BYD has announced that its advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS), called “God’s Eye,” will now be included in all its electric vehicles at no extra cost. This system enables autonomous highway driving for up to 600 miles without driver intervention. It is now available in over two dozen BYD models, including the Seagull mini EV, Qin Plus sedan, and Dolphin hatchback, without any price increase.

BYD brings Affordable Self-Driving Technology to all EVs

BYD’s new system makes self-driving technology accessible to budget-conscious buyers. The Seagull mini EV, priced at RMB 69,800 ($9,700), now includes an entry-level version of “God’s Eye.” All BYD models priced above RMB 100,000 ($13,686) come with the full version of the system. Unlike competitors, BYD does not use expensive LiDAR sensors in its lower-end models, helping keep costs low while maintaining autonomous functionality.

How does BYD’s free tech impact the market?

The announcement has shaken the automotive industry. Analysts expected a price hike of RMB 3,000 due to the inclusion of ADAS, but BYD maintained its existing prices. The company’s move puts it ahead of Tesla, whose Full Self-Driving (FSD) system costs RMB 64,000 and is available only for vehicles priced above RMB 227,500. Meanwhile, BYD’s system is available in cars costing as little as RMB 69,800.

What are BYD’s future plans?

BYD aims to make self-driving technology a standard feature in all cars, similar to seat belts and airbags. The company plans to expand the capabilities of “God’s Eye” through over-the-air (OTA) updates, enabling urban self-navigation by 2025. With nearly 4.3 million EVs sold in 2024 and an expected 22% growth in 2025, BYD is positioning itself as a leader in autonomous electric vehicles.

How will this impact the competition?

BYD’s rapid advancements have put pressure on competitors like Xpeng and Tesla. Tesla is still waiting for regulatory approval for its FSD system in China, while BYD has already secured a Level 3 assisted driving test license. Meanwhile, Japanese automakers like Nissan and Honda are struggling to keep up in the EV transition.

BYD’s partnership with AI company DeepSeek further strengthens its position. The “DiPilot” system, included in BYD’s sub-$10,000 models, offers Level 2 autonomy, enabling features like lane changes, automated braking, and remote parking. The system uses AI-driven neural networks for real-time decision-making, continuously improving with data from BYD’s growing fleet.

With its groundbreaking affordability and technological advancements, BYD is reshaping the future of self-driving cars, making autonomous driving accessible to everyone.

China is set to make a major leap in self-driving technology. This year, 15 million new EVs in the country will come equipped with Level 2 (L2) autonomous driving features. Even budget-friendly models priced under 100,000 yuan (US$13,914) will now include basic self-driving capabilities. This rapid growth is driven by the declining cost of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), making high-tech features more accessible to everyday consumers.

By 2025, two out of three new cars in China will have L2 or more advanced autonomous capabilities. L2 systems can control steering, acceleration, and braking but still require driver supervision. More advanced L3+ features, which allow for hands-free driving in certain conditions, are also expanding, though full automation (L4 and L5) is still under development.

How does this impact the auto industry?

China’s EV industry continues to expand, with 22.9 million vehicles delivered in 2024, marking a 5.5% year-on-year increase. The mass adoption of self-driving technology is set to change the global auto industry, with autonomous trucks expected to save Chinese companies 1.8 trillion yuan annually by 2030.

The cost of ADAS has fallen to around 10,000 yuan per unit, and Lidar sensors, essential for mapping surroundings, have dropped from thousands of dollars to just US$200 per unit in five years. As technology becomes cheaper, more automakers are integrating self-driving features into their vehicles.

How does this impact major competitors like Tesla?

While Tesla remains a global leader in self-driving technology, it faces challenges in China. The company achieved record sales in China at the end of 2024 but struggles with fierce competition from local EV makers like BYD. A global EV price war has also impacted Tesla’s profit margins, with Q4 revenue falling short of expectations.

Tesla’s biggest challenge in China is regulatory restrictions. The country does not allow Tesla to transfer self-driving training videos abroad, and US laws restrict AI training in China. These issues have slowed Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) progress in the country.

Despite these challenges, Tesla is advancing its self-driving efforts in other geographies. The company plans to launch unsupervised autonomous driving in Austin, Texas, and other US cities by late 2025. However, its future in China remains uncertain due to economic and political pressures.

With self-driving technology becoming standard in millions of Chinese cars, the country is cementing its position as a leader in the future of autonomous vehicles.

The complexity of China’s road conditions is a major factor. Unlike the relatively straightforward road systems in the United States, China’s roads are often crowded and lack dedicated lanes for non-motorized vehicles. For instance, about 30% of roads in central Guangzhou do not have specific lanes for bicycles and e-scooters. This results in e-scooters frequently using motor vehicle lanes, creating a challenging environment for autonomous driving systems like Tesla’s FSD.

