DJI‘s replacement for the FPV drone dubbed Avata has been officially unveiled by the company. The DJI Avata, which was the sole product revealed at the “Born to Fly” hardware launch event held on Thursday, improves on its predecessor with a more durable body and a major camera upgrade. Additionally, as several leaks hinted would be the case, the updated goggles for the new first-person view (FPV) drone are available for purchase.

The DJI Avata, a consumer drone DJI released this year, weighs 410 g, which is much more than the Mini 3 Pro. As anticipated, the DJI Avata uses the same 48 MP CMOS sensor with a 1/1.7-inch optical format and a 155-degree field-of-view as the Mini 3 Pro. According to DJI, the Avata’s sensor delivers 100–25,600 ISO, 4-in-1 pixel binning, and shutter speeds that range from 1/50s to 1/8,000s.

The DJI Avata can also record videos in 2.7K at 120 FPS or 4K at 60 FPS. Micro-OLED screens in the new DJI Goggles 2 work at 1080p and 100 frames per second. According to rumors, the DJI Avata and DJI Goggles 2 interact with a latency of only 30 ms, making it feasible to execute complex maneuvers with ease. As expected, the battery life is very short; DJI claims that the Avata has an 18-minute flight time at a speed of 27 meters per second. The DJI Avata should be able to travel 11.6 km in that period, to put it briefly.

Without a remote control or goggles, the DJI Avata costs $629 at launch. The DJI Motion Controller, DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, and DJI FPV Goggles V2 are all compatible with the FPV Drone. As an alternative, DJI offers the Fly Smart Combo, which costs $1,168 and contains both the DJI Motion Controller and the DJI FPV Goggles V2. In contrast, the Pro-View Combo costs $1,388 and includes both the DJI Motion Controller and the DJI Goggles 2. Pre-ordered units will start shipping from August 30.
