Chinese e-commerce giant JD (Jingdong) has announced an e-sports gaming phone alliance in partnership with players in the gaming industry. The alliance anchors on JD’s expertise in the supply chain, technology, distribution, marketing, and payment solutions to upgrade the gaming ecosystem and to make JD the top choice for customers purchasing gaming devices.

In 2019, China officially recognized esports as an occupation but before the recognition, it has been a booming industry. China’s e-sports market is said to grow 10% annually according to an industry report. The market is expected to hit RMB 270 billion yuan in annual revenue by 2022.

JD previously launched the JD Esports plan in the middle of this year with the aim of expanding to gaming phone hardware, service, and competitions. Based on the plan, JD formed the JDE gaming team and released new gaming-related products from Lenovo, ROG, Black Shark, and Nubia’s Red Magic further promoting the growth of the industry.

The president of JD Mobile Devices, Daniel Tan stated during the conference that: “With the development of the whole industry, gamers’ pursuit of a superior experience is even higher. The JD Esports Plan can provide an integrated service for them, as well as help our partners achieve maximum business value.”

During the ceremony, JD announced a series of services for gamers, including a special trial service, one-hour fast delivery, a special network guarantee, and more. Based on the JD Esports plan, JD will also help train professional gamers, appeal to more fans by working with live streamers on platforms like Huya, create Consumer-to-Manufacturer (C2M) products with brands, and launch brick-and-mortar experience shops.

Chinese smartphone makers have increased their dominance over the Indian market in Q1 2019. Counterpoint research report reveals that four of the top five smartphone companies in India are Chinese and they have captured a solid 66% market share in the previous quarter of the year.

Xiaomi’s market share dropped slightly from 31% in Q1 2018 to 29% in Q1 2019, while Vivo saw a significant rise in its market share during the same period. It went up from just 6% last year to a staggering 12% in the first quarter of this year. Even Realme saw a quick rise in its market share, capturing a decent 7% share of this highly competitive market. OPPO’s market share increased slightly to 7%.

Samsung’s smartphone shipment market share dropped slightly to 23% in the previous quarter, down by 3% YoY. However, the company gained some moment in the feature phone market with an increase from 10% in Q1 2018, to 15% in Q1 2019. Jio still dominates the feature phone segment with 30% market share. The report further notes that the company’s Galaxy S10 series is doing well in the country, driving up its Average Selling Price (ASP) in the region.

Other brands which managed to do well in the Indian market include ASUS, especially in the budget segment, thanks to its Zenfone series. Tecno, and Nokia HMD are doing well too. The rise in the market share of Chinese brands has naturally led to the decline of the Indian brand shipments. The previous quarter recorded the lowest ever market share of shipments from local Indian brands.

Another important point mentioned in the report was that Samsung has surpassed OnePlus in Q1 2019 to become the number one smartphone maker in the premium segment. Given that OnePlus 7 Pro is slated to release on May 14, we could see some changes in this particular segment in the coming quarters.

Finally, most smartphone companies are making a strong push into retail sales. Xiaomi, OnePlus, and even Realme benefitted from an increased focus on brick and mortar stores. So, we could expect the strategy to continue in the coming quarters.

A recent survey conducted by Protolabs has shown that there is an increasing demand for customizable products among customers and that this trend isn’t going to slow down soon. This is coming at a time OEMs seem to virtually copy the design of the competitor such that is getting increasingly difficult to differentiate the various OEMs’ products.

The customization being referred to in this study seems not to be restricted to the design alone but on the software aspect as well. According to the survey findings, consumers are willing to pay more money to customize their devices. About 86% of the respondents think customization has some appeal while 62% say they won’t mind shelling a couple more quid to customize their device.

Further, the survey reveals that more than half of millennials wish they could upgrade their devices more frequently. But the people surveyed disclosed they would prefer the products arriving within three days which suggest they may not be patient enough to wait for the painstaking effort customization would require. At present, we see some customized designs such as the Moto Mods for Motorola Moto Z models. Huawei also created some customization on the latest P20 models with its unique colour options. That is as much as we can get on the hardware aspect. Software customizations are also happening but mostly through third-party apps created to meet specific needs of users. Since what each user look forward to having on their smartphones in terms of the designs and software differs, it may be absolutely impossible for OEMs to chase after customized models according to each individual’s need. The profit is in the mass production and sales of these phones.

After announcing Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro models in India a month ago, Xiaomi released the Pro (that was initially launched in India) variant in China under the Redmi Note 5 branding. It’s a bit confusing and that’s not only because the company is using the same name for different models in different regions, but also because their specs vary, but only slightly. To keep things short, the Note 5 in China is more powerful in the rear camera department, and today, we check out a few of the Redmi Note 5 samples to see if it does well in the photography department.

Before we move on to the rear camera, let’s check out some front camera samples.

Up front, the Chinese Redmi Note 5 comes with a 13MP setup instead of a 20MP setup as found on the Pro variant in India. Lower resolution doesn’t necessary mean lower performance, and the front camera on the Redmi Note 5 does pretty well, especially if are fond of background blur. Note that there is just a single camera up front with LED flash and Xiaomi uses software to get the depth information for bokeh photos. To be honest, the software does pretty well to detect your face and blur out the background effectively. So, if you are into this kind of selfies, you won’t be disappointed. Overall, the quality of the front camera is pretty good in the budget segment.