XPeng’s Perspective on Autonomous Driving

Li Liyun, head of autonomous driving at XPeng, highlighted the difficulties that Tesla’s FSD will face in China. He emphasized the need for smart driving systems to be optimized for the prevalent e-scooter usage. XPeng, a leading Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has already tested its smart driving capabilities in cities like Nanning, Guangzhou, Kunming, and Nanchang. Their Navigation Guided Pilot (XNGP) has successfully handled complex scenarios involving e-scooters, demonstrating the importance of local adaptation.

XPeng’s experience and advancements in autonomous driving provide valuable insights. The company is set to release an updated version of XNGP in July, which will integrate end-to-end large model technology for enhanced performance. This update aims to address the specific challenges posed by the complex and crowded urban environments in China.

Market and Regulatory Context

China’s electric scooter market is vast, with 350 million e-scooters and 42.28 million units produced in 2023 alone. Tesla is preparing to register its FSD software with Chinese authorities, targeting an official launch in 2024. A pilot program is currently being conducted in Shanghai’s Nanhui New Town, involving ten Tesla vehicles.

He Xiaopeng, XPeng’s CEO, has tested Tesla’s FSD in the United States and acknowledged its impressive performance in Silicon Valley and on highways. However, he pointed out the significant challenge posed by fast-moving e-scooters, which often travel against traffic in China. This insight underlines the need for Tesla to adapt its technology to the unique conditions of the Chinese market.

The successful adaptation of Tesla’s FSD technology in China hinges on its ability to manage the widespread use of e-scooters and navigate complex road conditions. As the competition in the global self-driving market intensifies, the ability of smart driving systems to optimize for local conditions will be a critical factor for success.

Li Auto, a prominent player in China’s electric vehicle (EV) market, has revealed an ambitious roadmap for both its charging infrastructure and vehicle lineup, aiming to solidify its position as a leading provider of electric mobility solutions.

In a recent leaked document, it was seen that Li Auto’s charging station expansion plan has undergone a significant revision. Originally targeting 3,000 charging stations by 2025, the company now sets its sights on over 10,000 supercharging stations within the same timeframe. This revised strategy includes collaborative efforts with third-party partners to expedite construction, signaling a proactive approach to meet the growing demand for EV charging infrastructure.

The timeline for the supercharging station expansion is structured into distinct phases. The year 2023 marked the launch phase, initiating a ramp-up of construction efforts. By 2024, the maturation phase aims to exceed 4,000 stations, setting the stage for the “breakout” phase in 2025, which will see expansion into tier 4 and 5 cities. By 2026, Li Auto anticipates meeting the charging needs of approximately 2.16 million battery electric vehicle (BEV) owners, reflecting the company’s commitment to comprehensive infrastructure development.

Complementing its charging station expansion, Li Auto is also enhancing its vehicle offerings. Currently known for its Li L7, Li L8, and Li L9 extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), the company is set to launch its first battery electric vehicle (BEV), the Li Mega MPV, on March 1. Additionally, plans are underway to introduce three BEV models based on a high-voltage platform in the second half of 2024, signaling a strategic shift towards all-electric mobility solutions.

In terms of sales targets, Li Auto is aiming for 800,000 annual BEV sales by 2024, with a specific focus on achieving at least 400,000 unit sales for existing models. The company has set ambitious sales goals for individual models, including a monthly target of 30,000 units for the Li L6 EREV and 8,000 units for the upcoming Li Mega BEV.

Regarding charging infrastructure coverage, Li Auto aims to cover 90% of China’s highway mileage and major cities by 2025, with further expansion planned to meet the needs of 920,000 BEV owners in tier 4 and 5 cities by the same year.

With these comprehensive expansion plans, Li Auto is poised to make significant strides in both the EV market and charging infrastructure, catering to the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions across China.

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer NIO, has successfully doubled the coverage of its Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) capabilities on urban roads in China. As of the end of January, the Navigate on Pilot Plus (NOP+) urban road coverage reached an impressive 651,640 kilometers, marking a remarkable growth of 103.75% from the previous month.

The NOP+ coverage expansion is particularly noteworthy, demonstrating a gain of 331,819 kilometers in January alone. This surge brings the total coverage to over 1 million kilometers when considering highways and urban expressways. The city-specific achievements are equally impressive, with NOP+ achieving 99.2% coverage of Shanghai’s main roads and 93% coverage of the entire road network. Other cities with high NIO vehicle ownership, including Beijing, Zhengzhou, Chengdu, and Suzhou, showcase ultra-high-density coverage.

source: nio.com

The growth extends beyond geographical reach. The number of cities covered by NOP+ soared from 208 at the end of December to an impressive 606 by the end of January. Importantly, NOP+ now encompasses all cities in China’s 34 first-tier administrative regions, excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

In tandem with these technological advancements, NIO delivered 10,055 electric vehicles in January 2024, marking an 18.2% increase from last year. However, the month-on-month comparison reveals a 44% decline, aligning with market expectations. The cumulative deliveries reached an impressive 459,649 as of January 31, 2024, with the impact of the Chinese New Year falling on February 10 creating a temporary anomaly in year-on-year comparisons.

