A US jury hit Microsoft with a hefty $242 million (around ¥1.75 billion) fine for patent infringement. The verdict, reached in Delaware on May 10, stems from a lawsuit filed by IPA Technologies in 2018.

Microsoft is planning to appeal the jury’s decision

The lawsuit claimed Microsoft’s Cortana voice assistant infringed on IPA’s patent for voice recognition technology used in computer communication software. Originally, the case involved multiple IPA patents, but ultimately focused on just one. Microsoft argued they didn’t infringe and the patent itself was invalid.

IPA Technologies, a subsidiary of Wi-LAN, acquired the patent in question from SRI International’s Siri Company. Apple then acquired Siri Company and its technology in 2010, using it for their Siri voice assistant.

Microsoft plans to appeal the decision. “We firmly believe we did not infringe,” a spokesperson said. IPA and Wi-LAN haven’t commented publicly yet.

This isn’t IPA’s first rodeo. They’ve sued Google and Amazon over similar patents. Amazon successfully defended itself in 2021, while the Google case remains ongoing.

Microsoft is bringing a new update for Windows users in Europe. The company is finally allowing its users to uninstall some of its basic apps like Edge (browser), Bing (search), and Cortana (voice assistant). So here’s everything you need to know.

Microsoft Edge, Bing, and Cortana can finally be removed

The American tech giant isn’t rolling out this change for an improved user experience and choice freedom, rather, it is bringing the update to comply with the DMA (Digital Markets Act). For those unaware, the DMA was announced by the European Union, which is enforcing Microsoft to make all of its basic apps removable. It is worth noting that the act will come into effect from March 2024 in the European Economic Area (EEA).

This includes all EU nations along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. In an official blog post, Microsoft announced that the change is exclusive to Europe. This means that the new change isn’t global. So now, you can uninstall the Edge web browser and change the Bing web search. This is something that many Windows users have been requesting for a long time now.

Microsoft is constantly pushing Edge and Bing to convince you to switch over to its own platforms. Apart from this, the company will also let users uninstall Cortana, Camera, and Photos from the Windows experience. In related news, the company patented the multi-device virtual web browser to improve users’ internet accessibility just last month.

Microsoft continues to work on and add new features to Windows 11. But while they are introducing new features, they are also shutting down old and unsuccessful projects. The latest one to get axed is Cortana, the virtual assistant that entered our lives in 2015. Sadly, it has reached the end of its life. Now, Microsoft is killing the standalone Cortana app in Windows 11. Here are the details…

Microsoft Kills Off Cortana App in Windows 11

Actually, this isn’t a new information. Back in June, Microsoft officially announced that it would stop supporting Cortana. However, users could still access the virtual assistant through the app if they wanted to. Now, the company has stopped supporting the Cortana app in Windows 11. The app is getting an update to tell users that it will stop working later this month

Cortana was not very popular with users, and it was never able to compete with other digital assistants like Siri, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant. Microsoft is replacing Cortana with other AI-powered features in Windows 11, such as Windows Copilot. Windows Copilot is still under development, but it has the potential to be a much more useful and powerful AI assistant than Cortana ever was.

This new AI assistant is currently in preview for Windows 11 Dev Channel Insiders. Copilot is designed to provide real-time assistance, helping users with tasks like writing code, composing emails, and creating presentations. Once activated, Windows Copilot will appear as a panel on the side of the screen. Users can then give commands to the assistant, such as “type ‘hello world’” or “open Microsoft Edge.” The assistant will then take care of the rest, automatically typing or opening the requested item. However, time will tell how successful it will be.

Microsoft has been working for a long time to bring an AI assistant to Windows. They first tried this in January 2015 with Cortana, but it wasn’t successful. Cortana was shut down recently, after eight years. However, inspired by the AI trend started by ChatGPT, Microsoft decided to try again. They began working on a feature called Windows Copilot. Now, they have released an early preview of Windows Copilot. Here are the details…

What are the benefits of using Windows Copilot?

