The Android smartphone processor market has been largely dominated by two brands throughout its entire history, namely Qualcomm and MediaTek. Qualcomm has its Snapdragon chipsets to power Android smartphones, whereas MediaTek provides Android smartphones with its 5G-powered Dimensity chipsets. The Dimensity lineup has proven to be reasonably reliable over the past 3 years because all MediaTek Dimensity processors were manufactured by TSMC’s power-efficient and industry-leading technology.

However, in 2023, MediaTek decided to silently rebrand its Dimensity SoC lineup, which has led to much confusion as to which MediaTek chipset is better, and which processors are a big mistake.

Well in this article today, we will be dissecting and diving into MediaTek’s new naming scheme to inform our readers about which MediaTek processors are worth your attention and give the most bang for buck money can buy. To simplify matters, we’ve separated all Dimensity processors into 3 tiers (Tier A, Tier B, and Tier C), with Tier C being the worst ranked processors, and Tier A being the best ranked processors.

Tier C: Low-Performance Processors
Starting off with Tier C, there are 11 MediaTek Dimensity processors and they are ranked from worst to best in Table 1 below.

As you can see, all the newly rebranded Dimensity 6000 and 7000 series are ranked within Tier C. This is because Tier C chipsets have a very important characteristic that defines them, an octa-core CPU structure with only 2 Performance Cores and 6 Efficiency Cores. With fewer performance cores, the processors cannot run games at higher graphical settings, or tasks on the device may run at slower speeds. 

Generally, Tier C processors have benchmark scores from around 380k to 550k in Antutu, with one exception being the Dimensity 7200 which has achieved an Antutu score of nearly 740k. The reason could be that the processor is manufactured on TSMC’s newer 4nm process whilst also featuring the newer ARM Cortex A715 performance cores to provide more performance at the same power level as the A78 and A76.

Another interesting thing to note is the Dimensity 6080 (formerly known as the Dimensity 810). The Dimensity 6080 processor can be found in the recently-announced Redmi Note 13 this week, however, the same processor could also be found in the Redmi Note 11 (known globally as the Poco M4 Pro 5G) launched almost two years ago in 2021 back in China market. This means that your brand new 2023 budget Android smartphone could be using a budget processor that is almost 2 years old today, and yet the device is selling at a price which is brand new.

To wrap up, most Tier C processors have generally the same slower performance and do not have a high price-to-performance ratio (with a possible exception to the Dimensity 7200). If possible, look for Android smartphones with Tier B or Tier A processors instead.

Tier B: Upper Mid-Range Processors

Tier B is where the processors are fast and smooth enough for everyday tasks whilst still being able to game comfortably on medium graphical settings in your favourite games. There are 4 MediaTek Dimensity processors in this tier and they are listed from worst to best in Table 2 below.

One defining characteristic of Tier B processors is that they use an octa-core SoC structure, with 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores. With a balanced (4+4) setup, the SoC is able to handle high-performance tasks more smoothly, whereas for low-demand tasks, the efficiency cores can step up for lower power draw.

Tier B processors have garnered much praise for balancing their performance with their affordability, as these processors are found in budget flagship smartphones like the OnePlus Nord 2T and Xiaomi 11T. 

Tier A: Flagship Processors

Tier A includes MediaTek’s best processors in the Dimensity lineup, as they not only provide great performance, but great power efficiency as well for the smartphones they’re in!

Tier A includes 5 Dimensity processors, and they are listed below in Table 3.

Despite sporting the same processor structure (4+4) as Tier B processors, Tier A processors have one major advantage, which is that Tier A processors are manufactured on TSMC’s more advanced 5nm and 4nm process nodes. This improvement alone managed to boost performance by up to almost 20% whilst keeping power draw low to ensure that the device doesn’t overheat. The GPUs used by Tier A processors are also much more performant, allowing users to game at high or ultra-high graphical settings, which is unachievable on Tier B and C processors.

Tier A processors can be found in devices such as the affordable Redmi K50i, Poco X4 GT and OnePlus 10R, to the flagships such as the Vivo X90, Redmi K60 Ultra, and the upcoming Xiaomi 13T Pro. 

In conclusion, purchasing a smartphone with a Tier A MediaTek Dimensity processor is the best decision one can make to make their smartphone performance last long-term without much slowdown.

In December 2022, I reviewed the Infinix Hot 20 5G and now I am here reviewing its successor, the Infinix Hot 30 5G. The Hot 30 5G is yet again an exciting device for people who are looking forward to purchasing a 5G smartphone priced between Rs 10,000 (~$120) and Rs 15,000 (~$180).

