressure

The situation is becoming more complex due to growing US–China tensions. Lawmakers in the US are pushing for stricter restrictions on Chinese AI firms. At the same time, some chip supply decisions suggest partial easing, showing mixed signals from policymakers.

This is no longer just about hardware power. The real battle is shifting toward software, efficiency, and ecosystem control. If DeepSeek succeeds with Huawei chips, it could mark a turning point in global AI, potentially reshaping who leads the industry in the coming years.

A new set of industry reports shows that Chinese open-source large language models (LLMs) are reshaping the global AI landscape. Once considered secondary players, Chinese models have now reached almost 30% of worldwide usage and are gaining traction among developers, startups, and major companies in the U.S.

Explosive Growth in Global Adoption

Chinese open-source models grew from just 1.2% of global usage in late 2024 to nearly 30% in 2025, according to a study covering 100 trillion tokens. While Western proprietary systems such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o and GPT-5 still dominate with about 70% market share, Chinese models now match the usage of all other non-Chinese open-source models combined.

Key drivers include Alibaba’s Qwen series, DeepSeek V3, and Moonshot AI’s Kimi K2, all of which have seen rapid update cycles and widespread adoption among developers worldwide.

Strong Endorsements From Silicon Valley

Several high-profile U.S. technology leaders are publicly shifting toward Chinese LLMs. Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said the company prefers Alibaba’s Qwen because it is “fast and cheap.” Investor Chamath Palihapitiya also moved key workflows to Moonshot’s Kimi K2, calling it more performant than alternatives.

On platforms such as Hugging Face and OpenRouter, Chinese models now dominate trending charts and usage rankings, replacing many U.S. systems.

Why Startups Prefer Chinese AI

Cost is a major factor. Chinese models often operate at one-fifth the price of Western models. MiniMax’s M2, for instance, offers performance similar to Claude Sonnet 4.5 at just 8% of the cost.

Open-weight licensing is another benefit, allowing companies to access model weights, fine-tune systems, and build custom versions more easily than with closed U.S. models. Alibaba reports more than 170,000 derivative models built on Qwen alone.

Geopolitical Concerns and Regulatory Tensions

The surge of Chinese AI tools has sparked debate in Washington. U.S. authorities warn of potential security risks associated with foreign AI systems, placing firms such as Zhipu AI on trade blacklists. Analysts say the rise of Chinese open-source AI could challenge long-standing U.S. dominance if current trends continue.

Despite concerns, a recent global survey shows 82% of users would adopt Chinese models if hosted outside China, indicating broad openness to using these systems.

China’s Infrastructure Advantage Raises Alarms

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently warned that China’s ability to build AI infrastructure “at unbelievable speed” is a strategic advantage. He noted that China has double the energy capacity of the U.S., with much faster growth.

Massive nationwide data-center construction, supported by low-cost energy and government initiatives, is accelerating the country’s AI expansion.

Rapidly Shifting AI Balance

With competitive performance, lower prices, and fast iteration, Chinese models are becoming central to global AI development. Industry experts say the momentum marks a shift toward a two-superpower AI race, with China emerging as a formidable peer to the United States.

It will provide expert-level responses and improved AI assistance for complex tasks through its tool-calling capabilities. The chatbot also supports multimodal input and output, making interactions more flexible. Deep Search will be available on ERNIE Bot’s official website, with mobile access coming soon. Free access to this feature will also start on April 1.

ERNIE Bot’s growth and popularity

As of November 2024, ERNIE Bot had 430 million users, with daily API calls exceeding 1.5 billion. The API usage has grown 30 times compared to 2023, showing its increasing popularity. While OpenAI’s ChatGPT is not officially available in China, many users access it through VPNs. ChatGPT is praised for its natural Chinese responses. However, ERNIE Bot remains the leading AI chatbot in China due to its wide user base and corporate adoption.

Censorship and regulatory compliance

ERNIE Bot follows China’s censorship policies and avoids sensitive political discussions. In contrast, ChatGPT’s responses are widely shared on Chinese social media. Baidu ensures that ERNIE Bot complies with regulatory guidelines while still offering powerful AI capabilities.