Coming to the rear camera setup, there’s a dual 12 MP (f/1.9, 1.4 μm) + 5 MP (f/2.0, 1.12 μm) setup with dual-pixel phase detection autofocus. It’s better than the f/2.2, 1.25 μm setup found on the Indian model, and should ideally capture better photos too. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the Indian Redmi Note 5 Pro model with us to compare, but overall, the Chinese model does pretty well, especially in day light photography.

Saturation levels are good in the samples. The phone is quick to focus and you’d be happy with the amount of details captured in each image. In some pictures, you can clearly see that the colors pop out really well. For example, in the image of the salad, the veggies look fresh and colourful. Maybe a tad bit more colourful than in reality, but I’m sure users who are into food photography would love the result.

This was about daytime photography, but when the lights go down, so does the image quality. Noise kicks in and images are dull, and to be honest, there’s nothing spectacular about the Redmi Note 5’s night time photography. You’d manage to take a few decent shots by adjusting your angle and light, but still it won’t be extraordinary. In its defence, the phone isn’t meant to click photos like a $500 flagship, but we could use a slightly better result in low light conditions.

As for the background blur from the rear camera, it works pretty well. AI has helped Xiaomi improve its edge detection algorithms and on most occasions, you’ll get a good bokeh shot from its rear dual camera setup.

The Sony Xperia trio unveiled at CES 2018 and composed of Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra and Xperia L2 is surely the most important smartphone launch of January 2018 by a big brand. The first two handsets represent an incredible improvement over the previous generation. Sony has switched from MediaTek SoCs to Qualcomm SoCs for its most important midrangers: both XA2 and XA2 Ultra are powered by the powerful and power-efficient octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset which has a max frequency of 2.2 GHz. The two handsets also have much narrower bezels compared to the previous generation, 23 MP rear cameras, and the Ultra variant (the one with a monster 6-inch display) has a dual selfie camera with 16 and 8 MP resolution featuring optical stabilization. Sony Xperia L2 still has a MediaTek SoC, but even though it is an entry-level phone it has 3 GB of RAM and a big battery (3300 mAh) paired with very efficient components (the MT6737T chipset and an HD display). The only weak point of these models is that they are pricey.

Nokia 6 (2018)

Nokia 6 (2018) has turned out to be a very stylish device. The phone has been released in very attractive color schemes (black/gold and white/red) and it features a solid aluminum 6000 series unibody design. Bezels are very narrow, even though the Full HD display has a classic 16:9 aspect ratio. HMD Global has made great choices in terms of hardware by putting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC paired with 4 GB of RAM in this phone. For its price (about €220 / $272), this hardware side is very good, especially if we think that Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra with the same SoC are sold at a much higher price. Vivo X20 Plus UD

At the end of 2017, Synaptics has announced the first fingerprint reader which can be embedded inside a display, and it announced that the first handset with this chip would arrive in Q1 2018. It is Vivo X20 Plus UD: the first smartphone with an under-display fingerprint reader. To unlock the phone, the user just needs to touch the display at the location of the fingerprint icon: the OLED panel will illuminate the finger and the reader will recognize the fingerprint. It is a slightly slower authentication method compared with the traditional fingerprint readers, but it allows the presence of a fingerprint reader on the front side even though the display is bezel-less. The rest of the specs (with the exception of the internal storage of 128 GB) remains exactly the same as the Vivo X20 Plus already in the market, but the aesthetics are a bit more attractive thanks to gold borders. Besides the in-display fingerprint reader, the other key features of the device include a huge AMOLED display, a big battery, and a powerful SoC: the Snapdragon 660.

Meizu M6s

With Meizu M6s, the Chinese company has decided to innovate more even with an affordable device. The borderless display and the side-mounted fingerprint reader with a revamped mBack technology that provides more comfortable gestures make this phone much more interesting than its predecessor. It has an Exynos SoC that according to benchmark is much better than Snapdragon 625, so it should provide above-average performance. If the company will continue in this way and release a Meizu M7 Note with similar features, we might soon see one of the best value for money mid-range phones ever.

Elephone U and U Pro

However, it is managing to release very interesting midranges which have a lower price tag than the midrangers from the best brands. Elephone U and U Pro are two borderless phones with powerful SoCs and a big amount of RAM sold at an affordable price. It is actually possible to order them at less than €300 thanks to online street prices. They also have a stunning design with a curved display and a big battery. And the Pro version is among the most affordable phones with the powerful Snapdragon 660 SoC.

Infocus M7s

Unfortunately, Infocus M7s is a phone limited to the Asian market, but it is definitely one of the most attractive midrangers to buy right now. It has been launched in the market with a price tag of just $147 (more or less), but it features 3 GB of RAM and a huge 4000 mAh battery. A big battery paired with very efficient components like the HD display and the low-end MediaTek SoC will provide outstanding battery life. The dual camera is surely another interesting thing as the secondary snapper is a wide-angle sensor. This phone also offers a cool 18:9 display with narrow bezels, so even though the size is 5.7 inches, the handset remains quite compact.