Breaking down the deliveries, 6,307 SUVs and 3,748 sedans were included in January’s figures, with the Nio ES6 SUV contributing 40% of sales. The ET5 and its station wagon variant, ET5 Touring, accounted for nearly 30% of sales. Nio’s battery swap alliance continues to expand, with notable members including Geely, Changan, JAC, and Chery.

Looking ahead, NIO’s plans for 2024 include no new model launches, but annual updates for the existing lineup are expected. The highly anticipated executive sedan ET9 is set to launch in early 2025, with the entry-level Alps brand unveiling in March or April 2024, and deliveries scheduled for later in the year. Nio aims to launch its second sub-brand, Firefly, focusing on small electric cars in 2025.

With an expanding sales team and the launch of the ALPS sub-brand anticipated to stimulate growth, NIO remains at the forefront of the evolving electric vehicle landscape. The pre-market trading reflects the market response, with NIO shares up by 2.67%.

Geely Auto Group has officially launched the Galaxy E8, marking a significant stride in its pursuit of the mainstream electric vehicle (EV) market. Priced at $24,752, the Galaxy E8 positions itself as a formidable competitor against BYD’s popular Han electric vehicle, offering a more affordable alternative for budget-conscious consumers.

The Galaxy E8 is the latest addition to Geely’s Galaxy product lineup and represents the company’s commitment to sustainable mobility through its Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA). Geely Auto plans to introduce a total of seven models in the Galaxy lineup by 2025, encompassing both plug-in hybrid and pure electric options.

This mid-to-large-size electric sedan boasts dimensions of 5,010 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,465 mm in height, with a wheelbase measuring 2,925 mm. Geely Auto CEO Jerry Gan emphasizes that the Galaxy E8 aims to capture the widest market share in the competitive EV segment, targeting mainstream plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicle enthusiasts.

Under the hood, the Galaxy E8 offers diverse trims with multiple starting prices, featuring a high-performance silicon carbide electric drive system with dual motors generating 475 kW. The top-of-the-line version, based on an 800 V high-voltage platform, achieves a remarkable range of 180 kilometers on a five-minute charge and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.49 seconds.

source: Geely

Inside the cockpit, the Galaxy E8 incorporates cutting-edge technology, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip. Standard features include a large 45-inch screen with an 8K resolution, setting a new benchmark in China’s EV sector.

To further sweeten the deal, Geely Auto is offering discounts, option funds, and trade-in subsidies for customers placing orders before January 31. Deliveries have already commenced, with prominent figures like Yu Minhong, founder of New Oriental Education, becoming early adopters.

Geely Auto’s move into the mass-market EV segment is strategically timed, considering the growing demand for electric vehicles in China. With the Galaxy E8, Geely aims to not only boost sales but also establish itself as a key player in the evolving landscape of electric mobility, rivaling the dominance of manufacturers like BYD in the Class B sedan category.

As the curtains closed in 2023, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market witnessed a flurry of activity, with key players showcasing remarkable performances and market dynamics reflecting the industry’s evolution.

Li Auto Sets Records:

Li Auto led the pack, reporting robust figures for the week ending December 31. The company achieved a milestone with 14,100 units sold, a testament to the growing demand for their vehicles. The Li L7, L8, and L9 models secured a combined 14,100 insurance registrations, indicating a strong consumer base.

Nio and Xpeng Maintain Momentum:

Nio and Xpeng continued their competitive streak, reporting impressive numbers. Nio saw 5,700 insured registrations for the week ending December 31, contributing to a total of 17,700 units for December. Xpeng, on the other hand, hit a record-breaking 20,115 vehicles in December deliveries, marking the third consecutive month above the 20,000-unit mark.

Tesla Faces BYD Challenge:

Tesla, although reporting a robust 94,139 China-made EV sales for December, faced a formidable challenge from BYD. BYD emerged as the top global EV maker in Q4, surpassing Tesla, with a record-breaking 944,779 new energy vehicles delivered. The BYD Dynasty and Ocean lineup, featuring EVs and petrol-electric hybrid models, propelled the company to new heights.

Market Dynamics and Competitions:

China’s auto market, the world’s largest, remained dynamic. Tesla’s initiation of a price war influenced over 40 brands, yet it faced stiff competition from Chinese latecomers, indicating a shifting landscape. Notably, Xiaomi entered the EV market with ambitions to be a top-five automaker in the next 15 to 20 years, adding another layer of competition.