China’s smart robotics industry is growing at an impressive pace. As of December 2024, the country has registered 451,700 companies in the sector, with a total capital of 6.44 trillion yuan ($884.27 billion). Since 2020, the number of firms has increased by 206.73%, showing a steady upward trend. Even in the past year alone, the industry has grown by 19.39%, signaling strong demand and investment in robotics technology.

China’s industry and regional Robotics landscape

Most of China’s smart robotics firms operate in scientific research, technical services, IT, and wholesale sectors, making up nearly 80% of the industry. Geographically, the eastern region of China, dominates the landscape, hosting over two-thirds of all robotics enterprises. This area is known as the “golden cluster zone” due to its advanced research and development facilities. Meanwhile, the central and northwestern regions also maintain a solid presence, accounting for 15.33% and 14.97% of enterprises, respectively.

Several countries have taken action against DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) platform, over concerns related to national security, data privacy, and possible links to the Chinese government. Authorities fear that DeepSeek could pose a security risk due to its origins and the potential for data transfers to Chinese state entities.

National Security and Data Privacy Risks

DeepSeek has been banned in multiple countries primarily due to security and privacy concerns. Governments worry that the Chinese government could access user data collected by DeepSeek under China’s National Intelligence Law. There are concerns over the platform’s lack of transparency in handling user data, raising fears of possible data breaches or unauthorized data sharing.

Which countries have banned DeepSeek

Australia
Australia has banned DeepSeek on all government devices due to national security risks. The Department of Home Affairs ordered all government agencies to remove DeepSeek, with Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke emphasizing that the ban aims to protect Australia’s national interests.

South Korea
South Korea has prohibited its use on government employees’ devices across multiple ministries and state-run agencies due to security and privacy concerns. Several government agencies, including Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, have blocked AI services like DeepSeek, while the country’s Personal Information Protection Commission is investigating how DeepSeek manages user data.

Italy
Italy has also taken steps to restrict DeepSeek, particularly regarding the processing of Italian users’ data. The Italian Data Protection Authority (Garante) imposed restrictions and requested details on DeepSeek’s data policies, citing a lack of transparency in data handling.

Taiwan
Taiwan has banned DeepSeek from all government departments, citing national security risks, and has blocked it from all government networks.

United States is considering a ban

The United States has not yet banned DeepSeek but is considering restricting its use. NASA has already blocked DeepSeek from its systems, and the U.S. Navy has warned personnel against using the AI service. Additionally, U.S. lawmakers are drafting a bill to ban DeepSeek on government-owned devices due to security concerns.

What Data does DeepSeek collect?

According to its privacy policy, DeepSeek collects personal information such as email, phone number, password, and date of birth. It also records chat history, including user interactions with the chatbot. Technical data such as IP addresses, keystroke patterns, and operating system details are also gathered. Information is shared with service providers and advertising partners, raising concerns over how long data is retained and who has access to it.

How DeepSeek data policy compares to other AI platforms

DeepSeek’s data collection practices are not unique. Other AI platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT also gather user data. However, OpenAI follows stricter data protection regulations in regions like the EU. Western governments believe OpenAI can be regulated, whereas Chinese platforms like DeepSeek are perceived as direct security threats.

What is the future of DeepSeek?

DeepSeek has disrupted the AI market with its cost-effective model. While OpenAI’s GPT-4 required over $100 million in training costs, DeepSeek’s latest model was developed for less than $6 million. Its rapid rise in popularity even caused a 17% drop in Nvidia’s stock value, leading to significant shifts in global AI investments.

As more governments evaluate DeepSeek’s risks, additional bans could be implemented. Western governments continue to assess the security implications of Chinese AI platforms, emphasizing concerns about espionage and unauthorized data access. The controversy surrounding DeepSeek highlights the broader tension between AI development and national security policies worldwide.

The technology behind DeepSeek R1

DeepSeek R1’s architecture combines efficiency and intelligence, setting a new benchmark for AI performance. While traditional AI models require massive computational power, DeepSeek optimizes its neural networks to achieve higher accuracy with fewer resources. This efficiency is crucial for industries like healthcare, finance, cybersecurity, and autonomous systems, where real-time decision-making is essential.

Feature

Traditional AI Models

DeepSeek R1

Learning Method

Predefined datasets

Adaptive, self-learning

Processing Power

High computational cost

Optimized neural efficiency

Decision-Making

Rule-based

Contextual & autonomous

Transparency

Limited

Explainable AI (XAI) integration

By utilizing a self-learning framework, DeepSeek reduces reliance on extensive manual programming, making it more adaptable across various industries.