PRO: Very affordable, big battery, nice dual camera for the price

HTC U11 EYEs

With its f/1.7 aperture, the rear camera of this phone not only should be one of the best in its price range, but it should also be able to shoot flagship-level photos. Agreed, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 is an outdated SoC but it still performs fine when compared with the current cheap SoCs in the midrange sector, and the large 3930 mAh battery is the biggest lithium unit ever seen on a last-generation HTC phone.

Samsung Galaxy J2 Pro (2018)

You cannot expect much from this device: its display has low resolution and the amount of RAM is also not great. In fact, we wonder why Samsung is still releasing phones with 1.5 GB of RAM. But on the other hand, it will be possible to purchase this phone at a very affordable price, which should be less than $120 dollars thanks to online street prices. Further, it seems that Asian customers will receive 15 GB of Samsung Cloud storage for free after purchasing the Galaxy J2 Pro (2018).

This means that you can insert a SIM Card and navigate the internet at high speeds, you can connect to a router and can also use the phone as Wi-Fi hotspot to connect other devices. Inside Nokia 3310 4G there is YunOS, an Android fork operating system created by the Alibaba Group. The new handset has the same design as the previous model, it is just a  bit taller and thicker. Its battery is able to last up to 12 days on standby. The phone has no touchscreen and it can be used with a physical 3×4 keyboard. Unfortunately, this phone is a China Mobile exclusive, but HMD Global may decide to unveil an international version at MWC 2018.

The display is bezel-less and its size is not large, so you get a compact phone with a wide display too. On the rear side, there is a pretty nice dual camera with a high resolution which can shoot very detailed photos. We expected a slightly bigger battery, but it is still a sufficient unit. Its design is composed of a suggestive glass back and a metal frame in a eye pleasing design.

Huawei Nova 2S

Huawei Nova 2s is a better, but also a more expensive version of Honor 9. It shares a similar glass back which is very beautiful, and in addition, it has an 18:9 display with narrow bezels which is not present on the Honor 9. The display is wide and comfortable and we like its quality. Another important advantage is the high-level hardware side, with a very powerful SoC and a large quantity of RAM. Android is updated to the latest version available and the battery is above-average. There is also a nice dual camera with a bright aperture.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2

Another phone that we will not include in our ranking but deserves a mention is the ZTE Axon M because of its innovative display. It may not be a great looking smartphone of 2017, but it definitely deserves a mention for its innovative design.

It’s also worth noting that flagships like OnePlus 5T, OPPO R11S are all good looking devices, but given that their design has been replicated by multiple devices, we thought it was best not to include them in this list. For example, OPPO R11S, OP5T, Vivo X20 all have similar designs and they look good too, but they are too similar to each other.

This year, the market has taken a shift from the traditional 16:9 to 18:9 displays. Initially, 18:9 screens were reserved for the premium segment — phones that cost more than $500. But things have changed in the past couple of months, with many budget phones adopting this new display aspect ratio standard, in the hopes that it will give it an edge over others. The Cubot X18 is one of these offerings, featuring a tall 18:9 aspect ratio on a 5.7-inch screen. While the display is one of its biggest selling points, the phone does offer decent overall specs making it worth spending $119.99, at least on paper. But how does it fare in real life? That’s what we try to find out in this review!

Cubot X18 Review: Design

The first thing you notice about the phone is that it’s unusually tall. If you have never used an 18:9 phone before, note that it will take some time to get used to it. However, in terms of handling and one hand operation, things are easy, as the limited width helps you to hold the phone firmly. So, despite its large 5.7-inch screen, it’s only as wide, say as a 5-5.2-inch smartphone. The screen takes up a significant portion of the front, much higher than traditional phones.

The body is made out of plastic, which is of good quality. There’s a solid frame that goes around the phone for rigidity. The buttons lie on the right side of the phone and are decent. The back is removable, so you can replace the battery as well. This also helps the company provide 2 x MicroSIM and 1 dedicated MicroSD card slots.

The overall built quality of the device is good, but I personally feel that the dark blue color on the phone is a bit disappointing. On most occasions, you would mistake it as a black color model and it doesn’t really pop out like the blue on the Doogee BL5000.

Also, the back is a fingerprint magnet and it’s not really easy to clean it to perfection. That said, the corners are curved and the overall design is non-slippery, giving a firm grip. The placement of the fingerprint sensor at the back was perfect for me. It’s not the fastest sensor I have seen, but it’s as good as most fingerprint equipped phones in this segment.

You have no physical buttons on the front, so navigation is through the on-screen buttons. The MicroUSB port and speakers lie at the bottom, while the headphone jack is located on the top.

Apart from the boring blue color shade, I m happy with the overall design of the Cubot X18, including its taller than usual form factor.