Tesla’s Future Plans and Challenges:

Despite facing challenges, Tesla remains a key player with ambitious plans. The acquisition of land in Shanghai for a megapack battery manufacturing plant reflects Tesla’s commitment to expanding its EV capacity. However, progress on the megapack battery manufacturing plant appears slower than initially planned, awaiting regulatory approval.

December 2023 showcased the vibrancy and competitiveness of China’s EV market, with BYD’s ascendancy marking a significant shift in the global EV landscape. As established players and newcomers vie for market share, the stage is set for an exciting and transformative year ahead.

China, the driving force behind the global electric vehicle (EV) surge, continues to defy expectations with record-breaking sales, particularly in October. Despite the conclusion of an 11-year subsidy scheme for EV purchases in 2022, local authorities in China have stepped in, offering aid, tax rebates, and subsidies, fueling a remarkable 29% year-to-date increase in September. Notably, October’s figures reveal that China’s EV demand remains robust, showcasing resilience even after subsidy cuts.

Mainland China’s dominance in the global EV market is unmistakable, representing a staggering 55% of global EV sales in H1 2023, accounting for 3.4 million units. While the growth rate has moderated to 43%, a notable decrease from the extraordinary 118% seen in H1 2022, the sheer volume underscores China’s pivotal role in the ongoing EV revolution.

The end of China’s EV support scheme did not come without challenges. Disruption, uncertainty, and a price war ensued, with Tesla leading the charge. BYD, a prominent Chinese EV brand, emerged as a leader, facing headwinds from a Tesla-led price war that posed challenges for smaller brands in the fiercely competitive market.

However, experts anticipate a continued strong performance for China in 2023, asserting its position as the world’s largest auto market and a key driver of global EV sales. The final two months of the year are projected to be seasonally high for vehicle sales in China.

As the global EV market charts new territory, China’s steadfast commitment to sustaining EV demand, despite subsidy cuts, underscores the resilience and adaptability of the country’s burgeoning electric vehicle sector. The nation’s ability to navigate challenges and maintain momentum positions it as a linchpin in the ongoing global transition toward sustainable transportation.

In a remarkable surge, China’s passenger electric vehicle exports skyrocketed by 107% year-on-year, reaching approximately 91,000 units in September. Leading the pack was Tesla, with a substantial shipment of 30,566 units from its Shanghai factory, as revealed by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) figures released on Wednesday.

Following closely were BYD and SAIC, with 28,039 and 12,678 units respectively, showcasing the competitive landscape of China’s electric vehicle market. Geely and Smart, a joint venture between Geely and Daimler, contributed 5,026 and 2,146 EVs to the overseas markets. Notably, Xpeng Motors marked its debut on the list this year, exporting 766 EVs in September.

This surge in electric vehicle exports occurred amid a 4.7% increase in car sales in China compared to the same month last year, with 2.04 million passenger vehicles sold in September, according to official CPCA data. New energy vehicles (NEVs) played a significant role, constituting 36.6% of total car sales, a 22.1% increase from the previous year.

The rise in NEV sales was instrumental in several local brands achieving record-breaking sales figures. September, traditionally a strong month for car sales due to the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, saw increased purchases, further fueled by a downturn in the property market. With real estate investments waning, consumers turned to car purchases, boosting the automotive industry.

While Tesla dominated the EV market, its market share in China’s EV segment dipped to 9.89% in the third quarter, compared to 12.98% in the previous quarter and 9.93% a year ago. Despite this, the company’s performance remained robust. BYD, reported a remarkable milestone, selling a record 287,454 NEVs in September. Li Auto, also experienced substantial growth, delivering 36,060 vehicles, reflecting a staggering 212.7% year-on-year increase.

Cui Dongshu, the Secretary-General of CPCA, commented on the shifting consumer sentiment. He noted that the slowdown in China’s economy didn’t dampen enthusiasm for car purchases, with more people opting for cars over property investments. This trend, coupled with the surge in electric vehicle exports, underscores the evolving dynamics of China’s automotive industry, where electric vehicles are becoming increasingly integral to the market’s growth and competitiveness.

Volkswagen disclosed the details of the ambitious partnership with XPeng Motors and SAIC Motor Corporation, aimed at solidifying Volkswagen’s presence in the dynamic Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market. The announcement was made at the Munich Motor Show.

This groundbreaking collaboration is set to introduce a novel three-row, seven-seater SUV model named ‘ID.8’ into the automotive landscape. Anticipated to make its debut around 2026, the ID.8 will share a platform with XPeng’s G9 model, marking a significant stride as one of the pioneer “co-developed” vehicles to enter the domestic market. This launch is expected to supplant the existing Tiguan fuel version in China.

