In almost every part of China, people are talking about this impressive EV. But what’s causing all this chatter?
1. Competitive Pricing Strategy

Xiaomi is playing the long game aiming to capture the market with competitive pricing. The SU7 stands out due to its competitive pricing strategy. Positioned to rival renowned EV manufacturers like Tesla and BYD, Xiaomi offers the SU7 at a price point that undercuts its competitors by a significant margin. With three variants—Standard, Pro, and Max—priced between RMB 215,900 ($29,870) and RMB 299,900 ($41,500), the SU7 presents an enticing option for consumers seeking high-quality and stylish electric vehicles at an affordable price. This pricing strategy has made the SU7 accessible to a broader segment of Chinese consumers, fueling its popularity in the market.

2. Boasts a Range of Up to 800km

The Xiaomi SU7 boasts impressive technological advancements and specifications that have captured the attention of Chinese consumers. With claims of surpassing Tesla’s Model 3 in over 90% of specifications, including a longer starting range of 700 kilometers and rapid charging capabilities, the SU7 promises a superior driving experience. Xiaomi’s commitment to innovation and technological excellence resonates with China’s tech-savvy consumers, who eagerly embrace cutting-edge features in their vehicles.

3. Strong Brand Reputation

Xiaomi’s strong brand reputation in China plays a pivotal role in the fame of the SU7. Renowned for delivering innovative and reliable products, Xiaomi has earned the trust and loyalty of Chinese consumers over the years. The company’s foray into the electric vehicle market capitalizes on its established reputation, instilling confidence among consumers regarding the quality and performance of the SU7. Xiaomi’s brand recognition acts as a driving force behind the popularity of its electric vehicle offerings in China.

4. Rapid Production and High Consumer Demand

The rapid production milestones and overwhelming consumer demand for the Xiaomi SU7 underscores its fame in China. With orders exceeding 50,000 units within the first 27 minutes of sales, the SU7 has garnered significant attention and interest from Chinese and even global consumers. The impressive response reflects the high demand for affordable and high-quality electric vehicles in China’s evolving automotive landscape. The widespread fame of the SU7 in the country is also bolstered by Xiaomi’s glorious history, highlighting its capacity to promptly fulfill consumer demand and efficiently scale up production.

5. Visionary Leadership and Ambitious Goals

Xiaomi’s visionary leadership, spearheaded by CEO Lei Jun, underscores the ambitious goals set for the SU7 and Xiaomi’s broader ambitions in the automotive industry. With aspirations of becoming one of the top five automakers globally within the next 15 to 20 years, Xiaomi demonstrates a long-term commitment to leveraging its technological expertise and brand reputation in the EV market. Lei Jun’s strategic vision and ambitious goals amplify the significance of the SU7 in China’s electric vehicle landscape, positioning it as a formidable competitor to established players in the industry. The consumers are eager to be a part of this vision, leading to a surge in demand as they strive to acquire the SU7.

Xiaomi’s first Electric vehicle the SU7 sedan has ignited unprecedented consumer interest. With pre-orders surpassing 88,898 within the initial 24-hour window, it’s evident that Xiaomi has struck a chord with prospective buyers. However, the surge in demand has led to an unexpected challenge, an extended delivery waiting period.

Prospective buyers eager to own Xiaomi’s SU7 are now confronted with the reality of lengthy delivery periods, stretching up to seven months in some cases. The allure of Xiaomi’s sleek design and advanced features is undeniable, but the wait for delivery is testing the patience of even the most enthusiastic customers.

source: Xiaomi SU7

For the standard SU7 model, priced at 215,900 yuan ($29,870), delivery times are estimated between 18 to 21 weeks. Similarly, the SU7 Pro and the AWD SU7 Max models are facing comparable waiting periods, with deliveries expected within the same timeframe. The anticipation surrounding Xiaomi’s limited-edition “Founder’s Edition” further exacerbates the situation, as the initial batch of 5,000 units sold out instantaneously, leaving many hopeful buyers anxiously awaiting news of a second release.

The prolonged delivery timelines come as a surprise to many, especially considering the swift pre-order uptake and Xiaomi’s reputation for efficient production and distribution in other product categories. Nevertheless, the sheer volume of orders has presented logistical challenges that Xiaomi must navigate to meet consumer expectations.

Despite the delays, Xiaomi remains optimistic about the SU7’s prospects in the competitive EV market. The vehicle’s impressive specifications, including a range of up to 830 kilometers (516 miles) for the Pro variant, position it as a formidable contender against established players. Moreover, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, has outlined ambitious plans for the company’s future in the automotive industry, signaling a long-term commitment to innovation and growth.