Cubot X18 Review: Display

Coming to the screen, which is the highlight of the device — the Cubot X18 features a 5.7-inch  1440 x 720p display with 2.5D glass on top. As I mentioned earlier, this makes it an 18:9 aspect ratio phone. Note that for such a large screen, the resolution might seem too low, but it doesn’t reflect in reality. The screen quality is okay and saturation levels are decent. It might not be the best display in this segment, but it’s good enough for everyday use. But to be honest, the aspect ratio is the only unique thing about the display.

For example, let’s compare the X18’s display with that of the similarly priced Redmi Note 5A. It’s obvious that the saturation levels are not as good as the 5A but it’s not too bad either.  Check out this comparison and decide for yourself.

Cubot X18 Review: Performance 

The overall performance is fluid, which isn’t surprising given that we have seen MT6737T prove its worth in the low-end market. You don’t have any bloatware, just plain vanilla Android 7 experience. Apps open up quickly and things are smooth on most occasions.

Gameplay is also fine. Games like subway surfer run without any glitches and even higher graphic games like Asphalt 8 run well with occasional glitches.

Benchmark Scores are not really great. The phone scores just around 37500 on AnTuTu & 639 &1700 in Geekbench tests which is similar to SD425, but as I have mentioned before, the real life performance is good and that’s what really counts end of the day.

Cubot X18 Review: Camera

The camera is decent but nothing out of the ordinary. You get the same kind of grainy pictures that you would expect from a budget chinese smartphone. One area where it lacked was the amount of details in each picture, but for basic social media photos, the X18 should work. The phone managed to capture images with sufficient lighting along with good colors. But night time photos were less than impressive as I struggled to capture blur free images. On most occasions, the camera produced blurry photos at night, which was disappointing. You can clearly see that the images are blurred in the samples from here. 

Also, when it comes to the front camera the pictures are grainy and it’s hard to get a decent steady shot from the front shooter. The only good thing going for this phone is that you get a front-facing LED flash to light up your selfies.

Cubot X18 Review: Connectivity

The speaker quality is decent. It’s sufficiently loud and punchy.

Connectivity is good, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi-, GPS all work well. Call quality is also pretty good. So, no real issues in this department. The battery is decent, and moderate usage should give you about a day’s use on a single charge. But personally, I would have expected better battery life with the efficient Mediatek chip powering the device.

To wind up, the Cubot X18 is a great option only if you are looking for an 18:9 display on a budget. Other than that, the phone doesn’t have much to offer. You can get better options at a similar price, especially after the new Redmi 5 models hitting the market at a slightly premium price tag.

A new research finding published by Dr Web Research Institute has revealed that some Chinese smartphones are infected with the malware called Triada Trojan. According to the research finding, the Trojan malware comes pre-loaded on the phones. This finding is coming on the heel of the recent discovery by researchers at Google of the malware Lippizan which is capable of recording calls, capture photos and monitor other activity without root access permission.

The Triada Trojan is said to be among the most sophisticated strains of malware around because it has the ability to inject itself into Android parent process called Zygote. The parent process (Zygote) is active all through the phone’s uptime and this allows the Trojan malware to get access to the context of any application that is running at the time. Earlier this year, the Trojan malware was discovered to have adopted sandbox technology, specifically the open source sandbox DroidPlugin which enables it to evade detection much better.

The Chinese smartphones mentioned in the report include the LEAGOO M5 Plus, LEAGOO M8, Nomu S10 and Nomu S20. The research discovered that the core Android library  “libandroid_runtime.so” on the models were injected with the Triada Trojan malware. All the models mentioned are interestingly cheap smartphones and some even cost less than $100. We can’t be certain about how this managed to happen but it will likely be connected with the ROM makers.  It is suspected that the ROM makers, or someone else with access to the Android code used on these devices, could have added the malicious bits to the library before installing it on the devices. Nomu and LEAGOO have been notified of the anomaly but it is unlikely that they will push OTA updates on already shipped models. The malware issue may likely be corrected on the ROM that would be pre-loaded on upcoming models.

AnTuTu yesterday released its April mobile phone user preference report which gives a breakdown in form of a chart, of the level of popularity which the various smartphone display sizes enjoy among the domestic market population in China.

The report reveals what we had already suspected, which is a shift towards large display packing smartphones which falls into the phablet category. Screen sizes measuring between 5 inches to 6 inches accounts for about 82% of the entire market share as documented in the chart. Out of this figure, 5.5-inch displays are the most popular with the lion share of 35.60%. This is followed by the 5.7-inch displays with 10.39% of the market share while 6-inch devices account for 6.38%.

Further, smartphones with 5-inch display size are reducing by the day as it only accounted for 7.66% of the market share while 5.1-inch phones accounted for 15.84% and 5.2-inch phones, 6.06%.  Turns out some persons still find small display packing smartphones fun to use. The AnTuTu listing grouped phones with display sizes ranging between 3.5 inches – 4.9 inches as having a 9.39% share of the market. There are also other sizes which exist and they too grab 8.18% of the market share.