DeepSeek’s Open-Source model gives it an edge over ChatGPT

A key feature of DeepSeek R1 is that it is completely open-source. Unlike OpenAI’s models like ChatGPT, which have restrictions, DeepSeek R1’s code is free for anyone to use and develop. This open approach will help AI grow faster by allowing developers worldwide to improve and build on it.

Open-source AI is also important because it gives everyone access to advanced technology, not just big companies. It helps developers improve and customize AI, making it better for everyone. Being open also builds trust and encourages teamwork, leading to faster progress in AI.

DeepSeek’s disruptive AI development strategy

DeepSeek’s strategy of developing powerful AI models with limited resources sets it apart from its competitors. The R1 model, with only 671 billion parameters, is significantly smaller than those of its rivals.

Only 37 billion parameters are activated during usage, optimizing computational resources. The model was trained with just $5.6 million, far less than the multi-billion-dollar investments made by OpenAI and Google.

How does this impact the AI Market?

The financial impact of DeepSeek’s emergence has been significant. Following the announcement, the Nasdaq Composite Index dropped over 3%, with major U.S. tech firms, including Nvidia, Oracle, and Dell, suffering substantial losses. The world’s 500 richest individuals lost a combined $108 billion, with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang losing $20.1 billion in a single day.

DeepSeek has gained attention for creating powerful AI models at a much lower cost than big tech companies in Silicon Valley. While Western firms rely on expensive Nvidia GPUs, DeepSeek found a more efficient way to train its AI. Before U.S. export rules tightened, the company collected thousands of Nvidia GPUs, giving it a big advantage in computing power.

Liang Wenfeng

Who Created DeepSeek?

Much of DeepSeek’s success can be attributed to its visionary founder, Liang Wenfeng. Born in 1985, Liang studied information engineering at Zhejiang University before starting DeepSeek in 2023. He has also established High-Flyer Quant, one of China’s largest AI-driven hedge funds. Liang’s emphasis on open AI research and original innovation distinguishes DeepSeek from many other Chinese tech firms, which often focus on adapting existing technologies.

Startup culture is at the heart of this innovation

DeepSeek operates with a start-up mentality. Its team consists of highly skilled graduates from top Chinese universities, including Tsinghua and Peking. The company follows a flat organizational structure, fostering flexibility and rapid innovation. The development of the DeepSeek R1 model involved around 200 researchers, highlighting the company’s collaborative approach to AI development.

AI investments in Silicon Valley are now under huge pressure

DeepSeek’s success challenges the traditional belief that cutting-edge AI development requires massive financial investments. With a reported development cost of just $5.6 million, DeepSeek has shown that efficient AI training methods can rival billion-dollar projects from Western tech giants. This has led to investor skepticism about Silicon Valley’s high-spending AI strategies, raising questions about whether U.S. firms are overinvesting in AI development. Billions of dollars vanished from the market as investors panicked over DeepSeek.

The Global AI Race: U.S. vs. China

As the U.S. and China continue their battle for AI supremacy, DeepSeek’s rise shifts the dynamics of this global competition.

Factor

United States

China (DeepSeek)

AI Investment

Private & government-funded

Chinese Hedge Fund (High Flyer)

AI Applications

Research, autonomous tech, ethical AI

Large-scale industrial AI, state monitoring

Regulation

Ethical oversight & transparency

Centralized government control

AI Chip Access

Advanced GPU technology

U.S. sanctions limiting chip supply

Despite U.S. sanctions on high-performance AI chips, China is countering by developing its own AI hardware and optimizing models to run on lower-cost chips. This evolving competition is reshaping global AI policies, with both nations striving for dominance in next-generation intelligence systems.

How is the U.S. responding to DeepSeek’s growing influence in AI?

The U.S. government has taken notice of DeepSeek’s disruptive impact. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that U.S. officials are reviewing the national security implications of the Chinese AI model. The National Security Council (NSC) is evaluating potential threats posed by DeepSeek’s AI technology. Concerns have been raised about the potential distillation techniques used by DeepSeek, leading to discussions about stricter measures to prevent unauthorized learning from U.S.-based AI technologies.