When Cortana was first announced, many people were excited about the idea of having an AI assistant to help them with their daily tasks. However, the technology wasn’t quite there yet, and Cortana never lived up to its full potential. Now, Microsoft is trying again with Windows Copilot.

This new AI assistant is currently in preview for Windows 11 Dev Channel Insiders. Copilot is designed to provide real-time assistance, helping users with tasks like writing code, composing emails, and creating presentations. The assistant can be accessed by clicking on a taskbar button or using the keyboard shortcut WIN + C.

Once activated, Windows Copilot will appear as a panel on the side of the screen. Users can then give commands to the assistant, such as “type ‘hello world'” or “open Microsoft Edge.” The assistant will then take care of the rest, automatically typing or opening the requested item. In addition to providing real-time assistance, Windows Copilot can also learn from users’ habits and preferences over time.

This means that the assistant will become more accurate and helpful as it is used more. Windows Copilot is still in the early preview stages, but it has the potential to be a powerful productivity tool. The assistant is particularly useful for people who are new to Windows or who have difficulty using a computer.

The post Windows Copilot: The AI Assistant That’s Changing the Way We Use Our Computers appeared first on Gizmochina.

Microsoft has officially announced the discontinuation of its virtual assistant, Cortana, on the Windows platform. In a recent support document, the company stated that the standalone Cortana app, which often goes unnoticed by users, will no longer receive support starting later this year.

This decision follows the introduction of Windows Copilot, which was unveiled at Microsoft’s Build 2023 conference just a week ago. Despite speculation that Copilot would replace Cortana, Microsoft’s Aaron Woodman clarified that the two services have distinct purposes and are not interchangeable.

Microsoft’s Focus Shift: Embracing AI with Copilot and Bing Chat

While Cortana will no longer be available, Microsoft assures users that AI experiences will still be accessible on Windows 11. Notable replacements mentioned in the support document include Windows Copilot, the new Bing, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and voice access in Windows, which enables voice control of PCs.

Cortana’s fate has been apparent for some time. Initially launched as a virtual assistant for Windows Phone 8.1 in 2014, it later made its way to desktops with Windows 10. Microsoft expanded Cortana’s presence by integrating it into various applications, resembling the current approach with Copilot. However, third-party Cortana devices such as the Harman Kardon Invoke smart speaker and the Johnson Controls Glas thermostat have also lost support.

Recognizing the limited potential for Cortana to compete with Amazon’s Alexa, Microsoft gradually scaled back its efforts. Cortana was separated from Windows, becoming a standalone app rather than a taskbar feature. Over the past couple of years, it has largely remained an app on Windows 11 without significant updates or new features.

Now, Microsoft is emphasizing Bing Chat and Copilot. The company’s focus on AI is evident, with plans to move forward with GPT-4, a more advanced voice assistant, instead of relying on Cortana’s basic functionality.

Microsoft clarified that Cortana will still be available in Outlook mobile, Teams mobile, Teams display, and Teams rooms. However, considering the discontinuation of Cortana on Windows and the lack of recent updates, it may not be the ideal time to build workflows around the virtual assistant.

Furthermore, the end of Cortana coincides with the approaching end of the Windows 10 era. Microsoft recently confirmed that the upcoming 22H2 version will be the final feature update for this widely used operating system.

The post Goodbye, Cortana: Microsoft to discontinue support for the virtual assistant on Windows appeared first on Gizmochina.

Last month, Microsoft announced that it is all set to pull the plug on its Cortana mobile application for both Android and iOS devices in several countries next year. The company confirmed that from January 31, 2020, Microsoft will no longer support the digital assistant app in some of the regions.

At that time, it was revealed that the Cortana mobile app will no longer support UK, Canada, Australia, China, Germany, India, Mexico and Spain. Now, in a recent interview, Andrew Shuman, who is leading the Cortana team, confirmed that the Cortana mobile app (as well as its integration in Microsoft’s Android launcher) was going away in all countries except for the U.S.