We really don’t know the criteria employed in collating the data but whatever it was, it looks accurate. Large displays are becoming trendy these days in China and manufacturers are even taking it a tad higher by developing large display phones with near absent bezels just like on the Mi Mix. Xiaomi is releasing its next-gen Mi Mix 2 this year, Samsung released a large display device with bezel-less display, and Nubia is tipped as doing the same thing. Even the smaller Chinese manufacturers are not left out as they too are working on bezel-less phone with large displays. A Doogee Mix recently leaked showing a near bezel-less full-screen display. BLUBOO also has a similar device in the work as well as several other Chinese OEM. The competition in the smartphone industry this year will be on several fronts and the display size is likely one of them. Already, the drama has started playing out with the Galaxy S8 already out and doing well in the market.

The component cost of Samsung Galaxy S8 analyzed and released by IHS Markit last week surprised us with the highest costs among the high-end smartphones across the globe, way higher than that of iPhone 7 and others.

Yesterday afternoon, a new IHS Markit report with detailed breakdowns released by insider @Kevin Wang’s diary via his official Weibo account also confirmed this. Samsung Galaxy S8 topped number one with $307.5 for Bill of Materials (BOM) and manufacturing costs.

Analyst Pan Jiutang reposted and claimed that, among the over $300 BOM cost, the relatively expensive ones including display / touch screen, processor, memory, camera module, and battery are the ones among Samsung’s product portfolios, of which over $200 can be supplied by Samsung internally.

Pan speculated that Snapdragon 835 system in S8 costs over $60, and 64/128GB UFS flash memory near $24 and $34 respectively (which will be $21 and $40 for the capacity of eMMC); LPDDR4x DRAM, 4/6GB estimated at $20 and $35 respectively.

Chinese phones’ key components, however, are all subject to external supply except Huawei’s Kirin processors that can fulfill its own needs and Xiaomi’s processor just hitting the market.

It is therefore obviously that Chinese phones still have a long way to go if they are to surpass Samsung.

Chinese smartphones were once regarded as cheap alternatives to Samsung and iPhone models. While we still have a variety of cheap Chinese handsets in the market, that offers much more value than competitors, the quality and prices of these Chinese smartphone models have gone up in the past few years. While Xiaomi and Meizu still focus on the low-end and mid-range markets, manufacturers like OPPO, Vivo, and Huawei are really improving the average selling price of Chinese smartphone companies.

Chinese smartphones are no longer replicas of Samsung or Apple, rather many of them have managed to bring innovation to the stagnant smartphone market. Lenovo managed to release its first Tango-enabled phone, the Lenovo Phab2Pro and Xiaomi managed to bring dual curved display design to the affordable price segment with the Xiaomi Mi Note 2. Not to forget, the Xiaomi Mi Mix is one of the most revolutionary smartphones that we have seen in recent times.

As you may have noticed, these Chinese smartphone manufacturers have slowly transformed themselves from low-cost phone makers to innovators, releasing interesting products and thereby justifying the release of pricier smartphones that also improve profitability.

According to Strategy Analytics, the average selling price of Chinese smartphones in Q3 2016 was $184, which was closer to the avg. selling price of Samsung phones in the period. The bar in gray (in the image above) represents the avg. selling price of the company in 2015, while the ones in shades of blue are of the three-quarters of 2016. The data for the fourth quarter of 2016 was still not available.

As you can see, Apple’s ASP is way higher than its Android counterparts, $617 for Q3 2016. In the same period, Samsung’s ASP was $222, with Vivo very close behind at $218. The company managed to increase its ASP in the third quarter, thanks to the sale of its expensive models like the Vivo XPlay 6. OPPO has an ASP of $186 while Huawei had an ASP of $148 in the same period.

While in general, you see that the ASP for OPPO and Huawei has fallen down a bit in this period, what’s important to note here is that both the companies have managed to expand their market share aggressively in 2016. OPPO R9 managed to sell very well in 2016 and Huawei’s low-end models and high-end models like Huawei P9 have together helped the company increase its shipments significantly and reduce the gap in terms of sales when compared to Samsung.

What’s even more interesting is that Samsung isn’t likely to increase its average selling price this year, to ensure that it retains its majority market share, which is slowly being snatched by Chinese phone makers like Huawei and OPPO.

“The Chinese manufacturers are going to the low-end phone business and going to second-hand phones,” said Chung Hae-sik, an analyst at the Information Technology Promotion Center (IITP). “As technology has improved and domestic market trends have changed, “He said.

Chung added, “Samsung Electronics is not easy to raise prices because it is trying to check Chinese makers while using market share.”

The smartphone industry is growing at a tremendous pace and most of the growth is coming from China where there is a stiff competition among manufacturers. The competition has led to the release, in quick succession, of high -end smartphones packed with innovative features. If last year was the year of devices with 4GB of RAM and large batteries, this year perhaps will see the focus shifting to more sophisticated displays on flagships. The competition also drives a rise in demand for parts and other raw materials which are usually sourced from third party vendors in China, Taiwan, Japan and other countries.

The rise in demand for parts have been predicted to lead to shortage in parts or components used in the phones as the suppliers may not be able to meet the rising demand. This was made known by a source in Taiwan, one of the major supplier of smartphone components.

