Sony has announced a new special edition DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5. The Icon Blue Special Edition draws inspiration from the iconic blue lighting associated with the PlayStation brand since the PS4 era. It features layered shades of blue across the grips and lower shell, along with a glossy pattern of the PlayStation symbols on the touchpad.

The controller launches on October 20 in the United States and Canada, followed by a release on October 28 in Mexico and Chile. Sony has set the retail price at $84.99 USD, CA$109.99, MXN $1,899, and CLP $93,490. The Icon Blue model will be available exclusively through Walmart stores and Walmart’s official website in the respective regions.

Sony added Katakana characters on the back of the controller that spell “PlayStation” in Japanese. The company said this detail pays homage to the brand’s roots. According to Leo Cardoso from Sony’s Color, Material and Finish design team, the controller captures the feeling of anticipation and immersion that begins the moment the console powers on and the signature blue light appears.

The Icon Blue edition maintains all the features of the standard DualSense controller. It supports haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, motion controls, a built-in microphone, and a USB-C port. It also includes a 3.5mm headphone jack and works with both the PlayStation 5 and supported PC or mobile platforms.

Sony introduced the new controller as part of its ongoing celebration of PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, which began on September 9. The company has not confirmed if the Icon Blue edition will launch in additional markets beyond North and Latin America.

The new color option adds to the growing lineup of DualSense variants, which includes Galactic Purple, Starlight Blue, Midnight Black, and several game-themed limited editions.

Sony has announced the DualSense Astro Bot limited edition controller for a 79.99 US Dollar price tag.

Pre-orders for the Astro Bot controller will go live on 9th August 2024. For those interested, the special edition DualSense controller is only available in limited quantities in select regions. This includes the US, UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Portugal. The new controller is set to launch alongside the upcoming Astro Bot game on 6th September 2024. For those unaware, the new title is a Sony PS5 exclusive.

As per the official blog post, the controller was built to allow users to feel different textures like water, sand, and grass for a more immersive experience. These are offered by combining the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback in the game. Talking about the game itself, Astro Bot is the direct successor to Astro’s Playroom, which launched back in 2020. The game features 80 levels across six different galaxies with 50 planets.

As of right now, Sony offers DualSense in a base and Edge (basically Pro) variant. But a recent patent filing hints that a next gen DualSense controller could be in the works. Looking at the patent listing, the Japanese tech giant’s new DualSense will feature some major changes. One of the more noticeable changes is to the touchpad, which now functions as a display as well.

This isn’t a simple addition to the existing design but will also feature a robust machine learning and AI based system. The new DualSense will use the screen to help players by displaying button prompts for the most efficient course of action. To complement this, the buttons, namely sticks and triggers, actually light up as well. The system basically ensures that players know what inputs are recommended during difficult sections of the game.

On paper, this could help players defeat challenging bosses or solve hard puzzles. Even tough areas could be navigated via this feature. This feature could help make games more accessible to inexperienced gamers or people with certain kinds of disabilities. However, it needs to be disabled by default since a prompt lighting up every time you’re in-game can be frustrating to some, especially if the AI model isn’t trained properly and suggests incorrect actions.

It appears that Sony is reigniting its efforts towards smartphone gaming. The company patent has revealed that the brand could be working on a PlayStation like controller that connects to your smartphone.

For those unaware, this wouldn’t be the first time the Japanese tech giant attempted at making gaming even more portable. Back in 2011, the company had made Sony Ericsson Xperia Play phone, which was a slider handset that featured a joypad and buttons that were similar to the controller of its popular gaming consoles. While the concept was quite innovative and ahead of its time, the technology at the time was rather limiting. Playing intensive 3D games at the time was impossible with the hardware at hand, although, this issue isn’t as limiting anymore.

Now, gaming smartphones are quite popular in the smartphone market, which offer top notch specs and features that can play intensive multiplayer titles like PUBG, which have a large map size as well. Furthermore, the company recently patented a new PlayStation like controller that is meant exclusively for smartphones. Looking at the images from this patent, we can see the iconic buttons, pads, and triggers that makes it a full fledged controller.

However, we have no way of knowing if it supports DualSense’s vibration motors as well. Just last year we had reported on the company’s unreleased Xperia Play 2 being spotted online. If this product is true, it would likely mean one of two things, either that the company is working on an accessory that fits with any smartphone for added gaming controls, or its an Xperia Play device that would offer game streaming (PS Now) along with smartphone functionality as well.

Caviar has recently unveiled series of new customized products. The company has just released new gold encased PlayStation 5, Apple iPad mini, AirPods Max, and even an iPhone 13 Pro as well.

For those unaware, Caviar is a luxury goods maker who is known for making ultra high end custom versions of popular electronic products and more. Now, the brand has released new products that are encased in gold, which is a known symbol of status. The new collection of custom products are labelled as “Prime,” which are available in either “Gold” or “Gold Plated” versions, with the primary difference between the two bei9ng the amount of gold used and their prices.

