Chinese shopping platform Meituan has made major strides in drone deliveries. The company announced that it has completed more than 100,000 drone deliveries by 2022, an increase of more than 400% year-on-year. The drone delivery service that started in 2017 is officially launched Normal trial operation in early 2021. As of the end of 2022, Meituan drones have landed in Shenzhen and Shanghai, serving nearly 20,000 households, covering 18 communities and office buildings.

Meituan’s drone delivery service is efficient, with an average delivery time of 12 minutes. This is nearly 150% more efficient than traditional delivery methods, saving users nearly 30,000 hours of waiting time. The company’s drones can currently deliver more than 20,000 products FMCG supermarkets including catering, beauty and cosmetics, as well as new products such as Apple iPhone and vivo can also be delivered by drones.

The main users of Meituan’s drone delivery service are white-collar workers aged 20-35, accounting for nearly 80% of the total users. That’s nearly 10 percentage points higher than traditional delivery models. The company also noted that its users prefer drone deliveries when making purchases Every day from 14:00 to 17:00, the afternoon tea order is nearly 16% higher than the traditional mode.

The increasing deployment of drones to solve medical emergencies was brought to the fore again in an incident that happened in Sweden last December. A 71-year old man was resuscitated by a doctor who was supplied a defibrillator by a drone. The unnamed elderly man had a heart attack while shoveling snow, as reported by drone service company Everdrone. The remarkable incident indicates that the Everdrone Emergency Medical Aerial Delivery (EMADE) service was called in and, within minutes, was able to scramble a drone carrying a defibrillator that was then used by the medical doctor to save the life of the man.

The Everdrone’s EMADE service is designed to deliver the medical supply as quickly as possible. It allows emergency dispatchers to send the drone carrying the device to the location to give a headstart to the ambulance team which may take a bit longer to arrive at the location. In this particular case, the drone arrived just three minutes after it was requested. A bystander, who happened to be a doctor on the way to his job, then used the device on the patient after administering CPR.

The medical delivery drone is the outcome of a collaboration between the Swedish Center for Resuscitation Science, SOS Alarm, Region Vastra Gotaland, and Everdrone. The feat adds to Everdrone’s growing repertoire of successes using its cutting-edge drone technology with great emergency credentials and super-fast response times. A four-month pilot study had seen the drones delivering medical equipment faster before the ambulance arrived in most of the cases. The numbers from the pilot study were very impressive both in the response times and the actual delivery of the medical devices. Europe may join parts of Sweden already enjoying the EMADE service this year.

Wing, a subsidiary of Google‘s parent company Alphabet, has recently announced that it will be bringing its drone delivery service to the Texas city of Dallas. This marks the first densely populated market that it is launching its service in.

This means that soon you can expect to see drones flying around in Dallas-Fort Worth with small containers that will be filled with products like Tylenol and Band Aids. In other words, Wing is starting its deliveries for small products that will be available in just one Walgreens to the city of Frisco and town of Little Elm. According to the company, it will be using its new operation model to ship small containers parked next to the store act as tiny hangers out of which Wing’s drones will be deployed.

Notably, the Walgreens employees will be trained in how to attach the packages to the company’s packages rather than Wing’s technicians. For those unaware, major tech giants like Amazon and Uber among other brands have been working on launching their own drone delivery services as well. These drones seeks to revolutionize the process of shipping goods and products. As of right now, the technology has mainly focused on small scale experiments like delivering vaccines and blood to remote regions.

In the US, drone delivery has mostly been limited to the smaller towns that are less crowded and less complex. But now, Alphabet owned Wing has seen minor success with its service, with its operations completing its 100,000th delivery while operating in three nations, including the US, Finland, and Australia.

Swiggy might soon begin delivering food using unmanned drones in India. The food delivery service is set to begin trials for both food and medical packages along with its drone delivery partner ANRA Technologies.

According to a Gadgets360 report, ANRA Technologies has finally got clearances from the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the Directorate General of Aviation (DGCA), and the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA) to commence drone trials for delivering food. The firm has also got clearances for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations. ANRA has launched its first sortie earlier this week. In the next couple of weeks, the ANRA team will also conduct BVLOS food and medical package delivery trials in Etah in Uttar Pradesh and Rupnagar in Punjab.

The principal program manager of Swiggy, Shilpa Gnaneshwar, stated that the new project will enable the company to “put the long range proficiencies of drone technology to best use. To smoothen and fasten the last mile journey, it only becomes natural for us to explore the latest avenues available to maximize the benefit to our consumers.” Furthermore, Amit Ganjoo, the founder and CEO of ANRA stated that “our technology may soon help deliver food and medical packages to underserved populations.”

Similar to Swiggy, the Google backed Indian delivery service, Dunzo, has also announced that it was set to pilot drone delivery of medicines under the ‘Medicine from the Sky’ project launched by the Telangana government. This project also seeks to deliver emergency medical supplies that could even include coronavirus vaccines and other essentials as well.

Zomato, one of the leading food delivery service provider in India, has announced that it has successfully tested its drone delivery technology. The test was conducted using a hybrid drone and was a part of the company’s attempts to reduce the time taken to make a food delivery to its customers.

The development comes months after the company had acquired drone startup TechEagle to reduce food delivery times and solve other issues like pollution and traffic. Zomato has also revealed that it is forming a consortium as per Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) guidelines to carry out experimental Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone operations.

Zomato revealed that drone tests were carried out last week at one of the remote sites approved by the DGCA but the company did not reveal the exact location where the drone-delivered the package.

In a statement, Zomato’s Founder and CEO, Deepinder Goyal said:

“We have been working towards building sustainable and safe delivery technology and with our first successful test, food delivery by drones is no longer just a pipe dream. While regulatory hurdles are not trivial, and the government’s concerns need to be looked at from various (valid) points of view, the tech is ready to fly and I am confident that drone delivery will be commonplace sooner rather than later.”

As for the drone used for this testing, it was a hybrid drone with a fusion of rotary wing and fixed wings, carrying a payload of 5 kilograms. It covered the distance of 5 kilometers in 10 minutes with a peak speed of 80kmph. Fully automated, each drone is currently being tested with (remote) pilot supervision to ensure safety, said the company.

According to the notification issued by Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) last month, interested companies need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the DGCA for conducting experimental Beyond Visual Line of Sight operations (BVLOS) of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS)/Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).