The initial impressions of the ID.8, drawn from concept designs, reveal a seamless fusion of integrated LED daytime running lights that gracefully merge into LED headlights on the front fascia, with a refined lower grille sporting an elegant smoked black mesh design.

image for representation only

Beneath the surface, the ID.8 is poised to provide consumers with a diverse array of choices, including single-motor and dual-motor variants, with the potential for selecting between lithium iron phosphate and ternary lithium battery packs. The cutting-edge EV is estimated to deliver an impressive maximum range of up to 700 kilometers. Furthermore, it may incorporate XPeng’s dual-chamber air suspension system and an intelligent assisted driving system, along with dual-laser radar and dual Orin X chips.

This strategic alliance between Volkswagen and XPeng has the potential to set a precedent for Western automakers seeking to harness Chinese EV expertise, while their Chinese counterparts can leverage global distribution networks.

The collaboration encompasses the production of two fresh battery-powered Volkswagen models, leveraging essential XPeng technologies such as vehicle-to-anything (V2X) and XNGP solutions, an advanced ADAS system comparable to Tesla’s FSD, and an innovative battery chassis architecture.

Despite XPeng’s smaller market share compared to industry giants like Tesla and local powerhouse BYD, it has garnered accolades for its unwavering commitment to advanced technologies and proprietary autonomous vehicle development. Volkswagen’s acquisition of a 5% stake in XPeng not only provides access to autonomous vehicle expertise but also unlocks XPeng’s battery and smart cabin technology.

For XPeng, this partnership offers a gateway to a more extensive customer base, as Volkswagen’s local joint ventures secured an impressive 15% share of China’s retail auto market last year. This collaboration is poised to propel the scaling of XPeng’s AV systems, enhance data collection, and refine algorithms, following a model akin to Tesla’s data feedback loop, contingent upon the success of the new models.

Simultaneously, the partnership holds the potential to elevate Volkswagen’s standing in China’s EV market, where it secured a modest 3% share of the new energy vehicle market in the preceding year. Furthermore, this strategic alignment could facilitate XPeng’s international expansion aspirations.

Earlier today (18th August 2023), Huawei partnered with Chery to announce a new brand dubbed LUXEED. This brand-new car brand will launch the Zhijie S7 as its first-ever model. So let’s have a look.

Huawei & Chery Launch LUXEED: New luxury EV brand

The tech giant is partnering up with Chery, which is a popular automobile maker in China. Chery is known for its Exceed series of cars, and now, it has unveiled the LUXEED lineup of cars after forming a partnership with Huawei. In a recent press conference, Chery’s Executive VP, Gao Xinhua, compared the existing Exceed series with Mercedes-Benz, showcasing its focus on luxury and comfort.

He further added that the new LUXEED series will basically be the electric “BMW” in China. This means that these two lineups will likely target two separate audiences in the automobile market in the region. For those unaware, the LUXEED will be a part of Huawei’s smart car business as well. Based on earlier reports, the new S7 model will be equipped with Huawei motors. The rear-wheel drive model has a maximum power output of 215 kilowatts.

On the other hand, the four-wheel drive variant adds 150 kilowatts to the front motors, with a total system power of 365 kilowatts. This upcoming vehicle will also be equipped with LiDAR technology, which will enable high-level smart driving assistance functions.

BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, set a new sales record in June, signaling a robust rebound in demand after a price war failed to stimulate consumer interest. The China-based EV and battery leader, witnessed the sale of over a quarter of a million units last month, surpassing its previous record established just a month earlier.

According to BYD, the sales of new energy vehicles in June nearly doubled compared to the corresponding period last year, reaching an impressive 253,046 units as opposed to 134,036 units in June 2022. This remarkable surge in sales underlines the growing popularity of EVs within the world’s largest automobile market, primarily driven by heightened consumer enthusiasm and improved economic growth in China.

In the first half of this year, BYD’s shipments also almost doubled, amounting to 1.2 million units. This achievement was aided by favorable economic conditions in China and the resolution of industry disruptions stemming from COVID-19-related lockdowns in Shanghai that occurred a year ago. Despite facing fierce price competition, BYD maintains a market capitalization of $100 billion, surpassing that of both General Motors (GM) and Ford.

The positive trend extends beyond BYD, as Li Auto, a smaller Chinese EV manufacturer led by billionaire Li Xiang, reported a significant year-on-year sales gain of 150% in June, delivering 32,575 vehicles. Shanghai-based Nio, Guangzhou-based Xpeng, and Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai all witnessed significant increases in deliveries, reflecting the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in China.

Nio handed over 10,707 cars to customers in the period, marking a 75% increase compared to the previous month. Xpeng achieved its best sales of the year so far, with a month-on-month jump of 14.8% in deliveries, totaling 8,620 units. While Tesla does not disclose monthly sales figures, data from the CPCA revealed that their Gigafactory in Shanghai delivered 42,508 vehicles in May, a 6.4% increase from the previous month.