The Hot 30 5G faces competition from the likes of Vivo T2x, Samsung Galaxy F14, Galaxy M14, Tecno Spark 10 5G, and Redmi 12 5G. There may be a few more in the same price range, but I haven’t mentioned them mainly because those devices haven’t launched in 2023. Here is a look at what is in store for people who purchase the Hot 30 5G.

Design and Display

Undoubtedly, the Infinix Hot 30 5G stands out as one of the most attractive devices among its competitors. It holds the distinction of being the sole phone in its price segment, launched this year, to sport a punch-hole display. While the device’s chin is slightly thicker, such a feature is unsurprising given its affordable price point.

The plastic frame of the Hot 30 5G boasts a glossy allure, featuring a SIM card slot on the left-hand side, a speaker grille at the top, a volume rocker and a power key integrated with a fingerprint scanner, and on the bottom, a 3.5mm audio jack, a microphone, a USB-C port, and another speaker grille. The device lacks a secondary microphone. It comes with an IP53-rating for splash resistance.

As evident, Infinix provided me with the Aurora Blue variant of the device for this review. The Hot 30 5G’s polycarbonate rear panel boasts a matte finish, which does not attract fingerprint marks at all. There are two equal-sized camera rings and a quad-LED flash positioned at the top-left corner of the phone’s back. The camera island, where the dual cameras and LED flash are placed, features an eye-catching glittery design, exuding a reflective allure.

Weighing in at 215 grams, the phone carries a slight heft. What might account for this? It’s likely attributed to its sizable 6,000mAh battery and the expansive 6.78-inch screen it accommodates. After all, Infinix has consistently delivered larger displays and batteries within its Hot-series smartphones.

Moving on to the display, the Infinix Hot 30 5G packs a 6.78-inch IPS LCD panel that offers a Full HD+ resolution of 2460 x 1080 pixels, a 20.5:9 aspect ratio, and up to 580 nits of brightness. The display is usable outside. I noticed a slight blue tint on the screen, but switching to warm color profiles got me covered. When it comes to refresh rate, the device offers options, such as auto-switch, 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz. The Hot 30 5G comes with support for Widevine L1, which can stream HD content from OTT platforms.

Turning our attention to the speakers, the phone delivers stereo output via its dual-speaker system. However, the sound doesn’t seem to be evenly balanced; rather, it leans towards a 60:40 bottom-to-top ratio in terms of sound distribution. Nonetheless, in most instances, users may not discern this disparity while watching a movie or playing a game, as the device generally produces an impressive audio output.

Performance and Software

The Dimensity 6080, the powerhouse driving the Infinix Hot 30 5G, is essentially a rebranded iteration of the Dimensity 810 chipset. It is complemented by up to 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM, with an additional 8GB of virtual RAM, and up to 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage.

The Infinix Hot 30 5G isn’t targeted solely at gamers; instead, it is an affordable 5G phone designed to serve as your daily driver while offering some level of gaming. I tested games like Call of Duty Mobile on “High” settings and played Shadow Fight without encountering significant issues. While gaming, the device warms up slightly, but during regular use, it maintains a cool temperature, ensuring overall comfort.

The Hot 30 5G is equipped with a sizable 6,000mAh battery, which I believe can provide up to 1.5 days of usage. The phone’s retail package includes an 18W charger, which takes well over 2 hours to fully charge the device.

In terms of the software experience, the Infinix Hot 30 5G comes preloaded with XOS 13-based Android 13. While it offers numerous features such as Split Screen, Peek Proof, Kids Mode, and Hi Trnslat, there are several preinstalled apps that you may find unnecessary. Similar to many other brands in this price segment, the device does come with a certain amount of bloatware. Here is a look at how the device performed on AnTuTu (3D Bench Lite), Geekbench, and CPU Throttle.’

Photography and Other Features

The Infinix Hot 30 5G offers various photography modes, including Film, Video, AI Cam (the default mode for still photos), Beauty, Portrait, and Super Night Mode. The primary camera of the Hot 30 5G performs well under sufficient lighting conditions and can even capture decent shots in low-light environments. The provided images demonstrate that the Super Night mode effectively prevents light bleeding from light sources.