US policy shifts and the future of AI regulations

DeepSeek’s rise has forced the U.S. government to reconsider its AI and semiconductor policies. Analysts see DeepSeek’s success as a “Sputnik moment” for the AI race, similar to the Soviet Union’s launch of the first satellite in 1957. U.S. policymakers may shift their focus from hardware bans to regulating AI model behavior and access to training data in the future.

Is this the start of a new age in AI?

DeepSeek’s emergence marks a turning point in the global AI competition. It has demonstrated that China’s private sector can lead in AI innovation, challenging U.S. dominance in the field. As the U.S. reassesses its AI policies and China strengthens its tech ecosystem, DeepSeek is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.

Whether this leads to increased competition or collaboration remains to be seen, but one thing is clear, DeepSeek has cemented itself as a game-changer in the AI landscape.

OpenAI’s decision to block access for China-based developers will reshape the AI landscape in the region. Industry insiders and analysts believe this move will not hinder but rather accelerate the growth of the Chinese AI sector.

Zhou Hongyi, CEO of Qihoo 360, anticipates that the ban will drive Chinese users towards local AI models. Qihoo 360 has already developed its large language model (LLM). Despite OpenAI’s services being officially unavailable in China, developers have been using VPNs and APIs to bypass restrictions. However, the new ban is prompting a swift response from Chinese tech firms eager to capitalize on the opportunity.

In reaction to OpenAI’s ban, several Chinese companies are offering incentives to attract developers. Beijing-based Zhipu AI, for example, has launched a “special house-moving plan” to facilitate the transition to its platform. Major firms like Alibaba, Baidu, Baichuan, and 01.ai are also providing various perks, including discounts, freebies, and technical support. Baidu is offering free AI model fine-tuning and 50 million free tokens, while SenseTime Group Inc. is providing 50 million free tokens and Zhipu AI is giving away 150 million tokens along with training sessions.

source:openai.com

The ban could significantly impact the market, leading to an exit of smaller startups that emerged during the “battle of a hundred models.” There are concerns about whether other open-source models, like Meta’s Llama, will also cut off access to Chinese developers.

OpenAI’s move will likely benefit local LLMs by reducing competition, but Chinese developers might face challenges accessing advanced global algorithms. This aligns with the US government’s efforts to limit Chinese access to advanced AI and semiconductor technology, impacting the broader US-China tech competition.

In the long term, the lack of access to global tools may slow down Chinese AI progress. Alibaba Chairman Joe Tsai estimates it will take two years for Chinese AI models to match their US counterparts. This situation might also accelerate the migration of Chinese tech startups overseas to find more stable markets.

Microsoft, however, is maintaining access to OpenAI models for eligible Hong Kong customers through its Azure cloud platform, with no changes to Azure OpenAI service offerings in Hong Kong. This continues to provide some developers in the region with the tools they need.

Overall, OpenAI’s ban is not a setback but a catalyst for growth and transformation in the Chinese AI sector. With over 200 home-grown LLMs, including 117 approved for public release, China is poised to strengthen its position in the global AI industry.

China faces a challenging yet promising landscape in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chip market and the broader semiconductor industry, driven by surging global demand and strategic expansions.

High-bandwidth memory chips are experiencing a significant surge in demand, primarily driven by their critical role in AI applications within data centers. This growing demand is expected to contribute to an approximate 80% revenue growth in the global memory chip market this year, bouncing back from a low base in the previous year. The key players leading this market include SK Hynix, which holds a 50% global market share, followed by Samsung Electronics and the US-based Micron Technology.

China’s Position and Challenges

China accounts for 30-35% of global memory consumption. However, the country faces substantial challenges in producing high-end memory chips due to limitations in its semiconductor supply chain. Currently, China’s production capabilities are more suited to mid to low-end memory solutions. Consequently, as China’s AI ecosystem continues to expand, it will increasingly rely on imports, particularly from Korean memory chip producers.

Despite these challenges, China is actively working to strengthen its position in the HBM market. ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) represents China’s leading hope for domestic HBM production. CXMT, in collaboration with TongFu Microelectronics, is developing HBM samples, although it may take up to four years for these products to reach the market. In the interim, China sees potential growth opportunities in lower-end memory products, particularly for AI edge devices such as autonomous vehicles, AI-enabled smartphones, and personal computers. By 2025, the demand from edge AI applications is expected to drive about 20% industry revenue growth.