As consumers eagerly await the arrival of their SU7 sedans, Xiaomi faces the dual challenge of managing expectations and maintaining momentum in a rapidly evolving market. While the extended delivery times may test the patience of eager buyers, they also underscore the undeniable appeal of Xiaomi’s entry into the EV arena. In the coming months, all eyes will be on Xiaomi as it navigates this critical phase of its automotive journey, balancing supply chain efficiency with the growing demand for its groundbreaking electric sedan.

BYD, the world’s foremost electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has introduced its latest model, the e2 Glory Edition in the Chinese market. Priced at $12500 (89,800 yuan), this updated version marks a substantial 12.65% reduction compared to its predecessor, signaling BYD’s strategic response to the growing demand for budget-friendly EV options in China.

The e2 Glory Edition is positioned as a family-oriented pure electric vehicle, boasting a range of 405 kilometers. Equipped with a blade battery pack and a single motor offering 70 kW peak power, it aims to provide consumers with a compelling combination of style, efficiency, and comfort at an affordable price.

This move aligns with BYD’s overarching strategy to solidify its dominance in the EV market and accelerate the transition from traditional petrol vehicles to electric alternatives. By offering competitive pricing on models like the e2 Glory Edition, BYD seeks to appeal to a broader demographic, particularly middle-income consumers who are increasingly price-conscious in the face of economic uncertainty.

The decision to slash prices on the e2 Glory Edition mirrors a broader trend in the Chinese EV market, with BYD spearheading a discount war among industry rivals. Competitors such as Xpeng, Zeekr, and SAIC-GM-Wuling have also responded by reducing prices for their respective EV offerings, underscoring the fierce competition in the sector.

Moreover, BYD’s strategic direction involves updating its lineup of affordable models, including the Qin Plus and Chaser 05, with lower-priced editions. This comprehensive product update underscores BYD’s commitment to replacing traditional gasoline vehicles with new energy alternatives on a larger scale, to capture a greater market share and accelerate EV adoption nationwide.

BYD’s initiative to offer more accessible EV options underscores its determination to maintain competitiveness and drive industry-wide changes in China’s automotive landscape.

This is in addition to the underwhelming performance of the Cybertruck. Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO has further highlighted the tensions by alleging that China’s auto industry would destroy other automakers if not for global trade barriers.

BYD is the leading Chinese EV maker

The Chinese EV industry has seen a period of rapid growth that has continued to feed its large population. The industry has positioned itself well ahead of other markets and continues to expand beyond the Mainland. Chinese automakers leverage several key fundamentals to deliver affordable and durable EVs, giving them a higher bargaining edge.

The Tesla Quarterly Earnings call provided the avenue for Musk to acknowledge the pace and efficiency of the Chinese EV industry. He however raised an alarm that the Chinese EV industry could demolish other automakers in the absence of relevant trade barriers. Musk stated that he was of the view that Chinese EV companies will have significant successes outside of China depending on the applicable trade tariffs. The influx of Chinese EVs in markets across the globe has led to claims of possibly extinguishing domestic markets. This has led some governments to put in place protectionist tariffs and regulations to avoid being flooded by cheap Chinese EVs. There is also the possibility of a probe by the European Commission.

Tesla became the first foreign automaker to set up shop in China without being required to have a joint partnership with domestic brands. Stellantis has also highlighted the issue pointed out by Musk on the Chinese auto industry. Tesla has already lost its top position as the leading EV maker, with BYD, a Chinese company mounting the top position. Tesla’s released earnings report indicated that the company failed to meet market expectations for Q4 2023.

Wuling the Chinese automobile maker, has officially launched its much-anticipated Starlight model, setting a new standard in the electric vehicle (EV) market. Unveiled on December 6, this sleek and innovative sedan is the latest offering from SGMW, a joint venture between GM, SAIC, and Wuling.

Positioned competitively at 88,800 yuan (US $12487), the Wuling Starlight introduces two versions boasting impressive ranges of 70 km and 150 km according to CLTC standards. The pricing, starting from 88,800 yuan, reflects Wuling’s commitment to delivering efficient and affordable electric mobility options to the market.

At the heart of Starlight’s excellence is its proprietary technology, including the innovative “Wuling Lingxi Hybrid System” and the cutting-edge “Shenlian Battery.” These advancements contribute to an exceptional low-power consumption rate of 3.98L/100km, surpassing industry standards according to WLTC standards.