Explaining why the app will still be functional in the United Sates, he said that it is used to configure Cortana and update the firmware on Surface Headphones, which debuted only in the United States.

This doesn’t make sense as the headphones are now on sale in other regions as well. After January 30, only Surface Headphones users in the U.S. will be able to keep using Cortana for Android and iOS. All other Surface Headphones owners will now have to use Cortana for Windows.

However, he did gave two more reasons for killing the app. First, Cortana for Android and iOS didn’t receive much traction outside the U.S. He said that “the markets we turned off had much lower usage and engagement.” The second reason is that Cortana for Android and iOS is sticking around in the U.S. because Microsoft wants to keep experimenting.

With the application for smartphones going away in almost all regions, the company previously said that “to make Cortana as helpful as possible, we’re integrating Cortana deeper into your Microsoft 365 productivity apps, and part of this evolution involves ending support for the Cortana mobile app on Android and iOS.” This confirms that Microsoft is refocusing Cortana for the enterprise, and specifically for Windows and Office.

Today, Microsoft announced a number of devices at its Surface event. While we were already expecting the Surface Pro 6, the Surface Studio 2, and the Surface Laptop 2; the Surface Headphones took us by surprise.

The Surface Headphones is not only Microsoft’s first headphones but also the first headphones with Cortana built-in. Google Assistant is already built-in a number of headphones such as the Bose Quiet Comfort 35 II. The Bose headphones has also gained support for Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant.

Microsoft’s Surface Headphones comes in Light Gray which is the only issue we have with it. Seeing as the Surface Pro 6 and the Surface Laptop 2 both come in black, it only makes sense that the Surface Headphones also has a black variant.

The headphones appear to be well-made just like other Surface products. Each cup has a 40mm driver and a dial which allows you to adjust the volume (right cup) or adjust the level of noise cancellation (left cup, 14 different points (levels). The cups also have touch sensors for pausing/resuming playback, answering calls and skipping tracks. There is a power button and a mute button too.

The headphones has 2 beam-forming microphones on each cup and a total of 8 microphones to help you focus on the sounds that matter. The headphones will also automatically pause playback when you take them off and resumes when you put them back on.

[envira-gallery id=”214972″]

The Surface Headphones connects via Bluetooth 4.2 to your Windows 10, iOS, Android, and MacOS devices. Unlike the Surface Pro 6 and Surface Laptop 2, the Surface Headphones has a USB Type-C port for charging. The headphones fully charges in under 2 hours and charging for just 5 minutes should provide up to 1 hour of music playback. It also has an audio jack in case you want to switch to wired mode.

Microsoft says it will last up to 15 hours on a single charge if you are playing music over Bluetooth, have ANC turned on, and Cortana activated and up to 50 hours in wired mode with ANC turned on.

The Surface Headphones is priced at $350 and will come with a carrying case, a 1.5m USB-C cable, and a 1.2m audio cable. Microsoft has said the headphones will be available in the US and the UK in time for the holidays. Support for Cortana will only be available in certain regions.

Google has the Google Home, Home Mini, and Home Max. Amazon has a plethora of Echo devices. And Apple has the HomePod. Microsoft has…….nothing. Yes, the Invoke is powered by Cortana but it is a product by Harman Kardon.

There are rumors Microsoft may be building its own smart speaker. This may be as a result of two things – the Invoke being the only Cortana smart speaker in the market or Microsoft wanting to square up against Google and Amazon with its own product.

Documents have revealed that Microsoft is working with a Taiwanese company called Quanta on the smart speaker. The smart speaker is said to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 212 – a SoC used for mobile devices originally (Nokia 2) but now making its way into IoT devices. It is based on ARM’s Cortex A7 architecture and clocked at 1.3GHz.

