Now, the company is gearing up to launch the Huawei Watch 3 Pro with ECG in its home market China. As per the report, the device could be officially announced in the Chinese market on 27th July.

According to an ITHome report, the Chinese tech giant’s technology making it on the list officially signifies the company’s entry into the field of medical equipments. As per the data from the State Food and Drug Administration, the Huawei smartwatch’s ECG sensor belongs in the second category of medical equipment, with its registration certificate number “20202071705.”

Back in May 2021, He Gang, the president of Huawei’s consumer business smartphone product line, stated that the company’s first smartwatch that supports blood pressure tracking has passed medical device registration tests. Furthermore, the company’s new technology will also start registered clinical trials with professional medical institutions within the next six months. According to the Guangdong Food and Drug Administration, the brand has three other medical devices that have entered the priority approval process.

This includes the wrist ECG blood pressure tracker (MLY-B10, MLY-B11), ECG analysis system (ECG-1), and heart rate disturbance analysis system (PPG-1). While the current generation of smart wearables include a number of health monitoring systems, these are not used for medical diagnoses. Additionally, only a few brands have obtained the second class certificate for medical equipments, namely Huawei, Apple, Huami, and Oppo.

The company is reportedly working on new features that would be introduced to consumers in the near future. Some of the features include ECG and blood pressure monitoring, improvements in AI deep learning, and possible Spotify integration.

This was disclosed in an interview by Zepp Health COO Mike Yeung (via). Zepp is a separate brand under Huami just like the Amazfit brand. The COO hint Huami was currently engaging with the US FDA to get its algorithm certified and also working on areas such as ECG and blood pressure monitoring. He also stated that the company was already in partnership with Alivecor in the US.

Alivcor is a renowned EKG sensor manufacturer and is acclaimed as the first company to get an ECG accessory for the Apple Watch approved by the FDA.

“Everybody heard about how Apple Watch got FDA approval, but to be frank, almost 18 months before that, we actually had our Health Band certified as a medical device by the China FDA so it can measure ECG accurately as a medical device,” Yeung added.

Huami isn’t just trying to get onboard the ECG-packing smartwatch train, instead it is working on a new innovation – cuffless blood pressure monitoring and glucose tracking. “Our biggest achievement is firstly our ECG, and secondly, sleep research. We’re going to continue to refine those further, and then the upcoming is in blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring. We are also quite optimistic now, based on current progress, about glucose monitoring. It’s been a difficult nut to crack, but we are now more optimistic than ever that we can do it,” Yeung disclosed.

In order for its product to appeal to a wider audience in the west, the company is partnering with some prominent brands suchas Spotify, according to Mr Yeung. “We’re with ecosystem partners in some instances, such as Spotify. Music playing and payment, for example, are things we are engaging with all the local partners to beef up. Over half of our products are sold overseas, outside of China. But mostly in Europe and Southeast Asia. We do have a very ambitious plan for North America’s expansion. Actually, we planned to expand very aggressively in North America last year, but due to COVID, we suspended that to resume,” he added.

We can’t say if these new features will be on the upcoming products but we won’t wait for too long to find out.

As reported by AppleInsider, Apple has reportedly infringed Alivecor’s following patents. You can take a look at the patent numbers and its designation below:

10,595,731- Methods and systems for arrhythmia tracking and scoring(state of the art diagnosis).

10,638,941- Discordance monitoring(limitations in techniques and equipment).

9,572,499- Methods and systems for arrhythmia tracking and scoring(inventors’ improvement in techniques and equipment).

Alivecor has filed the complaint in a District Court in Western District of Texas, U.S.A. Accordingly, Apple’s ECG feature on Apple Watch 4, (specifically) Apple Watch 5, and above infringes the above patents. It basically deals with how to use wearable sensors to improve cardiac monitoring using specific methods.

What is interesting here is the Alivecor’s claims of Apple being aware of the above infringement. As per the statement, the company says that the Cupertino giant is doing this purposefully. If you recall, Apple introduced the ECG feature with Apple Watch Series 4.

The ECG app uses a heart rate sensor to detect the electrodes built into the Digital Crown and a new electrical heart rate sensor in the back crystal. Thus, it can tell if a heartbeat is normal or is experiencing any Atrial Fibrillation (AFib). The Apple Watch Series 5, had the same feature but with an improved Always-on Display made possible by LTPO technology.

EDITOR’S PICK: Nightware on Apple Watch that offers temporary relief from nightmares gets FDA approval

Lawsuit

Coming back, the lawsuit says that Apple’s watches which detects irregular heartbeat(Cardiac Arrhythmia) is using the data the same way to diagnose the condition. For the unware, Alivecor is a well-known company that sells ECG hardware& software for mobile & wearables. And it is the first to get US FDA approval to be used as a medical-device accessory to Apple Watch.