The Sony PS5 Gold gaming console is encased in solid 18K yellow old with decorative patterns as well. Furthermore, Caviar even customized the DualSense controller, covering it with genuine lather. Only 5 units of the PS5 Gold have been made and cost a whopping $350,000. Meanwhile, the more affordable gold plated version costs just $12,750. The AirPods Max Gold is also made with 18K yellow gold along with genuine crocodile leather for the ear pads and costs $68,000 (Only 9 units made).

On the other hand, the gold plated version costs just $5,910 (99 units made). Arriving at the iPad mini, the tablet is built with 18K solid yellow gold and also feature four 4mm diamonds. With only 6 units being made, the starting price is $84,920. The gold plated edition costs $6,600 for the 256GB internal storage version but still offers the four diamonds, with 99 units available. Lastly, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max Gold versions start from $42,380 (9 units made). The iPhones do not arrive in gold plated versions, but arrive in a higher end Solid Gold Unique version that sports 55diamonds (1.8 mm each) that are embedded on the back and starts from $45,000.

A few days ago, a custom McDonald’s-themed PlayStation 5 DualSense Controller appeared on the web. It was reported that the Australian branch of the fast-food chain made a limited number of the controller to give away as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

It was later reported that Sony had prevented the controller from being released. McDonald’s Australia also announced that it had postponed its week-long event and revealed new prizes to be won which didn’t include the custom controller.

The latest update on the matter today via IGN is that McDonald’s said the controller was never meant to be released and that it was an internal concept. An official statement from McDonald’s Australia said “the image was provided to media in error and there is no commercial relationship between McDonald’s Australia and Sony PlayStation.”

This might come as a disappointment to fans of PlayStation who have been looking forward to winning the custom DualSense Controller. Sony, unlike its rival, Xbox, has a very limited selection of controller options.

The Xbox Wireless Controller is not only available in several colors and a wide variety of designs but there is also the Xbox Design Lab that allows users to customize their own controllers. The DualSense controller on the other hand can only be picked up in the default white that ships with the controller as well as Midnight Black and Cosmic Red that were announced in May.

The PS5’s DualSense controller is available in three colors – the default white that comes with the console and the new Midnight Black and Cosmic Red color variants that were announced last month. The controller is priced at $69.99 ($74.99 for the red variant). However, if you want a controller that offers more in terms of features, then the Hex Rival from HexGaming might be the controller for you, as long as you are ready to pay four times what you will pay for the DualSense controller.

The Hex Rival looks a lot like the DualSense and that is because the custom controller is built using the DualSense. On the front, the differences are the paint job, the lack of markings on the buttons, and the HexGaming button which replaces the PlayStation button.

On the rear is where the Hex Rival differs as it has mappable buttons on the rear. These buttons are remappable and users can assign up to 15 buttons to the two rear buttons.

The gamepad also features interchangeable thumbsticks, comes with six in total (3 pairs) of different heights, and with 2 different ergonomic thumb grip designs (domed or concave).

The Hex Rival is priced at $289.99 which is more than four times the price of the DualSense. Considering the gamepad is targeted at eSports players, you may not need it to enjoy your PS5 games.

HexGaming is offering the Rival controller in 18 different colors and is already available for purchase on its website.

A new Sony patent has revealed a bizarre technology that the company might be working on. Apparently, the brand might be working on a banana as a possible PlayStation 5 controller.

According to a GamesRadar report, the Japanese tech giant has recently a patent for a new controller device. A patent can carry futuristic or interesting never before seen inventions, but this fruity take on a PS5 controller seems a bit out of place. Looking at the image posters provided by the company, the controller appears to be an actual banana as the firm states that “It would be desirable if a user could use an inexpensive, simple and non-electronic device as a video game peripheral.”

The description of the original patent filing also reads the “The present disclosure seeks to address or at least alleviate some of the above-identified problems.” To tackle this issue, the company is working on a solution that will allow “non luminous passive object being held by a user.” This implies that we might be able to see the application of the controller on other objects as well, like a pen, pencil, orange, or even a banana.

Keep in mind, that the patent from Sony doesn’t offer any details regarding this new technology, only offering loose references to items that can theoretically be used as a simple computer. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like the company is actually working on such a product, but stay tuned for more updates.

The DualSense Controller is what you will find in the box when you purchase a PlayStation 5. The controller has a new design, a handful of new features, and apparently, compatibility with other devices.

Sony has begun sending out PlayStation 5 units to influencers including YouTubers, and one of them has made a video showing the new controller work with Android and Windows.

An unboxing video of the DualSense Controller made by YouTuber, Austin Evans, shows the controller work with the Windows-powered Surface Laptop Go and the Pixel 5 even though the box clearly states that it is only compatible with the PlayStation 5.

Austin plugs it into an Xbox Series X but it doesn’t work however it works mostly well with the Surface Laptop Go. He also connects it to the Pixel 5 via Bluetooth and even uses it to play a game via Xbox Game Streaming. The controller is also connected to a PlayStation 4 successfully but doesn’t work.

It is nice to know that the $70 DualSense Controller works not only with the PlayStation 5. However, its features such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers don’t work with these unofficially supported devices.

There are speculations that the controller may eventually work with the PS4 with a future update but don’t bank on it. The DualShock 4 controller works with the PS5 but only with PS4 games. You will also be able to use license third-party controllers and the DualSense Controler to play PS4 games on the PS5.