With respect to design, little or nothing is known for now as work is still in the development stage. However, one can presume, the speaker will have a cylindrical design as is common with most smart speakers.

There is also a possibility that Microsoft is not working on a smart speaker but is instead creating a reference design to be used by partner companies. Time will tell if this is true.

There are a few other manufacturers that are linked with Microsoft and may release a Cortana-based speaker in the near future. One of them is China’s Xiaomi.

Xiaomi and Microsoft have signed a new deal. Both companies already have an existing partnership that sees the latter’s office suite of apps pre-loaded on Xiaomi’s phones. The new deal which focuses on AI will bring to market a Cortana-powered Xiaomi smart speaker.

Xiaomi already has a smart speaker called the Mi AI speaker. The speaker uses an in-house assistant and only supports Chinese. Cortana currently supports English (Australia, US, UK, Canada), Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Italian, and Spanish.

The Cortana smart speaker will actually be a “port” of Cortana to the Xiaomi Mi AI speaker. Reviews say the speaker does look good and has great audio and build quality. It is also pretty cheap as it sells for just ¥299 (~$50). So this sure looks like a win already.

The agreement between both companies is actually a Strategic Framework Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement will result in a combination of Microsoft’s experience in cloud and AI technology and Xiaomi’s expertise in smart hardware development for achieving select goals. Both companies will leverage on the other’s strength for success.

Xiaomi will also have access to Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform and also get development and marketing insights for its own laptops.

Xiaomi’s subsidiary Yeelight, which is known for making smart home products, has today officially launched a new product — Yeelight Voice Assistant. As the name itself suggests, it is a smart speaker powered by voice assistant — a first such product from the company.

In terms of looks, the Yeelight Voice Assistant is very much similar to the Amazon Eco Dot which was launched in March last year. The Yeelight’s smart speaker comes with four buttons on the top side — an action button, microphone on/off button, volume up button and volume down button, just like the Eco Dot.

However, the company has also included an additional button in the centre, which can be used to put the speaker in mute mode. Such feature is not available on Amazon’s Eco Dot but is present on the larger versions of the Amazon Echo.

The speaker is believed to have been powered by Microsoft’s Cortana voice assistant. Since Xiaomi entered into a partnership with Microsoft last year, all the Mi Smartphones comes pre-installed with Microsoft’s apps. The Mi MIX was the first phone from Xiaomi to feature Cortana.

It comes with six microphones and a single 2-Watt speaker. The company says that the device comes equipped with an advanced voice wake-up algorithm which can turn the device ON within a range of 5 meters. It also comes with advanced Acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) and Beamforming technology for echo reduction.

It is powered by a 64-bit Cortex A53 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz and is coupled with 256MB RAM and 256MB of flash storage. As of the connectivity options, the device supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz Dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy (LE).

As revealed by the company, the Yeelight Voice Assistant comes with Dual AI systems and can also be used for controlling other smart home products from Xiaomi, such as smart LED bulbs, table lamps, bedside lights, ceiling lights, etc. While it currently supports only Xiaomi smart home products, the company has said that support for more devices will be included in the coming days.

Microsoft’s Cortana is one of the major AI assistants in the market. Its main rivals – Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Assistant both have smart speakers – a bunch of them actually which have been available for a while now. However, Microsoft just announced its first – the Harman Kardon Invoke a few days ago, and it is set to take on the Echos and the Homes.

Design

The Harman Kardon Invoke has the same tower-design as the Amazon Echo but gets bigger towards the base. There is a metallic speaker grille that wraps around a large portion of the phone save for the base (plastic) and the top.

It has a touch-sensitive top that lights up when Cortana is listening as well as when you rotate the dial to adjust the volume. At the base are two buttons – one for muting the microphone and the other for pairing with Bluetooth devices.

