Oppo is working to develop its own high end mobile chipsets for its premium grade flagship smartphones. The move from the company arrives to reduce its reliance on chipmaking firms like Qualcomm and MediaTek.

As of right now, the Chinese tech giant is the world’s fourth largest smartphone brand and is planning on begin shipping its custom made mobile chipsets sometime in the year 2023 or 2024. Earlier this year, the company had confirmed that it was working on its own self developed processors and now sources close to the matter has revealed to Nikkei Asia revealed the possible launch timeline of these upcoming chipsets.

Notably, this marks another Chinese brand joining the race of smartphone makers that are racing to make its own custom SoC (System on chips). At the moment, brands like Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi are developing their own chips for their processors. Even Google is working on custom made chips with its flagship Pixel 6 series launching with the new Tensor chipsets. The process of developing its own chips would enable Oppo to have better control over its own supply chain and might also help the impacts of the ongoing global shortages of semiconductors.

The sources also revealed that the company is working on 3nm production technology that is being offered by TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker. In other words, TSMC is also receiving another major smartphone brand as its new client, with Apple, Intel, AMD, and Nvidia being some of its other major customers.

A new job listing has just been spotted which hints that Microsoft is planning on making its own custom CPU. This move bears resemblance to Apple, who made a major shift away from Intel CPUs for its own custom M1 processor.

The job listing was first posted back on September 3 and was spotted by HotHardware. Looking at this listing, it appears that the American tech giant is seeking to hire someone to work for its Surface team that will “light up Microsoft experiences with the next generation of devices.” It also mentions how creating those devices involves “a close partnership between silicon, hardware and software engineers, designers, and manufacturing.” Notably, this role would have the person “defining the features and capabilities of SoC used on Surface devices.”

Interestingly, this is not the first time we’ve heard that the company is working on its own custom chipset. Back in December 2020, we had reported that Microsoft is working on its own ARM based processor for servers and Surface series PCs. Furthermore, the company could reportedly also be partnering up with AMD for this ARM based chip. Previously, it has already working with Qualcomm for the SQ1 and SQ2 chips that were found in the Surface Pro X, although, its performance was not on par with the Apple M1 chip.

As of right now, Microsoft does use its own custom chips for the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop Studio, which allows it to offer haptic feedback for inking with the Surface Slim Pen 2. With Apple having shifted to its own custom chips, it isn’t surprising when other tech giants are also rumored to follow suit. So stay tuned for more updates.

Xiaomi and Samsung have apparently partnered up to produce a new custom silicon. The two firms have reportedly held five meetings so far regarding the development of a SoC based on ARM Cortex X2 cores.

According to CLIEN.NET (Via NotebookCheck), ARM has yet to announce the Cortex X2, although, the new architecture is expected to be unveiled later this year. Similar to the partnership between the Chinese and South Korean tech giant, Qualcomm is also expected to adopt the new v9 architecture for its upcoming flagship SoCs. Even Samsung would likely use the new cores for its competing Exynos based processors as well.

Furthermore, the report also adds that Xiaomi would also seek to continue using ARM Mali GPUs over the Samsung and AMD’s combined offerings, due to limited units that might be available. In recent times, many companies are moving over to custom chipsets in the Android smartphone market. With Apple having moved its Mac series of PCs to its custom silicon, even Google is reported on working on a custom ‘Whitechapel’ SoC for its upcoming Pixel 6 series, which is expected to launch in Autumn of this year.

Unfortunately, this is still an unconfirmed report so take it with a pinch of salt. However, we had previously reported on the Chinese smartphone maker showing interest in developing custom silicon based chips, and this might be one of its efforts regarding the matter. Samsung is apparently collaborating with AMD and ARM to bring custom CPU cores for its Exynos line of processors. These new chips will likely be for its next generation of Galaxy S30 flagship series and will be a step in Samsung’s aim at becoming the top Android application processor (AP) maker.

After Huawei lost its Kirin chip supply from TSMC, the South Korean tech giant is the only Android OEM with its own custom chips. While the recent Exynos 990 SoC wasn’t on par with its Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 and 865+ SoC, the dynamics might change with the upcoming generation of flagship mobile processors. According to a report from Business Korea, the new custom CPU cores that are being built through the help of AMD and ARM could have the Exynos lineup see a massive improvement overall.

The report stated that Samsung is already working with ARM to create a new CPU based on the Cortex-X core, which was announced earlier this year and brought a 30 percent improvement in performance over the Cortex-A77. While ARM helps out on the CPU side of things, AMD will be helping Samsung in the graphics performance of its upcoming custom chips.

In the current market, Qualcomm has a lead in graphics processing with its Adreno GPU. Thus, to surpass the well established chipmaker, the South Korean OEM will have AMD develop custom GPU for its 2021 Exynos chips. Furthermore, the report also claims that the NPU (neural processing units) and the modems in the new chips will be better than Qualcomm’s offerings. Although, without the actual release, it is still too early to say which company’s chip will come out on top. So stay tuned.