These extraordinary sales figures from BYD and Li Auto signify a notable shift towards electric mobility among consumers as the EV market in China stabilizes. The sustained sales growth reflects the increasing acceptance of electric vehicles as a viable and eco-friendly transportation option.

However, the surge in sales of battery-powered cars has come at the expense of petrol-powered vehicles in the world’s largest automotive market. China reported a 7% decline in petrol car sales, with 5.21 million units sold in the first five months of 2023, according to CPCA data.

In terms of market share, BYD emerged as the leader, securing a dominant position with a staggering 79% growth in sales and a 9.8% increase in market share compared to the previous year. Moreover, the top 10 automotive groups, encompassing 28 brands, collectively accounted for over 80% of the total passenger EV sales in China. This consolidation reflects the competitive landscape of the Chinese EV market, where established players continue to drive significant sales volumes.

Despite reductions in subsidies, the continued strong growth of China’s EV market underscores the resilience and popularity of electric vehicles in the country. With a focus on sustainable transportation solutions and a supportive regulatory environment, China is poised to maintain its position as the world’s largest market for EVs, stimulating further innovation and investment in the sector.

In a testament to the burgeoning domestic electric vehicle (EV) industry, eight out of the top 10 best-selling EV models in China during the first quarter of 2023 hailed from Chinese manufacturers. Surprisingly, no foreign models, except Tesla, managed to secure a spot among the country’s top-selling EVs. These findings highlight the strong preference for homegrown EV brands among Chinese consumers.

Impressively, the collective sales of the top 10 best-selling models alone accounted for a substantial 46% of China’s passenger EV market. This dominance underscores the fierce competition within the Chinese EV landscape, with local manufacturers driving the majority of sales.

Furthermore, when it comes to plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs), all of the top five best-selling models in Q1 2023 were manufactured by BYD Auto, cementing the company’s stronghold in this segment. BYD’s success in the PHEV market further solidifies its position as a key player in China’s EV industry.

The remarkable performance of Chinese EV models and the absence of foreign contenders among the top 10 best-sellers showcase China’s progress in developing a robust and competitive EV market. As China continues to prioritize sustainable transportation and expand its charging infrastructure, domestic manufacturers are poised to lead the way, fostering innovation and driving the country towards a greener future.

In a major move to bolster the development of new energy vehicles (NEVs) and cater to the increasing demand for public transport charging facilities, China’s State Council, the country’s cabinet and chief administrative authority, has released a comprehensive document outlining its plans to extend NEV charging infrastructure nationwide by 2030.

The document highlights the need to expedite the resolution of shortcomings in the road network charging infrastructure while encouraging the participation of various stakeholders and promoting innovative financing support from development financial institutions.

The aim of the proposed system is to provide extensive NEV charging coverage, with a moderate scale, a reasonable structure, and complete functionality. Such a robust infrastructure will serve as a strong foundation to support the rapid growth of the new energy vehicle industry. Moreover, it will effectively address the charging needs of the population, ensuring convenient and reliable charging options for electric vehicle owners across the country.

The council document states that efforts will be directed toward establishing an effective charging network in rural areas. The construction of public DC fast charging stations in urban areas of county-level cities will be actively promoted. The planning and layout of charging networks in large villages, towns, relocation areas, and key rural tourism spots will be accelerated. Additionally, the deployment of charging networks in township agencies, enterprises, institutions, commercial buildings, transportation hubs, stations, public parking lots, and logistics bases will be vigorously promoted.

The council has planned for the establishment of a well-structured urban charging network in China. It will rely on the existing urban road traffic system, prioritizing two districts (residential and office areas) and three centers (commercial, industrial, and leisure centers). The objective is to expand the network from the central city to the outskirts, gradually covering priority development areas and other regions. Integrated planning, construction, and management of charging infrastructure and parking facilities will be actively promoted to achieve comprehensive coverage across various city parking scenes.

The document, which lays out the roadmap for this ambitious endeavor, highlights the significance of expanding the charging infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of both private and public transportation. By providing convenient and accessible charging facilities, China intends to encourage the widespread adoption of NEVs, thereby contributing to a greener and more environmentally friendly transport system.

To facilitate the expansion of the charging infrastructure, local authorities will be encouraged to allocate space for construction projects and provide subsidies. This proactive approach aims to incentivize public and private entities to actively participate in the development of charging facilities. In line with this, companies will be welcomed to contribute by introducing innovative business models, such as shared charging and mobile charging services, which can further enhance the utilization of the charging network.

The ambitious charging infrastructure plan represents China’s commitment to sustainable transportation and reducing reliance on fossil fuel-powered vehicles. By addressing the challenge of limited charging availability, the government aims to propel the widespread adoption of NEVs, playing a crucial role in the country’s efforts to achieve greener and more environmentally friendly mobility.