As a user who routinely tests various smartphones, I use gridlines and the horizontal level feature when taking shots. I observed a minor issue with the accuracy of the horizontal line, which serves as a visual indicator. This slight inaccuracy affected images where maintaining a straight horizon is crucial for achieving visual balance. However, this concern is relatively minor in the grand scheme of things. The Hot 30 5G can shoot up to 2K videos at 30 fps. Features like Bokeh Effect and AI filters are available while shooting. There is no support for video stabilization on the device.

Regarding the front camera performance, the Infinix Hot 30 5G is capable of producing impressive selfies under well-lit conditions. However, selfies taken in dimmer lighting conditions exhibit a noticeable increase in image noise. While its ability to capture portrait shots is of moderate quality, it still delivers satisfactory results. In conclusion, the Hot 30 5G manages to meet expectations in the camera department, especially when considering its price point.

It is worth mentioning that I did not encounter any issues while using features like the fingerprint scanner and face unlock. The device is also equipped with a microSD card slot and NFC, which can be used for contactless payments.

Verdict

The Infinix Hot 30 5G stands out as the only 5G-ready phone in its price segment, offering a remarkable combination of a 120Hz display, an impressive 6,000mAh battery, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. While the Hot 30 5G’s Dimensity 6080 may be overshadowed by the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 found in the Redmi 12 5G – a 4nm chip – the Hot 30 possesses distinct advantages in areas such as its higher refresh rate screen, audio quality, and extended battery life. Consequently, the Hot 30 5G becomes an irresistible contender when seeking a versatile and affordable 5G phone.

After launching the Y35m and Y78 smartphones last month, Vivo is now working on a new smartphone called the Vivo Y27. The device has already emerged on the NCC and EEC certification websites as well as the Google Play Console. These listings have previously revealed the specifications of the upcoming smartphone. Now, the device has emerged on Geekbench revealing its performance.

According to its Geekbench listing, the device identified by the model number V2248 features an octa-core processor with a base clock speed of 2GHz and a boost clock speed of 2.2GHz. This processor is speculated to be the Dimensity 6020.

The listing also mentions that the device is equipped with 8GB of RAM and runs on the Android 13 operating system. In the Geekbench 6 tests, the device achieved a score of 595 in the single-core test and 1770 in the multi-core test. The listing does not mention any further details about the device, so let’s look at what is known from the previous leaks.

Based on leaked specifications, it is speculated that the Vivo Y27 5G might be a rebranded version of the Vivo Y36 5G. If this is the case, the Y27 5G is likely to sport a 6.64-inch LCD FHD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The device is expected to come with a dual-camera system consisting of a 50-megapixel main camera and a 2-megapixel secondary camera. For selfies, it may feature a 16-megapixel front-facing camera. Additionally, the Y27 5G is rumored to be powered by a 5,000mAh battery with support for 44W fast charging.

The Vivo Y35+ 5G and Vivo Y35m+ 5G smartphones have been launched in China. Both phones have the same model number, V2279A, and identical specifications and designs. At present, only the Y35+ is available for purchase in the home market. Here is a look at the specifications, features, and price of the Y35+.

Vivo Y35+ 5G, Y35m+ 5G specifications and features

The Vivo Y35+ 5G has a 6.64-inch IPS LCD panel with a waterdrop notch design. It offers an FHD+ resolution of 2388 x 1080 pixels, a 19.9:9 aspect ratio, a 60Hz refresh rate, and a 1400:1 contrast ratio. According to the brand, the device offers a 90.89 percent screen-to-body ratio.

The device is equipped with an 8-megapixel front camera and a 50-megapixel camera with LED flash on the back. The handset runs on Android 13 OS with OriginOS 3.0 on top. It has a side-facing fingerprint scanner.

Under the hood, the Y35+ features the Dimensity 6020 chipset, up to 8 GB of LPDDR4x RAM, and up to 256 GB of UFS 2.2 storage. There is a microSD card slot onboard for more storage. It has a 5,000mAh battery with 18W charging support.

The other features of the Y35+ include dual SIM, 5G, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, a USB-C port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The Y35m+ is packed with the same specs as the Y35+.

Vivo Y35+ 5G, Y35m+ 5G price and availability

The Vivo Y35+ has arrived in three configurations in China: 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage for 1,399 Yuan (~$198), 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage for 1,599 Yuan (~$226), and 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage for 1,799 Yuan (~$254). It comes in different shades, such as Star Ring Black, Salt Lake Blue, and Nebula Purple.

The Vivo Y35+ comes in 8 GB RAM + 128 GB and 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage for 1,599 Yuan (~$226) and 1,799 Yuan (~$254), respectively. It comes in Star Ring Black and Ripple Green colors. As mentioned above, it is not available for purchase yet.