Specs and Features

The Invoke stands at 242 mm tall. It is also pretty heavy at 1kg thanks to the three 45mm woofers and three 13mm dome tweeters under its metal and plastic body. At the top lies seven far-field microphones for picking up your voice from any corner of the room

Even with that weight, it doesn’t have a built-in battery. There is dual band Wi-Fi support and Bluetooth 4.1 for connectivity and a micro USB port at the bottom for power.

Like other smart speakers, you can ask Invoke to create reminders, lists, and answer questions. You can also make calls to landlines and mobiles using Skype. Got some smart home devices like thermostats and bulbs? Ask Cortana to turn the heat up or dim the lights.

Invoke can also stream audio from services like TuneIn, iHeart Radio, and Spotify. Although it is limited compared to what you have on other smart speakers, Microsoft says it is in talks to add more services.

Setting up the Invoke is easy. Plug it to an outlet, download the free Cortana app (Windows 10 PC or phone, Android 4.1.2+, and iOS 8.0+). Sign into your Microsoft account and you are ready to go.

Amazon’s Alexa is a pretty big deal. It is one of the most popular smart assistants and is available on a variety of devices and even cars too. Microsoft’s Cortana on the the other hand is available on Windows 10 computers, phones, as well as the Xbox One. However, both giants have announced a partnership that will see the two assistants become buddies.

Cortana works mainly as a reminder while Alexa does so much more. It can answer questions, place orders on Amazon, and can also control smart devices like your lights. With the announcement it means you should be able to order that new Xbox controller on Amazon by calling up Cortana to open up Alexa or asking your Echo device to call up Cortana to check your work calendar. It is strange but I guess they have to make it work somehow.

Google on the other hand has added the ability to be able to shop on Walmart using the Google Assistant. So you can call the Amazon and Microsoft partnership a sort of take on Google and Walmart’s alliance.

Apple has Siri voice assistant on its iPhones. The Google Assistant was introduced on Google Pixel smartphones. Microsoft smartphones have Cortana onboard and Amazon’s voice assistant is called Alexa. Also, Samsung is heavily pegged to launch Bixby voice assistant on Galaxy S8. Fresh information has revealed that Huawei, the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world is all set to rival the existing AI assistants by introducing its own digital assistants.

According to Bloomberg, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is currently developing its own voice assistant and it has over 100 engineers working on it.  The report states that Huawei’s digital assistant would be aimed towards domestic audience as it will carry support for Chinese languages.

Huawei smartphones that will be sold outside of China will include AI services from Google and Amazon. As of this writing, none of the existing Chinese smartphone manufacturers have its own voice assistant. Hence, Huawei smartphones that will come its own AI service will be stand out from devices from the oversaturated Chinese smartphone market where Google services are blocked and Amazon’s Alexa does not support Chinese language.

Google has been struggling to re-launch its services in China and if the world’s third largest smartphone maker launches its own AI service, Google’s plans will be further affected. According to IDC, Samsung and Apple are currently leading the global smartphone market and Huawei is placed on the third spot. Richard Yu, the consumer head of Huawei has said that the company aims to grab the first spot by 2021.

Unlike Apple and Samsung, Huawei smartphones are not sold through popular carriers of the U.S. such as AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint. Huawei is also expected to increase its market share in the U.S. market by partnering with major carriers.

After making a comeback with Nokia 6 Android smartphone, the company is now rumored to be working on a virtual voice assistant like Siri , Google Assistant, ad Cortana. It is expected to be called Viki.

Rumors are rife that Nokia has registered a trademark for a personal voice assistant called Viki in the EU. In the application, the product is described as ‘software for the creation and monitoring of mobile and web assistants working with digital knowledge and combining all data sources into a single chat and voice-based interface.”

Adding voice assistants on smartphones seems to be a growing trend with smartphone companies.

Recently, Huawei had announced that it will be including Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant in the next flagship that it will release in the U.S. Apple has Siri on its devices since 2011.

Alexa voice assistant is available on Amazon since 2014. The Google Assistant was introduced with Google Pixel smartphones.