BYD has incorporated a fresh Glacier Blue color choice into the Han DM-i Champion Edition. This latest vehicle model comes equipped with the FSD variable damping suspension system as a standard feature, while select models offer the option to be equipped with the DiSus-C intelligent damping body control system (with hardware already installed and an OTA upgrade planned for later this year).

In terms of dimensions, the Han DM-i Champion Edition boasts measurements of 4975mm in length, 1910mm in width, and 1495mm in height, with a wheelbase spanning 2920mm. These specifications highlight the vehicle’s well-proportioned and spacious design.

In terms of configuration, the car offers an impressive range of cutting-edge features. Notable among them is the high-efficiency heat pump air conditioner, designed to operate within a wide temperature range. Additionally, the car comes equipped with a convenient mobile phone NFC car key for seamless access. Safety is prioritized with the inclusion of a BSD blind spot monitoring system, ensuring drivers stay aware of their surroundings. Furthermore, the car boasts a W-HUD head-up display, providing drivers with a clear and convenient information display while on the road.

When it comes to power, the new car utilizes a plug-in hybrid system, combining a blade battery and a 1.5Ti engine. This configuration offers customers multiple options to suit their needs. Retaining the version with a pure electric range of 121km, BYD has introduced an exciting addition—an extended pure electric range version, reaching an impressive 200km. For extended journeys, the hybrid mode provides a remarkable range of 1260km, with a fuel consumption rate of just 4.5L per 100 kilometers. Moreover, the car supports 6KW external discharge, allowing for flexible and convenient charging options.

With Han DM-p God of War Edition, the company has worked on design, style, and luxury. The exterior of the Han DM-p God of War Edition boasts a distinctive appearance, thanks to the use of BASF’s third-generation black paint. To enhance its allure, the car is adorned with special black aluminum powder and a tasteful blend of glass flakes, resulting in a delicate shimmer. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with the War God Edition sports appearance package, which includes carbon black wheels, a matte black logo, black metal triangular windows and borders, and eye-catching golden armor yellow high-performance four-piston calipers.

Inside the car, the luxurious theme continues with high-end black suede seats, door panels, passenger-side panels, and center console armrests, all contributing to an opulent ambiance. The interior is further enhanced with black carbon fiber material, yellow stitching, and gold-yellow safety belts, adding a touch of sophistication and elegance to the overall design.

BYD Auto’s official Weibo account made an announcement stating that the combined orders for the Han DM-i Champion Edition and DM-p God of War Edition had surpassed 8,051 units on the launch day itself. Among these orders, 35.9% were for the 200 km models. The 200 KM models specifically refer to the 200KM version of the Han DM-i Champion Edition and the Han DM-p God of War Edition. This overwhelming response indicates a strong market demand for these electric vehicle variants offered by BYD Auto.

In an effort to boost the sluggish growth of its electric vehicle (EV) market, the Chinese government is aggressively working towards the expansion of charging infrastructure for new energy vehicles like electric cars. Simultaneously, they are also focusing on implementing policies that incentivize and facilitate the transition to battery-powered cars among rural motorists.

Following a routine meeting, the cabinet expressed that the enhancement of charging infrastructure for new energy vehicles has the potential to unlock rural consumption and contribute to the growth of rural tourism. This initiative is expected to invigorate rural revitalization efforts, providing fresh momentum to the overall development of rural areas.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the National Administration of Energy (NEA), the leading authorities in economic planning, have issued a collective appeal for the accelerated deployment of charging infrastructure in remote areas.

The NDRC has emphasized the importance of financial incentives offered by local governments to facilitate the establishment of EV charging stations. They have urged for an extended reach of these facilities, ensuring coverage in additional counties, villages, and rural highways. Furthermore, the commission has called upon electric car manufacturers to broaden their product portfolios, aiming to better cater to the unique demands of rural markets

Xin Guobin, the vice minister at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, revealed that the government is actively examining policies to stimulate auto consumption and support the modernization of China’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market. This comes as the NEV market faces challenges arising from weak domestic demand.

The limited purchasing power among rural residents stands as a significant obstacle to the widespread adoption of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in rural areas, said Zhang Xiang, a visiting professor at Huanghe Science and Technology University’s engineering department. To address this challenge, Zhang suggests that cash incentives provided by local governments and car manufacturers, along with the introduction of affordable car models, will play a pivotal role in driving NEV adoption in rural regions.

The government’s focus on promoting auto consumption, supporting NEV market modernization, and expediting the establishment of advanced manufacturing clusters reflects their commitment to bolstering the innovation-driven growth of China’s industries and securing the robustness of the nation’s industrial supply chains.