On April 11, Vivo unveiled the Vivo T2 5G and Vivo T2x 5G smartphones in India. The T2, which starts at Rs 18,999 (~$231), has been available for purchase since April 18. Starting today, the T2x is available for purchase in the country. The T2x has arrived as Vivo’s most affordable 5G-enabled smartphone.

Vivo T2x 5G price in India

The Vivo T2x 5G is available in India in 4 GB, 6 GB, and 8GB RAM variants. These models are priced at Rs 12,999 (~$158), Rs 13,999 (~$170), and Rs 15,999 (~$195), respectively. All three models have 128 GB of internal storage.

The device is available for purchase through Flipkart and Vivo India’s online store. It can be bought in shades like Glimmer Black, Marine Blue, and Aurora Gold.

Customers can avail up to Rs 1,000 discount using HDFC and ICICI bank cards when purchasing the smartphone through Flipkart. Hence, the T2x can be bought for as low as Rs 11,999 (~$146).

Vivo T2x 5G specifications

The Vivo T2x 5G houses a 6.58-inch IPS LCD FHD+ panel with a teardrop notch. The phone runs on Android 13 OS with the FunTouch OS 13 on top. For security, it has a side-facing fingerprint scanner.

The T2x has an 8-megapixel selfie camera. The back panel of the device features a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 2-megapixel depth sensor, and an LED flash.

The Dimensity 6020 chipset is present under the hood. It houses up to 8 GB of LPDDR4x RAM, up to 3 GB of extended RAM, 128 GB of UFS 2.2 storage, and a 5,000mAh battery with 18W charging. Some of its other features include dual SIM, 5G, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, a USB-C port, a microSD card slot, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Honor has confirmed that it will announce the Honor X50i smartphone on April 21 in China. The launch date poster released by the brand does not reveal anything on the specifications of the device. However, it does give a hint about the rear camera module of the X50i. It reveals that its camera module will have an “8-like design.

While Honor has not revealed anything about the Honor X50i, Chinese tipsters have already shared its live shots and key specifications on Weibo. Here is a look at the leaked specifications of the X50i.

Honor X50i specifications (rumored)

According to reports, the Honor X50i will arrive with a 6.7-inch IPS LCD panel with a centrally positioned punch-hole. It will support a Full HD+ resolution of 2388 x 1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 90Hz. It is likely that the device will come preloaded with Android 13 OS and the latest Magic UI.

The Honor X50i will arrive with the Dimensity 6020 chipset. The smartphone will come in three configurations, such as 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage, 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage, and 12 GB RAM + 256 GB storage. It will come equipped with a 4,500mAh battery that supports 35W fast charging.

On the front, the Honor X50i will have an 8-megapixel camera. Its back panel will be equipped with a 100-megapixel primary camera, a 2-megapixel depth sensor, and a triple LED flash.

There is no information on the price of the Honor X50i. At present, the X50i is available for reservations through online retailers in China. The leaked shots of the device revealed that it will arrive in blue and black colors. It remains to be seen whether it will be available in additional colours.

Honor has silently unveiled the Honor Play 7T and Play 7T Pro smartphones in China today. These devices replace the Play 6T and Play 6T Pro handsets that were announced in the same month last year.  In terms of specifications, the Play 7T appears to be a tweaked version of the Honor Play 40 Plus.

The Honor Play 7T Pro is rebranded version of the Honor X40i, which was announced in July 2022. Here is a look at the specifications, features, and price of the Play 7T duo.

Honor Play 7T specifications, price

The Honor Play 7T measures 167.48 x 76.85 x 8.27mm and weighs 196 grams. It has a 6.74-inch IPS LCD panel that offers an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1,600 pixels, a 20:9 aspect ratio, and a 90Hz refresh rate. It is powered by the latest MediaTek Dimensity 6020 chipset. The device comes with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB / 256 GB of built-in storage. It ships with Magic UI 6.1 based on Android 12 OS.

The display notch of the Play 7T houses a 5-megapixel selfie camera, and its back panel has a dual-camera setup featuring a 64-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. For security, it has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. To keep the lights on, the Play 7T has a 6,000mAh battery that supports 22.5W fast charging.

The Honor Play 7T comes in two configurations: 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage for 1,099 Yuan (~$160) and 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage for 1,299 Yuan (~$189). Its pre-sale is now live in China and is set to go no sale from April 4. It will be available in three colors: Magic Night Black, Start Dram Sliver, and Charm Blue Sea.