External Challenges

China’s ambitions in the semiconductor sector are also constrained by external factors, including potential further restrictions from the US, Japan, and the Netherlands on developing HBM chips.

Strategic Expansion Amid US Sanctions

In response to fears of more US sanctions, Chinese semiconductor companies, including SMIC and Hua Hong Semiconductor Group, are ramping up their capacities. Investments are primarily focused on legacy chips used in applications like cars and consumer electronics. This year, China’s wafer fabrication capacity is projected to increase by 15% to 8.9 million wafers per month, with a further 14% increase to 10.1 million wafers per month expected next year. This rapid growth is set to make China account for about 30% of the world’s total wafer fabrication capacity, outpacing global growth rates.

Economic and Market Impact

The expansion efforts have led to a significant surge in sales of semiconductor wafer fab equipment in China, which saw a 48% increase last year compared to a mere 1% worldwide growth rate. Meanwhile, China’s imports of integrated circuits (ICs) dropped by 10.8% in volume and 15.4% in value.

Overcapacity Concerns and Domestic Advantages

Despite these aggressive expansions, analysts warn of potential overcapacity in the next two years, which could drive global chip prices down. Additionally, the Biden administration’s planned tariffs on $18 billion worth of Chinese imports, including a 50% hike on semiconductor imports, add to the complexities.

However, China’s drive towards self-sufficiency has benefited local foundries like SMIC and Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp. These foundries enjoy higher capacity utilization rates due to domestic substitution policies. For example, Hua Hong Semiconductor operates at maximum capacity and plans a 10% price increase in the latter half of the year.

Market Recovery and Demand

Local foundries in China are showing a faster recovery in capacity utilization compared to their global peers, supported by high customer demand during the traditional peak inventory stocking season. Recent price adjustments aim to alleviate profit pressures rather than indicating a full recovery in demand.

China is strategically expanding its semiconductor capacity to mitigate the impact of US sanctions and reduce reliance on imports. While rapid growth brings the risk of overcapacity, domestic policies, and self-sufficiency drives provide significant advantages, positioning China as a formidable player in the global semiconductor market.

Beijing’s local government has introduced a subsidy plan to help local businesses buy Chinese semiconductors, especially GPUs, aiming to strengthen its computing capabilities and lessen reliance on foreign tech. This initiative comes as part of a broader effort to enhance the city’s smart computing capabilities by 2027.

Under the undisclosed subsidy scheme, local firms will receive financial incentives to purchase domestically manufactured GPUs, with the subsidies being proportional to the investment required for building computing services. The policy focus emphasizes the use of domestic-designed and manufactured GPUs, essential for high-performance systems in data centers, particularly for AI development projects.

source: AI

Recent changes to US export regulations have made it difficult for Chinese companies to get their hands on advanced AI processors and semiconductor manufacturing gear. US trade sanctions have restricted companies like Nvidia from exporting sought-after components to China, prompting Chinese entities to seek alternative solutions.

Beijing’s smart computing initiative aims to support the training of both general and industry-specific large language models (LLMs), crucial for AI development. Access to advanced computing resources, particularly GPUs, is essential for AI development, driving Beijing’s subsidy scheme to ensure self-sufficiency in this area by 2027.

China’s strategic shift to become self-sufficient in AI technology

China is shifting its strategy towards promoting domestic production of AI chips over-reliance on international firms like Nvidia, Intel, and AMD. The subsidy scheme reflects a broader national strategy to encourage the adoption of homegrown AI chips, ensuring self-sustainability in AI semiconductor technology despite external restrictions.

Leading players in the Chinese AI chip market include Huawei, Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent, with Huawei making significant advancements in AI chip technology. Other emerging companies are expected to gain market share with time and further development.

Beijing’s initiative shows its commitment to technological self-sufficiency amid escalating trade tensions and US export controls. Financial incentives provided to local firms aim to accelerate the adoption of AI processors, bolstering Beijing’s computing infrastructure and reducing dependence on foreign technology.

In addition to traditional semiconductor technology, China is also targeting advancements in silicon photonics and quantum computing chips to achieve full self-reliance on smart computing infrastructure by 2027. However, geopolitical tensions and potential expansion of US-led export restrictions pose business risks for chip makers and equipment suppliers like ASML.

