Do you remember the DOOGEE S98? The rugged phone with a watch on the back. DOOGEE recently launched their upgraded version: S98 Pro. The S98 Pro is not a performance upgrade like replacing a better processor, but a functional upgrade. And I believe this strategy will be the new trend for rugged phones this year.

The DOOGEE S98 Pro comes in the same box as the S98, with the phone’s model and storage space written in the lower right corner. Open the lid of the package, the accessories in the package are our old friends. DOOGEE S98 Pro comes in a box with a white pry bar, 33w charger, and charging cable. It also contains instructions manual, and an extra film, this time with some tools for the film. There is also a phone case. Instead of this case to protect your rugged phone, it is used to decorate your phone.

DOOGEE calls this case the “Alien-inspired case”, which makes the S98 Pro look like an alien from the movie. Of course, if you don’t like the adorable alien, you can take off the case. The back of the S98 Pro is almost the same as the Doogee S98, also with a leather-like design. The biggest difference is still in the lens module part, where the watch-like screen in the middle is replaced by a sensor. This sensor is the biggest upgrade of this Pro version, and we will come back to this sensor in detail later. The S98 Pro also has NFC and custom buttons, and the SIM Card Tray can be fitted with two SIM cards and a Macro SD card, so at least in terms of design, the Pro version is not much changed.

The S98 Pro uses an FHD+ LCD screen. This screen has the same specs as the standard version except the peak brightness is 200nit higher than the standard version. The protective glass of Corning Gorilla plus IP68 and IP69K certifications allow you to use it in any harsh outdoor environment. One of the advantages I like about the rugged phone is that you can clean the phone with water when it gets dirty, so you never have to worry about damaging the phone by getting water in it.

What is the interesting feature that we talked about at the beginning? It’s this new thermal imaging camera. This sensor in the middle of the two cameras is a real thermal imaging sensor, which can capture real infrared radiation images.

You may have seen a similar filter on Tiktok, but that is fake, and this is real. As soon as you turn on InfiRay, you can see the IR image. It is important to know that buying a thermal imaging camera alone may cost several hundred dollars, which is a considerable amount of money. The most direct way to use it is to use it as a night vision camera.

It is easier to find nearby creatures in the dark compared to Night vision Camera. Or when repairing electronic equipment can be used to judge where the problem is coming from. DOOGEE’s thermal imaging camera also has MIX mode, which allows you to mix RGB images and IR images to make it easier to tell what the subject is. I would like to explain that it is impossible to see people behind walls with thermal imaging cameras in movies or games. In fact, thermal imaging can’t even see through paper or glass, so don’t worry about the privacy of others.

The left and right cameras are the 20MP Night vision camera and the 48MP main camera. Although there is no more Ultra-wide camera, the performance of the main camera is even better. The DOOGEE S98 Pro comes with the MediaTek Helio G96 processor. The standard version of the S98 also uses this processor. According to the results of Benchmark Tests, the Antutu Bench score is 330,000 and the 3DMark score is close to 1200. Game performance is the same as the standard version, mainstream light load games stable at 40fps is no problem.

The 33w wired charging power and 15w wireless charging are also standard on DOOGEE’s flagship phones. 6000mAh battery has not been upgraded, but it can also support you for two to three days without charging.

DOOGEE has announced the launch date and price for its latest S98 Pro rugged smartphone. The phone which comes in a unique Alien-inspired design is all set to launch on 6 June 2022 for a world premiere discounted price of $329 only.

So let’s take a detailed look at the specs and price of DOOGEE S98 Pro.

The Alien-inspired unique design of the S98 Pro has won the brand the prestigious European Good Design Award. The rugged smartphone comes with a specially designed rear camera island which apparently is inspired by an Aliens head and to complement this theme the brand has also come up with an exotic alien-inspired protective case. 

The highlight feature of the DOOGEE S98 Pro lies in its specially designed rear camera island. The island holds a pro-grade thermal sensor in the center flanked by a  48MP SONY IMX582 primary camera and a 20MP SONY IMX350 night vision camera. Last time I reviewed the DOOGEE V20, a flagship rugged phone with an OLED screen, Iwas very impressed with it. But today’s star is equally impressive, the DOOGEE S98. It’s also DOOGEE’s newest flagship phone. And it is also a little different from other rugged phones on the market.

DOOGEE S98 Box

The DOOGEE S98 comes in the same large flat square box as the V20. When you open the lid, the package contains almost the same accessories as the V20 and is placed in the same place. There is the white pry bar that helps you open the SIM Card Slot and charging port. There is also an extra piece of Anti-explosion film. The phone is pre-applied with a tempered film, too.

This charger is also a 33w Type-C charger. From the charging protocol compatibility, it should be the same charger as the V20. The only difference with the V20 is that there is no USB-C to A Female cable in the box this time.