Honor Play 7T Pro specifications, price

The Honor Play 7T Pro has 162.9 x 74.5 x 7.43mm dimensions and weighs 175 grams. It is fitted with a 6.74-inch LTPS LCD punch-hole screen that produces a Full HD+ resolution of 2388 x 1080 pixels, and a 90Hz refresh rate. The device is powered by the Dimensity 6020 chipset and 8 GB of RAM. The Play 7T Pro comes in 128 GB and 256 GB of storage options. Both models offer the same amount of RAM. It ships with Magic UI 6.1 based on Android 12 OS.

The Pro model is blessed with an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. The rear camera setup of the device has a 50-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensing unit. The 4,000mAh battery of the device carries support for 40W fast charging. It also features a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The Honor Play 7T Pro also comes in two options, such as 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage for 1,499 Yuan (~$218) and 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage for 1,699 Yuan (~$247). Its pre-sale is now live in China and is set to go no sale from April 4. It will be available in three colors: Magic Night Black, Xingmeng Silver, and Moyuqing Green.

On March 28, Honor will remove the covers from the Honor Play 7T mid-range 5G phone in China. It will arrive as a successor to the Play 6T from last year. Today, the brand rolled out a new poster to reveal the front and rear designs of the Play 7T. In addition, it has also confirmed the key specifications of the device.

Honor Play 7T design

The poster reveals that the Honor Play 7T will have a teardrop notch screen, which seems to be an LCD panel. The bottom edge of the device has a 3.5mm audio jack, a microphone, a USB-C port, and a speaker grille. Even though it can’t be seen in the picture, the device seems to have a fingerprint scanner on the side.

Honor Play 7T specifications

According to Honor, the Play 7T is fitted with a 6.74-inch panel. Like the predecessor model, the device may support an HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate.

The device will arrive in 128 GB and 256 GB storage versions. Both models will be equipped with 8 GB of RAM. It will be backed by a 6,000mAh battery. It is expected to run on Android 13 OS with Magic OS 7.1 on top.

It is speculated that the Honor Play 7T will feature the Dimensity 6020, which went official. The new chip offers performance similar to the existing Dimensity 700. Rumors are rife that the Play 7T will be a tweaked edition of the Honor Play 40 Plus, which debuted in October 2022.

Last year, Honor unveiled the Honor Play 6T Pro alongside the Play 6T in April. At present, there is no information available on the existence of the Honor Play 7T Pro.

Without any fanfare, the iQOO Z7i has gone official in the Chinese market today. It is the world’s first smartphone to feature the Dimensity 6020 chipset. As per the official page of the D6020 chip, it is a 7nm chip that includes 2 x ARM Cortex-A76 CPU cores working at up to 2.2GHz, 6 x ARM Cortex-A55 CPU cores clocking at up to 2GHz, and an ARM Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. The CPU and GPU details suggest that it is a rebranded or tweaked version of the existing Dimensity 700 SoC.

iQOO Z7i specifications and features

The iQOO Z7i has a 6.51-inch IPS LCD display with a waterdrop notch. It offers a Full HD+ resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels, a 20:9 aspect ratio, a 60Hz refresh rate, DC dimming, and 88.99 percent screen space. It features a 5-megapixel front camera and a 13-megapixel (main) + 2-megapixel (macro) dual-camera setup on the back.

The Dimensity 6020-powered iQOO Z7i ships with 4 GB / 6 GB / 8 GB of LPDDR4x RAM, up to 8 GB of virtual RAM, and 128 GB of UFS 2.2 storage. There is a microSD card slot on the device for additional storage. It runs on Android 13 with the OriginOS Ocean UI on top.

The Z7i has a 5,000mAh battery that supports 15W fast charging. The device offers other features, such as dual SIM, 5G, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, a USB-C port, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

iQOO Z7i price and availability

The iQOO Z7i comes in three variants, such as 4 GB RAM + 128 GB storage for 899 Yuan (~$131), 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage for 1,099 Yuan (~$160), and 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage for 1,199 Yuan (~$175). It can be bought in colors like Moon Shadow and Ice Lake Blue. The device is scheduled to be available for purchase starting March 20.

In related news, iQOO will unveil the iQOO Z7 and Z7x smartphones on March 20 in China. These devices are expected to feature the Snapdragon 782G and Snapdragon 695 chipsets, respectively.
