The Mate 9 will likely be unveiled at an event scheduled for November 3 in Munich, Germany. Despite the launch being so close, rumors and last minute leaks are still coming in.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/huawei-mate-9-render-4/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-102249" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/huawei-mate-9-render.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate 9" width="930" height="509" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/huawei-mate-9-render.jpg 930w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/huawei-mate-9-render-300x164.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/huawei-mate-9-render-768x420.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 930px) 100vw, 930px" /></a></p>
<p>The latest rumor is that Huawei will unveil to different body styles on that day, said to be distinct up to the point that one of the designs would sport a curved display. Both design styles are said to go by the code-names Manhattan and Long Island, coined from two popular New York locations, one a borough and the other a region.</p>
<figure id="attachment_102254" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-102254" style="width: 649px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/huawei-mate-9-longisland/"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-102254 size-full" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/huawei-mate-9-longisland.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate 9" width="649" height="237" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/huawei-mate-9-longisland.jpg 649w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/huawei-mate-9-longisland-300x110.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 649px) 100vw, 649px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-102254" class="wp-caption-text">Mate 9 Code-named Long Island</figcaption></figure>
<p>Of the two, the model code-named Long Island seem to be at the top of the pack as it is said to feature a dual-edge curved display similar to those on Samsung&#8217;s Galaxy Edge series as well as on the Note 7. The model is said to come with QHD reolution in contrast with Manhattan&#8217;s FHD resolution power and would support Android&#8217;s DayDream VR functions. Unfortunately, according to the source the Long Island code-named model would only be sold in China while the Manhattan model would be released globally including the United States.</p>
<figure id="attachment_102255" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-102255" style="width: 549px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/huawei-mate-9-manhattan/"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-102255" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/huawei-mate-9-manhattan.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate 9" width="549" height="227" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/huawei-mate-9-manhattan.jpg 549w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/huawei-mate-9-manhattan-300x124.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-102255" class="wp-caption-text">Mate 9 Code-named Manhattan</figcaption></figure>
<p>Also one of the internal source is said to have hinted that the recent leaked renders of the Mate 9 in several colors, which look similar to Manhattan are not accurate in the sense that they don&#8217;t depict front of the device correctly. The source claims the render pictured below is the right depiction of the Huawei Mate 9 model code-named Manhattan which would see a global roll-out. Another source however revealed that the rumored specs of the device already in circulation are accurate.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/huawei-mate-9-render2/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-102250" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/huawei-mate-9-render2.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate 9" width="505" height="1000" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/huawei-mate-9-render2.jpg 505w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/huawei-mate-9-render2-152x300.jpg 152w" sizes="(max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px" /></a></p>

<p>As a reminder, the Huawei Mate is said to come with a 64-bi HiSilicon Kirin 960 processor, a 5.9-inch display, dual Leica cameras similar to the Huawei P9&#8217;s <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/04/28/huawei-mate-9-rumored-come-20mp-dual-camera-setup/">but with f/2.0 and 20MP sensor</a>, iris recognition, 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM versions as well. The device is also expected in three storage versions of 64GB, 128GB and the top most with 256GB which would only be available on the 6GB RAM version.</p>