The aesthetic appeal of the Starlight is driven by the “Star wing aesthetic” design concept, featuring eye-catching elements such as a distinctive wing-type front grille, star-colored light groups, full-LED automatic headlights, and star-ring tail lights. The sedan’s dynamic profile, with its short front overhang and long rear overhang ratio, culminates in a striking fastback shape.

Inside Starlight, an emphasis on comfort and technology is evident. The sedan offers a modern and luxurious experience with two interior options: dark black and quicksand color.
Xpeng is gearing up for a robust fourth quarter with a projected surge in deliveries. Anticipating between 59,500 and 63,500 vehicle deliveries from October to December, the company expects a substantial 59% increase from the third quarter. This optimistic outlook is attributed to the popularity of Xpeng’s new models, strategically offered at discounted prices to attract mainland Chinese drivers.

Despite reporting a net loss of US$537 million in the quarter ended September 30, Xpeng remains confident in the positive results of transformative adjustments made earlier in the year. The company’s CEO, He Xiaopeng, is optimistic about accelerated growth in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Xpeng’s third-quarter revenue saw a notable 68.5% quarterly increase to 8.53 billion yuan, aligning with analysts’ estimates. The vehicle margin, indicating the difference between the selling price and tangible costs, showed improvement, standing at minus 6.1%, up from the minus 8.6% in the April to June period. However, Xpeng attributed the negative vehicle margin to aggressive sales promotions and the cancellation of EV purchase cash subsidies by Beijing.

The company did not specify when promotional activities would end, leaving room for further speculation about the impact on future financial performance. Xpeng’s new model, the G6 SUV, played a pivotal role in the company’s success, particularly during discount periods, with its perceived quality and performance resonating well with consumers.

Xpeng, often considered a key player in the Chinese EV market alongside Li Auto and Nio, is positioning itself as China’s response to Tesla. The G6 SUV, highlighted as a competitor to Tesla’s Model Y, boasts semi-autonomous driving capabilities powered by X NGP (Navigation Guided Pilot) software.

In October, Xpeng achieved a milestone with a record 20,002 deliveries, marking a 31% increase from the previous month and surpassing its previous record set in December 2021. Competitor Li Auto also broke its delivery record in October, handing over 40,422 vehicles to mainland Chinese customers, marking a seventh consecutive monthly increase.

As Xpeng continues to navigate the competitive landscape of the Chinese EV market, the company’s leadership remains optimistic about future prospects. With an eye on enhanced free cash flow in the current quarter, Xpeng aims to set the stage for long-term scalable profitability, reinforcing its commitment to sustained success in the evolving electric vehicle industry.

In a bid to protect European Union (EU) producers from what it perceives as an influx of competitively priced Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) propped up by state subsidies, the European Commission has initiated an investigation that could potentially lead to punitive tariffs. This move comes as the Chinese share of the European EV market has surged to 8% this year, sparking concerns of unfair competition.

“Global markets are now flooded with cheaper electric cars. And their price is kept artificially low by huge state subsidies,” declared European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her annual address to the EU parliament. This announcement is seen by many in Brussels as part of her bid for re-appointment for a second term.

The investigation, expected to last up to 13 months, aims to evaluate whether Chinese EVs are benefiting from subsidies provided by the Chinese government, thus gaining an unfair advantage over European counterparts. EU producers have expressed growing unease about this influx of Chinese EVs and are concerned about the potential impact on their market share.

The Chinese electric vehicle industry has witnessed substantial growth in recent years, driven in part by generous government subsidies and incentives aimed at promoting the adoption of green technologies. These incentives have significantly reduced the cost of Chinese EVs, making them more attractive to consumers in the EU market.

The European Commission’s move to investigate Chinese EVs echoes similar actions taken against other industries in the past, such as the ongoing trade dispute over steel and aluminum tariffs with the United States. If the investigation reveals that Chinese EVs are indeed benefiting from unfair subsidies, it could lead to the imposition of tariffs to level the playing field.

China, for its part, has defended its policies, emphasizing its commitment to sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions. However, it remains to be seen how the Chinese government will respond to the EU’s investigation and potential tariff considerations.

The outcome of this investigation will have significant implications for the European electric vehicle market, with the potential to either safeguard the interests of EU producers or maintain the influx of competitively priced Chinese EVs. As global competition in the electric vehicle industry intensifies, this issue underscores the challenges faced by both European and Chinese manufacturers in navigating international trade dynamics while striving to achieve sustainability goals.

Europe’s Electric Vehicle Market:

As the electric vehicle (EV) revolution accelerates, Europe has emerged as a thriving hub for electric mobility. With stringent emissions regulations, government incentives, and a rapidly expanding charging infrastructure, the continent’s EV market has witnessed remarkable growth.

