Earlier this week, Tianma Microelectronics announced at the Wuhan Tianma G6 Industrial Base, that it has signed a new partnership deal with Xiaomi Corp. With this new agreement, both companies will seek to study and develop new display technologies through a new joint laboratory.

This new facility will feature independent labs, which will rely on the Chinese tech giant’s vast resources in consumer electronic products and Tianma’s innovative platform for the next generation of display technology (Via PanDaily). Some of the objectives of the joint laboratory includes research and development into new display technology, along with study and verification of equipment and materials related to these new technologies.

Furthermore, the new lab will also work directly with upstream and downstream of the industrial chain to improve its R&D capabilities. The goal is to develop new slim, lightweight, portable, and energy efficient display panel technology and to commercialize the mass production of this as well. Cheng Wei, Executive Vice President of Tianma Microelectronics, stated that the new joint lab enables the company to gain access to the industry chain ranging from the market, to terminals, and even parts manufacturers as well.

In other words, it will accelerate the development cycle of new display panels and bring new technologies into the market faster. For those unaware, the smartphone maker and Tianma Microelectronics maintain a close relationship with one another, with the latter supply the displays used in a number of the former’s smartphones and smart wearable products as well. So, it arrives as no surprise that the brands are seeking to further expand on their cooperation in areas like flexible OLED panels in the arriving year.

India has recently approved a new 10 billion US Dollar incentive plan. This large sum will be used to lure in certain semiconductor and display makers, as per Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

According to a Reuters report, a number of semiconductor manufacturers have apparently shown interest in this plans, with Israel’s Tower Semiconductor, known Apple supplier Foxconn, and a Singapore based consortium mulling plans to set up a semiconductor fabrication site in India. Similarly, display maker Vedanta Group has also shown interest in building a display manufacturing factory in India as well, as per sources close to the matter.

As of right now, the government has approved a design linked incentive (DLI) plan that will encourage 100 local companies in semiconductor design for integrated circuits and chipsets. As per technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, “Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) has taken a historic decision today that will help develop the complete semiconductor ecosystem — from the design of semiconductor chips to their fabrication, packing and testing — in the country.” Notably, India’s 10 billion US Dollar plan arrives as the world is still suffering from an ongoing global shortage of chipsets.

But meanwhile, the Tata Group also has plans to venture into the semiconductor business with three states to invest up to 300 million US Dollars. This would even have it build a semiconductor assembly and test unit as well. In recent times, various display makers have launched their own iteration of a foldable display and have been developing the new breed of screen technology. And now, Tianma Microelectronics has announced a new CFOT foldable display, which arrives with various improvements like lowered power consumption.

The Chinese display manufacturer officially announced the new folding screen, which will be commercially available in the near future. It is the new CFOT foldable display that features certain improvements over other alternatives from competing brands. As per the official announcement, the new folding screen consumes significantly less power while the thickness of the display is also reduced as well. Notably, the display has a size of 8.3 inches.

This display would be aimed at foldable handsets from smartphone vendors. Furthermore, the display maker also announced that it seeks to develop and invest a lot of resources into the field of small and medium sized screens along with newer display technologies as well. This development would be further backed by the establishment of an innovation center, which will focus on research and development of advanced technologies.

These advances technologies include foldable displays, HTD, CFOT, MLP, and under display camera technology. Additionally, Tianma Microelectronics also aims to focus on the research and development of OLED panels through its independent R&D test line platform. The center would also be used for the development of new and upcoming technologies like MicroLED and other sensor technology as well.

China-based BOE Technologies has today launched its latest intelligent dimming solutions that can control the rotation of dye molecules to change the transmittance under-voltage drive and offer continuous adjustment of light.

As per the report, compared to other dimming solutions, these have advantages of high transparency, low power consumption, and faster response. The company adds that they have the effects of sound insulation, heat insulation, and UV protection, and are suitable for passenger car sunroofs. As for the side window, it can be well-integrated into the passenger car smart cockpit.

BOE Skylight Dimming Window

It is based on BOE’s LCD dimming technology and adopts the free-form surface design of the sunroof, which the company claims is leading a new trend of the development of passenger car intelligent panoramic sunroof.

It supports dimming of the entire surface or partitions of it. It also has better heat insulation performance and can replace traditional sunshade curtains. There’s also support for voice-based and touch-based controls.

Side Window Dimming

Similar to the sunroof model, the side-window offering from BOE also supports dimming of the entire glass or just a portion of it. It is based on the BOE’s ultra-thin intelligent dimming technology and matches the light-weight demand.

It can reduce glare and block ultraviolet rays, enabling users to enjoy the beautiful scenery through the window been during harsh sunlight. It also provides a more user-friendly approach for interaction.

The company adds that in addition to the side window for a car, it has broad use-case scenarios, such as in high-speed rail, shipbuilding, aviation, architectural lighting roofs, and curtain walls, among others.

At the on-going IFA 2020 in Berlin, TCL has introduced its latest display technology — TCL NXTPAPER. Along with that, the China-based company has also announced two new tablets featuring the newly launched display technology.

TCL describes the NXTPAPER display technology as the “artistic combination of screen and paper.” The display offers Full-HD resolution for paper-like visual experience in full color with no flicker and no harmful blue light.

It is an alternative color e-ink display but comes with advanced features that overcome some of the limitations of the color e-ink display such as a limited color palette, slow screen refresh rate, and reduced pixel density, among others.

The company achieved this by combining a highly reflective screen that uses TCL’s display technology to reuse natural light and has received eye protection certifications from the German Rhine laboratory as well as SGS laboratory and German VDE.

Compared to the traditional e-ink displays, the TCL NXTPAPER offers a 25 percent higher contrast for better viewing. The company also claims that it is 36 percent thinner when compared to a typical LCD panel.

NXTPAPER display technology is also over 65 percent more power-efficient than a typical LCD, allowing for much better battery efficiency and overall longer device battery life. The company has designed it for larger format devices, such as tablets.

While this new display technology is ideal for reading, it also allows smooth video playback for offering a better work and learning experience. The brand has also announced two tablets using this NXTPAPER display — TCL 10 TABMAX and TCL 10 TABMID, both of which are set to go on sale by the end of this year.