What sets Haomo’s ADAS kits apart is not just their affordability but also their performance. With computing power ranging from 5 Tops to 100 Tops and a sophisticated sensor system, these kits promise robust assistance without relying on high-definition maps. This innovation aligns with Haomo’s vision to capitalize on the expected 70 percent penetration of smart driving features in China by 2025.

The introduction of these low-cost ADAS kits marks a significant advancement in the autonomous driving sector. Haomo.AI’s chairman, Zhang Kai, stated that the second-generation HPilot passenger car ADAS products are slated for integration into production vehicles in 2023 and 2024. Haomo.AI aims to leverage these affordable solutions to target the rapidly growing smart driving market, intending to enhance the penetration of Level 2 and above assisted driving features in China.

The move towards smart driving technology reflects the broader trend in China’s automotive industry. The China Passenger Car Association reported that 35 percent of pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles delivered in the first half of 2023 were equipped with autonomous driving systems equivalent to Level 2 or higher. Analysts believe that the demand for intelligent vehicles in China, driven by factors such as congested roads and long urban commutes, has expedited the mainstream adoption of self-driving systems.

Haomo.AI’s investor, Great Wall Motor, China’s largest sport utility vehicle (SUV) maker, supports the startup’s vision for the future of automotive intelligence. The company’s plans to expand abroad, including establishing an electric car assembly plant in Vietnam by 2025, signify the global impact of China’s innovative strides in the electric and smart vehicle industry.

Haomo.AI’s affordable ADAS kits are poised to transform the way China drives, ushering in an era of intelligent and accessible mobility solutions.

In a challenging job market, Chinese university graduates have found a lucrative haven in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, according to a recent report by Chinese recruitment platform Liepin.

The study reveals that AI-related jobs are offering unprecedented average monthly salaries of $2600, marking a 40% increase over the past three years. This surge in AI industry salaries has been attributed to the intense demand for generative AI skills, driven by the competition to develop services similar to ChatGPT.

Following closely behind AI, blockchain-related positions emerged as the second most lucrative choice, accompanied by roles in elderly care services, aviation, aerospace equipment, and communication devices, all offering competitive salaries ranging from $2000 to $2300.

The report underscores the nationwide talent war, with cities such as Xian and Hefei intensifying their investments in the tech sector. Compensation has become a pivotal tool for attracting graduates, making them focal points for cities aiming to bolster their workforce.

Information technology, the internet, and video gaming continue to be popular fields for graduates, although there has been a shift in interest towards roles in electronics, telecommunications, and semiconductors, with the number of CV submissions nearly doubling from 2021 levels.

Despite a slight dip in the average salary for university graduates in 2023 compared to the previous year, the decline has been attributed to macroeconomic uncertainties. However, salaries still surpass those of 2021, reflecting the overall resilience of the job market amidst economic challenges.

When considering cities, Beijing leads the pack with the highest average salary of $1800, followed by Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hangzhou, home to tech giants like Baidu and Meituan. This trend highlights the concentration of high-paying job opportunities in major urban centers.

The rapid growth in the AI and blockchain sectors mirrors global trends. However, these technologies also present challenges, including the displacement of certain jobs and ethical considerations.

According to a Reuters report, the Chinese government will be increasing its spending on basic research by 10.6 percent this year alone. The surge in investment also showcases the nation’s commitment to further advance its tech sector, which arrives due to the various clashes between China and the US, and other nations as well, over technology policies. The local government also highlighted that it will focus on seven ey segments in its five year plan.

These areas include, ‘next-generation artificial intelligence, quantum information, brain science, semiconductors, genetic research and biotechnology, clinical medicine and health, and deep space, deep sea, and polar exploration.’ Furthermore, it further added that it would also seek to establish more national laboratories to research quantum information and artificial intelligence as well. Additionally, the government will be encouraging companies to open up data in areas ranging from search, e-commerce, along with social media as well, to support third party data services.

It would also focus on improving its channels for domestic companies going public. On the other hand, the government would be supporting foreign funded companies to set up their own research and development centers in China as well. A few other areas it seeks to expand on are the electric vehicle sector and 5G networking. The nation is aiming to achieve 56 percent 5G penetration within the next five years.