The source hinted that there is a rise in the production output of China-based brands, especially OPPO and Vivo, driven by global demands for China phones. The source also hinted that the drive by Chian-based brands to enhance their presence in the mid-range to high-end segment and a bi to ramp up their oversea shipment, ala Xiaomi, have all contributed to an increase in demand for smartphone components.

One component that will likely see shortagein its supply is OLED panels, according to the source. The rumor that Apple will likely use OLED panels on one version of its iPhone 8 has spurred a drive by the China-based smartphone makers and others to place orders for small and mid-size OLED panels, and this will likely cause a shortage in supplies of OLED panels in 2017. Apart from OLEDs, the supply of small and mid-size TFT LCD panels are also exected to remain tight this year as the display size have shifted from the previous 5 inches to 5.5 and 5.7 inches on the average. The demand for high-end camera modules and optical sensing devices are also expected to rise in 2017.

With a population running into over a billion persons, the Chinese market is one of the markets in Asia with lots of potentials and prospects for startups and other business. The sheer size of the country means products could get sold only within the country and companies will declare profits even without shipping outside. But the Chinese smartphone brands seem to be at the forefront of making an aggressive foray into lucrative markets overseas. This they do while keeping a firm grip on their own domestic market.

A recent report by the China Academy of Information and Communication showing the statistics of phones shipped in China indicates that last year (2016), a total of 559.7 million mobile phones were shipped in China. This figure represents an 8% increase from the previous year. SUprisingly, the number of new model releases was 1,446 which is down by 3.3 % year-over-year (YOY). This then means the OEMs actually sold more of their older models and not necessarily new phones.

Of the total 559.7 million mobile phones shipped last year, local smartphone makers shipped 497.8 million units in 2016, up 16.1% YOY. The figure accounts for 88.9% of the domestic mobile phone shipments, higher than 85.0% achieved one year ago. Also, the market share of 4G and smart devices continues to grow stably. A total of 519.4 million or 92.8% of total shipments in China support 4G networks, representing a YOY increase of 18%.

According to research, the growth of the domestic smartphone market is based on the growth of local companies like OPPO and Vivo which contributed a huge role to the surge in shipments from domestic companies. OPPO and Vivo stimulated sales of their products via extensive offline retail outlets as well as using innovative designs on their smartphones. Both OPPO and Vivo were revealed to have captured the top two spots in the Chinese smartphone market, raking in 17% and 16% shares respectively in Q3 2016.

The amazing thing is that apart from capturing the domestic market, Chinese smartphone brands are rapidly expanding overseas, taking on markets in Southeast Asia, Middle East, and Africa. Last year alone, Chinese brands grabbed a chunk off the $10-billion USD Indian smartphone market by capturing 50% of the market, thus slicing off from the shares of market leaders like Samsung. The Chinese brands are even more poised to do more exploits this year. Brands like Xiaomi are restructuring to enable them to capture more of the market shares which they once controlled, so the competition will even be higher than last year.

One of the major shocker the financial sector got this year was the fluctuation in the price of the Chinese Yuan to the US Dollar. Both currencies had consistently traded at fairly stable price but the Chinese economy seems to have experienced some turbulence occasioned by mounting debt which sent the Renminbi (RMB) crashing in the face of the US Dollar. China’s Foreign Exchange Trade Centre has already warned that the Yuan will soon exchange for 7 yuan to a dollar as it stands around 6.9435 yuan to 1 US dollar presently.

Accordingly, a rise in the exchange rate could lead to increase in prices of the parts used in smartphones and even though the effect won’t be hard on those who ship overseas, the prospect doesn’t look too good in the overall. While the phones are manufactured in China, parts such as the chip, camera, screen, memory  etc are imported from other countries and paid for in US dollars. A higher exchange rate means the manufacturers pay more for the parts than before. This has led the major phone manufacturers to warn that there might be an increase in phone prices next year.

Meizu M5 is reportedly releasing on October 31 when the company has a big promo event scheduled. Li Nan already confirmed the launch of the device a few hours back and now, new images of the M5 have cropped up online, along with a possible Geekbench listing. This means we have a lot more information about the upcoming device, including its new polycarbonate design and specifications.

The Meizu M5 seems to feature a very similar design as the M3S model which was announced in June, however, the phone could come with a polycarbonate body instead of a metal one. Further, along with a black colored model, we have also spotted a green colored one. Given that Meizu’s Blue Charm series have always been a colorful lineup, it’s possible that the company launches a green color option for the device.

As for the specs, a recent Geekbench listing of the device revealed that the Meizu M5 will come with the MT6750 octa-core processor with 2GB RAM and Android 6.0 on board. The above pictures further reveal that the phone was running on YunOS platform and featured a 5-inch 720p display, 13MP rear camera, 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. It is said that there could be a 3GB RAM version of the device as well.

As for the pricing of the Meizu M5, given the specs, expect it to be super cheap. Also, considering that Meizu is releasing this device in anticipation of its 11/11 sales, the company should price it aggressively. Although 360 Mobiles don’t sell their smartphones internationally, the company has got a good fan following here thanks to its affordable value for money smartphones. Now, after a few teasers, 360 Mobiles has just updated its N series lineup with a new model, the 360 N4A. In case you are wondering what’s the difference between the previously released 360 N4S and the new N4A, then note that this new model is a toned down version, coming with less powerful specs and a cheaper price tag.