The company, however, stopped selling the ECG-enabled Kardiaband after Apple introduced the feature for itself on Watch 4. Now, in the lawsuit, it says it needs compensation. Precisely, as per the prayer of the relief section on the lawsuit, it asks for enjoinment(prohibit from infringement).

Additionally, it is also asking for damages, attorney fees, and other equitable reliefs. Let’s wait and see how this pans out in the future.

UP NEXT: Apple could use Samsung’s parts for camera module in iPhone launching in 2022

The product is said to be a smartwatch — Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro with support for ECG.

With the addition of the ECG feature, the device will be an upgrade over the Watch GT 2 Pro which was launched last month in China. It is said that the wearable device could be priced around 2,688 yuan, which is roughly $409.

Huawei has said that the Watch GT 2 Pro ECG is the company’s first wearable device that has obtained the National Medical Products Administration’s Class II medical device registration certificate. Also, users can also get professional ECG interpretation reports from the top three hospitals in the country.

We expect all the other specs and features on the smartwatch to remain the same as the model launched last month. The Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro has a 1.39-inch 454 x 454 AMOLED display that is protected by scratch-resistant Sapphire Glass.

The watch can track more than 100 sport modes including golf, skiing, and snowboarding with detailed info. It also has 4GB of built-in storage. It has a built-in GPS with a route back feature in case the GPS signal is low and you need to return to your starting point.

It also comes with support for sleep tracking, 24-hour heart rate monitoring, as well as stress monitoring. A couple of weeks ago, it received a new update which introduced support for 24×7 blood oxygen monitoring (SpO2).

It has been made official along with the Fitbit Versa 3 — the successor of the Versa 2 launched last year, and the Fitbit Inspire 2.

In terms of design and features, the new Fitbit Sense is very much similar to the Versa lineup of smartwatches from the company. The highlight is that the Sense comes with two new sensors — ECG and EDA.

Thus, the device can take an electrocardiogram that can also detect atrial fibrillation for better health monitoring. However, the feature won’t be available to use right away given that the FDA approval is pending. Another major feature is that the Fitbit Sense can also track stress levels.

Along with the standard health features like 24/7 heart-rate tracking and various exercise tracking modes, there’s also a new skin temperature checking feature.

The Fitbit Sense comes with an edge-to-edge AMOLED display that offers features like always-on display and auto-brightness. The software has been redesigned to offer customizable widgets, redesigned notifications, and more.

However, the Google Assistant voice-command feature will start rolling out to the users in the coming months. As for the battery life, the company is promising over six days of usage on a single charge.

Among its other notable health features, the new Galaxy Watch 3 also supports blood pressure monitoring, something the Apple Watch has yet to offer. Although, it does require one to calibrate it with a blood pressure cuff to get the baseline readings. But after this, it can calculate the systolic and diastolic pressures through the use of algorithms. Keep in mind, it won’t be as accurate as a standard blood pressure monitor.

Editor’s Pick: Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra vs Galaxy S20 Ultra: Specs Comparison

One of the big let downs is that these features are only available in South Korea. Samsung was waiting for FDA approval before bringing blood pressure monitoring and ECG to the US. According to the South Korean tech giant’s recent livestream, approval for both have been received, which means that the update for these features should arrive soon.

Other health related features like the maximum oxygen uptake (VO2 Max) and SpO2 (relative blood oxygen) readings will also be present in the device. But unfortunately, it will not be available from day one of launch. Samsung plans on adding these through future software updates sometime during Q3 2020.

The source has taken down the Weibo post. It could be either because it was false information or someone forced him to delete it. Whatever the case, please take this story with a pinch of salt.

Original article as follows.

It has been reported that OPPO will announce its first smartwatch this year. OPPO itself confirmed that its smartwatch will be announced in the first quarter of 2020, which means we have between now and the end of March for the watch to launch.

We already know the upcoming smartwatch will have a rectangular/square dial just like that of the Xiaomi Mi Watch. Last year, OPPO’s Vice President, Brian Shen, made a post on Weibo around the time the Mi Watch was taking flak for its similarity to the Apple Watch Series 5.

The company executive said a rectangular dial is better than a circular dial as it can display more information than the latter. However, he did add that a circular dial (for a smartwatch) is better in terms of aesthetics since it looks like a traditional watch.

Now, a leak from Digital Chat Stations has revealed that the OPPO smartwatch will be able to measure ECG/EKG. With an ECG, owners will be able to carry out a test to see if their heart has any abnormalities or has an irregular rhythm. This a more advanced feature than just measuring the owner’s heart rate.

There are other smartwatches that have ECG technology built-in. The popular ones are the Apple Watch Series 5, the Samsung Galaxy Active 2, Withings Move ECG, and the Amazfit Verge. So while having ECG is great, the OPPO Smartwatch will have to pack extra features to give it an edge over its competitors.

There is no specific time for the launch but we won’t put it past OPPO to announce it along with the Find X2 flagship which will also be announced this quarter.
