After nearly four decades, Microsoft finally gives its iconic Paint App a much-needed makeover. The tech giant is adding support for image transparency and layers, transforming the app from a mere digital doodle pad into something more versatile. Long associated with nostalgia, MS Paint is finally stepping into the realm of advanced image editing, yet maintaining its user-friendly interface.

It’s refreshing to see Microsoft showing love to some legacy apps

Dave Grochocki, Principal Product Manager for Windows Inbox Apps, elaborated on the revamp in a blog post. According to Grochocki, the new features will allow users to “create exciting new images and artwork.” For instance, the added layer and transparency functions, when used with the new background removal feature, will make complex compositions easier to achieve.

Getting the hang of these features is straightforward. A new ‘layer’ option now appears in the toolbar; clicking on it opens a side panel on the canvas. This panel lets you manage layers in a way that mimics more advanced photo editing software. You can hide, duplicate, merge, or delete layers, providing more creative control over your project.

As of now, the feature update is exclusive to those enrolled in the Windows Insider program. However, a broader rollout for all Windows users is expected soon. Although these updates may not be revolutionary, they are certainly a boon for MS Paint fans. Microsoft has sent a clear message: MS Paint is evolving, but it’s not going anywhere. So, if you’ve been clinging to MS Paint for its simplicity, brace yourself for a richer experience. Microsoft is not just preserving a piece of digital history; it’s enhancing it to meet the demands of modern users.
