FUJIFILM Launches GFX100RF Camera in India: A Lightweight Powerhouse with 102MP Sensor and Fixed-Lens Design

FUJIFILM India has launched the GFX100RF, its first fixed-lens digital camera in the GFX Series. Weighing just 735g, it is the lightest model in the lineup, despite packing a 102MP large-format sensor and Fujifilm’s latest X-Processor 5. This combination delivers high-resolution imaging with improved dynamic range, color reproduction, and autofocus precision, all in a portable form factor aimed at professionals and enthusiasts alike.

The GFX100RF debuts a new Aspect Ratio Dial, offering nine formats, including newly added 3:4 and 17:6 ratios. It also includes a Digital Teleconverter Lever, letting users toggle focal lengths between 35mm, 45mm, 63mm, and 80mm (full-frame equivalents: 28mm, 36mm, 50mm, and 63mm). A two-axis tilt 3.15-inch LCD with 2.1M dots supports a redesigned interface and a surround view function for an OVF-like experience using its EVF.

A newly developed fixed 35mm F4 lens (28mm equivalent) supports close-up photography up to 20cm. With 10 elements in 8 groups, two aspherical lenses, and Nano GI coating, it reduces aberrations and reflections, delivering high resolution across the frame. The camera also includes a built-in 4-stop ND filter and a leaf shutter, enabling flash photography at any shutter speed.

The camera’s AI-powered autofocus can detect and track a wide variety of subjects, including people, animals, vehicles, and aircraft. For video, it supports 4K/30P 10-bit 4:2:2 recording with F-Log2, enabling 13+ stops of dynamic range. It also integrates with Frame.io’s Camera to Cloud workflow, supporting immediate upload of video and image files.

Design-wise, the GFX100RF features a precisely machined aluminum top plate, lens ring, dials, and bottom plate, providing a unified and premium feel. The package includes a weather-resistant adapter ring, PRF-49 filter, aluminum lens hood, and a new rope-style shoulder strap.

In Japan, digital cameras were once considered a household necessity. However the story has changed in the past few years, and smartphones have played a significant role here.

According to a survey conducted by the Japanese Cabinet Office by the end of 2023, only 48.6% of households in the country owned digital cameras. This is the first time since 2004 that the percentage has fallen below 50%. Reportedly, compact cameras are suffering the most. The graphical representation below shows the declining adoption rate of digital cameras in Japan over the years, compared to the increasing adoption of smartphones.

People are willing to trade some superior qualities for an unprecedented accessibility

Over the years, the evolution of smartphone camera systems, combined with easy access to the internet and the ability to share images on social media, has shifted people’s choice for fulfilling their imaging needs. Additionally, a smartphone’s computational photography tricks also make it easier for users to capture good photos without much effort. The most noticeable element in a recent flagship smartphone such as the Xiaomi 14 Ultra or the Oppo Find X7 Ultra is their camera system.

To top it off, the superior qualities of images captured by dedicated cameras often require trained eyes to be noticed.

The decline in the adoption of digital cameras in Japan has also been confirmed by the Japan International Camera and Imaging Products Association (CIPA). According to data, the shipment has dropped from 11.11 million units in 2008 to 910,000 units at present. Besides affecting the camera manufacturers, it has also affected the country’s overall competitiveness in the space.

Japan’s home appliance industry is also facing competition. According to the country’s Home Appliances Association, the production of goods in Japan has continued to decline over the past decade, from 7.7 trillion yen in 2000 to 3.8 trillion yen in 2022.

The value of the country’s imports of video recording and playback equipment has reportedly exceeded the value of exports. Specifically, in 2023, the trade balance showed that Japan imported 72.5 billion yen more of this equipment than it exported.

Ever improving Smartphone cameras force Nikon to shift its production out of Japan

Nikon Corp is set to end the production of camera bodies in Japan by the end of this year, as per officials. The news arrives as the company is seeing a decline in sales caused by the improving capabilities of smartphones in photography.

The camera making giant will be transferring production from its plant in Miyagi Prefecture, which is a part of its new structural reform. Its camera body production will then shift from its sole domestic camera production site to a major factory in Thailand. As per a company official, “The quality level of our products can be sustained even if they are made overseas.”

For those unaware, Nikon has been leading the camera industry since the launch of its first camera back in 1948. But since then, the company has been struggling due to intensifying competition in recent years. Especially with the entry of smartphones that have played a major role in the decline of the digital camera market, with improvements in smartphone camera technology shortening the gap in performance with digital cameras.

The company added that it will maintain employment at the factory by continuing the production of certain camera components and distributing the works to growth sectors such as health care and sensors. Similarly, the camera maker is also planning on shutting down two factories in Yamagata and Fukushima prefectures as well, which are responsible for the processing of removable lens parts for digital cameras.
