A new Government report has revealed that smartphone shipments in China have nearly doubled this January, over the same month last year.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-304808 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/China-smartphone-sale.jpg?x10805" alt="China smartphone sale" width="900" height="600" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/China-smartphone-sale.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/China-smartphone-sale-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/China-smartphone-sale-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/China-smartphone-sale-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/China-smartphone-sale-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-smartphones/chinas-smartphone-shipments-rebound-to-pre-pandemic-levels-in-january-government-data-idUSKBN2A90FY" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Reuters</em> </a>report, shipments in the region has surged significantly by 94.3 percent annually, reaching 39.6 million units in January 2021. The information was published by the China Academy of Information and Communications (CAICT). Back in January 2020, smartphone shipments only reached 20.4 million units, which is lower than the 32.1 million units shipped in January 2019. In other words, the first month of this year has already outperformed the year before COVID-19 hit and even managed to show a sizeable recovery over last year.</p>
<p>Furthermore, the supply chain complications and reduced consumer spending due to the pandemic also caused the decline of industry as a whole. Although now, the segment has recovered along with the local economy. Experts project that shipments and sales in China will mostly recover this year, however, the nation&#8217;s top OEM, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei</a>, is still weighed by the US sanctions that have hampered its smartphone business.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-346373 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/october-ediiton1.jpg?x10805" alt="China" width="640" height="640" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/october-ediiton1.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/october-ediiton1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/october-ediiton1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/october-ediiton1-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></p>
<p>Huawei&#8217;s shipments have fell by 44 percent year on year in the final quarter of last year. Other vendors have since taken advantage of this, like Apple, which has seen a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/12/apples-market-share-q4-2020-china/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">bump in its smartphone sales after the launch of its latest iPhone 12 lineup</a>. Similarly, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/06/idc-china-smartphone-market-q3-2020/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi also registered impressive growth</a> during this period as well, filling up the void left by Huawei.</p>

<p>As per an <a href="https://www.ithome.com/0/532/796.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>ITHome</em> </a>report, the smartphone market in mainland China reached 84 million units in shipments in the fourth quarter of 2020. This marked a year on year decline of 4 percent last year. Talking about annual shipments, the overall handset shipments fell by 11 percent year on year, reaching 330 million units. One of the reasons of the deterioration of the market was also due to Huawei&#8217;s weaker performance due to US sanctions that has severely impacted its smartphone operations.</p>
<p>In the final quarter of last year, Huawei (including Honor) shipped a total of 18.8 million units, marking its market share fell from 41 percent in the third quarter to 22 percent in the fourth quarter. Oppo rose to the second spot during this time with a total shipments of 17.2 million smartphones, marking a year on year increase of 23 percent. Similarly, Vivo also saw a healthy growth of 20 percent during the same period with 15.7 million handset unit shipments.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-368361 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/20210129_102206_839.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="820" height="905" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/20210129_102206_839.jpg 820w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/20210129_102206_839-272x300.jpg 272w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/20210129_102206_839-768x848.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/20210129_102206_839-696x768.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/20210129_102206_839-381x420.jpg 381w" sizes="(max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px" /></p>
<p>Furthermore, Apple also saw great performance in China over its last couple of years, wit shipments reaching 15.3 million units in the final quarter, acquiring a market share of 18 percent in Q4 2020. Xiaomi arrived fifth in the ranking list with 12.2 million units in shipments, marking a year on year increase of a whopping 52 percent. As per Canalys, &#8220;Huawei’s shipments in the fourth quarter shrank by nearly 50% year-on-year. Although the demand for Huawei’s products is still huge, the company will not be able to meet the demand in the foreseeable future. Other leading manufacturers are targeting this opportunity.&#8221;</p>

An earlier report by Canalys showed that the total number of phones shipped in China fell short of the 100 million mark in a quarter and that was the first time the market was witnessing such slump since 2013. A fresh report by Digitimes shows that the market may have experienced a rebound in the second quarter of the year. The report indicated that the market grew by 2.2% year-over-year (YOY). The growth is also estimated to be 10% higher than that of Q1, peaking at 94.2 million units. This is slightly higher than the less than 90 million units shipped between January and March.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/huawei-oppo-vivo.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-137878" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/huawei-oppo-vivo.jpg?x10805" alt="huawei" width="691" height="461" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/huawei-oppo-vivo.jpg 691w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/huawei-oppo-vivo-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 691px) 100vw, 691px" /></a></p>
<p>The impressive Q2 2018 shipment is said to have been spurred by amazing performances by the top four market leaders namely <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a>, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a>, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/oppo">Oppo</a> and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/vivo">Vivo</a>.  The four companies had improvements in their shipments of up to 10% in the second quarter. However, the projections for the four companies by Digitimes for the remaining quarters of the year don&#8217;t look too promising.  Xiaomi is expected to report flat shipments for the last half of the year, while Huawei, Oppo and Vivo could see single or even double-digit percentage declines domestically for the last two quarters of 2018.</p>

<p>Digitimes also captured the sales of Apple&#8217;s iPhone models which notably was on the decline. Sales of iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8 declined on a sequential basis, as did sales of older iPhone models. But that could potentially change in the remaining quarters with the three new models that Apple is expected to unveil and launch next month. In addition, the report also reaffirms Huawei&#8217;s global surge which saw it <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/08/01/huawei-surpasses-apple-second-rank-global-smartphone-market-share/">surpass Apple to emerge as the second largest smartphone manufacturer</a> in the world.</p>