World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2019 (WAIC 2019) in Shanghai just closed at the end of August. With the last day when it opened to the masses of visitors, it probably marked a critical point of the development of China AI industry. The whole country is showing enormous enthusiasm and energy for the new revolution, from the government to the mass, from manufacturers to internet companies. Under the background of China-US trade war, the economic conflict is spreading rapidly to other fields, especially the technology competition. At WAIC 2019, it’s widely received that AI technology is growing as the most important part of the future of human society. Tracing back to the last three industrial revolutions, the western world has played a vital leading role and decided how human beings live on this planet. However, in recent years China has developed rapidly in the manufacture, internet, and technology and accumulated solid technological infrastructure due to its enormous market and effective government supports.

At WAIC 2019, we noticed that the integration among manufacturers, big data, network & communication has been starting well distributed to promote more deep cooperation in the field of AI. Not just the domestics, the globalized participation was also a significant process at WAIC 2019. For example, the international giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and Tesla brought their self-developed AI solutions to the exhibition primarily because of the enormous China market. And China AI companies are also proactive to establish cooperation and joint laboratories with oversea research institutions.

At the opening ceremony of the WAIC 2019, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Alibaba founder Jack Ma had a most-watched talk on AI development. During the talk, they showed completely different views on AI development.

‘The biggest mistake that AI researchers are making is assuming they are intelligent. They are not. AI is vastly smarter.’

-Elon Musk

Elon Musk more mentioned that researchers are underestimating how powerful AI is. He seems to concern more about whether human society can take the boomerang effect of AI.

AI is going to open a new chapter of the society of the world that people try to understand ourselves better, rather than the outside world.

99.99% of the prediction that human beings had in history about the future is all wrong. Only 0.001% of the predictions are right. They are right because by accident.

-Jack Ma

Jack Ma, oppositely, showed more of his confidence in AI as an entrepreneur. As being through the rapid development of China internet, Jack Ma presented an optimistic attitude as most China AI companies have.

Their discussion presented two voices which are commonly heard from both the academics and industry. Their companies are important powers to AI development. Especially for Tesla, their Autopilot has been applied in thousands of Tesla cars as an assistant self-driving system. While for Alibaba, their advantage of consumer-market data helps them build up a mature financial AI service system, Ant Financial. At least from their current focus, Tesla is an industrial manufacturer integrating the AI software and car hardware together for general users, while Alibaba is a successful internet service provider who tries to integrate AI technology to serve more business participators. For their business, they do have something in common. For example, they both are paying much attention to the China market, the biggest single market in the world covering over 1/5 population of the planet. The fast proceedings of Tesla Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai have deepened the cooperation between Tesla and China, which is also the reason why Musk hailed China as ‘the future’.

AI applications in 2019

At WAIC 2019, most AI companies brought their AI solutions or products to the exhibition, such as Huawei’s AI chips, Tesla’s Model 3, Deepblue’s AI bus and AI Retail, ABB’s AI manufacture robots and so on. It’s pretty predictable from the various application that AI will enter all aspects of our life very soon but not just existing as a kind of algorithm in our phones. Though AI is still in a very early stage, the AI providers now are more thinking a wider application. It’s also why both Jack Ma and Elon Musk agreed the rapid and powerful development of AI.

Another hot topic of WAIC 2019 is the breakthrough of 5G communication technology. Equipped with 5G-enabled real-time remote, AI companies were bringing more human-life applications with faster data transmission and multiple interaction modes. For example, the 5G AI road cleaner developed by Deepblue has been able to help urban administrators monitor public services such as real-time traffic, and then reach prompt reaction with AI. Now it has been developing as an important part of the concept of AI CITY.

AI dilemma

Another thing worth noticing is that there is a controversy when a company showed their AI monitoring and analysis of student classes. They integrated their AI with the class monitor cameras and analyzed their behaviors. It was claimed that their AI would help educators improve their teaching quality. But on the China internet, they were challenged that it was an invasion of students’ privacy. Recently the company responded that it’s just a concept display of one of the AI applications and they will stick to the principle of data privacy protection. The controversy reveals a common dilemma-how AI researchers and providers guarantee the legitimacy in their applicational process.

As various applications of AI have been brought into reality, how to distinguish their legitimacy is also becoming an important topic of AI development.