Doogee S98 Design

The design of the Rugged phone is like a human fingerprint, there are no two rugged phones in the world that are exactly the same, but the S98 is even more special. If you only look at the back, you won’t even think it’s a rugged phone. The back panel is very smooth to the touch and has a stitching design. Although it is still made of rubber, it looks like it is made of leather. It seems like the same phone used by business people.

The most special thing is this camera module. Most other phones have the camera in the middle, but the Doogee S98 is different. It has a huge round screen in the middle of the back panel. Yes, it’s massive, almost as big as my watch. This screen has the same function as the V20, you can check the time, switch songs or answer calls. But also, like the V20 there is no way to use the camera’s preview. The S98 also has NFC and custom buttons, and the SIM Card Tray can be installed with two SIM cards and a Macro SD Card. Anyway, I think the design of the S98 is even more special than the V20, and it is also very functional.

Doogee S98 Display

The S98 uses an FHD+ LCD screen. The quality of this screen is not much better than other rugged phones. Of course, if you compare it with the V20, the gap could be even bigger. The screen is not its strength, but it is enough to ensure normal use. The important thing is that its system is Android 12 by default. The gesture animation is smooth, and the UI looks good. Because the system update frequency of rugged phones is relatively low, so you want a rugged phone with Android 12, and we suggest you to buy the phone whose factory system version is Android 12.

As with other rugged phones, the S98 has Corning Gorilla protective glass plus a tempered film to protect the screen. It is enough to ensure that the screen will not be broken when dropped at a height of 1.5 meters. All ports are waterproof and IP68 and IP69K certified.

Doogee S98 Camera

The camera system of the S98 is the same as the V20, consisting of a 64 MP main camera, an 8 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 20 MP Night vision Camera. The performance of this camera system is almost the same as the V20. Because the main camera doesn’t have the same pixel 4-in-1 in auto mode as other phones, you get a clear, sharp photo most of the time. Even when you zoom in on a photo, you can still see very clear image details.

The S98’s night mode is almost no different from auto mode photos when taken in a well-lighted night scene. Only when the environment is very dark, you can see that the night mode photo will be slightly brighter.

The ultra-wide-angle camera can help you capture a wider picture, but of course, the quality of its photos is not as good as the main camera, especially at night when the light is not good.

Finally, the Night vision camera has added the autofocus function. And while the V20 will remind you that you’re out of focus by flashing the IR fill light, the S98 will simply turn off the IR fill light when it’s out of focus. This directly eliminates the possibility of you taking blurry photos.

Doogee S98 Performance & Benchmarks

DOOGEE V20 is using MediaTek Helio G96 processor. This is the first time we are seeing this processor. According to the results of Benchmark Tests, in Antutu the phone scores 300,000 points. In 3DMark it is close to 1200 points.

It seems that the GPU performance of this processor is similar to that of the Dimensity 700 processor of the V20, but the CPU performance is a bit worse. However, light mainstream games such as PUBG are stable at 40fps, and COD Mobile can even run at 60fps.

Doogee S98 Battery Life

The battery capacity is 6000mAh, which can standby for 432 hours or play games for 10 hours. It also keeps the good tradition of DOOGEE phones with long battery life. 33w charging power is much faster than most rugged phones. And it also supports 15w wireless charging. So its good.

From the V20 to the S98, DOOGEE has always come up with some interesting phones. If the V20 gives rugged phone users the option of an OLED screen, then the S98 is the rugged phone that allows more people to use the business style.

Some exciting details have surfaced about Doogee’s upcoming S98 series that includes one of the first models to premier the MediaTek’s Next-G 6nm chip. Doogee S98 will come with two screens and a night vision camera among several other features and performance metrics. Although when the news broke out about the MediaTek Next-G chip, the specific Doogee model to premier the premium chip was not specified, it has now been revealed that at least one of the models in the Doogee S98 series will indeed be the device to take that honor.

There are scant details about the Doogee S98 at this time but informed sources insist that there are three models in the S98 lineup namely the S98, S98 Pro, and the S98 Ultra with a staggered release plan for the models beginning with the vanilla version set for a possible March 2022 unveiling. The Doogee S98 Pro and S98 Ultra could be released between April and May 2022.

The Doogee S98 Pro or S98 Ultra are the likely candidates for the Next-G chipset while the S98 will be powered by the Helio G96 chipset with 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. The added microSD card slot could scale up the storage capacity of the S98 to 512GB. The S98 will run on Android 12 from the box and Doogee will offer software support and updates for up to three years. The front-facing and rear camera setup of the Doogee S98 include a 16MP selfie camera and a triple rear camera setup signposted by a 64MP primary camera and a 20MP Night Vision camera.

Pricing and global availability details for the Doogee S98 are not available at this time, but we expect these details to become known as we inch closer to the release of the smartphone next month. More details will also become known of the S98 Pro and S98 Ultra apart from the little divulged about the models currently.