The 360 N4A comes with a full metal body, just like the N4S with 2.5D glass on top and an 8.2mm thick body. The screen up front is a 5.5-inch panel with 1080p resolution, 450 nits max brightness and 100% sRGB.

Under the hood, you have the decent MediaTek MT6753 octa-core chipset with 3GB RAM and 32GB of expandable internal storage (upto 128GB). Personally, I think Helio P10 would have been a better choice for the processor. As for the camera, the 360 N4A features a 13MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture, 5P lens and PDAF (0.1s). Up front, you have a 5MP shooter with ultra-wide lens and soft light support. For software, the phone comes with the 360 OS 2.0 based on Android 6 Marshmallow. You get 4G LTE dual SIM card support as well.

Other features of the 360 N4A include a large 4000mAh battery with 43 hours talktime and continuous 13 hours of video playback. So, you can get up to 2 days on a single charge. The phone supports 9V 2A fast charging, and charges up to 80% in an hour, which is pretty good.

Like always, the company has priced the 360 N4A aggressively and starts at just 899 Yuan ($133). The phone will go on sale via reputed sellers such as JD.com, Lynx, and others on October 18 at 10AM.

Buying a daily cheap phone is not that easy anymore as it was a couple years ago. We just had a couple of alternatives, but today, as more Chinese makers come to market and because of the high competition in the smartphone market, there are many more phones to choose from. Today, we will try to help you with the purchase of a super cheap phone. Remember, these are phones under $100 class, and hence you should not expect a lot from them, but again, some might also surprise you in this price range.

There are more than 50 alternatives under 100$ range so I decided to narrow down this list as choosing minimum 2GB of RAM and Quad-core CPU’s. We have 1 exception with 1GB RAM phone, because of its price. All the phones in this list are based on Quad-core MediaTek CPU’s, divided to MTK6580 and MTK6735. Huawei had a wonderful 2015, selling over 108 million smartphones in a single year, which is quite a big achievement for the company. This year, the company plans to sell even more smartphones, somewhere around 140 million which will be great, if it manages to reach this target. However, according to supply chain sources, Huawei has reduced this target to 120 million for 2016, as it failed to reach internal goals due to the high price of its top-end phones. Well, to be honest, 120 million isn’t bad for a smartphone company in this market. It still represents a good 11% growth, which is better than most other smartphone makers who are focused on the high-end market.

Huawei is still doing well in the high-end market and recently, in the grand sale on JD.com in China, the company managed to come out as one of the top three smartphone makers. Also, it’s interesting to see the company’s high-end smartphones managed to come on top, in the two high-priced segments during the sale. For example, in the 2500-2999 Yuan segment, Huawei Mate 8 as well as Honor V8 were the top three phones, and in the 3000-3999 Yuan segment as well, Huawei P9 and Huawei P9 Plus made it to the top three.

So, even if Huawei does not reach its far fetched goal of selling 140 million smartphones, doing well in the high-end market could turn out to be good for the company. According to the company, it has already sold more than 2.6 million Huawei P9 and P9 Plus units since launch.

One brand to watch out in 2016 is OPPO who is also doing incredibly well. The company has reportedly sold more than 7 million OPPO R9 / OPPO F1 Plus smartphone since its launch a few months back and if the company manages to reach analyst prediction of 77-80 million units of smartphones sold in 2016, then it would be a big milestone for the company. Given that OPPO’s strength is really in the high-end segment, it could turn out to be a Chinese smartphone maker that Huawei has to look out for in the coming years.

Jiayu S3 complaints

I ordered Jiayu S3 from pandawill.com sometime in January for my family member. It arrived after 3 weeks using Singapore post to central Europe where I live. I didn’t have to pay any additional taxes. The phone is awesome, comes with great built quality, and an impresive HW to price ratio. But let’s talk about the problem. After a week of usage my family member started to complain about the call quality.

The Problem

The problem that I experienced with this device was occurring during phone calls. The strange thing about this is that the person who was calling from the Jiayu S3 was not experiencing any problem however the person who was called was the one affected. Let’s make it clear: I am calling my friend using Jiayu S3. I am hearing clear and crisp call with no problems. However my friend is complaining all the time about one specific problem = echo. He is hearing his own words he just said with aprox. 2 second delay.

The Solution

I started to investigate what is wrong with the phone and found out this. When I turned the loud speaker on or attached headphones to the Jiayu S3 during call the echo on the called persons side disappeared. I also tried to do something with noise cancellation setting but it didn’t help. Next I looked at phones setting and SW version. It was using SW built from 27th of January so I searched for SW update – there was one from the 5th of February and it was also showing that it is solving the call problems. I installed it and gave the phone back to my family member. However a week later the phone was again in my hand because the problem appeared again. It was exactly the same problem as before so the SW update didn’t solve it. Thanks to my experience with flashing ROMs on my Nexus 5 I got an idea to install a custom ROM because I concluded that it is a SW problem for sure. I hit the web and searched for a good ROM. I visited needrom.com and chose Pure AOSP from Team force developers. I flashed the ROM using TWRP recovery and installed all updates. After all the installations and specific settings for my family member were done I tried to make a phone call again and the problem is definitely solved now. It is two weeks now since then and there were no more complaints about it.

