Google might already be working on the Pixel 11a model despite the Pixel 9a and Pixel 10a still being a while away from release. The codename for this upcoming budget Pixel phone has just been revealed. So here’s everything you need to know.

Google Pixel 11a codename hints at its active development

According to an AndroidHeadlines report, the Pixel 11a will also stick with the bear themed codenames as its predecessors. The device was reportedly spotted with the Formosan codename. To recall, the Pixel 11 might be internally referred to as Cubs, Pixel 11 Pro is Grizzly, and Pixel 11 Pro XL is Kodiak. The Pixel 11a would likely launch after the Pixel 11 series, so we can expect it to debut in 2027.

For those unaware, the Formosan here should refer to the Formosan Black Bear, which is a bear native to Taiwan. In one of our earlier reports, it was rumored that the Pixel 11a and Pixel Tablet 3 will not feature the same Tensor chipset as the flagship models, which has been the norm so far. Meaning, it would get an inferior Tensor SoC along with downgraded AI performance.

Unfortunately, the Pixel 11a is still quite far away from launch so finer details like its specs, design, and other aspects are still at large. Chinese tech giant, Xiaomi, is reportedly readying to unveil its latest flagship models under the moniker “Houji” and “Shennong,” according to the Weibo tipster, Digital Chat Station. These intriguing codenames are drawn from Chinese mythology and indicate a continuity of the cultural theme that began with the Xiaomi 13 series.

Continuing the Trend of Chinese Mythology Codenames

The codenames, deeply rooted in agriculture within Chinese mythology, suggest the upcoming Xiaomi 14 series’ focus on enriching user experience, design aesthetics, and remarkable Leica imaging. Both “Houji,” the Yellow Emperor’s great-grandson who began cultivating crops, and “Shennong,” Yan Emperor known for his profound contribution to agriculture and farming techniques, are revered figures in Chinese lore.

Google‘s upcoming Android update, codenamed “Vanilla Ice Cream”, has been revealed through a series of code changes in Android’s Trade Federation (Tradefed/TF), as reported by Mishaal Rahman tipped by TeamB58. While the dessert-themed codename has no significant meaning, it is a fun little tradition since the early days of Android.

Although there are no details about what to expect with the Android update set to arrive sometime in 2024, Rahman states that Google is always looking ahead and working on new enhancements and features. If these features don’t make it into the current build, there is always a chance that they might be pushed to a later update or not even make it into the OS at all. While Google is gearing up for the launch of the public release of Android 12 in the arriving months, new information has just surfaced regarding the next iteration of the operating system. The company might have decided on the dessert name of Android 13 “T”.

According to a commit on the AOSP Gerrit (spotted by @_cdesai, Via XDADevelopers) the search engine giant has apparently decided upon the name for the next generation of Android operating system. The Android 13 “T” will be internally called Tiramisu. At the moment, this is the first mention of the internal codename for the next iteration of Android, while the new OS will be publicly referred to as simply “Android 13.”

For those unaware, the company is used to calling its Android versions with a dessert name. This has been a tradition for around a decade, although, the brand stopped the tradition starting with the Android 10 (Android Q) OS and even rebranded the Android platform. However, the dessert names are still being continued as codenames internally, with Android 10 being Quince Tart, Android 11 was named Red Velvet, and Android 12 was Snow Cone.

It’s been just a month since Galaxy S10 launch, and the Korean giant has even started the developement of Galaxy S11. According to Twitter leakster Ice Universe, Samsung has codenamed the Galaxy S11 ‘Picasso,’ after the famous Spanish painter. Unfortunately, the reason behind such a creative name is unknown. The new codename is in line with the Galaxy Note 10’s codename of ‘Da Vinci.’

The new codename suggests the presence of some artistic features on the Galaxy S11. It would be interesting to know the final output by the end of this year via some renders and leaks.

The Galaxy S11 will carry various new advancements over the Galaxy S10. The Korean giant is known to be working on the “full-screen” Infinity display without any punch hole or sliders. It is expected to feature a fully bezel-less design with the under-display camera. It could come up with the processor developed on EUV-based 5 nm FinFET process technology.
