<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-334557 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei HiSilicon FHD Chip for Smart TVs" width="1080" height="600" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform.jpg 1080w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-300x167.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-768x427.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-1024x569.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-696x387.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-1068x593.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-756x420.jpg 756w" sizes="(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px" /></p>
<p>Notably, China&#8217;s driver ICs for displays account for less than 1 percent of the total market share. So, the Chinese tech giant entering into the field could significantly boost the presence of China in the market. For those unaware, a driver IC chip acts as the main control panel in a system, which manages the image quality being displayed by the screen and its energy efficiency as well. In other words, these driver chips are a core technology that are used in electronic gadgets like smartphones and TVs with a large screen.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/30/moto-g-5g-with-6-7-inch-display-snapdragon-750g-5000mah-battery-and-48mp-quad-cameras-launched-in-india/">Moto G 5G with 6.7-inch display, Snapdragon 750G, 5,000mAh battery and 48MP quad cameras launched in India</a></strong></h6>
<p>Traditionally, driver chip technology is based around the ARM architecture, which is also subject to the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/17/us-reinforces-restrictions-on-huaweis-access-to-chips-and-other-tech/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">US technology restriction against Huawei</a>. So, the new chip arrives as a custom built chip made by the company. At the moment, the OLED driver chip market is dominated by South Korean companies like Samsung, which accounts for nearly 75 percent of market, and Magnachip accounting for about 20 percent, as per a <a href="https://news.mydrivers.com/1/726/726807.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>MyDrivers</em> </a>report.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-268731 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/9sjoum0c_huawei-logo-afp_625x300_07_March_19.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="650" height="400" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/9sjoum0c_huawei-logo-afp_625x300_07_March_19.jpg 650w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/9sjoum0c_huawei-logo-afp_625x300_07_March_19-300x185.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/9sjoum0c_huawei-logo-afp_625x300_07_March_19-356x220.jpg 356w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></p>
<p>With the growth in display technology demands, many companies have strengthened research into driver ICs; and it seems that Huawei has also joined seeking to expand its presence in the segment with its chip designing sub brand, HiSilicon. According to Huawei CEO, Yu Chengdong, the new chips are taped out, and will begin mass production within the year. These chips are expected to be equipped in both Huawei smartphones and TVs that will launch next year. Analysts believe that the chips might already be in mass production and could help reduce China&#8217;s reliance on foreign driver chips.</p>

The Chinese tech giant is entering the industry to offer display driver chips according to Weibo tipster @长安数码君.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class=" wp-image-336449 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-73.png?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="515" height="424" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-73.png 741w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-73-300x247.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-73-696x573.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-73-510x420.png 510w" sizes="(max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px" /></p>
<p>The leak on the Chinese microblogging website shared a document, which was titled &#8220;Notice on the establishment of the terminal chip business unit in the field of display driver products,&#8221; by Huawei&#8217;s Yu Chengdong (or Richard Yu). In the notice, it was stated that most major producers had display driver chips imported from abroad. For those unaware, these chips are key components of the display and act as the brain behind the whole operations.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/11/realme-rmx2176-key-specifications-leak-reveals-6-43-inch-oled-display-64mp-quad-cameras-4300mah-battery-and-more/">Realme RMX2176 key specifications leak reveals 6.43-inch OLED display, 64MP quad cameras, 4,300mAh battery and more</a></strong></h6>
<p>Thus, it seems like Huawei plans on producing these chips as well, to keep the supply chain local for other Chinese brands and gaining a new market to sell to. At the moment, the company has 5 different lineups of chips including <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/kirin/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Kirin</a> for smartphones, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/kunpeng/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Kunpeng</a> chips for servers, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/ascend/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ascend</a> AI Chips, GigaHome for routers, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/honghu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Honghu</a> for smart displays.</p>

<p>Despite China being a major producer and exporter of displays, the region only has local display driver chips worth 5 percent in the market. These chips are specifically designed for LED screens and have brought a quantum leap in the technology. With China being such a large market for such technology it arrives as no surprise that Huawei is diversifying to these types of chips as well.</p>