Final words

Jiayu S3 is a great device however it was betrayed by its SW. This is why I am using Nexus 5 which has the biggest developer’s base and why I am very careful when buying a Chinese phone. The HW can be great but SW side can kill the experience. I am really glad that I managed to fix the problem and didn’t have to send the phone back to China for replacement.

Next up in the list is the recently announced Zeaplus M4. This is another beautiful looking phone as it is the clone of the popular Xiaomi Mi4 flagship. So, if you like the Mi4, the Zeaplus M4 should definitely be on your list.

Apart from the beautiful design, the affordable M4 does have some decent hardware up its sleeve. For example, you get the same MediaTek MT6582, 1.3GHz, Quad-core processor on this device as the Neo M1 along with 1GB RAM. If you are looking for something more powerful, then you can go for the new THL T6 Pro. It comes with a Mediatek MT6592m Cortex A7 processor clocked at 1.4 Ghz. This should give you more than enough power to run any apps or games on the device without any lag. For RAM, you get 1GB and for storage, you have 8GB internal with MicroSD card expansion support.

On the back there’s an 8MP camera which clicks decent pictures while on the front, there is a 2MP sensor. The screen is of 5 inches like the earlier listed models and comes with 720p resolution. Battery is a bit of a disappointment, as it comes with only 1,900 mAh capacity Li-Polymer battery. But even with 8 cores, the device should survive a day, owing to the less powerful power efficient Cortex A7 processor.

5. THL 4000

Cubot S200 isn’t the only smartphone in town with a large battery. In fact, if you are looking for a device that will really last for more than a day, even with heavy use, then the THL 4000 is perfect for you. The THL model makes up for what its elder brother THL T6 lacked, with a large 4,000 mAh battery (hence the Name THL 4000!). This is really the most you can get on a smartphone under $100.

So, you must be wondering why didn’t we list it ahead of the S200. Well, the reason is simple. Apart from the large battery, the THL 4000 is a very average phone Although the basic package remains the same – MTK6582 1.3Ghz Quad Core processor + 1GB RAM + 8GB ROM, the camera sensor and the display are much smaller than what you get from the earlier listed devices. For example, you just have a 4.7 inch screen with 960 x 540 qHD resolution. Rear camera is of 5MP and the front camera is of 2MP.

Don’t have $100 to spend on your next smartphone or looking for an extremely cheap back up smartphone? We have a device which satisfies this need too. We present the cheapest smartphone in the list, the Cubot 168. Its less than $80 but only sacrifices in some areas to get to this price tag.

For example, the display remains at 5 inches like most other phones in the list, but the resolution is reduced to qHD i.e. 960 x 540 pixels. Also, the battery is small and at 1,900 mAh capacity, it should barely last you an entire day. However, other than this, the features are the same as the S200. So you have a MT6582 Quad Core processor, 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage with a MicroSD card slot. Camera too remains the same at 8MP rear sensor and 5MP front sensor.

So, the choice is simple. If you are short on cash and are looking for a cheap smartphone, Cubot S168 should serve you well.

Let me remind you that you have a powerful Quad Core processor as well as a decent display in this phone, so things are not as bad as you may think. Its just that you have better options out there, all for less than a $100 which makes this device look a bit weak.  But for $80, we think you get much more than your money’s worth.

If you didn’t like the design on the earlier listed phones, there’s a very good chance that the KingSing S2 won’t disappoint you. This is because, S2 is a clone of one of the most beautiful smartphones currently available in the market. the LG G3. It even features the same rear volume and power buttons like the G3.

The build is quite solid with a glossy back cover (unlike the metal finish on the G3) and looks wise, you will be impressed for sure (for a device of this price). Surprisingly, there’s even a heart rate sensor on the device, which although isn’t very accurate, it could be something that you can boast about your $100 smartphone.

Inside, the specifications are pretty average. You get a Quad Core 1.3GHz MTK6582 processor with 1GB RAM and 8GB storage with memory card slot. Like most other models, you have a 5 inch display up front, but unfortunately, the resolution is just qHD i.e. 960 x 540 pixels. For camera you have 8MP sensor at the back and a 2MP sensor up front. The battery is also decent, a 2,000 mAh capacity(though we would have loved atleast 2,300mAh), which with the power efficient processor and the lower resolution screen should be just enough to last an entire day.

All the phones we have covered till now feature 5 inch screen or less. But those who are looking for something bigger, can go for the new Elephone G5 smartphone. It comes with a 5.5 inch display with  a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. While this will reduce the pixel density of the screen as compared to other phones in the list, the display still should be clear enough for your everyday use.

G5’s design is inspired by the famous OnePlus One flagship, so you get the same premium soft back finish on the phone that everyone loves. The overall dimensions of both the devices are almost the same, the G5 measures 155 x 78.5 x 7.5 mm while the OPO measures 152.9 x 75.9 x 8.9 mm.
