Chinese tech giant OPPO has officially announced the rollout of its latest Android 10-based ColorOS 7.2 in India. The new software version which arrives with an array of new topnotch features is bundled with the Reno4 Pro. Sadly, that is the only phone you can get the new OS on right now. The Reno4 went on sale in India on August 5 marking the rollout of the OS in the country.

The new version of ColorOS 7 offers a slew of new and improved features which improves the functionalities making the device smarter, more efficient, and versatile. ColorOS 7.2 offers new features that make the use of the smartphone easier, richer, and fun. It is built on Android 10, the latest version of Google’s operating system, and comes with the most used Google apps pre-installed, including calls and messages. Building on top of the lightweight design approach of ColorOS 7, the new version offers a richer and fun experience with new features such as the AI App Preloading, Super Power Saving Mode, OPPO Lab, Quick Return Bubble and more.

ColorOS is the official Android skin of Oppo smartphones sold worldwide. It is in its 7th generation called ColorOS 7. The latest version is ColorOS 7.2, which is currently exclusive to Reno 4 series. Recently, the company launched Find X2 in India with ColorOS 7.1 onboard. At the same time, Manoj Kumar, the head of ColorOS was interviewed by The Indian Express.

In the interview, Mr Kumar revealed some interesting facts about the development of ColorOS for international users. 

When asked about the addition of new features, the Oppo executive said that they always listen to user’s feedback on ColorOS Community as well as from customer care centres. Based on those, new features are finalized after going through rigorous trend analysis and ideation across different teams.

He also revealed that Oppo’s R&D centre in India has 300 employees and about more than 30 of them are working on localization in ColorOS by being close with the HQ team in China.

Further, Mr Kumar disclosed that the development of a new ColorOS version takes between four to six months. Like any software, various teams are involved in it and not one.

Most importantly, he also addressed advertisements in UI. He said Android and Google have an advertising platform but they don’t encourage it. Thus, they give an option to block them. In simpler words, ads are present in ColorOS but it can be disabled if the user is not interested.

Yesterday, Oppo announced Reno 4 series in China alongside products like Enco W51, Oppo Band, and more. To everyone’s surprise, these handsets run ColorOS 7.2, a brand new version of the company’s mobile software. So, here in this post, let us deep dive to know what’s new.

Super Night Scene for Videos

As the name suggests, Oppo has developed an algorithm called ‘Moonlight Night Scene Video’ (translated) to record better quality videos in low-light. The brand claims it enhances the brightness and clarity of videos by 74% and 34% respectively.

Movie Mode for Videos

Xiaomi introduced Vlog mode in MIUI 11 / 12 for certain phones. Similarly, Oppo has added movie mode capable of recording videos in 21:9 aspect ratio. Users can choose from 10 movie filters, several templates, and adjust parameters such as exposure, shutter speed, and more. This feature is part of ColorOS’ Soloop video editor.

Super Power Saving Mode

This mode will help users make use of the last remaining percentage of their phone’s battery very efficiently. Oppo says users can use WeChat for 1.5 hours (90 minutes) with only 5% battery when the Super Power Saving Mode turned on.

AI App Pre-launch

The system improves the app launch speed significantly by analyzing the user’s daily usage habits and trends. This feature is also found in MIUI 12.

AI Repair

People either scan or click pictures of their old physical photographs. Usually, those are of bad quality and need some edit. AI Repair does this job for users by removing visible blurs and noises.

Oppo Camera SDK

At Google I/O 2019, the search giant announced CameraX API to let third-party apps have access to features of the device’s stock camera app. Oppo was the first smartphone maker to announce its involvement in the project.

Now, with ColorOS 7.2, the company has released an updated SDK that allows third-party apps to access ultra-wide angle camera as well as stabilization functionality.

ColorOS 7.2 Rollout

ColorOS 7.2 only comes pre-installed on Reno 4  and Reno 4 Pro for now. A few months back, Oppo announced ColorOS 7.1 with the release on Find X2 and Find X2 Pro. This particular version is also only available on the launch phones and Oppo Ace 2.

Sadly, Oppo is still rolling out ColorOS 7 (announced in November 2019) to the older devices running ColorOS 6.1. The company is yet to announce which handsets will be receiving the now released latest version.

Since most of the features in ColorOS 7.1 / 7.2 are targeted at mid-range and high-end smartphones, we don’t expect the company to roll out these versions to all the devices that are receiving ColorOS 7.