Despite having a lot of other products like wearables, air conditioners, water purifiers etc, the core of Xiaomi&#8217;s business has always been its smartphones. And the company releases at least one phone every quarter. This has significantly increased its fan base in the past couple of years, and it is now a well know brand in Asian countries like India and even in other continents.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-88041" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/xiaomi-1.jpg?x10805" alt="Xiaomi wallet" width="1024" height="512" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/xiaomi-1.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/xiaomi-1-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/xiaomi-1-768x384.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Up till now, Xiaomi has been using IPS LCD displays for its flagship smartphones, but that may change in the future. According to Korean media, Xiaomi&#8217;s CEO, Lei Jun is reportedly visiting Seoul, South Korea for the first time, to meet Samsung Electronics executives. Meeting Samsung&#8217;s executives could be a good indicator of Xiaomi&#8217;s plans to partner with the South Korean company for supplying components to its smartphones.</p>
<p>According to the report, Xiaomi will be meeting Jeon Young-hyun, who is the president of Samsung&#8217;s memory chip division (smartphones). Along with Jeon, Lei Jun is also expected to meet other Samsung executives from the company&#8217;s Display department. Considering Samsung enjoys a major share (more than 90%) of the smartphone OLED market, there is a good chance that Lei Jun is visiting to talk about the possibly supply of OLED displays for the company&#8217;s smartphones.</p>
<p>We had seen reports about <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/02/29/smartphones-huawei-xiaomi-vivo-will-flaunting-edge-displays-soon/">Chinese companies like Xiaomi, Huawei, and Vivo </a>planning to release curved edge smartphones. Moreover, lately, we also have been hearing a lot about curved display smartphones from Xiaomi, like the <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/06/22/xiaomi-mi-note-2-details-leaked-three-versions-two-one-curved-screen/">Mi Note Edge</a>. Given that Samsung leads the dual curved edge display market for smartphones, this meeting could be to talk about supplying curved displays for Xiaomi&#8217;s upcoming smartphones.</p>
<p>Lei Jun could even talk about the supply of Samsung&#8217;s Exynos chipsets for Xiaomi flagships. We have seen the Exynos family get better and better in the past couple of years and the Exynos 8990 is presently one of the best chips in the market. I am sure fans won&#8217;t mind seeing an Exynos powered Xiaomi flagship in the market.</p>
<p>We will have to wait and see whether how these two companies can work together to bring the latest technologies to Xiaomi smartphones in the future.</p>

Looks like these two aren&#8217;t the only new Chinese smartphone manufacturers working on such a smartphone as alleged images of a curved display smartphone from Meizu has just surfaced online. Like the Galaxy S7 Edge, these images reveal a new Meizu smartphone featuring dual edged curved display.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-82560" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Meizus-curved-display-smartphone-leak_1.jpg?x10805" alt="Meizus-curved-display-smartphone-leak_1" width="600" height="396" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Meizus-curved-display-smartphone-leak_1.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Meizus-curved-display-smartphone-leak_1-300x198.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Meizus-curved-display-smartphone-leak_1-540x355.jpg 540w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>Although the images aren&#8217;t as clear as we would have liked, it does reveal that the phone will have dual edged screen. The basic design seems to be in line with Meizu&#8217;s flagship philosophy, and it reminds us a little of the <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2015/09/25/meizu-pro-5-unboxing-pictures-released/">Pro 5 flagship announced</a> last year. Another very Meizu like design is the physical home button, located just below the display. Its oval in shape and similar to the ones we have seen on the <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/04/19/meizu-m3-note-unboxing/">company&#8217;s smartphones in the past</a>. Also, a couple of images reveal that the phone is running Meizu&#8217;s own Flyme OS. Unfortunately, apart from this, no other information was revealed about the device.</p>

<p>We are not sure whether the company is planning to release this dual edged screen smartphone as a variant of the existing <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/04/13/meizu-pro-6-official-details-about-specs-features-camera-pricing-inside/">flagship Pro 6</a>. This is a possibility as the company could follow the same strategy as the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. But another possibility is that this could be a new smartphone lineup, like the update of the popular MX series. We haven&#8217;t seen the Meizu MX6 model yet and this could be it or at least one variant in the series.</p>
<p>Meizu has had a good relationship with Samsung in the past, with the company using the South Korean giant&#8217;s Exynos chipsets inside its flagship models. So, it is quite possible that the company extends this relationship for curved edged displays. A recent leak event showed off an Exynos 8890 powered variant of the Meizu Pro 6, you can <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/05/08/meizu-pro-6-exynos-8890-spotted-new-variant/">read all about that from here</a>.</p>
<p>So, what do you think? Is it a good idea for Chinese giants to release dual edge curved display smartphones?</p>
