Dell has recently launched its XPS 13 laptop powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processor. Starting today, customers in India can buy this laptop through Amazon as well as Dell’s website.

The XPS 13 is the company’s thinnest and lightest XPS model yet. It runs on the Snapdragon X1 Elite processor (12 cores, up to 3.4 GHz, Dual Core Boost up to 4.0 GHz) and comes with the Qualcomm Adreno GPU and Qualcomm Hexagon NPU for smooth graphics and power efficiency. Users can choose between:

Dell launched the Snapdragon X Plus powered XPS 13 9345 laptop last month. Now the machine is on sale in China for a price tag of 11,999 yuan (US pricing is around $1300).

The body is made of aluminum and uses CNC precision cutting technology. The laptop comes with a thickness of 14.8mm and weighs only 1.17kg.

A Snapdragon-powered lightweight machine from Dell

Upon opening the lid you will be looking at a full-size keyboard, a seamless glass touchpad, and a smart touch function bar, which can switch function keys and media keys at will.

This laptop is equipped with a 13.4-inch 2880×1800 resolution OLED touch full screen, supporting 400nits brightness, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, and TÜV hardware anti-blue light. For audio, there are a total of 4 speakers (2 for low frequencies and 2 for high frequencies). There is a 1080p webcam for video calling. Notably, the new chip enables real-time noise reduction for better video calling.

Inside, the machine equips the newly released Arm-based Snapdragon X Plus chipset. This chipset comes with a total of 10 Qualcomm Oryon CPU cores, an integrated Adreno GPU that delivers “delivers graphics-intensive presentations and entertainment”, and the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU that delivers 45TOPS AI performance (which is reportedly the world’s fastest NPU for laptops as of now).

The chipset also focuses on a power-efficient operation, which has enabled the manufacturer to create such a lightweight machine without aggressive cooling or a massive battery.

Speaking of memory and storage, the laptop is equipped with 16GB LPDDR5x RAM with a speed of up to 8400MT/s and comes with 1TB SSD. You can also expand the storage to up to 4TB.

The new XPS 13 laptop comes with two Thunderbolt ports, one on each side.

DELL announced five Snapdragon-powered laptops last month – the XPS 13 (9345), Inspiron 14, Inspiron 14 Plus, Latitude 7455, and Latitude 5455. With the Snapdragon chip, the XPS 13 received a massive battery life improvement as compared to its Intel-powered version.

On the Computex keynote Qualcomm’s CEO Cristiano Amon invited Dell’s senior suit Sam Burd to task about the result of their adoption of the Snapdragon X Elite chip. As he said, the new Snapdragon-powered XPS 13 now “delivers multi-day battery life”.

The Snapdragon-powered laptops are clearly more efficient

He noted that the laptop achieves 27 hours of video streaming on a single charge. This is reportedly 9 hours more than the Intel version.

The XPS 13 with Intel’s Meteor Lake series Core Ultra 7 155H CPU equips the same 55Wh battery as the one with Snapdragon X Elite, X1E-80-100. The Snapdragon version is clearly much more power efficient as it houses the same 13.4-inch FHD+ display with 500 nits peak brightness. You get the same 60W Type-C adapter for charging as the Intel version.

The new Arm-based XPS 13 comes with 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD. For connectivity, you get 2 x full-function USB-C ports with 40Gbps bandwidth, Power Delivery, and DisplayPort support.

This laptop offers a Graphite backlit keyboard with a fingerprint reader and a multi-touch gesture-enabled precision touchpad with haptic feedback. You get a 1080p webcam for video calling alongside an IR camera for seamless facial recognition.

For audio, the machine equips a quad-speaker design that includes both a tweeter and woofer (2W x 4 = 8W total).

In addition to the power-efficient operation, you also get the benefit of the AI capabilities of the new chip. The new XPS 13 lets you experience Microsoft’s new Recall feature that can answer your questions based on what you have done or seen on your computer screen in recent times. Dell‘s latest additions to the XPS laptop family, the XPS 13, XPS 14, and XPS 16, are officially on sale. Announced in January 2024 following a leak in 2023, these models offer updated features and improved performance across the board.

The XPS 13 starts at $1,399, making it the most affordable option in the new lineup. For those requiring more screen space, the XPS 14 and XPS 16 are available starting at $1,699 and $1,899, respectively.

Key updates include the replacement of older models with these new versions: the XPS 16 takes over from the XPS 17, the XPS 14 from the XPS 15, and the XPS 13 from the XPS 13 Plus series. Each model brings significant enhancements in terms of processing power, storage, and display quality.

The XPS 16 features an Ultra 9 185H processor, 64GB of memory, and a 4TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, along with an RTX 4070 graphics card. It has a 16.3-inch OLED touchscreen with a resolution of 3840×2400, supporting touch, and a variable refresh rate of 48-90Hz. Its 14.5-inch OLED touchscreen supports a resolution of 3200×2000 and a 48-120Hz variable refresh rate. The laptop features a similar port array to the XPS 16, with a slightly slimmer 18mm profile, weighing between 1.68 to 1.74kg, and a 69.5Wh battery.

Lastly, the XPS 13 offers an Ultra 7 165H processor, 64GB of memory, and a 4TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. The 13.4-inch OLED touchscreen supports a resolution of 2800×1800 and a 48-60Hz refresh rate. It includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports, measures 14.8-15.3mm in thickness, and weighs 1.17-1.19kg, with a 55Wh battery.

The Dell XPS 13 Plus is the first OEM PC certified for Ubuntu 22.04 Long-Term Support, according to an announcement from Dell and Canonical. This comes ten years after Project Sputnik introduced a groundbreaking mix of Linux preloaded on a commercial notebook (LTS). This makes it a simple process to have a PC that simply functions without having to worry about whether or not each component is prepared to work with Linux.

The laptop already had Linux-equipped Developer Edition units that started at $1,289.00, but they still come pre-installed with the 20.04 LTS operating system. The end of normal support for this version is set for 2027, and the end of life is set for 2032, so long-term support releases do exactly what they say on the tin. As each component of certified devices is verified in a lab to ensure compatibility, your device will have the correct drivers loaded to ensure that all of its functions operate as intended.

That certainly applies to laptops that come pre-installed with Linux on Developer Edition models, but it also holds true if you’re upgrading an older computer that was pre-installed with Windows 11. Barton George, a marketing executive at Dell, was one of the persons in charge of Project Sputnik. He said that the Developer Edition label was added on purpose, to prevent users from inadvertently purchasing a Linux laptop to save a few dollars and experiencing an unexpected experience, in an interview with Forbes in 2019. It seems unlikely that the authorized list will remain this small indefinitely given that Dell already offers Ubuntu on a variety of other devices.

There were many improvements included in the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS package, which was launched on April 21 this year. These include improved Bluetooth audio device support, new touchpad gestures, and improved battery management.

There are several ways, according to Dell, to configure your XPS 13 Plus and its “capacitive touch function row” with a hardware-optimized version of 22.04. A new XPS 13 Plus laptop may be ordered and is expected to ship starting in August. If not, you can run a fresh install and be ready to go if you’re in a rush (and you should be). The final option is to postpone the upgrade process until Ubuntu 22.04.1 is released on August 4 so you may do as little work as possible. This will turn on the upgrade path for all LTS users.