The CEO of Ford recently told reporters that the company has to rethink its brand and strategy for the Chinese automobile market. The statement arrives amid the booming electric vehicle market in the region. So here are all the details.

Ford seeks to be more competitive in China

According to Chief Executive Jim Farley, “We’re going to have to rethink what the Ford brand means in a place like China.” The senior executive made this statement highlighting the competitive market for EVs in China. He believes that Ford Motor Co needs to rethink its brand for the world’s largest automobile market. The official told reporters during a charity event in Detroit that “It can’t be like middle of the market. It’s totally over filled.”

Unfortunately, he did not elaborate on what exactly this means for the popular American car maker. But based on market reports, Ford saw a decline in sales in China during the first quarter of this year. It sales and market share also fell during this period. On the other hand, automakers that sold battery powered electric and plug in hybrid cars saw a boom in sales in Q1 2023.

Furthermore, the market was also led by the Chinese automobile giant, BYD. Ford CEO also added that his visit to China revealed that the only premium brands that were faring well in the Chinese market were focusing on electric only vehicles. These models focused on technology and aspects that improved the drivers overall experience. This wasn’t just in terms of their digital technology but even included their “beautiful” design for every vehicle. He even talked about specific brands that were succeeding in the market, including Xpeng, Li Auto, and NIO.

China has almost doubled its sales of passenger Electric Vehicles (EVs) in 2022 with a reported growth of 87% year on year. A recent report from Counterpoint’s Global Passenger Electric Vehicle Model Sales Tracker states that one in four cars sold in China is an EV. It further states that, amongst the top 10 fastest-growing EV markets in the world, China stood in second position in terms of sales right behind Japan which showed a 119% year-on-year growth in 2022.

In 2022, BYD emerged as the largest EV seller in China with a 29.7% market share followed by GM, Tesla, Geely, and Changan. In the last quarter of 2022, BYD Song dethroned the most famous Wuling Hongguang MINI EV as the top-selling EV model in the country.

China the most vibrant EV market in the World:

According to Soumen Mandal, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint, currently, China has the most versatile and vibrant EV market in the world. All the famous as well as not-so-famous EV companies offer their products and services in the country as it is the largest EV market in the world with more than 50% of global production. China’s EV market is served by almost 94 different brands that together offer more than 300 different models to its customers. The EV scene in China is so versatile that you can easily find a cheap EV with a starting price of $5000 to something as costly as $90,000 and above.

81% of the Chinese EV market is dominated by domestic companies which include top players like BYD, Wuling, Chery, Changan, and GAC. The remaining 19% is filled by foreign companies like Tesla and Volkswagen. Apart from these automobile giants, China is also home to some of the best EV startups like Nio, Xpeng, Neta, AITO, IM Motors, Zeeker, Aiways, and Livan which are performing quite well despite the tough competition from foreign and established domestic companies.

Why are the Chinese favoring EVs?

Environmental health and government policies are the driving forces behind the tremendous growth of EVs in China. According to the survey conducted by Rakuten Insight, about 66 percent of the Chinese consumers who considered buying an electric car stated that they preferred an electric car over a conventional one because it is environment-friendly.

Beijing has set a goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2060 and to achieve this goal the government offered major subsidies for EVs. For the past 12 years, China has designed its policy and funding to encourage the sales of Environment-friendly vehicles. Also, the country has the world’s biggest EV charging network and the rapid expansion of the charging infrastructure makes it easier and cheaper for consumers to travel across the country.

The government policies have ultimately paid off as last year in November alone, 36% of new vehicles taking to the mainland roads were either pure electric or plug-in hybrid cars and today one in four vehicles sold in China is an EV. According to experts at Swiss Bank UBS, by 2030 three out of every five vehicles sold in China will be EV.

What is the future of China’s EV market?

China’s EV boom was mainly driven by strong government subsidies and funding. Between 2020 and 2022, around two million vehicles were eligible for subsidies. However, since 2019, subsidies have been reduced progressively to date and in 2023, no new budget has been allocated for granting subsidies to EVs. Apart from the announced renewal of the 5% vehicle purchase tax exemption policy for new energy vehicles, there have been no announcements for renewal of the cash subsidies on EVs. This may lead to slower growth in the coming years.

Right now the Chinese EV market is witnessing a major price war which was started by Tesla and picked up by other players like BYD, Ford, Xpeng, and more. This price war may create additional demand and sustain EV sales in 2023. Though in the short term, the EV market may struggle due to the economic downturn and policy changes, the long-term outlook for China’s EV market is extremely positive as the country aims to reduce its particle emissions significantly and reach carbon neutrality. China had previously committed to creating a 50% EV market by 2035. However, right now this number looks too easy as the share of EVs in the passenger car market will exceed 50% and surpass traditional energy cars before 2030 itself.