Europe’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions has led to the rapid expansion of its EV market. Stringent emissions regulations have pushed automakers to introduce a wide array of electric models. Government incentives, such as tax breaks and subsidies, have made EVs more appealing to consumers, contributing to their rising popularity.

Among the top players in Europe’s EV market, Tesla reigns as a global leader. Notably, it’s followed closely by traditional giants like Volkswagen, BMW, Audi, Renault, and Mercedes-Benz. These automakers have diversified their portfolios with impressive electric models, catering to various consumer preferences.

Despite its growth, Europe’s EV market faces challenges. There’s a need for continued investment in charging infrastructure to alleviate range anxiety. Additionally, addressing the limitations of the electric vehicle range remains a priority for the industry. With these developments, Europe is poised to remain a key player in the global transition to electric mobility.

In a recent interview with CNN, Ford Motor Executive Chairman Bill Ford expressed his belief that the United States is not yet adequately prepared to compete with China in the field of electric vehicle (EV) production.

Ford highlighted China’s rapid development and large-scale production of EVs, noting that they have swiftly become major players in the global market and are even exporting their products. He emphasized the need for the United States to be prepared for the arrival of Chinese EV manufacturers in the country.

While Chinese EV companies have yet to establish a significant presence in the American market, Ford acknowledged that it is only a matter of time before they expand their operations to the US. In response to this anticipated competition, Ford underlined the importance of readiness and stated that steps are being taken by the American automotive industry to prepare for future challenges in the EV sector.

Ford’s remarks reflect the recognition within the automotive industry that China has made substantial strides in EV production and is currently ahead in terms of scale and market presence. The comments also underscore the urgency felt by American automakers to enhance their capabilities and stay competitive in the rapidly growing global EV market, where China has emerged as a dominant force.

The recent revelation of Ford Motor’s plan to invest $3.5 billion in building an electric vehicle (EV) battery facility in Michigan has sparked interest, primarily due to its partnership with Chinese battery company CATL. This collaboration has prompted U.S. Senator Marco Rubio to call on the Biden administration to carefully examine the details of the agreement.

Bill Ford clarified that the Michigan battery plant would be owned entirely by Ford and staffed by their employees. The collaboration with CATL would involve licensing their technology for use by Ford engineers. Ford emphasized that the purpose of the partnership was to enable their engineers to learn from the technology and subsequently utilize it independently.

Ford’s clarification aimed to assuage any apprehensions regarding the partnership and underline the company’s commitment to leveraging the opportunity to enhance its EV capabilities. By establishing the battery plant and collaborating with CATL, Ford aims to acquire valuable knowledge and insights that will contribute to their own EV technology advancements and help them stay competitive in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.

The Electric Vehicle (EV) price war started by Tesla in China has now affected the entire auto industry as investors and traders are abandoning Chinese automobile stocks. Investors fear that the Chinese automobile market will not revive quickly enough and the ongoing price war will further reduce profitability.

China which is the world’s largest automobile market is going through a sluggish economy. The zero covid policy which led to periodic lockdowns combined with Beijing’s crackdown on industries and the real estate crisis all led to the economic downturn in China. The ongoing US-China trade war, rising inflation, and impending global recession have also made consumers cautious and reluctant to invest.

To get back consumer interest, revive the demand, and capture the market, automobile companies in China are slashing their vehicle prices which has led to a fall in Chinese Automobile stocks. Last week BYD stocks fell 11 percent in Hong Kong and 7.8 percent in Shenzhen. Shares of famous Chinese EV makers like Li Auto, Nio, and Xpeng fell up to 15% and SAIC recorded a 6.7% fall in Shanghai.

Automobile Price War in China:

To revive the sluggish demand for EVs, Tesla first slashed its price in October 2022. The company reduced the prices of Model 3 and Model Y by as much as 9.4%. A second round of price cuts happened in January when the company cut prices for all versions of its China-made Model 3 and Model Y. The base variant of model 3 has been reduced by 13.5% while the starting price for Model Y has been slashed by 10%.

Following the price cut, Tesla saw an increase in sales which then led BYD the world’s biggest EV maker to slash its price. The price war which started with Tesla and BYD affected many domestic and international players who then joined the battle. Last week, premium automobile companies like BMW and Mercedes and domestic companies like SAIC and Guangzhou Automobile reduced their vehicle prices in order to revive consumer demand.

Tesla reduced its prices somewhere between 6 to 13.5% and BYD reduced its price on the famous Dynasty series by up to 7% this year. However, the biggest discount was offered by the French automaker Citreon who slashed the price of its C6 model by almost 40%.

