The yet-to-be-named chipset will go against other flagship chipsets when it launches.

MediaTek also revealed key details about the chipset. For starters, it will be a 6nm processor that will be built by TSMC. It will also feature Arm Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 3.0GHz.

This chipset is most likely one of two reported to be coming soon by the Chinese leaker, Digital Chat Station. A little more than a week ago, he had revealed that the Taiwan-based company is developing 5nm and 6nm chipsets with cortex-A78 cores.

In a Weibo post today, the leaker also revealed that the 6nm processor has the model number MT689X and features the same CPU frequency and architecture as the Exynos 1080 which is scheduled to be announced at an event in China later this week.

MediaTek will announce the chipset before the end of the year and we may be lucky to see it appear on a phone this year too, most likely one from a Chinese company.

Alongside the Dimensity 700, MediaTek also announced two new processors designed for Chromebooks. The Taiwanese semiconductor company’s current offering of mobile processors powers several devices announced this year. Its Dimensity series can also be said to have made a significant contribution in pushing 5G phones into the hands of a lot more people.

If you are wondering what new chipsets MediaTek has cooking in its oven, The Chinese leaker, Digital Chat Station, has revealed some few details of two new processors.

The two chipsets are the MT6893 and MT6891 and they will be 5nm and or 6nm processors according to him. The two chipsets will be high-performance processors as they feature the more powerful Cortex-A78 Arm CPU core.

The Dimensity 1000+ which is currently MediaTek’s most powerful mobile processor has Cortex-A77 cores. It is also a 7nm chip. These new chips should bring significant boosts in performance as they are built on a smaller node and feature a more powerful CPU. They should also launch under the Dimensity series and with built-in 5G modems.

There is no news yet regarding when the new processors will be announced but the leaker says that development is progressing faster than last year’s chips. We expect more details will be revealed in the weeks leading up to their announcements.

The new cores and GPU technology is said to be more powerful and efficient than the previous generation’s Cortex-A77 cores and Mali-G77 GPU. ARM claimed that the new core generation will be 20 percent more energy efficient than its predecessors with a 25 percent bump in GPU performance as well. Unlike the Exynos 990, the Exynos 992 SoC is said to bring major upgrades over just minor improvements.

A notable improvement is the shift to the new 5nm fabrication process, which will be the company’s first. In comparison, Qualcomm’s current flagship mobile processor, the Snapdragon 865, uses a custom version of the ARM Cortex-A77 cores and Cortex-A55 for low power tasks. So we can expect the Exynos 992 SoC to rival the Snapdragon 865 Plus, which may launch later this year.

Along with that, the company has also introduced a new Mali-G78 GPU.

So, it’s safe to assume that the next-generation flagship smartphones getting launched in 2021 will have ARM Cortex-A78 CPU and Mali-G78 GPU. For those who are unaware, chipset makers like Qualcomm, Huawei, Samsung, etc. use designs created by ARM to make their own SoCs that powers all the smartphones.

ARM says that the newly announced Cortex-A78 CPU core design is “unquestionably our most efficient Cortex-A CPU ever designed for mobile.” It is claimed to offer a 20 percent increase in performance compared to last year’s Cortex-A77 design while staying within a 1-watt power budget.

The new Cortex-A78 pretty much continues Arm’s traditional design philosophy on balance between performance, power, and area (PPA). ARM has a track record of being able to provide competitive performance with low power consumption and small die areas.

The company has also introduced a new Cortex-A custom program. With this, its partners can create their own specialized Cortex CPU in conjunction with ARM for their specific purposes beyond the stock Cortex-A78. The first of those chips is the ARM Cortex-X1.

EDITOR’S PICK: TSMC could adjust orders from Qualcomm, NVIDIA and more to ramp up production of Huawei chips

The ARM Cortex-X1 will offer up to a 30 percent peak performance improvements over the Cortex-A77. The “Cortex-X Custom Program” is an evolution of “Built on Arm Cortex Technology” program that enabled customers to collaborate early in the design phase of a new microarchitecture, and request customizations to the configurations, such as a larger ROB, differently tuned prefetchers, or interface customizations for better integrations.

Besides new CPU designs, the company has also introduced a pair of new mobile GPUs — Mali-G78 and Mali-G68. While the G78 GPU is aimed at flagship smartphones, the G68 is meant for offering similar performance at a more affordable price point.

The new Mali-G78 supports 24 cores, up from 16, and the company promises that it will enable up to 25 percent increase in graphics performance compared to last year’s Mali-G77. ARM has also announced a new Ethos-N78 neural processing unit (NPU) which is promised to offer up to 25 percent improved performance efficiency over the Ethos-N77.

The Mali-G68 is the company’s first GPU targeted at the “sub-premium” market. It retains the FMA, dependency tracking, and tiler improvements from the G78 and comes with Asynchronous Top Level clock speed control. However, this budget GPU only scales between one and six cores.

The latter was the very first 5G equipped SoC on the market, with 10.3 billion transistors and 7nm EUV technology. However, the Kirin 990’s CPU / GPU architecture disappointingly saw no big upgrades, though that will finally change with the upcoming Kirin 1020 SoC.

The latest news shows that the Kirin 1020 processor is code-named “Baltimore”. It’s not surprising, since Huawei’s chips have always been named after cities. We also already know the chipset will be built with TSMC’s 5nm process for better power efficiency and more stable performance. The bigger change comes with the CPU cores however.

The Kirin 1020 will also use the new Cortex-A78 cores skipping the A77 cores that you can find in other flagship SoCs like the MediaTek 1000 Dimensity. When compared to the Cortex-A76 on the Kirin 990, the the new core architecture will allow the Kirin 1020 to easily gain a 50% performance improvement over its predecessor.

That’s a huge upgrade to what was already a fairly speedy SoC. On top of that, it gives Huawei the upper hand against other competitors like the aforementioned MediaTek, who are still relying on Cortex-A77 cores for performance. Nothing has been leaked regarding the GPU, but we’re hoping we can expect similarly big upgrade.
