As expected, Xiaomi has today officially launched its latest product in the market — Xiaomi eBook Reader Pro. Now up for pre-order, the device is currently priced at 1,099 yuan, which is about $168 instead of its original price of 1,299 yuan (~$198).

The name clearly indicates that the device is an upgraded variant of the Xiaomi eBook Reader that was launched in November last year. The new model comes with a bigger 7.8-inch e-ink screen, compared to the 6-inch panel on the original model.

It offers 1872 x 1404 pixels screen resolution and 300PPI pixel density. The device offers 24 different levels of screen adjustment — from cool to warm light. Further, there’s support for several library import methods, including Baidu Netdisk, WLAN Transfer, etc.

Under the hood, the Xiaomi eBook Reader Pro is powered by a quad-core high-performance and low-power consumption processor. It has built-in hardware EPDC controller for smoother page turn operation. The company also adds that users can quickly find what they are looking for by typing or through voice commands.

The company says that the size is closer to the A5 paper and the device is portable and lightweight as it measures just 7mm in thickness and weighs 251 grams. Xiaomi says that the device lasts for up to 70 days when it is fully charged.

Last year, Xiaomi announced its very first ebook reader called the MiReader. The product is exclusive to China but it may be getting a global release soon under the name MI Ebook Reader.

The MI Ebook Reader has been spotted on the database of the Bluetooth SIG. The device received its Bluetooth certification on July 23 and the certificate shows it will connect via Bluetooth 5.0.

Lately, Xiaomi has been launching outside China more of its non-smartphone products. Just a few weeks ago, it launched the Mi Portable Electric Air Compressor in India. The portable inflator launched in China more than a year ago before getting a global release. Its Mi Notebook PCs have also made their way out of China. So it is no surprise that it wants to launch its Ebook reader outside China.

The MiReader has a 6-inch e-Ink screen with a PPI of 221. There is also a 24-level adjustable front-lit LED, so owners can read in the dark. It is powered by an Allwinner processor paired with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The e-book reader supports several file formats including epub, PDF, DOC, XLS, TXT, and PDF. Users can also sideload their own content onto the device.

Chinese giant Tencent has today officially launched its second-generation eBook reader in the country, named Tencent Pocket Reader II. The product, priced at 1,099 yuan (approximately $158), comes in multiple color options.

The Tencent Pocket Reader II measures 145 × 75 × 8.5mm and weighs around 130 grams. It comes featuring a 5.2-inch e-ink screen that offers 284 PPI pixel density and has 36 backlit reading lights.

It has the latest Carta 2 ink screen along with 2.5D AG process glass optical technology which the company claim improves the paper effect on the screen. Under the hood, the eBook reader is powered by a quad-core A53 CPU. The device also comes with physical keys that enables users to turn the pages UP or DOWN.

The product also supports 4G mobile card / data card networking, along with support for calling, text messaging and WiFi networking. Users also have an option to switch ON the flight mode with just a single click.

The Tencent Pocket Reader II is directly linked to Tencent Reading Group’s book resource library. Between Pocket Reading and mobile QQ reading app, users can synchronise bookshelves, accounts, and reading progress across platforms.

It also enables users to import local books through Bluetooth or USB, and has also strengthened the support of third-party applications in the application system. It can independently select the refresh mode and supports more reading apps.

The device is powered by a built-in 2,000mAh battery and has a USB Type-C port for charging the product. The Tencent Pocket Reader II comes in Black, Green, and Red color for a price of 1,099 Yuan, which is roughly $158.

Xiaomi, which has expanded its presence far beyond the smartphone category, is now coming up with yet another new category of product — eBook reader. The company has confirmed that it will be launching Xiaomi eBook Reader on 20th November, taking on the popular Amazon Kindle.

The Xiaomi eBook Reader will be up for crowdfunding in the Chinese market from 20th November and can be pre-booked for a price of 579 Yuan, which roughly converts to $83. However, when the device goes on sale, it will be priced at 599 Yuan, roughly $85.

The device comes with an ink-screen which the company claims can offer a pixel density of 212 PPI. Thanks to the display type used in this product, it will offer an anti-glare experience, so you can comfortable read your book even under direct sunlight without facing any issues.

It also has built-in LED reading light which supports 24 stages of dimming, making sure that you have a suitable brightness while reading your books regardless of where you are — indoor or outdoor.

Internally, the Xiaomi eBook Reader comes powered by an Allwinner quad-core processor which is clocked at 1.8GHz, which is coupled with 1GB of RAM and comes with 16GB of internal storage.

The device runs Android 8.1 Oreo operating system and supports variety of content, including books, web-based works, as well as high-quality comics. It also supports txt files, EPUB, and PDF among other file extensions.

Coming to the battery, the eBook reader is powered by an 1,800mAh battery which the company claims can offer standby time of several weeks on a single charge. Xiaomi has included USB Type-C port to make sure that the charging remains easy and convenient. At 178 grams, the device is easy to carry around.

After Amazon refreshed its Kindle Paperwhite lineup in October last year, the e-commerce giant has now launched a new model in its entry-level e-book reader lineup. Amazon has launched an “all-new” Kindle, a tenth-generation model, which comes with a built-in light.

With the addition of a built-in adjustable front light, the new 2019 edition of the Kindle is the cheapest e-book reader in the family to support the night-friendly feature. Compared to the 5 LEDs on the Kindle Paperwhite, this one comes with 4 LEDs.

It comes with a 6-inch touch screen display offering 800 x 600 pixels screen resolution and 167 PPI pixel density. It has 4 GB of internal storage that can hold thousands of books. For connectivity, the device supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n.

In terms of battery life, the new Kindle is claimed to offer around 4 weeks of battery life by the company — same as the entry-level Kindle that was launched in 2016. Further, the company says that the new Kindle has an updated electronic ink technology for better contrast and now uses capacitive touch to prevent accidental swipes.

The device also comes with a refreshed design, measuring 160 x 113 x 8.7 mm. This makes it slightly thinner and compact compared the previous-generation entry-level Kindle. It weighs 174 grams, so it’s easy to hold in one hand even for long reading sessions.

The all-new Amazon Kindle comes in two color options — Black and White. It is priced at $89.99 with “special offers” and $109.99 without special offers in the US. In India, the device is priced at Rs. 7,999 (approximately $117). It is now available for pre-order at Amazon and will start shipping from 10th April.