Wang Zheng, chief investment officer at Jingxi Investment said that the ongoing price war is a sign of weak consumer confidence. He further added that customers are not ready to spend as they expect a slow economic recovery. This in turn has caused investors to lose trust in the Chinese automobile industry.

Huawei recently unveiled its plan to target high-end Electric Vehicle (EV) customers. Though the company has no plans to make its own EVs, it has partnered with already established domestic automakers to penetrate the EV market.

When asked about its EV plans, the CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu said that the company planned to sell more than a million EVs powered by Huawei’s Ecosystem, in 2025. The base variant of EVs using the Huawei software would cost no less than $29020 (RMB 200,000). Essentially Huawei plans to partner with automakers who compete with market leaders like BYD and Tesla which sell EVs at an average price of $33000.

Huawei’s EV Partnership

Huawei which entered the EV market in 2021 partnered with companies like Seres, Changan, and BAIC to sell EVs in China. It is also working on partnerships with JAC Motors and Chery Automobile CO. Ltd, a state-owned automaker known for its partnership with Jaguar Land Rover.

Huawei, which was one of the top tech companies, was crushed under the heavy sanctions levied by the US over the past few years. Once the company entered the infamous US Entity Trade list, it was boycotted by all US firms and suffered a huge loss in its business.

In 2021, Huawei’s revenue shrank 28.6% to 636.8 billion yuan ($93.7 billion), as it could not bypass the US-led sanctions and trade bans over the past three years. In fact, this revenue loss is also one of the major reasons for the company to step into the lucrative EV industry. As China is the biggest EV market in the world, Huawei also wants a share of the pie. Hence it partnered with local automakers to dive into the EV market.

Huawei’s EV Journey

Huawei announced its plan to enter the EV industry in 2021 and unveiled the first Huawei-powered Electric SUV the Aito M5 in September 2022. The telecommunication giant partnered with Chinese automaker Seres to supply technology for the sports utility vehicle, which was an instant hit in China. Within 4 months of its launch, Aito M5 outsold big EV brands like Nio and Volkswagen and, in fact, gave stiff competition to Tesla’s popular EV the Model Y.

However, the unexpected sales in the initial period were actually fueled by patriotism rather than consumer demand. The Chinese people were already angry with Washington’s take on their country, and the added sanction on companies like ZTE and Huawei awakened their patriotic instincts. At the time of the launch of Aito M5, Chinese President Xi Jinping asked his citizens to refocus on the nation’s economy by buying locally. This led to a frenzy of nationalism and aided the sales of Huawei technology-powered Aito M5.

However once the nationalist sentiments cooled down Aito M5 sales, started facing pressure from factors like the global economic downturn, COVID-19 policies, weak domestic market, and cutthroat competition which affected all the EV makers in China. In 2022, the company saw below-target sales for Aito as it delivered just 76,180 cars.

China’s automobile industry in general has suffered due to its Zero-Covid policy which resulted in reduced demand, supply shortage, and a standstill in production. Now, the EV makers in China are trying to revive their sales by lowering prices and offering better features. Industry leader Tesla has already cut down the price of Model 3 and Y by almost 13%. Recently, Seres also slashed its price for Aito M5 to retain its market. Amidst this tough competition, Huawei plans to enter the EV market by targeting high-end consumers who can pay the price for its technology.

The latest data from the State Council of the People’s Republic of China shows that the country is on an expansion spree as it adds a large number of charging ports for Electric Vehicles (EVs).

When it comes to Electric Vehicles, China is the global leader, with experts believing it to become even more dominant in the coming years. China has shown a staggering 113% increase in its EV sale in just the first half of 2022. Compared to this, North America has reported a 49% increase and the EU showed a paltry 9% increase in EV sales.

China’s BYD leads the Global EV sales followed by Tesla and Volkswagen. This unprecedented increase in the sales of EVs has led to the rapid expansion of EV charging points across the country. Also, since economic stability is a top priority for the nation, massive investments are being made in infrastructure, which has also led to accelerated growth in the number of charging stations.

In 2022 alone, China added 2.59 million new points which take the total number of charging points in the country to a whopping 5.21 million. It also built 1973 battery swapping stations and has more than 10000 power battery recycling service outlets. As compared to China, Europe, the second largest EV market, has only 400,000 public charging stations.

China is aiming to create a rapidly advancing New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Sector, and the increasing number of charging ports is in line with this goal. In 2022, NEVs hold a 25.6% share of the Chinese automobile market and by 2025 we can expect an astronomical increase in this number.
